Wow I never realised how wonderful this iconic race is until I had to fly over 10000 Kms to run it. I love this race! It makes me reminiscent and home sick. This is what South Africa is about! Passion, dedication, discipline and courage to overcome any obstacle.
Last race i did was on 2018 so i wanted to check a few videos to take me down memory lane. Thank you for this... Im back again this year 2023✌️🤞 LETS GO!!!!!
Well done on a great run! You looked strong and comfortable all the way. Doing my first Comrades in a few weeks from now and watching content like yours is really quite inspiring and encouraging. Thanks a mill :)
My pen pal just shared his big race will be Comrades next June. I never knew about the event but his mentioning brought me to find out about it and ended up watching this channel. Wonderful moment, beautiful views, lively spirit. Awesome!! Love seeing the interaction you made along the race with those lovely people. Thanks for sharing the event James.
It is a magical event and I am lucky I was able to experience it and share it with so many people. So glad to hear that you enjoyed watching, and I wish your friend the very best of luck in his race in a few months!!
Great running and you looked pretty comfortable all the way! I was 13 minutes behind you and needed help up those steps after the finish! Many congrats anyway.🎉
Thanks for an amazing video. You really captured the spirit of Comrades. It was lovely to see you smiling the whole way and soaking in the amazing atmosphere. The camera doesn’t capture just how steep those hills are on the “down” run😂
Congratulations on your amazing achievement! The last part of this video was so heartbreaking. A friend of mine qualified and trained for this Comrades, only to finish in 12 hours and 3 minutes. So no medal for her...after months of training and the travel. She also took time off work for the Monday to recover.
Wow, your friend is still a winner in my eyes - to come all that way and miss the cut-off by only 3 minutes is devastating! I hope they’re still proud of completing the distance, and who knows, there’s always next year…
They're SunGod Renegades - I find them light, easy to clean, and they stay put. Because they don't wrap around at all, they do let in some light and wind at the sides, but it doesn't bother me too much. They're the only pair I use for all paces, but I don't do a lot of faster-paced running so can't recommend them specifically for that purpose.
@@runjamesrun thanks, yeah I did but not to far, I did 8:04 like you I was also hoping for a silver but by the time I reached Drummond, i I knew it was over 😅 but I enjoyed the race
Hi @RunJamesRun congrats! Fantastic result. Please give the details of your camera gear - the camera itself plus the gimble and any accessories you used. How many batteries, etc? Thank you.
What you thought is Umlaas Rd, is not quite actually there yet. Also a bit early on Botha's-Kearsney is the down side of Botha's and is where the downrun actually starts. Your 'Kloof' was Winston Park. Toughest half marathon you will ever run in the 1st 21km, apart from the Up-run! From Durban to Pinetown you gain 600m of altitude. Hope you enjoyed it. Nice time!
Thanks Stuart - it was hard to piece together exactly where I was at times, so I appreciate the correction. I enjoyed it a lot - a very different challenge to the up run, both of them super challenging in their own way!
Good luck James if you are running this year and to other fellow comrades. Really looking forward to another vlog if you are. Awesome stuff :) #Thisisit
@@runjamesrun im a long distance runner and my normal avg pace is like 6:30 per km. it means i can do very well with comrade. Registered for this years comrade down run.
@@runjamesrun you look absolutely capable of a silver. I'm hoping to finally make the starting line after years of injuries or illness. Maybe I'll see you there. Also, great vlog. Really enjoyed watching it.
Why did you cut out the Afrikaans section of the anthem?? It was blaringly obvious what you did there!! What an absolute slap in the face of so many people that are still making this country run and has made such a missive contribution to building this country! Are you doing a bit of a race bating there???
Hey, I meant no disrespect to anyone - my intention was just to include the beginning and the end of it to give a taste of the whole 10+ minute opening proceedings. I’m really sorry if the editing caused offense but that was absolutely not my intention.
I'm an Afrikaans speaker, and I did not see anything wrong with the editing. Nor did I take offense to anything. Just an angry person trying to find an issue where none exists. Thanks for the video. Great editing. 👍
@@silencedogood7856 So, the complete anthem was played, from start to finish, right? Yet, I listened again, and I couldn't get to the Afrikaans bit of the anthem??? Epic songs 🎵 at the start line !
Yes - goosebumps every time!
Thank you so much for publishing this. I was there for the first time, and seeing the start again brought tears to the eyes!
One of the few races where the start is as emotional as the finish! I get goosebumps every time.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video, James. Congrats on a great run.
That means a lot coming from you! I found your website super helpful in preparing for the down run - thanks very much.
Just an outstanding job. To get any medal at Comrades is tough, especially the Bill Rowan medal and you made it look easy. Congratulations!

Awesome James well done, I was also there a couple of hours behind you 😅
Oh wow, it's so good to have this memory unlike us in the '90s as there were no Gopro's, so wish there were. Congrats on finishing at a great time.
