This is why you shouldn’t use coconut oil on your natural hair

- Coconut oil doesn’t ACTUALLY moisturize your hair, it really “clogs” the hair cuticle. It prevents moisture from getting in while making your hair feel like straw. Similar to blue magic aka grease
Please don’t come on here with “it’s a cultural thing you wouldn’t understand” argument 🙄
I’ve been here since the beginning of the natural hair movement and I know how this started. People started using coconut oil out of desperation because we were looking for a way to moisturize our hair
I am behind the chair and I experience various hair textures and coconut oil has been detrimental to them all! After I clarified her hair and started styling it, she said she felt an IMMEDIATE difference.
Oily hair does not equal moisturized hair
We actually moisturized her hair and the end result was soft touchable curls

Ok, I thought it was just me. Coconut oil has never worked for me. It just sits on top of my hair like "Hey girl"
Do you know your hair porosity levels. Knowing this is very key Tor knowing what products both natural and unnatural works Best for your hair
Before you use coconut oil, wet your hair, spray it up. It helps the oil seep in. The water also opens them pores up, so the coconut oil can dissolve in. My hair is long because of this.
"Hey gurrrl, what you doing? Nothing? Me too." Haha
@@yahelisrael6958 I have high porosity and it still just sits on top
@@thekalenichannel1812 yes because coconut oil as with any oil is a sealant. Meaning it mean to seal in moisture. No oil is good for Moisturizer there are other products for that. But they other oils like Almond or Avocado oil
Use whatever works for your hair. Some say coconut oil is awesome for them and some say it isn't
True I have a niece who only use coconut oil and has the most silky hair. I tried it but nope, did not work for me 😢
Exactly
It works for me
It’s a hi-po vs lo- po thing
Are you always that contrary? Denying logic? HOW do you think OIL moisturizes???
I'm afro caribbean from Bonaire and my great grandmother at 92 had waist long hair and always used coconut oil and braided her hair. We all have used it, we never had any issues.
same. i honestly think not all coconut oils are the same quality- and im not just talking about refined and unrefined.
I used coconut nut oil on my hair since I was in college. It’s best for my 4b hair. I also use castor, olive, and rosemary oil on my hair and occasionally I use blue magic. I’m allergic to mousse. Should I use gel instead?
Coconut oil works great as a sealer on wet or damp hair!
This does NOT apply to those of us with high porosity hair. Coconut oil helps to seal moisture in. If you have low porosity hair then it will sit on top of your hair and build up. Know your hair porosity. Everything isn’t for everybody.
Omoh, so hair too has porosity 😮
Facts!! I have high porosity hair and I stopped using it for about a year to see the difference. My hair became dryer no matter how much water and leave-ins I used and broke more. My hair needs oil.
@@julietabah4928 Sure does. Search for hair porosity test. You usually need one stand of your hair and water. We talk a lot about curl pattern but porosity is more important and most of us don’t know what porosity we have.
@@Blizerton For years I thought I was low porosity and I couldn’t figure out why my hair would still be dry 2 days after I did something to my hair that was supposed to keep hair moisturized. Learning the correct porosity was a game changer. And coconut oil was and is key!
This should've been pinned 2 weeks ago.
Coconut oil is my hair's favorite oil. It's not the moisturizer, it's the sealant. If you're using it as a solo moisturizer, that's why it doesn't work for you.
Precisely. I use my oil mix as a sealant after moiturizing with water. My hair is loc'd now post cancer. Pre-cancer my hair was armpit length. Now my hair is bra strap length.
What is it sealing?
@@TWForeeever It seals in the moisture. I spritz my hair with a water/rose water mix then use the oil to seal in the moisture.
@@lisah.1024 Oil and water don’t mix though, so how is the oil sealing anything in?
