Yes, exactly. I have learned a lot here - even for stuff where I thought I knew what I was doing, like brakes. In this one, I learned a better way to soul-dur fine stranded wire. Who would have thought a bad fan relay would lead to a no-start condition?

I question the logic of putting an important relay box so far down in the engine compartment. As this is a Jeep and in all their adverts, it shows the vehicle driving through mud and water. The relay box doesn't even look waterproof. No small wonder that I'm told not to buy a jeep. I'm floored that the whole wiring harness must be purchased. Great job and clever work around to save your customer a lot of money!
Wow, FCA day at SMA! I had the same exact pin rot out on my Caliber and fixed it the same way you did (made replacement relay external), so now I have video proof that I did a "professional" repair, lol.
I’ve never seen anyone do that little alligator clip trick to hold the wires while you solder them, and I was a line tech for a long time. You just added something to my arsenal that will make life easier when I need it
Thank you. I have been going through a rough patch feeling pretty useless. My wifes jeep stopped starting and we most definitely don't have the funds to pour into our cars you recklessly gave me the tools to tackle this on my own. My wife and kids look at me differently now. Please keep teaching and inspiring. IF I CAN DO IT. YOU CAN DO IT. that made all the difference. Thank you
As usual I have to admire your methodology of using logic and circuit diagrams to trace out electrical faults. I've found that most mechanics shy away from electrical since they don't have the temperament for it. I recently got a call from a friend regarding some running lights he had had someone else install on his motorcycle. He had killed his battery because he didn't know that the lights did not shut off with the ignition switch. After removing the fairing, I went into full "Eric O" mode and started by tracing the wiring back from the lights to the power source to the switch assembly. It took all of two minutes to find out that the guy who had done the work, a licensed mechanic, had cross jumpered the relay base effectively omitting the relay from the circuit. I pulled the jumper and the lights quit working altogether. When I flipped the switch, there was no telltale click from the relay so I pulled the relay out and did a quick test to find out if it worked. It didn't but fortunately there is a GM dealership about two blocks from where I was so I walked over there and they had a replacement unit for about $4.00. Popped it in and voila, the lights worked as they should. I had my friend call the wrench who had done the original work and ask why he had jumpered the relay. His response was , "The relay was no good. But relays are just a waste of time and you don't really need them so I jumpered it" So in the end my buddy was happy and now I have half a dozen guys phoning me for electrical problems on their bikes. Problem is no one wants to pay for my time and they think I should fix it over the phone........lol
One of my first videos was on the same problem on a compass! If theyre common enough for me to see them at a Toyota dealer, they must be pretty common! I'd love to know who thought it was a good idea to put a relay box with no protection from the weather in the wheel well lol
This was very impressive how you narrowed down this electrical issue. Plus knowing that there was a repair harness rather than replacing an OEM factory harness saved hundreds of dollars. Having the wiring diagram is a must for issues like this.
Nice repair. Love the good ol garage talk. The womans jeep compass died at 160k. CVT failed. Mr Kilmer says them jeeps are just a junky fiat. I think hes right. Keep em coming Mr. O. 👍
Most definitely I have a 2016 Jeep Patriot Latitude 2.0 L that is a piece of Junk. I have had one electrical problem after another. Replaced the TIPM thinking that would fix all my electrical problems and a year and a half later still having the same mysterious electrical problem and the damn Jeep Dealership can't seem to diagnose it yet!

Mr. O such a busy man always keeps smiling ,people should go back and watch those day in shop video's and see this man never get's 5 minutes to do anything. He is busier than a AT&T switch operator from the 50's Great work Mr.O!
This video saved me on a diag today! Great stuff. For what it's worth, AllData completely ignores this box on a 2016 Jeep Compass. Absolutely ZERO information on it's existence or location. All they give you is a connector view, but with no location or any other info, you're led to believe it's integrated into the TIPM. Even under removal/replacement or parts/labor it just takes you to TIPM. My fault ended up being the ASD relay output, load side. Thanks Eric!
