They can't punch an opposition player, they would get a game bans. The Old Firm was legendary; we had players end up in a court of law with criminal charges on both sides.

In a nutshell Celtic are perceived as Irish, Catholic and nationalist and rangers are seen as British, Protestant and unionist. Think of the 2 different communities in northern Ireland each having a football team to represent them and playing in Scotland. That is what the rivalry is based on. In other parts of the world the divisive colours are black and white. In Scotland and northern Ireland the divisive colours are orange and green.

You will note the way the officials react to Rangers players (in blue) with kid gloves yet Celtic players get hammered. Most officials have grown up supporting Rangers and this is reflected in their decision making