@@TWForeeever Precisely. Your hair is spritzed or misted with water, not soaking wet. Then the oil is used over the hair to seal in the moisture. No mixing to be done. I've been using this method on my hair since I went natural back in 2010 and it works. If you've never done this to your hair, please watch a few RUclips vids about moisturizing and sealing to get a clearer understanding.
I've been using the littleexttra reactivaate hair growth serum every night prior to I sleep. I massage it into my scalp a little bit. I already can see results! My hair fall has reduced a lot, and I can new baby hairs emerging. The serum is gentle and doesn't feel tacky or greasy. It lasts a long time too! I've been using it for almost a month now. If you're dealing with hair fall or bald spots, you should definitely give it a try. It really helps.
My hair feels fuller, looks more denser, and I'm even noticing additional growth at my hairline since I started using reactivate hair serum.
The Reactivate Hair Growth Serum has gone above my hopes. Absolutely recommended.
Final result is simply stunning.
If it's water-based, it moisturizes.
If it's oil-based, it locks in the state of your hair.
But I thought water ultimately dries shit out- like tryin to moisturize your skin with water. It will work- for about 60 seconds, before leaving your skin dryer than it was to begin with 🤷🏽♀️
@@poutinedream5066 That's the whole point of the LCO/LOC method. You put the moisture in your hair first, then lock it in with oil/lipids so the liquid (water) doesn't evaporate as quickly.
Some people have hair types that hold on to moisture (for better and for worse), some people can't keep moisture in their hair for the life of them without oil aids (myself), and many others slide all over that spectrum in ways one wouldn't expect. That's why it's important to understand your body and how it behaves with stimuli (water, oils, handling) instead of just blindly doing crap to it hoping everything works out.
If your hair dries out abnormally quick after watering it, try applying a water-based cream to extend the time it stays moisturized, so you can lock it in with a light oil after. Hope this helps! ✌🏿
Exactly.
@@poutinedream5066no water moisturises but because it dries out you have to lock it in with oil, oil didn't penetrate skin and hair that's why you use water to pull it in. You need to balance the two.
Well, like opinions, everyone's body chemistry is different. Therefore, different things will work for different people....
It’s always “don’t use this” but never give any better alternatives 😭
Only water "moisturizes." Coconut oil, olive oil, argan oil etc can penetrate the hair shaft. Castor oil, jojoba oil, shea butter will coat your hair. When applied onto damp hair, it's called "sealing" because it seals the water in, so these coating oils are sometimes also called sealing oils.
For dry hair, your best friend is a spray bottle with water in it.
For extra dry hair, when I finish washing it, while it's still damp I'll use a light leave-in conditioner that my hair works well with (to penetrate) and then something heavier like shea butter to "seal" the water in while it's still damp I'll then twist it up. I'll apply conditioner then shea butter section-by-section, right before I twist that very section up. (If it's starting to dry, spray the hair with that water spray bottle.) By doing this, my hair remains moist and resilient for days rather than drying into fragile straw within an hour.
That part.
@@RM-cw1ix : Thank you for sharing this info with us 😊🔥🔥🔥.
I know!!🤔
@@RM-cw1ix in addition to this some people’s hair (like mine) is super dry so we actually need products with humectants in it (think of a leave in conditioner) to help your hair hold onto that water, and then a sealant such as an oil or butter to keep that moisture trapped in your hair. For me I use the TGIN leave in conditioner paired with a mineral oil butter (my hair get super dry, especially in winter cuz I live in a super dry and cold state), that really locks all the water in my hair and prevent it from escaping out. Then every took weeks I make sure to remove that hair butter with a Castile soap shampoo (it works really well for my hair, but not everyone can handle it), apply a deep conditioner, rinse that out, apply the leave in and mineral oil butter and repeat the process.

