- Incredibly, I have brutally cut my expense left and right. I look at my expenses all the time and try to figure out ways to minimize them while still obtaining similar levels of product or service. Let me make yet another quick run down of all the areas where I am still required to pay money and many areas where I may have cut it to zero.

This is great...we have cut back so much on our expenses we can spend on the stuff we really like...we paid off 60000 of debt and 33000 on our mortgage...it feels great to save so much and know we can have a great life living way below our means😁

Ive had a budget for a long time and have a monthly spending of $3500... difference being that im still paying $700 a month on my mortgage AND I am married and have a 2 year old. We dont really skimp on quality of life either, sure we plan things out but sometimes we just spontaneously do/buy something and we just plan the rest of the month accordingly!
Everybody had their requirements of what services they have have. I suppose that is a good amount for family of three.

I can really relate to your budget. As a senior, I have tried to cut my spending in all areas, and have broken it down by categories, as you have. I ask myself do I really need that, and take the item out if possible. Clothing is still a downfall, but you're right, if you have a few shirts and pants, you can only wear one outfit at a time. Good tips from you!😁
Can't beat having the mortgage paid off for saving money! Once you're at that point, monthly expenses drop like a stone. I can't wait til I get there.
Depends, If I were buying a home today I would only take out a mortgage. Interest rates are still at or near historic lows and tax deductible, you can then also deduct your property tax and for a single person it will probably work out better than a paid house or condo. Just make sure you keep enough other liquid assets so can pay the mortgage off whenever you want.
The mortgage tax deduction is one of the big reasons we have an affordable housing crisis. The deduction is actually reflected in higher housing prices.
@@stuarthirsch the mortgage tax deduction is a US thing. Where I live (Canada), you don't get anything like that. Closest you'll get is if you use part of your house for a business, then you can deduct those portion of your expenses from your income.
@@silviag3798 Its a deduction, a long with the ability of deducting state and local property and real estate taxes that should never have been adopted, long since eliminated, but never will be. At least in the US. The only exceptions being if the house is a rental or business property.

@@kimjong-un5562 Thought I explained why I would want a house payment, provided the loan works in your favor, not against you. Because interest rates are near historic lows use other peoples money and get a tax deduction. A mortgage interest rate of 3% after the deduction can translate into an effective mortgage rate of 2% or less depending on the state you live in. This leverages your upside on the house if you sell or flip the house and also protects your downside risk. If there is another real estate collapse just let the mortgage company foreclose or do a short sale.

@@redloopy Individually it's not that much, but if you save $20 here, 20 there, it adds up. Some people can go through and chop out sometimes thousands from their monthly budget that they don't truly need. Investing that money instead of spending it, is how you become wealthy and comfortable. Say you need 20,000 to start a business, if you don't manage your money, you will probably never have the 20k. If you put $1000 into your business starting fund every month, you'll be ready to start your business in a little over a year and a half. There are lots of broke people who wipe their ass with $240, and that is why they are broke.

Great Video! I've always been a big believer in focusing on the big three when it comes to reducing expenses: home, transportation, and food, but this video really showed me the power of how trying to minimize spending in all categories can add up. I also like how you factor in a return on investment viewpoint when it comes to maintaining your quality of life. Why pay $50 for a service, when $20 will give me 90% of the value of the service? That last 10% is not worth it most of the time.

Super interesting. I think it’s interesting to mentioned being local (groceries) means less waste & less resource waste for gas. Have you thought about composting & seeing how little you can get your waste disposal? You might be able to compost in the backyard & just have recycling!

For emergencies when cell phones don't work, get an emergency 2 way radio and learn how to use it. You do not need a license to use a radio for emergency purposes. Not a perfect solution but could still be a good life line. We use ours as a weather radio in the event of bad weather.

Once you use up all that soap get a bottle of Trader Joes All for One; soap, shampoo, and conditioner all in one, one small squirt packs a ton of cleaning power. Bar cloths are great instead of paper towels, cloth napkins are super cheap at Goodwill of any resale shop. The bar cloths and cloth napkins don't really add to the amount of laundry you do because they don't take up any room in the washer.
Huge lesson in this video which is ASK FOR A DISCOUNT. Banks, credit card fees, insurance, utilities etc. can all be negotiable.

Health insurance is my biggest fear in terms of retiring early. I feel like I can’t save enough money because it’s seems like a black box where you have no idea what to expect.
At 58, a catastrophic policy - emergencies only, no routine care, no Rx coverage, $10,000 deductible - $600 a month. Absolutely ridiculous and unrealistic for the average wage earner.

When I had a landline, the costs kept climbing. It was getting to about $40/month and did not even include long-distance. Now, I have just a Tracfone cell and pay about $10/month.
I have the argument going with my (not $0) girlfriend about a landline in case of emergency. Our landline is actually VOIP which goes down when there is a power failure. There is no added emergency benefit. Just an expensive charge when we could just as well get magic jack or something.
Girlfriends are really expensive, that's why I have a boyfriend now.

