  • A digital version of Tintin in the Congo is released for the legendary journalists 90th birthday. But is it sensible to re-release a comic that was super racist and has been controversial for decades?

If Tintin is racist against black people then you can argue it's racist against ginger haired people too. Look at Tintin himself!

I'm Nigerian and I think it's a great book. The world isn't the same way it was back then, let's not change someone's work just because times have changed.

History is an important context in the evaluation of this book. This was how Africa was perceived in the minds of people at the time. It was written for entertainment, not controversy. I would regard it as a racist book if it was written today. But given the context of the time in which it was written, one could forgive such ignorance. I have this book, and I can say Herge was still a young artist who was influenced by the world around him at the time. His later writings were less political and racist, as he moved away from such things. Tintin is a much beloved character.

What do you know about the Kurds? Have you ever meet a kurd in your entire life? Or are you just using anti-Turk &pro pkk narrative to express your hatred towards a certain part of the world! I view the book as a product of it's time. Tintin readers are intellectually curious rather like the character himself. Reading this led me to other sources about the Congo, the scramble for Africa and the atrocities committed by the colonial Belgians in the name of Leopold II. I learned a great deal. The book is actually popular in DRC as it's seen as somewhat of putting the country on the map.
Anyway, Tintin fans are happy that the 'racist' content gets all the media attention... It detracts away from Tintin's treatment of wildlife in the book which is despicable but barely ever gets a mention.

It made me feel really sick I could tell already that It was racist just by looking at how it was drawn, and my grandparents didn't even notice it.
