He was the best in the business! In fact, each member of Led Zeppelin could be considered the greatest of all-time at their respective instruments. That's what makes them the "Greatest Rock-&-Roll Band of All-Time"
Christopher Chambers I was hooked on LZ the first time I heard Good Times Bad Times on the radio, and that album rocked my whole world - I couldn't even believe how good it was. To me, every single note was perfect. Looking back, I have to dial back that assessment, but still.... I think it was Page's vision and work ethic in the studio that made them what they were. Without Page, there would have been no LZ - the King of sloppy guitar solos. While the band definitely would have had a different flavour, the others could be replaced. For instance, the best drummer I ever saw live was Aynsley Dunbar. Ginger Baker was also a great - and available - drummer. JPJ, because of his versatility, was my second favourite after Page.
one major thing separating drummers like JB from what came later in rock.. and a bit of the earlier stuff too before Zeppelin is that he was trained to play jazz. the more and more rock acts fell away from being rooted in something more in the realm of 'art music' rather than popular music, the worse rock and roll got.. this is great
I mean freddie merucry is better than plant (keep in mind im a zeppelin fan) paul mccartney is a candidate but i truly think that jpj jimmy and bonham are all best at their instrument. But robert gets beaten by freddie imo
During the intro you can tell it seems incomplete... until JPJ jumps in with a heavy bass line. It’s astonishing how talented all of them were and how they worked in synchronicity
Xander Etherington you're and idiot. let's put it this way, which band sold more records, which band has the more influential musicians, which band dethroned the Beatles?.............nuf said.......mic drop!
He's only just turned 29 here. Jesus, he looks 40+. Keith Moon's decline was even more prominent - he positively blew up like a balloon in his last few years. The energy just isn't here in this video. See the live stuff up until 1972 or so, esp. the non-mixed live stuff. Epicness that will never be repeated. By '77 things were rough. All that touring. All that partying. Literally creating the stadium rock tour. It took its toll. They did manage to pull it back together to a very good extent by the '79 Knebworth show (sadly, their last), esp. "Achilles Last Stand." Good if bitter sweet signing off.
I did not like this solo. I could not take it. I figured he was drumming old style. So thanks for pointing out that it doesn't suck, I just "don't get" what he's doing. Seriously. Cheers.
He R.i.p.!!!ty 73 to 79 live, nobody made the arena walls shake..like in classic movie sanfrancisco, earthquake..n his drumming in going to sanfrancusco.what did Robert say, not dazed or confused anymore..great job with video!!! Msg many nights, ty zep 4 being loyal gentlemen, truly honoring a giant, this includes Peter grant, who would stand on side of msg stage hands folded , watching bonzo head shakin ,his long kool silk scarf flowing..looking back so grateful ,is mindblowing!!!
Different drummers do it for different reasons. I can tell you in the case of Bonham, he's definitely not keeping time by counting out loud. The mouth movements are more of a feel thing. He's feeling the music and what he's playing on a very deep level. The mouth movement is due to his vocalizations of being engrossed in the rhythms.
Funky ass hell! Damn he is Totally Awesome! Let there Be A drummer! Here he is! For the greater good of the nations! This dude is transcendental! Words cannot describe him!
John Henry Bonham was the backbone to Led Zeppelin, a very unique drummer as there was no one like him, his son Jason comes very close but not quite RIP Bonzo
I just read somewhere that the 77 tour was never recorded in multi-track, which is why Page didn't include any of it one the Zeppelin DVD release. It was also delayed for a month at its beginning because of illness to Plant, who had laryngitis, and then was cut short when Plant's son died that summer. Lots of bad mojo in 77, for what ended up being their last jaunt through America.
Page is my favorite guitarist of all time, but I have to kindly and respectfully disagree. I think Hendrix probably had the best stage presence. Monterey was no joke, man. Hendrix was on fire from day one. Page took some time to come out of his shell. Look at Zep’s show at Albert Hall and you’ll see his shy side.
@@MrAlexarctica Hendrix wasn't sexy and was just working with his guitar without dancing or properly working with the audience. He's nothing compared to Jimmy. And Jimmy is way more emotional and versatile.
Jimmy page shredding out riffs in 1977 with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth with bonzo ripping ass behind him has got to be one of the greatest things ever

