- The soloist here is Alexander Detinkin, but we also hear some terrific bass from Vladimir Miller and Alexander Ort, with Ort dropping to contra D (D1) at the end of the piece, not to mention the many sustained As and Gs from both bassos throughout.

I love Male Voice Choir. I don’t understand Russian (or Welsh) but I’m smitten by this! Unbelievable beauty. I will listen to it on a clear starry night and float to infinity. The beautiful side of melancholy! ❤️🙏
In the deepest sadness is the highest beauty . Starry night here on Anglesey
@@pwood5733 you two (Jane) are onto something here, please elaborate...
Not sure if you noticed but this is not only a male voice choir, but there are lady’s in this as well. Not my favourite version of this beautiful song but definitely up there with the best. The music is so moving.
For sheer beauty of a tenor voice, this solo cannot be beat.
It is pure naturalness, no unnecessary vibrato, or unnecessary
operatic quality.
what do you mean, 'no unnecessary vibrato'? And 'operatic' It's not opera, it's ancient folk music.
Wunderbar ,Zauberhaft. Fantastisch....
Like many, I started listening to this because of Miller and Ort, but was totally beguiled by Detinkin's performance - bravo
I’ve been searching for this song since I heard the late Nicolai Gedda perform it in a documentary. It took me a year to find it but Wow! This is one of the most gorgeous songs I’ve ever heard. I speak very little Russian but I don’t need to understand the words. I understand the feeling that only music can communicate. So gorgeous!
Monotonously the little bell is sounding,
And the way is a little bit dusty,
And over the plain fields
Flows the song of the coachman.
There is so much longing in this song.
So much emotion in the familiar tune,
That in my cool breast,
My heart lights with fire.
And I remembered other nights,
And the fields and forests of my home,
And to my eyes, which had been dry for a long time,
A tear rose like a spark.
Monotonously the little bell is sounding,
Softly echoing from afar...
And my coachman fell silent
And the way before me is long and far.
@@ltlarrow1 thank you.
Incomparable. The brave, non-pushing soloist. And sweet basses, supporting.
Absolutely priceless!!
I saw the Male choir with Alexander Detinkin and Vladimir Miller last Christmas in Uppsala Sweden, a truly memorable moment!
So very fine for this tenor who leads beautifully this fine choral in depths of musical excellence. together this special group has highest rankings In artistic greatness and sensitivity-- the tenor is terrific and a beauty of all tenors and bel canto
une merveille qui transporte vers le Divin. MERCI infiniment...MERCI

The Lonely Coach-Bell
Oh, how lonely the coach bell is ringing,
And the dust from the road fills the air.
And the coachman’s sorrowful singing
Floats across the wild fields in despair.
That sad song overflows with such feeling,
So much grief can be heard in that strain,
That my cold heart, long hardened and weary
In my bosom was kindled again.
I recalled other nights, other wand’rings,
And the fields and the forests so dear,
And my eyes, which so long have been arid,
Became moistened like jewels with a tear.
Oh, how lonely the coach bell is ringing,
As it swings in the night to and fro.
And my coachman has now fallen silent,
And I still have a long way to go.
The Coach Bell
In the distance a bell, faintly sounding
Through the dust rising up from the road
And a coachman is heard singing sadly,
That I ask, what that song might forebode.
So much sadness there is in that sound;
So much grief in that lonely refrain,
That my heart which was hardened and weary,
In my breast was re-kindled again.
I recalled nights long gone, other places
And the fields and the forests so dear,
That my eyes which so long have been arid
Became moist with a glistening tear.
In the distance the bell, faintly sounding
Is an echo from times so remote;
And my coachman, now silent and weary
And the road fades away with that note.
I heard this piece for the first time when I saw Akira Kurosawa's adaptation of Dostoevsky's The Idiot... the music and the cinematography were so gorgeous... and it set up the main relationships so well.
This was a great piece! I wish there was more of A. Ort somewhere because he is one of the best oktavists according to me!

Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you!
I'm speechless.
Absolutely stunning
Mehr als nur ein Lied! Mehr, als eine Stimme, mehr als Musik! Es ist "göttlich!"
What is it about this song? Everyone I have seen sing this song, even if different voices, it is so beautiful. I love it no matter who sings it.

Que perfeição !! (10.12.20)
Ederra benetan, Alexander! Hau gozamena! Miragarria!
So spitzenklasse!
Detinkin is very good; I still think I like Albatayev's performance a little better. Both spin out the ending beautifully, which is something I appreciate as a listener. My speakers did not render the oktavist line well (stupid computer!)
Larger than life!
Amazing.
Geweldig mooi gezongen