I was cutting my own hair even before the pandemic. Watching youtube videos and buying the best barbering scissors you can afford. Also I buy a lot of my clothes in thrift stores. I like to buy men's sweaters because they ate much better quality than the women's clothes, and last so much longer. Plus you can get simpler styles in the men's section that don't really go out of fashion so they don't have to be replaced every season
I don't think land line will work in my state during a power outage. All the carriers switched to running home phone through the cable modem. But with most providers it is bundled free with internet and cable
I’m a reseller from home so I plan my trips to post offices right next to grocery stores, while driving I record a video in my car using my phone, then write the trip off with a mileage app. If I record 2 videos per trip then my groceries are basically paid for with ad revenue

I just found your channel and really like it. I have looked at this in much the same way since I was in my teens and now as I'm in my 60's. Do I need it, what's the cheapest way to get it and foremost is it really worth it.
I do business from home so internet is a must but everything u mentioned I totally agree - we really don’t need most of it- we also have a bidet for the past 7 years and limit the use tp and trips to the store which also cost money’s down ur right I only wash ur hair once a week it’s healthier for folicals
All about limited your expenses and still get a reasonable good quality of life. Bidet is cheaper in the long run AND it improves QOL.

Health insurance has really gotten out of control. Having said that, please be careful switching to a less expensive, less comprehensive plan. Even relatively medical minor issues can really wipe a person out financially. I have good insurance now (I am a registered nurse and hospitals usually have good plans). If I were to leave and COBRA my insurance, the payments would be $900 + per month (insane). Having said that, I would maintain the insurance. I’ve had occasion to use my health insurance a lot this year (for minor things). And I literally would have had to spend tens of thousands of dollars with no insurance (or crappy insurance).
Millions of Americans are in what we call job lock because of things like insurance. They can’t leave their jobs to pursue others things they might want to do because insurance is crazy expensive. Insurance companies really screwed us over.

Hi Francis, You forgot the biggest cost item: i.e tax on return on assets (like stocks, savings, etc). I know you are going to say this varies person to person, but that is valid for all the cost items.

You don't pay the tax until you sell the stock. Warren Buffett rarely sells, therefore he pays less taxes. That is where his "I pay less taxes than my secretary" line comes from
I finally get to show something i save on out of necessity. I use a (Good and pricy) electric razer to shave and I have A-LOT of facial hair. The reason i do this, Is not to save, but because my cheeks badly break out with acne even after using aftershave whenever i use razors so I stopped and fixed my problem.

WhenItsHalfPastFive ....We as a society have been propagandized to believe we HAVE to buy commercial toothpaste-filled with preservatives, random fillers and a warning that states "Do not swallow" ..My Gma taught me how to sew, cook and make my own toothpaste, I couldn't imagine buying commercial toothpaste..to each their own...
making soap is very easy. Toothpaste even easier--2 tbs baking soda, 2 tsp cinnamon, 2tsp ground sage, shake it up. Works great! Laundry soap easy too.
Just get lye from drain cleaners. Some drain cleaners are literally just lye.
...and then The Bush plugs the scooter into the library's outlet for the trip home. Every penny counts!
Don't get married whatever you do! Get an electric shaver and use cornstarch as shaving powder. A good electric shaver will last for years. I use the library online. I get my magazines online and even download articles in pdf format from my county library, I can also get books and some movies anywhere, anytime, on my computers or home wifi or public wifi from the county library. I don't look at it as free but, l paid for with my taxes which I have to pay whether I use the government services or not. Use as many government services and benefits as you can of course following the law and regulations. After all you paid and are paying for them.

Yeah... it took me years to get it this low. One type of spending may take me a month or so to slowly work on the logistics, call them, etc.

We keep a sinking fund for clothing, but we are a family of 4 with two growing kids. We are still well below what most people spend on one person.

I would say health is necessary, yes. However, insurance is not necessary for most people. Insurance does not ensure health. It does zilch to give you health. I have found it has opposite effect overall. Health is an inside job, not a toxic pill. Learn to give yourself health in real ways. Eat quality foods, avoid all toxins like plague (learn what they are, where lurking), exercise and care for body properly and avoid high-risk activities. Herbs and diet, lifestyle changes, mindset are more effective 99% of time than the medical route.

I lost myself watching this video realizing how much I spend on shit that I don't need. But one argument which I always have with my little brother who has a budget similar to yours is I am not going to take my money to the grave. We need to budget expenses and live within our means but that doesn't mean we need to stop living. We have one life and especially covid 19 area economics has taught me no days are promised. I see so many young people go it makes me realize lets not plan so far in the future we stop living today. Thank you for your knowledge however. 👍🏼
You forgot to include homeowners insurance vs renter's insurance, car property tax, registration fees, etc. Also, you can get toiletries and household items for very low cost or even free by couponing so you really don't need to sacrifice for those items. You can get coupons from Sunday newspaper inserts, printable coupons from various websites, or coupon resellers from the internet or ebay.
Those are added already part of housing.