pfff I know what you're saying Pat. hell I smoked crack for like a year straight every day and am now way overweight at age 28... dont drink or do non prescription drugs though. he didn't die of a heart attack though did he? I think it was asphyxiation from choking on vomit.
Theres MORE to this video, he does ANOTHER 20 min +/- and most of it "one armed" i believe. always trying to better himself due to his left arm does amazing things pn its own (as if from another dimension) he plays most of whats next "right armed only"
I wonder if JohnBonham was the insperation for that Henson dude that created that drummer muppet called "Animal!!" Lol!! Bonham was a fckn BEAST!!! on those drums, I mean, This is clearly not just mindless banging away, there's complete intentional guided fckn patterns that he's hitting and it actually feels as if the drums themselves are speaking!! Like when Gilmore, SRV, Santana etc, etc, do a guitar solo, and that guitar speaks!! Well that's exactly what this is.... 🤘🏼💀✌🏼
LedZepMan97 I saw Jimmy Page front row, good 'ol general admission on the Outrider tour with Jason Bohnam. I have him burned into my mind, low slung Les Paul, leaned allllll the way back, looking at the ceiling, eyes rolled back in his head, fucking totally out of his mind. Sooo good.
John Bohnam will always be remembered as the man who played tambourine on battle of evermore

Anyone that knows zeppelin knows incredible this song is
I love the drums in it, Bonham kills it
I love the end section. The instrumental version on the remaster is great.

Greatest drummer of all time. Greatest rock band of all time. Period
Its terrible to see Bonham just get in worse shape as the years go by. He was such a good drummer, and 32 is no age to go. Amazing solo!
Jimmy too . His playing here was pretty sloppy
@@andrewcruz7595 gotta agree, and I actually like his "sloppy" style, but this is different; sounded out of tune and kinda a disaster...
You could say the same of Pages playing as he slipped into more booze and harder drugs

What makes it even worse is that he probably burned 2000 calories a night just with his hi-hat foot. Yet still….
bonham idolized buddy rich that's why he loved to do the one hand drum roll like buddy used to do .
that hi-hat running off ,DAMN IT! love this man.

The Original Drum Machine! RIP my Brother!
Bonzo is the best drummer in the history of the MUSIC ... He is a L-E-G-E-N-D
AND THAT'S THE TRUTH BROTHER 100%
He is a LEGEND but sorry I disagree :)
Cant get enough of that bass line
Bonzo really gets into the solo at 6:22 when he digs in on Max Roaches "The Drum Also Waltzes"! I think he really loved the old bebop jazz drummers.

the Albert hall dvd is the BEST BONHAM solo and up there w/ Ginger Baker's Cream farewell concert as the 2 best I've seen.
agreed brother, ruclips.net/video/-tXSPTkGrVI/видео.html
Agree completely with what Christopher Chambers said. There are points in his solo where it sounds like 4 drummers playing at the same time.
So excellent. Historical drumming solo. Super awesome Bonzo unique one of a kind.

I was lucky enough to be at this exact show in the Kingdome, July, 77
I was at the Cleveland show Nov '77
Bonham way over the top of his triplets here. Yep, he's the best in R&R, NO doubt about it. Seeing/hearing him live is an experience unto itself.
A man that needs no introduction... the man who played tambourine on Battle of Evermore
The song before this was B.O.E. they were all lined up from L to R on stools. That is why Plant said what he said yo.
Not one of Pagey's better days.
@Ron P that's sadly true
Rob Billeaud Page’s guitar seemed out of tune, plus I think he was doing heroin at that time frame
A lot of staccato notes at times which was quite different than how he normally played...lol.
His guitar sounded like a wet noodle in this recording.
That’s the best part.
Jonesy's bass is a mean one in this.
enjoy the greatest rock n roll drummer ever I surely did

Why is the concerts of 1977 are so rare?
SuperTatish They WERE rare because Zeppelin damn near quit. Plant’s kid died that year and he almost gave it up.
