Paul, I appreciate you for putting this film (and all of your films) together and publishing it. I purchased 10 rolls of Ektachrome. The first two rolls were shot on a cool, overcast day with a light meter as chrome film needs to be exposed to the "t." Developed by a professional lab and scanned at medium res on a Noritsu. I wasn't pleased w my results: Every image had a slight green cast and reds and yellows lacked vibrancy - reds were desaturated to the point of looking brownish (similar to your tomato can image). I then shot on a clear, warm day. Very different results. The colors were gorgeous; reds looked like red; yellows like yellow. Shadow detail was particularly clean and sharp (not so much on the overcast day). Verdict is still out for me on this film. At this point I'm not using it on clients until I experiment with it more. By the way, nice thinking comparing film images to the M8 images since the M8 renders as close to film due to its older technology (and you mentioned this).

In my mind, the strength of Ektachrome is its incredible accuracy of color representation, as can clearly be seen by these photo comparisons. The Ektachrome colors were so close to the digital images -- it show how well balanced the film is. With accurate color, you can always increase or decrease saturation, color balance, etc., in Photoshop, i.e. you have good material to work with in post. It's great that Kodak has brought back this film, and I can't wait for the release of 120 and sheet film formats. Long live film!

Best Leica (camera + lens) w/film image vs Leica digital image comparison on RUclips. Thank you for this. The M6 images were composed better and a smidge more depth of field...but both look like they could have come out of the same camera. The M8 holds up great. Ektachrome colors off the M8! Excellent. Glad I have an M8 and an M4 in my kit!

Good comparison, i was looking forward to this. Its difficult evaluating things on youtube but one thing which stood out was the green cast of Ektachrome, its not something i particularly like. I think the film's red tones were really nice but that M8 was producing superb, rich colours too. For me it would be hard to justify shooting Ektachrome over digital. I think you were spot on with having to be very focused and experienced with Ektachrome to get the best out it, its definately not an everyday film.

Thanks for the comparison! Like most, I think the Ektachrome pictures have a much more pleasant rendering than the straight digital photos. Although, I am sure with a bit of tweak the digital files could look fairly similar (more contrast and a bit of saturation mainly?). Also, Ektachrome pretty much made the National Geographic aesthetics in terms of imagery. I love picking an old NG magazine and check the photos for this reason, for the pleasure of a slide film image. To make them shine, I think the general rule of thumb is to shoot slides on sunny days.

The conditions were definitely more favorable for slide film than the last video. The ektachrome shots were very nice, digital is just missing something for me I dunno. Slide isn't as versatile as negative film, I just got a FM2 to use specifically with slide film when the light is right, my M2 will have color neg or b&w for the rest of the time.

Agreed with that coffee shot as a good example of film over digital. I also like the example of the Dental sign at 5:01, albeit the exposure is slightly different, but the way that those colors go together is much more pleasing to me.

To my opinion judging images on video between the M6 and M8 is impossible. That can only be done in the flesh. Today digital images are extremely high in quality on all fronts, color, brilliancy and sharpness is now cutting edge.
Analog images can also be exellent. Most of my life I worked with analog gear. I made thousands of good quality plc's in big formats.
Since about the year 2000 I started with digital gear and I was even then surprised by the overall quality of it.
The progress in quality of digital camera's was immens over the years! To me digital pic's nowadays are better than analog pic'but I'm not against analog results. They have their own beauty. Specially the older era's of analog photography like the 20ties till the 60ties provided lots of iconic work for sure. Hand made analog so-called fine art prints on high quality printing papers are a class of it's own! But the high quality digital papers are now also VERY GOOD and can match the fine art analog prints.
Do what your hart tells you and it shall give you what you want. Good luck!

Even later to a party that ended rather too long ago, but an ‘add’ to the comment I left a year ago. The reason being that, after much dithering and your M8 print video I have finally, finally decided to leave film, have sold everything and bought an M8. And after all the way too many cameras I have had (Rollei, Canon, Fuji, Olympus, Linhof, Pentax, Sony - film and digital from several) the M8 is my most loved camera ever!
I have gone from 51 mpx weather sealed full professional Canon 5DSr to an ancient, slow 10mpx and… it’s fantastic. Per pixel it looks sharper than the Canon or Sony A7R3 I had and the colours! It’s true that people say the sensor is film like. The warmth seen in your shots (less green tinged than the film scans, though not so warm that the white dog or wooden floor looked off, unlike the scans) is so like images from my favourite photographers, Saul Leiter, Ernst Haas, WA Allard et al. And reminds me hugely of the Kodachrome I used for so long and miss terribly.
So, Paul, basically, thank you. For helping me finally settle on a camera and medium that makes me happy!

Nice video comparison Paul. I too was looking forward to this video after watching the previous. I definitely preferred the look of the Ektachrome over the M8, especially shadows details. That said it wasn’t leaps and bounds over the M8 so I can see why one would lean towards digital, especially when it comes to cost of film and development. Alternatively, like you said, you could use the film for specialty purposes. Thank you for sharing, keep up the great content.

