You gave it a good shot and after 25 years it’s probably wanting a good rest now 😀 That sander looks just like mine. Not sure who is good nowadays as mine is just as old as yours. 😀👍
Terry I used that sander continuously at times for hours and it never quit , reminds me of how they can build quality if the people are willing to pay for it. Most I have seen is wing wang recycled plastic crap not worth any money but people just love a deal. LOL
I have a Black&Decker dragster I've had it about 5 years it works very well. The only problem with the wife buying that belt sander is now she always has shit for me to do....lol
I like what Zig said "try a hammer". I don't know of any manufacture that will build a belt sander that will last 25 years these days. I have an old Porter Cable but it's a beast the exhaust blows right in your face. I think that one will last 25 years because I hate using it!
Well I guess it's time to login to Amazon! I have many different ones in the shop, I haven't shopped around to know what is out there for sale right now. Good luck finding your new belt sander.
I have a Craftsman 3X21 that i use the hell out of. I think i bought it in the early to mid 90's. I use it to put a brushed finish on the aluminum bar stock i make all the SkyScraper Guitar tools out of. I think its newer then yours because it has more plastic, but it does the job!
Tom no more Sears up here they went under and all their stores . I liked this one but I really need a longer belt as I do the same with some metal too. Cheers
There's no better belt sander than the Porter Cable 862 4" (852 3"). I have 1000's of hours behind one without a hick-up in a profession wood shop. It's the same model they been making for nearly 30 years.
25 years ago B&D was making some good power tools. I've got a 30+ year old random orbit sander that's still making my hands tingly when I use it. I'm so out of the loop when it comes to what power tool company is good these day... it seems to change yearly, this year it's Milwaukee's turn....
Yes power tools have all been rebranded and bought by investment firms and made all over the world today. I see lots of wing wang sanders out there and i'm not even tempted by the price - been burnt too many times LOL
You might check to see if you can replace the motor if it is still available. We had a craftsman water pump. The plastic cooling fan in the motor broke. they didn't have a replacement without buying the whole motor so i glued it together. It lasted about 1 year. I replaced it with a different brand of pump. I have a black and decker belt sander that I got new in the early 80's. It still works. I don't use it much. it is a 3x24 I believe.
I chucked it in the trash , bearing are not replaceable . All the power tools back then were build good , today there's a lot of plastic throw away stuff on the shelf. June I will have a project I need a belt sander and I will most likely get a good one. Cheers
Hey Steve check out the Makita 3x21 on amazon rated very good . Makita always makes good stuff that lasts, let us know what you end up buying, good luck.
The drive pulley is threaded onto the shaft, using a left-handed thread. Lock up the armature, twist off the drive pulley (clockwise!) and the guts come out. Now, my problem. I have a really old Craftsman belt sander. The drive wheel bearings are worn out, and I just cannot get the wheel off. Suggestions?
Lowes has taken over all of the sears warranties... just bring it there and they should give you a replacement for free if lifetime. If not theres still ebay and amazon.. just go to sears parts direct and find the part number to cross reference and should be able to get any part on the thing for a few bucks ...
Yeah ya got me there Pal. Been busy, so busy that a lot of stuff I didn't even turn the camera on. I do have some stuff but I knead to get a round TUIT.
Yes Annie everything is a throw away today. People don't want to buy quality it's always the lowest price that temps them into buying garbage and now most of what we buy is low quality garbage. Lucky us humans have not changed , i've had my wife for over 40 years and she's still like brand new :)
I'm not an expert on belt sanders lol mine is a Black and Decker and it's about 15 years old now. No idea what model it is? My brother "borrowed" it and I haven't seen it since 😂
Yes about a two beer job :) oh and I have a english beer review coming up (London Pride ) my daughter picked it up when she went to watch Harry get married .
