- The end titles from the original 90 minute version of the 20th Anniversary Special for Doctor Who. It features a unique version of the theme that mixed a slightly sped up version of the original 60's theme with the album version of the 1980's theme. It was only used in this episode.

William Hartnell would've been so proud that Doctor Who made it to it's 20th anniversary with a special showing 5 incarnations of Doctor Who,his companions & old enemies.
azure rainbow I think he would be, that his replacement did an excellent job.
He hated leaving the role according to one of his stories and was happy to return to the Three Doctors and was sad that he couldn't do much for that
Considering he said it would be a great show and last 5 years - not 20 hahaha!
@@therestorationofdrwho1865 Or even close to 50+ if we include the Wilderness Years.
He saw doctor who today he would be rolling in this grave
Oh for the days when credits were allowed to be over a minute long and wouldn't be squished in half or into a little box while an inane continuity announcer talks about what's on BBC4 in half an hour.
I wish we could return to those days.
Couldn't they do that after the credits instead of showing a few unnecessary trailers for things on another bloody channel
Let's be realistic - most people would just channel flick or check their Facebook messages as soon as the credits began.
Instead of 10 seconds.
I've never heard that now...
@@TallSilentGuy Sometimes I want to know who played a certain character I liked only or identify an actor who looked familiar only to be annoyed that the credits are reduced to an illegible size.
If I had a TARDIS, or any form of time travel, I'd go back to 1982 and convince Tom Baker and Lalla Ward to be in The Five Doctors.
*1983
To be fair, Lalla Ward was never supposed to be in the episode, at least not after they secured Lis Sladen. Tom was meant to be with Sarah Jane, Jon with the Brig, and Pat with one of his companions- since Tom wasn’t interested and none of Two’s could make it for any more of a brief cameo, the companions were reassigned, and Lalla showed up by the sheer luck of having been in the only unfinished Tom episode. (As far as I know, no version of the script ever had Kamelion in it either).
Funnily enough, an April Fool’s prank in the pages of DWM (supposedly JNT’s idea) convinced some fans that the Anniversary Special was going to use footage of a partially-filmed _Hartnell_ story called “The Hidden Planet” mixed with new Davison footage, presented in black-and-white to blend seamlessly with the original, titled “The Phoenix Rises.” While “The Hidden Planet” was a genuine Hartnell-era script (a take on the “world where sexism is reversed” cliché,) it never got to the filming stage, and in any case whole episodes were filmed in a single studio session at the time.
If one could do that, I doubt it'd be easy; Baker and Ward couldn't stand working with one another at the time, and Ward refused to appear in the serial if Baker was present. Baker, meanwhile, was still burnt out from spending seven seasons worth of time playing the Doctor both on and off set, which did noticeable damage to his mental health for a good while. Had Ward been notified that Baker declined appearing, she might've joined the project (along with a handwave to explain her suddenly not being in E-Space anymore), though Baker would've been much harder to convince.
Tom Baker later said he regretted not being in it
@@theadventuresofspectahman9079 that regret did push him into being in the 50th though
At the start of The Five Doctors,it should've said "For William Hartnell." After all,he was the 1st Doctor Who.
I love how every anniversary show will end with every actor who’s played the doctor in the cast billing
Day Of The Doctor’s credits are hilarious with all the names under the same character, every time I watch it I pause to read all the names and chuckle to myself about how this is the only show where that sort of thing would happen

Haven't seen that many doctors in one place since I last went to my GP
My favourite part of The Five Doctors is how 6 people are credited as playing the Doctor.
That's because William Hartnell had been dead for eight years, and Richard Hurndall had to take his place. My dad actually asked me once who was "Doctor 1-A."
1- Hartnell
1A- Hurndall
1B- Bradley
The family of William Hartnell, the 1st Doctor Who,must've been glad that a little bit of the original Doctor Who theme was heard at the end of The Five Doctors.
and why is that?? its just a theme. I think they would be more proud that doctor who has made it this far
”One day,I shall come back. Yes,I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets,no tears,no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.”-The 1st Doctor Who.
God knows we need him: the new stuff feels a little forced now. Not bashing the actors: their performance is stunning, but the story seems to lack a bit.
"Goodbye, Susan. Goodbye, my dear..."
"Doctor Who" isn't his name.
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficialIt really doesn’t.
Tegan: You mean you're deliberately choosing to go on the run from your own people in a rackety old TARDIS?
The Doctor: Why not? After all, that's how it all started!
Nothing symbolizes the classic Doctors better than that.
Like how it transitions from the 60s theme to the 80s theme at 0:36