    Hi Paul,
Well I think the M8 comes out on top and has a lot more depth to it compering to the colour film.
I think the Ektachrome will/might work well in the Nevada desert or a rode trip through America.
I still have to try it, In the pass I have used Ektar 100 and it has a lot more depth to it.
Thanks for all your great work and review and thank you for liking my book A year with the Leica M 3.

Interesting! The out of focus parts of these photos look more pleasing on film to my eyes, but they are very similar. I think I would still prefer the Fuji Provia, though. But I will definitely try cross processing the Ektachrome to see if I can get some funky, unpredictable colours from it.

Thank you for this comparison Paul. Very interesting results. However, I wonder to what extent the glass you used has influenced the results. On the M8 you used Zeiss glass and on the M6 Leica. My experience is that the contrast and saturation of the Zeiss class is higher, and that especially the greens are different as well. Overall I like your results on the M6 with ektachrome better, the images seem to be less “restless”. Time to buy some ektachrome myself now. And yes, great video again. Keep up the good works!

I prefer the film pictures almost every time, but I feel like it's more often about minor compositional issues. A few times I am reminded about why I prefer the smoother transition between colors in film, but overall (as usual) I think it falls with the preferences of the photographer. Good photos are good photos, but the vocabulary of each option will help the creator inflect his and her visual language.

Thanks for the video and the comparison shots. For virtually all shots I found the M6 variants much more pleasing to the eye due to the framing and composition. Images look cleaner, more balanced. So I imagine you probably took all shots with the M6 first. The image with the dog is the best example. The M6 photograph is, in my opinion, much more compelling than the M8 one. But it's really all in the framing for me. Otherwise, the film shots seem to be show cooler colors, lower contrast, some grain and a brighter exposure&look overall.

Nice comparison video! I was curious about this comparison as I don’t really shoot 35mm film (I do shot some 120 occasionally though) but I’m looking at getting a film M. I own the M8 but rarely use it as I’m not a big fan of crop sensors. I’ve actually been thinking about selling it. Ektachrome is a transparency film. Transmitted colour is different to reflected colour. They are not directly comparable. Looking at these prints, I think the M8 is the clear winner but if you make transparencies from the unprocessed digital images and looked through a viewer I think you might come to a different conclusion. Projected images are an awkward half-way house. How you could show any of this online I cannot imagine!

  • @markharris5771
    @markharris5771 5 лет назад

Like yourself I much prefer shooting with B&W film at 35mm. I usually say it’s because I have full control of the entire process but when you said you like the space it takes you to I fully got that.
I agree there’s a limited market for Ektachrome and being a wildlife and landscape photographer I should be drawn to it. However, I find it difficult to give it any love, but I’m not a big e-6 fan which I think is down to my respiratory difficulties and not being able to develop it like I can Portra 160 or Fugifilm Pro 160 NS. Theres also that rather strange green tint. FP160NS can give a strong pink/magenta tint if you don’t wash it before developing, just a thought. You’d think: "Landscape? Green must be good” but it won’t work that way because the areas of rock or water you’d want to stick out from green won’t. To its credit it isn’t as massively oversaturated like Velvia or Provia.
Thank you for doing this video, your effort is appreciated and the music was brilliant.

Another fine video. I must admit I don't have a digital Leica but I do have a Sony A7III which is none too shoddy in performance. I really like the 3D pop from the film, evident in the coffee cup and the KFC billboard. I think you can get quite close to filmic with lots of post on digital but I still prefer film, it would be cool to get your thoughts when they release the 120 version of Ekta. Film is the winner for me but hey, that's the beauty of choice! thanks again.

The film has a smoother look but the colours are too close to digital for me. I agree that some of the film images fall a bit flat but if you are photographing a specific subject in the right lighting, a film like this will look beautiful. I think one of the main reasons to use this film would be so you can have tangible slides that you can archive. I love looking at slides on a light table.

  • @neilgenower9950
    @neilgenower9950 5 лет назад

Cheers Paul, interesting comparison. You should make a print from the Ektachrome, the grain structure gives the pictures character. The difference between digital and film, to me anyway, is the difference between a feature film and a news report. The news report is "real" and therefore needs to look like reality, the feature film is fiction or art and needs to have a gauze between the viewer and the movie. I see film and digital in a similar way.

M8 has always struck me as close to Kodachrome color, which from my film days was always hotter and more saturated than Ektachrome. I’m surprised by the greenish cast to Ektas. I’d be interested to see whether is shows up in prints from the negatives. It was also noticed that the M8s were flatter than the Ektas-no surprise. For some reason the M9 color ain’t the same as the M-8, or I’d say go for the full frame.
Just to reiterate: Print the Ektas before you dismiss it. You could certainly play with color correction gels.

Thanks for the comparison Paul, I myself am a B&W film shooter....did prefer the Ektachrome over the digital....would I go out and get it, probably not.,not saying its bad ,but for the amount of color I shoot Ive become a big fan of Portra400 and Fujipro400H......just love film shooting.....actually sold all my digital, and of course keep up the awesome work on these vids, I look forward to them! Cheers

Hi Paul, thanks for this second video on Ektachrome. When shooting slide film, you should try to avoid scenes with a huge dynamic range. Bright skies and saturated gras, etc. are not what most slide films handle well. You should use color print film for that (or B/W). With slide film, always keep the sun in your back, to get the richest saturation. Having said this, I liked the results from Ektachrome and the M8. In some cases the Eaktachrome gave a typical, nice film look. No wonder, I guess. Have you ever tried to use the standard M8 settings and shooting just JPEG? It might come even closer than the (slightly) postprocessed DNGs. I usually use it with my M8, when not shooting it in B/W.

