When I created my budget, it was after I had been earning a regular income for about 3 months and knew how much I realistically spent especially in critical stuff. Then I set up a budget keeping the critical stuff like rent, food and transport to what I observed, but then tried to curb the clothes, eating out stuff. You can fix your budget for next time by looking at your previous budgets, is the stuff that keeps getting out of budget a need or just wants? If they're needs, your budget needs to be realistic. If they're wants you either need to understand how to control yourself or start budget shifting, which is where you've overspent on one category of wants, another category will have its budget reduced. I also use a mobile app for mine instead of paper, I have to manually enter what I spent, but it sets the date and everything and shows me colour coded progress of how much in spending withing a category. I then adjust the budget for wants if I overspend.