I just watched The Five Doctors, and man was it amazing. One of if not the best Doctor Who stories ever. So awesome.
This and the 50th were both amazing and made excellent anniversary specials.
@@jerobriggs6861 yes :)
Actually, the first part isn't a slightly sped up version of the original, it was reconstructed by Peter Howell in the Radiophonic Workshop, so that it was in the same key as his version, F# Minor. He did such an amazing job, that most people still think it was the Delia Derbyshire sped up or pitch adjusted.
I don't buy that myself - it's identical.
Huw Thomas it’s the same speed. I can tell.
Yeah- adjusting tempo and pitch separately simply wasn’t possible with the technology of the time. I don’t know whether the BBC had a digital sampler in ‘83, but however he did it it’s clear Howell had access to, and made use of, individual components of the original mix.
@@rassilontdavros3004 Yeah, I could see them keeping the physical copies around for quite a while.
@@rassilontdavros3004 It absolutely was possible to pitch-shift in 1983, using the very same Eventide Harmonizer that processed the Cyberman voices in this serial. Indeed, the Harmonizer was infamously used three years earlier on the closing titles to Part 4 of 1980's Meglos, transposing them into E Minor. Obviously, being an early implementation, the pitch shift wasn't perfect and that can be heard here as a grainy quality in the pitched-up segment of the theme.
The specific mix used here is the "Titles" mix used for the majority of William Hartnell's serials and early Patrick Troughton serials. It's identifiable by the irregular hissing pattern and the thin-sounding main melody. The full-length theme used for record releases has a constant, unchanging hiss pattern, and the pilot version has an overdubbed, glassier main melody. As a final nail in the "reconstruction" coffin, there is a slightly messy crossfade half way through the 1963 portion of this closing theme, used to extend the main theme to match the Howell arrangement. This crossfade would have been unnecessary if assembling the theme from scratch.
Incidentally (and unrelated to this) Peter Howell did have access to the workshop's Fairlight CMI digital sampler and individual theme component tapes from the 1963 version, but these were used in certain incidental music cues for the story, not to recreate the theme for the closing credits. The cues in question are used when the Doctors are first being collected with the time scoop, and later when the fifth Doctor discovers Borusa's secret chamber.
I always loved the use of the Delia theme in Five Doctors.
i like how they combined the music from the different eras of doctor who
William Hartnell would've liked seeing The Five Doctors, the 130th Doctor Who story celebrating 20 years of Doctor Who.
When this originally aired, simulcast to 1/3 of the planet via satellite and I was watching live with millions of others, it reached the end and this played.
I was 11/12 years old and I remember being in tears. It was so magical. I'm just about 48 years old now and I'm in tears again. This was good. Full loop.
Perfect mix of old and new.
It was good seeing The 3rd Doctor's car,Bessie, the yellow roadster in The Five Doctors.
It was good that UNIT,the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, which the Doctor used to work for as its scientific advisor, was seen in The Five Doctors, though for a brief appearance.
So 80’s and still sounds awesome
Tom regrets not being in the five doctors
At the start of The Five Doctors,it could've said on the screen at the start of the story "For William Hartnell" before a clip of 1 of the 1st Doctor's stories was used for the story to celebrate Doctor Who's 20th anniversary.

Dedicated to the memory of William Hartnell
1908-1975
William Hartnell's family must've been happy that the Doctor Who closing theme in The Five Doctors had a mix of the original Doctor Who theme for almost 40 seconds.
One person sought out immortality and won!
William Hartnell's kin must've been glad that a clip of 1 of the 1st Doctor's adventures was used in The Five Doctors as a dedication to him.
Takes me immediately and directly back to single digits. Wonderful wonderful stuff!
The cast of the Five Doctors is basically the history of Doctor Who
Since Tom Baker decided not to appear in this special, footage from the unfinished serial Shada was used to portray the Fourth Doctor.
That's actually really nice. I like that the music here really symbolizes what the special is, combining the old Doctor Who theme with the new [at the time] theme.
this is why Doctor Who is my favorite
I really want to go back in time and convince younger Tom Baker to Really be in this special, though he might've taken some of the spotlight away from Davidson, it would've been amazing actually seeing him with his other incarnations, by the time Dimensions in Time came out he was too old.
To Old 👌🏻