My electric bill was $300 this month. In Oklahoma and had to run the AC 24/7. It's usually closer to right under $200. Water/trash $89. Groceries $500. Internet $67. Phone (2 phones) $178. Eating out averages about $100/month for the husband and I together. Gas for the car $350 (husband drives an hour and 20 minutes one way to work). Car insurance (3 cars) $165. House insurance $110. Lots of doctor bills since we're over 55 about $200/mo. No mortgage :)
I feel your self-employed health insurance pain. I'm guessing you're like me and hardly ever use it.
We have some of the same habits- fractioning paper towels, produce bags as garbage bags, self-hair cuts...

You can stop your dollar shave club membership for awhile until you use up your available ones then restart it again. I've used this canceling method a lot for other memberships I have like audible, my various subscription-based streaming services like disney+ and CBS when I've noticed that I haven't used it for awhile. I only have 1 subscription available now.
This guy getting by on $6/day on food, and here I am, eating 4 meals all over $5 per day. Plus at least $5/day in snacks/drinks. A single chicken breast here in Canada is $5-10 haha.
I don't have an electric scooter, but when I was 16, 17, 18, 19, I used to skateboard everywhere and honestly, I used to make pretty good time too! I'm 23 now and I picked up a longboard and honestly if it's within 5 miles and I don't have to carry a bunch of stuff back, it's really nice.
Especially helpful because my car is really bad on gas and takes 93 gas. It adds up really quickly, especially right now.
i make my own soap because i don't like the harsh chemicals of commercial soap, i use 4 items that could be found in my kitchen, olive oil, coconut oil. distilled water and lye it needs 6 weeks to cure but it's worth the wait. I use 1:1:1 ratio of liquid sop, vinegar and water put it on sprayer bottles and that is what i use for cleaning everything, i have one in the toilet, one in the kitchen and 1 in my cleaning caddy.

Family of four? I would go into details of how but I have no experience with kids.
Ooooof, I wish my electric/gas bills were that low, tend to be near 250/mo for electric in summer and 150/mo gas in winter. Presumably majority of cost there is AC/furnace. Still trying to find ways to reduce that, it's hard though cause the house is poorly insulated and leaks a lot of air so short of turning AC/heater off they tend to run a lot (I also have renters so whilst I could myself wear socks/jacket, I want to keep house at a decent temp for renters). I suppose I could buy new AC/furnace units but it wouldn't fix poor insulation and I'd have to figure out how long pay off period would be and how long I intend to stay in this house (probably not forever).
Borrow an infrared video monitor to see what is leaking the most and add augmented insulation like layers on a window you stick on or plug up leaking air.
I'm similar my house was built in '46. Attic insulation is rat torn up and i once accidentally put a hole in the drywall to find no insulation at all in there. However using a full house fan when the weather is nice and setting my ac high when I'm not home helps a ton. No roommates let me do that though

You seem really smart - I feel like instead of trying to cut down on low expenses like soap, you have the ability to make a lot more money
13:54 Netflix you listed $12.99. I get their lowest tier, which after tax costs $9.64/mo. Use your 3% cashback rewards card and that's $9.35/mo. Well worth it if you watch at least half a dozen hours worth per month or more. Are you valuing your time at least at a minimum wage amount? Running off to the library may seem cheap, unless you're accounting for your hours. Same goes for making your own toothpaste.

Jee Vang toothpaste are not material, even cumulatively speaking. I like to focus on the larger pieces of the pie.
I think the cheapest way to live is in a van and buy a cheap gym membership to shower in... I was thinking about this... I would only wanna do it for a couple years though... sit in my van day trading for a year or 2 and then “retire.” A van with internet, computer, tv, bed, gas stove, sink and bed... I like the minimalist lifestyle for the time in your life that you are trying to get stuff done and build wealth, then I will buy whatever I want. It’s kinda like a “one thing at a time mentality.” I like to eat all the vegetables first and then switch to the good part, the meat. I don’t like to balance work and play that much.
Tipis and yurts are surprisingly comfy if van isnt an option...and more spacious. I lived in such for years.
For a super-cheap portable house, cheaper and easier than even tipis or yurts, buy a starplate dome connector set ($110) and 25 2×4s. Drill holes in ends...bolt together into icosahedral frame (about 2 hours)...wrap in canvas or tarps, et voila! Insulate as needed with rolls of reflectix or prodex. Can make it permanent in a few more hours by discovering the miracle of latex-concrete. Latexcrete will turn old sheets into a rock-solid wall or roof. I reroofed my garage with old sheets and latexcrete...works amazingly well!