Ask AVE on RUclips ,he is always pulling apart some thing like that, maybe he can help you. It could save you money. It’s already broken, you can’t hurt it. Good luck
Yeah, your on your own, LOL anything you but today will not last 25 years anymore. Even the high end commercial power tools are going down hill. I'll be waiting on your decision. Don't let us down Steve.
I do not know if this was supposed to be Funny. But made me laugh. 25 years is long enough to take a beating from all your Sanding time. Thanks Buddy Have a Good Day ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Ask Google on the Best Belt Sander lol
I'm a maniac when it comes to having my lumber straight and sanded smooth. Google it is and im predicting its all wing wang crap suggested because that seems to be all that's out there. LOL
need to find a old metal one with no grounding, lol. i think you got your use out of it,i wont buy any crapsman stuff these days. makita, dewalt, milwaukee perhaps?
i,m telling you yard sales are the place,i couldve bought a makita miter saw last week for 20 bucks, but i already have 2. i have a old metal craftsman 1/2 inch drill that was usa made back in the day and its better than most crap today
HAHA nope but its not a common thing depending where you live. Their called garage sales up here and it's mostly junk and clothing but in some areas you need a permit . Its small time at best here compared to south of the border where you have good junk. LOL
Tools these days are made to be used, abused and then thrown away I'm afraid. I have a Makita 21 X 3. It works great, BUT, it's also 20 + years old. I would say you can't buy a tool these days that is repairable after some use. I like that you tried though!!!
Yeah Steve you gotta have a BFH in your inventory. If the big fine hammer don't work right away then open the manual and RTFB. Read the fine book it'll tell ya where ta smack it. Works for stuck floats on quadrajet carburetors well just don't smack it too hard.
Hi Edwin No Craftsman anymore , they went bankrupt years ago in Canada . Lowes up here is almost finished too now as they have been sold and closing many stores in 2023.
Hey Steve.... well you can't gripe about using a tool for 25 treats that's for sure! I would say go out and by a BUY new one. Black and Decker used to make great tools but they have gotten flimsy in past few year's. I have a blower and it's about as useless as tits on a boar hog!!! God luck in your search Steve. I only have a Harbor Freight one BUT I've put it thru hell and back and it keeps on ticking!!!
Black and Decker is total wing wang crap as far as anything I have seen out there. I am tempted to save some money and go wing wang but I know it will bite be in the ass if I do so I will buy a proper sander. Stay tuned buddy in June I will need to use a belt sander and I will have it . Cheers
Mine is a (carbon brush) 1HP Sears 3" Craftsman Model 315.22420. My Dad bought it new back in the 1950s. Solid metal and not aluminum either. Besides being made in the USA and not having any plastic parts the major difference between it and today's newer (flimsier) units is the total lack of a tension lever. The front belt roller is compressed by placing it against something hard, then using your body weight until it clicks back and the tension is released. Here is how the Sears Craftsman manual says to re-tension the belt. "Step 3---To put tension on the belt, strike the front pulley on the edge of the workbench or table as illustrated or place a piece of wood over pulley support and strike with (a) mallet or press downward with palm of hand. Adjust the belt for correct running before proceeding to sand." In short, to re-tension, hit it with a hammer. LoL, how old school is that? I wish more tools today were built that rugged. It still runs perfectly and I just used it again yesterday.
SOOOOO? ANY UPDATE? Did you ever find a GOOD/GREAT BELT SANDER BRAND? WE ALL WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. Mine just can't seem to GO Anymore. Tired to tear it down, I got stuck, Now LQQKING FOR a NEW ONE.
This is my new belt sander and its awesome - ruclips.net/video/3hNIz0h2Utw/видео.html
You gave it a good shot and after 25 years it’s probably wanting a good rest now 😀 That sander looks just like mine. Not sure who is good nowadays as mine is just as old as yours. 😀👍