It's a real shame Four never got to meet Two. They would've had so much fun tormenting Three...
Well he had already been there too long and the creators had finally got people attached to the new Tardis crew, and Tom wanted to end people's association of him with Doctor Who so that he could be hired as an actor, which of course didn't happen after a while.
Dawn of Justice Productions It would be like david with matt in the 50th if tom came back. I think it would be awesome.
I'd take 7 years of Tom over 4 any day.
In the 4-part version of The Five Doctors, there are some extra footage that's not seen in the 90 minute version of that 130th Doctor Who story.
No there isn’t. There’s a special edition version, and the original. All the four part version does is stick the worst cliffhanger endings in existence. One of them is when Sarah Jane falls down the slight drop and screams as if she’s dying...
@@tmofee In fairness, they were never meant to be cliffhangers, JNT stated that they should be considered as convenient break endings.
This is better then the original credit ends
A shame that there wasn't more than 1 appearance of UNIT in the 5th Doctor's era.
It could have been worse in Colin Baker's era there was none although there was one planned. Nicholas Courtney was in two Peter Davison stories.

More than once while Doctor Who was in re-runs on PBS,there were some extra scenes in the version of the 20th anniversary episode in it‘s 4-part version, not the 90-minute version. There must be a little more extra scenes of The Five Doctors.
William Hartnell wasn't in the The Five Doctors because The Five Doctors was in the 1980s and Hartnell died in the 1970s. A decade before. So Hurndall took his place due to Hartnell 's death.
That and they showed a clip of Hartnell right before the opening credits, so it still makes sense.
My favourite version of this 🎶
It's a shame William Russell from the first Tardis team wasn't in this. I would have liked to have seen him as one of the ones that made it during The Great Escape movie unlike Steve McQueen who gets caught in Swabia trying to jump the Swiss Border on a motorbike. If Tom Baker and Louise Jamison (Leela) were in the Five Doctors episode it would have been tops. The Robots of Death and Talons of Weng-Chiang, Image of the Fendahl and The Sunmakers made this show competitive with Star Wars. Image of the Fendahl was like 1970s Web of Fear but not as good as the others mentioned.
my favourite version of the music

The middle eight is always good
What happened to John Nathan-Turner,who had been producer of Doctor Who in Tom Baker's & 7th & final year as The Doctor and also in the eras of Peter Davison,Colin Baker & Sylvester McCoy?
Shame Tom Baker didn’t want to return for this episode. This episode’s title would have made more sense if he did.
I wonder if the kin of Roger Delgado, who was the original Master on Doctor Who,has seen The Five Doctors?
It was good that UNIT the Five Doctors, though it was for a cameo appearance.
If William Hartnell's kin have seen The Five Doctors, they must've been very happy seeing it.
Ah the Starfield theme. The best Classic one certainly and maybe the best one overall.
If there is ever a "Thirteen Doctors" episode, the cast should be as follows:
THE DOCTOR
Jodie Whittaker
Peter Capaldi
Matt Smith
David Tennant
Christopher Eccleston
Paul McGann
Sylvester McCoy
David Walliams
Peter Davison
Tom Baker
Sean Pertwee
Reece Shearsmith
David Bradley
@shlstudios5987 no, there's 13 there, not sure why David Walliams is there though
If William Hartnell's family saw The Five Doctors, celebrating Doctor Who's 20th anniversary, they must've cried with joy, though William Hartnell appeared in the prologue which was a clip from 1 of the stories from his era.
If Ian Chesterton and &Barbara Wright were in this adventure, they would be surprised to find out that the Doctor can regenerate whether he would tell them or not that it's limited to 12 times.
I've seen the US VHS version of this so many times that I was expecting it to end with the BBC Video ending.
A great pity the show ended 6 years later. Thanks to the personal vanity of 1 man
Michael Grade?
it wasn't because of one person but instead multiple Michael Grade had already left the BBC before Doctor Who Cancelled but not without causing the show to almost get cancelled and a friend of Michael brought him to lead the BBC and JNT asked the head if Doctor Who could be played on Wednesday like normal but they continued Saturday's which at the time had a popular British show averaging 20M views which meant the only people who watched Doctor Who were fans and they were not bringing in new people which ultimately caused the show to end
When Colin said I am the doctor whether you like it or not he wasn't talking to peri...
Fun fact, Roy Skelton who voiced the dalek also did the voice of Zippy from Rainbow
Wait if they got a replacement for hartnell why couldn't they get a replacement for baker
Because two recasts would have been silly
because Baker is still alive and there is currently NO ONE who can match him. There are two stories regarding his non involvement, one he didnt want to, two he was in another production and could be there. Either way they worked it into the story, him being caught in the time vortex was endangering his life as he was in danger of being pulled into it too.
They don't make doctor who like this anymore I love this story I am 29.
John Nathan-Turner was the 1st to be producer of Doctor Who in the eras of 4 Doctor Whos-Tom Baker,Peter Davison,Colin Baker & Sylvester McCoy.
That's because he was blackmailed into it. He wanted to leave after being forced to fire Colin Baker, but was told by the BBC that they wouldn't bother looking for a replacement and the show would be cancelled.
Actually, the 1963 version of the theme wasn't sped up. Brian Hodgson tried to match it with the key he used. It sounded sped up because of the pitch.
PokeTin wrong guy. Hodgson composed the 7th’s theme I think, Peter Howell composed this one.
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial keff mcculloch was the guy who made the 7th doctor theme
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficialBrian Hodgson assisted in the creation of the 1963 theme as part of his larger work on the show’s sound effects, a role he kept until 1973.
What was the reason John Levene couldn‘t appear in The Five Doctors reprising his role as Benton, who was a corporal, sergeant then RSM of UNIT?
He was unhappy that his character would forget the Second Doctor
Does the DVD have both the four part original from 1983 hence the 1983 BBC Copyright line being the standard DVD restored version and the 90 minute edit from 1995 and did the BBC plan to colourise the Hartnell and Troughton clips for The Five Doctors but was dropped due to the cost at the time
There is no four-part original. The original is 89 minutes.
There is only one 1960s clip in the entire episode, and it was presented as sepia in 1983, and B&W in 1995.
The Five Doctors was the 130th Doctor Who story.
129th*
Doctor Who hits different
Did Richard Hurndall, who portrayed the 1st incarnation of Doctor Who in The Five Doctors, meet Wiliam Hartnell, who had the role of the 1st Doctor Who for 3 years?
I don't think they ever met, but I'm not entirely sure.
They were friends.
If you slow down the original theme to .95x, it sounds more like itself.
The first doctor wasn't William hartnell lol.
+The Restoration of Dr Who Actually, this was after Hartnell died. As it was the 20th anniversary, it was obvious the Beeb needed to put Hartnell's name in there