Curly hair always amazes me too. Healthy natural hair like that is so incredibly gorgeous. 🔥
@WillowT Dog as someone with curly hair, (a different type to this), I'd kill for straight! You can have the choice with straight, whereas with curly, you're stuck with it. This style though is gorgeous, though. Coconut oil is excellent for my hair
I'm from the Caribbean, and coconut oil is what we use growing up. The problem is so many companies are making it and adding stuff to it. For us in the Caribbean, our mothers and grandmothers made it from scratch, which is a process it goes through. It cleans your scalp it was also used on a baby's scalp if their scalp become dry.
My first two babies got cradle cap, but I used coconut oil on my third baby's scalp, and she never got cradle cap or dry scalp at all. Focus was on the scalp, though, not the hair.
I'm Trinidadian and was only taught to use coconut oil on your skin. I use castor oil on my scalp.
Yes I've used it for my grandson whn he had a small diaper rash.
Yes sis,we Caribbean ppl been using coconut oil in baby's hair and skin, it is a tradition. We make our coconut oil so it's all natural, I've always loved my coconut oil but I add other oils to it to make my own concoction.

I think it's all about a person's porosity. My hair prefer extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil over coconut oil, but I know many works great on. We have to find what works on our individual locks and that has nothing to do with ethnicity. What works wonders for one person may not work for you.

I don't think coconut oil is the bad guy, i just think people are incorporating into their routine the wrong way. Coconut oil is moisturizing and can also be hydrating if used on wet/damp hair as a deep conditioner or leave in. Its a sealant. Not a serum. Its not water based. I personally experienced moisturizing/ hydrating benefits when done that way.
Oil neither moisturizes, nor hydrates. It is hydrophobic. It will seal in moisture because of that, which is why it works on damp wet hair, because wet hair is already moisturized.

I love the end results, wow!!!❤
Coconut oil is used in many Asian countries. In their cooking, as a moisturizer and as a hair oil. But each person's skin or hair react differently to coconut oil or moisturizer.
I'm Indian. Our hair texture is very different, it generally ranges from straight to loose or bouncy curls. And coconut oil works very well for us, to protect from the heat and humidity and also promote growth. But it may not be suitable for hair types like these.
totally different climate. coconut oil antifungal and drying.
Asian hair and black hair are typically on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to the cuticle. So while coconut oil works for Asian hair which usually has a very low-lying cuticle to add over top of the already smooth cuticle and make it slicker, when added to black hair with its very open cuticle, it just coats the hair layers, making the strands look and feel more ragged instead of smoother. We really need hair science to become a thing because so far, it really has not been.
True. And can depend on where on the skin. I can use it on every part of my body except face. It breaks my face out.

For us i.e. Indians, coconut oil z an emotion... We literally live wd dat oil. May b there r sum pple in ds world on whom ds oil doesn't work but for a majority of Indians, it's d go to hair oil..and it works wonders
I've never had a problem with coconut oil either. I mix it with my conditioner for deep moisture treatments, I use it in my 3 oil mixture for my scalp, and sometimes use it as a light seal...never have issues washing it out. Maybe people with low porosity hair have issues idk

@@JustMeVanessathere isn’t actually a very big difference between organic/unrefined and the “cheap stuff.” However, a lot of people that have more textured hair also have lower porosity hair. As an Indian from Kerala who uses coconut oil for everything, it depends on your environment. If you are in a more tropical area with moisture in the air like India, coconut oil allows for the moisture to lock in well. Otherwise, in the US, it will not be as helpful due to the comparative dryness.

The problem isn’t oil. The problem is people don’t know HOW to use the oils that they’re using. You should NEVER apply any products to your curly hair while it’s dry and I see people doing this all the time on social media. Natural Hair products should be applied to WET hair only. They are to seal in moisture to hair that’s already wet.
Also, there are oils that can penetrate the cortex of the hair to help moisturize. Amla oil, & babassu oil are two that I use. People are uneducated about the different types oils that are out here and how to use them.

So how would you personally hydrate your hair

When she shook her hair, my jaw dropped. Her hair is so beautiful and she’s glowing! Bless 🙏🏻
I think so too. Looks like although the stylist says that coconut oil doesn’t work it certainly looks like it’s been working for her.
🔥
🔥🔥🔥 wish i had hair. This is so beautiful. But I’m a surviving cancer patient and i lost all my hair and now looks like i have burnt scalp scars in the top and it won’t grow. But i really like what you did to her hair and i best she does too👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I’m a cancer survivor of 7 years now I’m still cancer free thank the lord!but I too lost all my hair but my Aide from from Guyana used some Indian oils on my scalp and my hair began to grow back in 8 month s time she kept my hair braided my hair grew back thicker and long again I’m going ask her what was the name of that stuff she was a Beautician and In Guyana so good luck 🍀- congratulations! on being a cancer survivor 😁
Have you tried (Hollywood bar)? It does work on some bald spots. God bless you 🙏