I seen that one it looks like a dragster . Ok im buying the belt sander then , I have enough jobs to do on my own :)
I'm impressed with how long it lasted! Good luck on your search. I'm not really familiar with Sanders...
Well it lasted longer than Sear did , all gone up here in january.
I like what Zig said "try a hammer". I don't know of any manufacture that will build a belt sander that will last 25 years these days. I have an old Porter Cable but it's a beast the exhaust blows right in your face. I think that one will last 25 years because I hate using it!
HAHA I can see a vid on you modifying the air better so you can use it . Us youtubers are always thinking outside the box eh.
Well I guess it's time to login to Amazon! I have many different ones in the shop, I haven't shopped around to know what is out there for sale right now. Good luck finding your new belt sander.
Thanks and I will do my homework. Cheers

I have a PC biscuit joiner and its built like a tank. Thanks I'll take a look at it .
25 years ago B&D was making some good power tools. I've got a 30+ year old random orbit sander that's still making my hands tingly when I use it.

25 years that's not to bad, good luck with the new one
I'm hoping to burn thru at least 2 more sander then. HAHA
You might check to see if you can replace the motor if it is still available. We had a craftsman water pump. There probably is a way to do it. Easiest way is to fix it is go buy a new one, and in 25 years go get another one. Thank you for the video, Steve.
Yes sir - too bad sears is gone it was a great sander.
I have a porter cable, I really like it. It's about 20 years old. works great still.
Seems PC is highly recommended. Thanks.
I've got a Makita that my wife took for a ride on the picknic table a couple weeks ago. Its strong as a bull.
HAHA thats some testimony on Makita - ok its a makita , just because of your wife .
Hey Steve check out the Makita 3x21 on amazon rated very good . Makita always makes good stuff that lasts, let us know what you end up buying, good luck.
Thanks Gary will do .
Mike there is no more Sears up here or craftsman parts so I'm thinking a new belt sander may turn out to be the best resolve . Cheers
STEVE ROB REVIEWS Pretty much my conclusion. The sad part is that my Dad gave it to my son, and I really wanted to get the thing going again.
Lowes has taken over all of the sears warranties... just bring it there and they should give you a replacement for free if lifetime. If not theres still ebay and amazon.. just go to sears parts direct and find the part number to cross reference and should be able to get any part on the thing for a few bucks ...
I think mine's a Sears too. I don't use it much so I gotta find it. It's down in the cellar.
Show and tell marty - I paid almost $200 for that belt sander 25 years ago I believe and on sale too.
Yeah ya got me there Pal. Been busy, so busy that a lot of stuff I didn't even turn the camera on. I do have some stuff but I knead to get a round TUIT.
thumbs up and shared lol worn out and bushes must be toasted as well DeWalt or Milwaukee are both good belt sanders
I'll check out all the big brands - no wing wang for me anymore :)
Why so they make things to break! My granpa used tools for his whole life now one good year and its over ! You did get good time with the sander!
My brother "borrowed" it and I haven't seen it since 😂
Ok so you don't have a belt sander eh :)
I guess not anymore 😂
Well you got a long time off it , best wishes always
Yes I did. Cheers
Worth a try anyways :) I'd go with DeWalt
Jay most of the premium brands have good stuff , June I will get one . Cheers bud and make hay while the Sunsashinein.
Haha, mostly rain here for past 2 weeks
That looks like a 2 beer teardown 😂 Off to Amazon for a new and improved one
Yes about a two beer job :) oh and I have a english beer review coming up (London Pride ) my daughter picked it up when she went to watch Harry get married .
Good luck selecting a new belt sander .
Thanks Lloyd .
Ask AVE on RUclips ,he is always pulling apart some thing like that, maybe he can help you. It could save you money. It’s already broken, you can’t hurt it. Good luck
Joe I threw it in the scrap pile and now I'm shopping for a new one. Cheers
Looks like I have the same one Steve ...!!!!!
Jack i've used mine for steel and wood and your most likely not advised to use it for polishing steel and aluminum so i've got my money's worth eh :)
I liked the band Motörhead 😂
HAHA and their not wing wang either.
Yeah, your on your own, LOL anything you but today will not last 25 years anymore. Even the high end commercial power tools are going down hill. I'll be waiting on your decision. Don't let us down Steve.
My wife says piss off and buy your own sander :)
I have had good luck with makita if the price is right. There is so many new brands out there and most look too wing wang for me :)
i,m telling you yard sales are the place,i couldve bought a makita miter saw last week for 20 bucks, but i already have 2. i have a old metal craftsman 1/2 inch drill that was usa made back in the day and its better than most crap today
Yard sales , haha nope none around me . Alabama maybe but not so much up here . LOL
what the heck, does your king forbid them?????
HAHA nope but its not a common thing depending where you live. Their called garage sales up here and it's mostly junk and clothing but in some areas you need a permit . Its small time at best here compared to south of the border where you have good junk. LOL

I do like Makita stuff , porter cable is right up there too. All not wing wang and all not wing wang prices either :)
Divide the cost of it by 25 years , I think it served you good.
Yes Roger good point about $5 a year .
I have a Ridgid but would never buy another, nor their battery drill/drivers. I've had no luck with them and their support. Could be just me. :)
I seen it at the depot - lifetime warranty :) I will take your advice , thanks buzz
I do not sand my belts , or even wear a belt , so i do not know
Terry not everyone is in as good of shape as you are , I wish I was as buffed as you are and didn't need a belt :)
You gave up too early Steve...Why didn't you smack it about with a hammer.?..That works with my grinder...lol
Yeah Steve you gotta have a BFH in your inventory.
If the big fine hammer don't work right away then open the manual and RTFB.
Read the fine book it'll tell ya where ta smack it.
Works for stuck floats on quadrajet carburetors well just don't smack it too hard.
I always forget the hammer trick , dang :)
How about send it off to AvE for a full post mortem?
HAHA not worth the shipping - good idea though.
Bearings are only a few bucks and most bearings are press in.. otherwise usually their bronze bushings
"It is a craftsman" it should have lifetime warranty...with or without receipt they will replace with same model free of charge.
Hi Edwin
No Craftsman anymore , they went bankrupt years ago in Canada . Lowes up here is almost finished too now as they have been sold and closing many stores in 2023.

STEVE ROB REVIEWS Looking forward to seeing what you are hoping to get into now. LOL
Amazon time 😁
HAHA you betcha .
LoL my own Craftsman sander is much older than that one.
Adjust the belt for correct running before proceeding to sand."
In short, to re-tension, hit it with a hammer. LoL, how old school is that? I wish more tools today were built that rugged. It still runs perfectly and I just used it again yesterday.
The exaxt thing happened to my 3" x 18" ryobi belt sander. Can't be fixed.
Seems their sealed from the factory to be disposable. Cheers Jermain
I can't help you out, I don't know :(
That make two of us HAHA
Get a porter cable
I have a porter cable biscuit joiner and its built well, yes I will take a look. Thanks Richard
SOOOOO? ANY UPDATE? Did you ever find a GOOD/GREAT BELT SANDER BRAND? WE ALL WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. Mine just can't seem to GO Anymore. Tired to tear it down, I got stuck, Now LQQKING FOR a NEW ONE.