It was right to start off The Five Doctors by showing a clip from 1 of the Doctor Who stories starring William Hartnell. After all,he was the 1st Doctor Who.
*****
They must have done that.
+Who Productions they also credited tom baker and lalla ward and they were in stock footage
Can you count from 1 to 5?
Pfft, that's easy.
I used to even be able to count to 9, though it's gotten very difficult since 2013.
I actually think this should have been the main 80s theme.
William Hartnell was not in "The Five Doctors" because he passed away in 1975. Richard Hurndall played the 1st Doctor.
Richard himself died a few months later. The BBC never got to pay him.
Archive footage of Hartnell was used in the very beginning of the episode, so he was therefore credited.
(same as in The Day of the Doctor, all the doctors are credited because they appear in archive footage for all of about 4 seconds each)
Was or wasn‘t John Levene, who portrayed Benton on Doctor Who in the eras of Patrick Troughton,Jon Pertwee & Tom Baker, asked to appear in The Five Doctors?
Yes
This is what I recall seeing back in 1983.
Has the end credits been altered in subsequent DVD releases?
I believe so. When the closing credits start on my DVD copy, the Time Vortex from Tom Baker's first intro sequence is shown while the Derbyshire version of the theme plays. The visuals shift to the field of stars once Howell's theme kicks in.
No, but the SE version credits the companions as they were credited during their respective eras, and adds additional credits for roles exclusive to the SE itself.
I want to meet peter davison and Sylvester McCoy
That's not what it sounded like on the video. It sounded more like a mixture of all the themes.
Wonder how they did the pitch change on the Hartnell theme - sounds shit lol.
It was a reconstruction using the original itself as a reference and the same equipment. Peter Howell did an amazing job rebuilding the theme to fit his key.
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial No, I'm talking about the actual original theme, not a recreation. They used Delias theme and matched it to the pitch of Howells that's what I'm wondering about.
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial There is no way they remade Delias theme just to change the pitch. It wouldn't sound exactly the same as it does either.
Who the hell was richard hurndall and which doctor was he
He played the first Doctor for this episode
The cast & production crew of Doctor Who must've had a very big cake for the celebration of the 20th anniversary of that long running science fiction series.
Not in those days, money was tight. Now days they definitely would, and did in The Day of the Doctor.