This looks amazing
So pretty ❤
God I wish I had a stylist near me who cared about the health of hair and not how good a weave looks 😩💜 you’re amazing
Natural hair stylist! Whole different world.
Yesssss. We have stylists not hair docs with the green thumb ❤
I LOVE her hair and all those gorgeous curls. She looks so happy at the end. You're a fantastic stylist.
I'm African American and jojoba with castor oil is best. if your hair is falling out a few drops of rosemary helps. Grapeseed is ok also.
Looks great!
I love this style ❤
Oils don’t moisturize they seal. Her hair is gorgeous and healthy, so if oils are a part of her regimen they’re clearly working for her. Definition is not the epitome of hair health, it’s a styling option. Just like any style you must adjust your products accordingly, not throw the sink out with the dishwater.
my curls are so porous. if I put coconut oil on after washing and moisturizing, when I wake up my hair has drank up all that coconut oil and looks so shiny & silky.
Coconut oil actually does cause drying issues in some of our hair… I can’t use it as a sealant. It does nothing for me. Especially to hair that has had too much protein, adding coconut oil makes the hair hard. My hair got crunchy until I stopped and switched to grapeseed oil. She didn’t say don’t use oils, but this client def needed to stop using coconut oil for the time being. There are women with 4c hair on RUclips that have said this. Let the stylist do what she does bc there is hair science involved. She knows this, so she explains it to her client properly.
In addition: coconut oil clarifies is what she said , yes it’s actually an antibacterial and antiviral oil that you can take to clear yeast inside and outside the body, heal rashes and other infections etc. it can even be used during home birth for the v-canal and perineal. It’s a powerful oil. But to be used as it needs to be used. She knows what she’s saying.
@@CrystalAlyse the stylist said she had to clarify her hair due to the client using the coconut oil. She meant she had to rid the hair of the buildup of coconut oil on her hair.
Coconut oil grew my hair and I noticed less shedding while using it. And definitely moisturizes my hair.
Exactly
So it's not a moisturizer but rather a moisture sealent. Meaning it locks in moisture but it doesn't add any. Which could be why it helped you with your shedding problem.
@Lovelee Universe well either way, my hair is in the middle of my back and very healthy. If I could show a picture I most definitely would.
Same. My hair hates any kind of oil. 🤷🏽♀️
@@GhanaMamba Yes. That's what oils and greases do. You put it on top of your moisturizing products.
💥👍🏾 that looks wonderful

I'm black and coconut oil works wonderful in my hair
Same.
Right.
Real coconut oil is what my Nana raised me to use. My hair been shit since I was told to stop using it. 😒 Different things work for different people.
Inexpensive natural hair treatments don't work for her business model.
But yes coconut oil and other natural products found in anyone's kitchen work wonders for people who like to nourish their hair instead of poison it with chemicals.
What's the purpose of commercial products? Hair looks good today, gone tomorrow 😣
Take a look at natural inexpensive hair products from Africa. Hair down to their waist, no breakage, and beautiful.
Jesus Christ can help you figure it out.
The Bible tells us when it comes to hairstyles: "ladies, if it costs an arm and a leg to maintain, don't believe them. It's never worth it."
Who has ears let them hear.
It’s a difference between low and high porosity. It makes my hair dry and brittle. I can’t do it.
The look of pure happiness and joy on her face at the end is all you need to see to know how much she absolutely loves her hair now. ❤
Excellent job,beautiful hair🎉❤
Looks great ❤
Coconut oil isn’t a moisturizer it’s a sealant. And it works for some and not others because of hair porosity. I’ve used coconut oil on my hair for 10 years and my hair loves it!
Exactly! Not everyone is aware of the science behind oils and uses it incorrectly and in turn assume it’s not good.
So let's see. If I have trouble retaining moisture.....this is new since going to a salon 5 years ago and they used hot water to wash my hair. Hair never been same! Suggestions?
@@adifferentcookiefter deep conditioning you should use a leave in (spray or cream depending on your hair) and then use a oil to seal it in (coconut or avocado or apricot, depending on your hair) u could also mix different hair oils together.
@@makaliaporter9996 why do u say mix oils... I use oils and I get different results... I even mix oils like the oils I mixed for this seasons isn't agreeing because I get some breakage still... this only happens when I use certain oil mixtures..Im confused abt this one too
@@adifferentcookie U have to rinse with cool water to close the hair shaft.
Defining curls with what I use - The gatekeeper generation lol
I caught a glimpse and I use this same product. She’s using “Mousse Def” by The Doux 😊. Works like magic
@@nolanlee9066Thank you. It’s so annoying when people do that. They know we’re going to want to know the product.
@@angel1xoxo because for this method irs not about the product your use, its about the technique and detoxing your hair completely of oils and butters, washing every 5 to 7 days, and being consitent if you want to see result. Like without products my curls are already forming/have been formed after my first wash, by the time i finish conditioning my curls have entirely formed so im just using gel to hold the curls not the create curls

