As a native Czech I can asure you, that your pronunciation of Podlažice and Sedlec, was correct. The only problem was with the pronunciation of the ''ř ''sound in Břevnov.

What an enticing mystery! Now I'll have to learn more about the Devil's Bible.
I thought the mix of topics in it was very interesting. Both scientific, religious, and personal confessions from the author. I can't imagine the book was useful for daily life at the time it was written, but it does provide a reflection of the human experience at that time and place. Back then, there may have been no difference between science and spells...
    Please make that spells video!!!

Just a friendly reminder a bit over exactly 3 years later that you still have 3 to 4 videos to go.
Nice video BTW. (And first for me from those channel.)
I'm pretty sure you know but for the interested person you could have included in the introductory last that all books are codices and the word itself comes from the Latin caudex which means "block of wood", "trunk of a tree" or "book". Precisely because codex meant a book protected by it's covering made of blocks of wood made from a tree trunk to protect the valuable manuscripts whole also helping arrangements in libraries.
The less specific and earlier word for book, liber, cives from "the inner bark of a tree" and also named book. As the inner bark were used as an alternative to papyrus, parchment and especially vellum. And maybe referring to scroll handles as opposed to rolls without a handle but i am unsure. But inner bark usually contains a large proportion of woody, fibrous cells, and is the part from which the fibre of the plant is obtained used for paper making. (Or hemp sacks and other things)

Hiya Maydi, Thanks very much for another great video. I've seen a couple of documentaries about the Codex Gigas and it has always been at the back of my mind that it could have been a commission. This stems primarily from the huge cost of production and the length of time it took. A monastery that could provide the skills to produce it would surely need either to be incredibly wealthy or have a benefactor who's identity would remain anonymous. However, my theory fails badly due to the very lengthy period of production, as presumably the mysterious benefactor would have been at least in their twenties on commissioning the book, probably from a very wealthy/ powerful family, and by the time it was completed I think that they may have expired! This then takes us back to the beginning! It seems to us in the modern world to be a weird thing to do, but the medieval mind was certainly a very different one. Take care, David.

This stuff is demonic and spiritually fatal to your soul. Please stay away from this! Please turn to Jesus. Your soul is at stake. The devil has nothing for you but destruction and death. You might think this is “cool” but you have a Heavenly Father who is 100% against ALL of this.

This is a fascinating presentation, S-S, but perhaps you’ll forgive me for thinking this to be Medieval ‘clickbait’ - & that in no way detracts from your excellent critique of the subject matter at hand - not your clickbait, but more of the period; that the book is appointed as, ‘The Devil’s Bible’ seems disingenuous; as far as I understand it (& I am no Medieval scholar), the ‘Devil’s Bible’ is better known as, ‘The Grande Grimoire’ - & bears little or no resemblance to this liturgical work. If it is indeed a construct of penance, then it is (even in that period) a harsh remonstration - the transgression for which one might assume was (as the book itself), gargantuan - or at least for the era.
I would agree - & consistent with the font, initials, & illustrations, most likely to have been penned by one individual - tho’ I’d consider twenty to thirty years, a conservative estimate ( I guess carbon dating might establish the dateline more accurately, if it’s not already been done). I’d personally add another twenty years to (your given) estimate. That indeed, is a lifetime’s work, & no mean feat.
For myself, I’d make an assertion: given the pecuniary outlay for this tome - it would have been astronomical, & hence the protracted period to construct this behemoth of a book; either that, or the commissioner for this piece was outlandishly wealthy, & put up the moneys with little or no thought to cost - an indulgence, perhaps ? The subsequent sale of this work in the thirteenth century may not have been due to a hardship, rather (& this is a stretch) to make good on an unsettled debt ?
It is interesting that not all the owners of this incredible literary work were necessarily of an ecumenical stature - to me, it would appear this book became part of the spoils of war or conflict - the fascination for which promulgates possessive greed (one of the mortal sins of man).
My final contention would be: This is an incredible piece - poster sized - dramatic, emblematic, & significant only to the religious order, because your ordinary peasant would not be versed in latin, or indeed any matters pertaining to religious orthodoxy - they just followed, as sheep (there’s a modern day parable to Brexit in there somewhere ;D
Thank you for a brilliant insight into this manuscript - stay well & keep safe,
    Best,
    Andrew :)