Compared to the trained experts here I'm sure I'll come across as a troglodyte.
But as fine as these voices are, I personally I have been spellbound each time I listen to the earlier version by Vladimir Albatayev. That performance by him (and of the many others accompanying him) is, to me, magical.
I share your view. I no of nothing else that is quite so sublime. I am addicted to it!
Robert Skip Curran i am in the same case than you this song had a Powerful spellbound on my deep down of all fibers of my heart éternal magnificent song
Arthur Vincent completly abdict like you never tired to hear this diamond song
I totally agree with this remark. The Albatayev version is of the utmost beauty. When I first came upon it I would listen to it every day for days on end.
dezangerman . Do you know the name of the choir that accompanied Albatatev? Those octavists were superb.
A beautiful interpretation of a beautiful song 🤨🤓💕
How many angels can dance on a pinhead, I am sure, occupy minds but in reality we hear and feel the overall performance. For me this, as a live performance, would have left the audience in no doubt, that their evening could not have been better spent. A beautiful well balanced performance, topped with a soaring female presence.
show d bola a voz do maluco
Minunat!
There are a few impressive G1 as well and in my oppinion Miller is the one that resonates the most. He has an unbelievable projection (he is like a titan) combared to other basso nowadays. Also there is a difference between fried/harsh notes and fully/rich notes which can fill up a room with harmonics. Zlatopolsky vs Pasjukov for ex. I honestly would say that Pasjukov is 100 times better because he creates a deep, rich but also pleasent sound while Zlatopolsky sounds too loud and harsh even though he goes lower. Same thing here with MIller, he has the depth which is very rare. Pasjukov and Miller are the best! ;)

I'm impressed...when do they breathe?
I wondered this as well! The low D at the end is impressive, but the sustained notes throughout (especially the contra As) would be quite a challenge.

I've put it to one of my playlists. Thank you for uploading!
@@TheOktavismChannel from my own experience - I feel like the lower I go, the less breath and the more pressure the tones require. Especially contra octave, that's becoming extreme, it feels like not much air going through the cords, while great pressure is needed both for creating and maintaining the sound. Only way to tweak volume that low for me is to play with resonance. So I believe keeping the contra A for that long is not the greatest problem, but rather mitigating all the risks of voice distortion that would instantly disrupt the sound making you just exhale voiceless.
@@geuros I would agree.
The other thing is trading breathing. When done well it is really difficult to detect. But your singers have to be well blended. But I've listened to this a couple of times back to back now and can't really hear any obvious breaks or pauses where they would breath, so it beats me. :D
EDIT: I found a spot. At 0:47 one of the oktavists scoops into the note rather than landing right on it. Best I can tell one of them took a breath and reentered. I might also be imagining this, but it sounds like there is a slight break two-ish seconds before where I assume the other man took a breath.
@@LordQueezle in Rachmaninov's We Praise Thee (or Hymn Thee) sung by St. Petersburg's State Cappella Choir, Ort and Miller descend to contra Eb, and you can clearly hear one of them taking breath and re-engaging. Wonderful stuff! :-)
Have you the lyrics?
(words: Ivan Makarov - music: Alexander Gurilev)
The bell clatters in unison,
And the road dusts lightly,
And sadly on a flat field
The song of the coachman is filled,
Filled with the song of the coachman.
So much feeling in that sad song. So much sadness in the melody of the native,
In my chest, cold, cold,
My heart burned with fire.
The heart was on fire!
And I remembered other nights, And native field and forests,
And eyes, long since dry,
Came running, as a spark, a tear. Came running, as a spark, a tear. The bell clatters in unison,
From a distance, yielding slightly… And my coachman fell silent, and the road
Before me is far, far.
Before me is far, far!
Lovely but I'm a bit confused as to numbering of octaves. If middle C is C4 then Ort is singing a D2 at the end not a D1.
No, It's also real D1 there. It's clearly audible after 4:47 (when the choir turns into silence) and ends at 4:50. It's not Osmin's D. It's real D1!
Departament EDC I reckon the cheap sound system I've got running off my PC can't reproduce D1 :-(
Hopefully in about a month I'll have my high end audio system set up. I'll then sit back and truly relish this piece :-)
Departament EDC
This is correct. Derek is certainly right to hear a D2 on the last choir because quite a few of the basses are singing a D2. You can hear Ort, however, briefly, and he is down on D1. Not a loud note, but to the ear of one who listens for these kind of notes, it's certainly there.
Can confirm, especially if you slow it down to 0.5x speed....just majestic.
Why don't world politicians get up with this song every morning? I'm sure the world would be a much better place to live.
What is the note after 4:20?
A1
This most be the legendary Russian soul
Go head
Bless all the Russian soldiers away from home suffering
I think Орт is best.
While I have enjoyed this piece with a much faster tempo, I can't help but think this very slow tempo is beautiful in an unfortunate, mannered way.
The D1 is barely audible. They should've sang an E1 instead.
russian.....
This voice is more 'alive' or more 'bright' - more 'electric' than in the other versions, but more flawed at least here - the vibrato comes and goes without any reason, the phrasing is inconsistent - and the falsetto at the end just terrible (though his potential is near-infinite). ORT between 3:58 and 4:12.
@Nicolas de la Forge, Can you do it better?
The song's lyrics are not 'bright and electric'. Rather the lyrics beg for precisely this 'flawed' performance.
M van veen - no and neither can the choirmaster do better but I guarantee you that he heard every defect and more than what I listed; it's not doing better, it's having an ear to hear.
don't misunderstand me, I adore Detinkin's voice - and the choir, I come back to hear it again and again.
@@mahvelous1 Oh no, that's preposterous. He's just missing it and it's not related to the lyrics - though I know the notion that you're trying to convey.
Absolutely beautiful.