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼STUNNING!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Her hair looks very healthy, so the coconut oil is working for her!
I said the same thing.
Right? Like I don’t understand what this proved 😂
exactly what I was thinking
Coconut oil doesn’t moisturize your hair but it sure does helps detangle it.
That's exactly what I use it for on my wavy hair when it tangles! A little coconut oil and H2O straightens it out. Guess it depends on the hair type.
I use it as a pre-poo, it's great for detangling.
I love using it as a prepoo for this reason!
Yes! It's my favorite prepoo!
Great job, hair is on point
I find this really cool because this is how you would expect wigs or hair extensions to look but our natural hair with care can come out looking even better than ever. So beautiful ❤❤
Who are you????? Like what did I just watched? This is simply amazing. I didn’t know my hair could do this 😮

Coconut oil gives me awesome results. We all have different hair types and different needs :)
Agree!
Coconut oil leaves my hair dry-ish and dull looking.
Plus it smells rancid after a while...
Veryyyyyyy Nice - Her hair was popping with the curl defining hair style. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽.

I am Polynesian and Polynesians have used coconut oil for their hair and skin moisturizer before all these new hair products came out. My hair is thick and strong. I wash, put coconut oil on, comb and done - I don’t blow dry.
I was going to say, what did people do before hair products were a thing back in the day?...logic dictates its going to be something to hand, like coconuts.
That's what I do I wash add the oil while wet
I add oil in the bath either coconut oil or even olive oil. Do you have to be very careful with your amount because it can make your water slippery even a half a tablespoon and a bathtub is way too much. That way it gets all of my hair and my skin. You really only need the tiniest amount. So I can see if you overdid it it would be problematic. I tried directly over my hair with olive oil and it was a horrible experience that's because I looked up old tutorials about hair before all the newfangle hair and shampoo treatments.
It works for me too!
Right? Im black with 3b curls and i use coconut oil all the as a prepoo and oil after the shower. Works for me 🤷🏾♀️✨
Girl my Indian grandmother used coconut oil her entire life. Made it herself at home. She had soft lush beautiful hair right up until the day she died. My hair lovessss coconut oil. I use the organic cold press and it never fails. What works for some may not work for others. The clients natural hair is beautiful.
I was always under the impression that coconut oil is used to take care of your scalp, not really to improve you hair texture. Hence, I apply it on my scalp and then wash it off.
@Novaturient
You mentioned your "Indian" grand mother for what reason. You could've just said your grandmother.
@@arsa6062 Whatever works for you. Not sure what you mean by "improve your hair texture" but I think healthy hair in general will make any natural texture shine. If a quick coconut oil scalp treatment works for you, stick with it! The idea is to listen to what YOUR hair is telling you. ❤

I got asian hair but i love watching these videos. Its so interesting seeing the process and how the end results look
What's the difference between Asian hair and straight hair?
@@bihko4928 asian hair the individual strands are super thick and pin straight and often very dark as well. If i wanna color my hair i have to go to someone that works with asian hair a lot bc other ppl have absolutely destroyed mine lol. Im not a cosmetologist tho so i could be wrong
I have curly asian hair, my hair is both super thick and super curly
@@bihko4928 there is definitely a difference between European straight hair and Asian/Mestizo straight hair. I couldn’t stop looking at this Mexican guy’s hair when I was riding the bus. It was cut shorted on the sides and around the back (about 2 inches) and longer on the top (about 4 inches). The shorter hair was blended with the longer hair. Anyway, his hair was so bone straight and thick (strands) that it reminded me of porcupine quills . His sideburns stuck out and didn’t lay down against his head and you could see his entire scalp. I think his hairstyle looked awful with his hair type. He looked like he a porcupine sitting on his head. I think hair like his probably looks better long so it can lay down and have some movement. Just my opinion.
@@Orlanzepol123 I wonder was he using gel? My ex husband had Peruvian hair because he was well Peruvian and his hair looked like a porcupine most times but after I saw him on a day of no gel, his hair still stuck straight up but looked more like Don King🤔 Some of these guys try to tame the texture with gel so they don't look like a redwood tree🤔🤣
I always use coconut oil, and my hair loves it. And her hair afterwards is very beautiful.
👏🏾👏🏾 Beautiful woth great Rehydration
Yes Indian girls use coconut oil and their.hairs looks good...but after massage with oil ..wash it with shampoo.
Same here ever since I was a baby.