I compared the jpegs off the M8 and there was very little in it thats why I decided to use the DNG files.

I’m very late here, following that first video of your using Ektachrome. I mainly use digital but grew up on film. I have used Ektachrome and its predecessor a lot, plus Kodachrome, Velvia and Provia. Unlike your first video, to my eye something was well off with the film pics here. Not at all like I get. To me they seemed flat and under saturated and with a definite cyan/greeny hue that isn’t normal. Presumably at the scannning stage?

Interesting! IMO, Ektachrome is not the best slide film on the market. Perhaps a comparison between M8 and Fuji Provia or Velvia would have been closer. Thanks anyway, great vid!

The M6 images were better overall. The M8 looks good but wasn’t comparable to most & on par with only a few.

Have to agree with you here. The M6 images were very good. The M8 images looked generally to be over processed and saturated. Even with virtually no editing it seems the colour of the M8 doesn't quite match the film.

Let's hope they resurrect the Cibachrome print technology soon. To my knowledge this was the best system to make prints of slide film.

The Ektachrome certainly has a distinctive look about it compared with the digital. Whether someone likes it more or less is really a matter of personal preference - I personally liked the M8 more, but I think the bigger issue is that with digital you have more flexibility to create the particular look you want in post. With film, to a much greater extent it is what it is.

See, no harsh sunlight and this film gets immediately better. Yet green tint is still present in some pictures. I'd recommend skylight or light magenta filter to counter that tint. On the other hand, I would swap this film for Fuji Provia any day of the week...

great idea, 1st couple or so I prefer digital (colors) was deeper/richer, red mail boxes (?) film was more pleasing, next couple similar, one with 2 guys digital exposure is off, too dark, where film looks mo' natural (focus point were opposite) rest mostly comparable. Oh course in post digital has far wide dynamic range. I shoot lot of B&W film, a little provia, but tend to use digital more for color. Unfornuately I have never shoot with any Lecia. Thanks.

I love digital, I love film... but every one of those pictures, I preferred the feel of the film. Could you match that look on digital with a slight, slight desaturation, touch of grain, drop the contrast a tiny amount, take the edge off the sharpening? Anyway, it's a great illustration of why there's still a place for film.

  • @ernestthomas9406

Ur music really added to the video & I noticed Ur bokeh is nice, but still the music was kickin man. By me shooting film sometimes I wonder does the Ektacrome have less grain than Tri-x? But still all film has it's own unique look, but digital is all about settings I think.

Maybe im the odd one out but I like the rendering and colors better from the M8. Maybe its the zeiss, but ive seen other videos and there is just something about the M8 sensor that draws me towards it. Color comes out warm and creamy.
I already have an XT3 but I keep being drawn back to the colors and rendering of the M8. Logically I know I don't need an M8 but it just keeps calling my name.

It would be interesting to see how an M9 stacks up against Ektachrome. The separation between subject and background just isn’t that strong on the M8 in this comparison. To me, that makes the film photos win out...except for skin tones. The film skin tones are just unpleasant. Enjoyed the comparison and review as always!

Nice comparison mate I watched this on the phone so hard for me to spot a great difference I preferred some of each to be honest I wonder how the preferences would have gone had you bunched all shots together then asked viewer film or digi they looked very close to me. It's great to see Kodak coming back into it I worked on a chemical plant in Yorkshire for 15 years two massive money makers for the place were products called 2c5na and 4c3na seriously dodgy stuff that was an intermediate in colour films Kodak were a huge customer then digital kicked off and the company lost millions in orders for the product the Rs literally fell out of the market resulting in redundancies. I'm sure I could knock up a fresh batch for Kodak for a price 😏 anyway top vid mate 😎👍🏼

Hi Paul, thank you ever so much for sharing your insights and a nice comparison of film vs. digital.
However, I have to disagree, as you are comparing apples to oranges.
Slides are meant to be projected on a big screen--only then the colors come to live; and you'd be surprised, how much detail you'd be able to see in the shadows deemed lost (especially on some of the pics from your first video). While you can scan slides and view them on a computer monitor, you have to live with the shortcomings of any device converting the analog image to a digital one. Whereas a digital camera is already made to produce something meant to be output on a computer monitor.
How I can say this? I am guilty of photographing tons of slides (I prefer Fuji Provia, though, for its more refined and more natural colors) and scanning them; and the difference between the scanned image and the projected one is tremendous.
Thanks again for all the content you put up and the effort you put in creating it--very much like your way of presenting it. Cheers, Michael

The film photos look so much better to me. I realize if you edited your M8 pics, they can look pretty much the same though, but this is why I prefer film, I don't have to edit it as much to get it to look like I want it to.