Thank you for showing the boxes with part numbers to the camera!! I was in and out at Napa getting the relay and wiring within a few minutes. (Ref 8:58 mark in video)
Hi Eric, My wife's 2015 Compass just had this problem the other day. I watched your video and it was extremely helpful in locating and fixing the problem. Instead of getting a relay I fixed the one that was it it by cleaning out all the green crustys and drilling out the terminal in the box that had turned to solid green concrete. I soldered a wire to the remaining good part of the leg of the relay and ran it through this hole and soldered to the wire in the harness. Easy fix in the end but your example made it a cinch. Thankyou so much! Your a great guy for sharing yor knowledge and encouraging us DIYers to even attempt it. BTW I also checked my 2008 Compass and it had 3 bad relays which were fixed the same way X3. I pulled up the harness and relocated the box into the engine compartment where it should have been from the factory.
Smashing repair, i think you have made it too reliable now :-D. Heatshrink tubing finishes the job a treat, good to hide my crap soldering lol. I've always liked the square style of SPDT relays, handy for most jobs and easy to get.
Great video. This is exactly what happened to my son's 2011 Compass. Don't think I would have ever figured it out on my own. Thanks so much for the video, so happy I ordered a shirt.
Always a good video, both content and presentation. I own older GMs. I wonder how Chrysler feels knowing 95% of RUclips repair videos are for their products? Haha. Thank you for sharing.
I’ve told you about a million times what a brilliant troubleshooter you are (and I try to eschew exaggerations). 😳 😂😂 Great videos!! Thank you so much. What I can’t figure out is why a critical electrical fixture isn’t weather-proofed. By that I mean protected from water splash (especially in the salt belt)? Just watching these two videos on a 2014 vehicle (only five years old) just look at all the damage done. Chrysler should be ashamed.
This video just helped me so much!!! Fixing my son's compass, first two of his relays were corroded so bad... Doing this exact fix times two! Thank You!
Cool fix. In a pinch I soldered the wire to the pin and drilled out the hole for a starter rely on a caliber once. Owners did not want to spend time or cash on it..... It's still running 3 years later. I like your way better. Cool video.
Where are the videos at dude? I'm a fairly new fan and love watching your show, I'm learning a lot. I'm just a trailer mechanic and I've learned A LOT more about working on cars just from watching you. You are the most informative mechanic on RUclips by far. I know how busy you must be and I respect that. Hope to see more videos.
I really enjoy your videos. I mechaniced on heavy eguip for 40yrs before becoming disabled. I love the field, but as you know time will catch you. Keep the vedios coming. Thank you.
Once again! I am profoundly impressed! I wish I could drive my car to Avoca and break down outside your shop! Wait....no I don't...yes I do...don I don't...yes I DO! See ya soon, Eric with my North Dakota rusty 2006 Chrysler Town and Country!
Compared to mine and probably everyone that complains your repair job is very good. Wish you had your shop here in Oklahoma, we sure need a shop that is interested in repair instead of how many hours they can get working on your car.........
Very helpful video. There is actually an empty socket in the relay box so I moved my mine into the empty socket. I depinned the the terminals that were still serviceable and inserted them into the empty socket and soldered a wire in to replace the bad wire. I was able to find an old relay box at a u-pull junkyard so I was able to even use the actual "daisy-chained" terminals from that. Entire repair was less than $10 including an old relay from the junkyard.
This is a prime example of why youtubers always call to annoy you. You are the best! Great fix for this guy and to save that much time and money by figuring that out is just damned good! I was seeing a trip to the salvage yard in this one till you pulled that out of your hat! Wow!
Did this to a jeep like 3 years ago which was inspired by your first video where you diagnosed this and pulled a box from the junkyard to steel the pins
Great video. Your diagnostic approach is second to none. Keep making those videos. By the way, you need to give Mrs. O a pay raise for all of her hard work.
Just had this exact same issue with the wife’s 16 compass. Watched ur video and found the exact same relay had corroded prongs. Wired it up and we are back and running.
My friend I have been a field Technician on heavy equipment for 18 years, managed 50 + mechanics at one time, I wish I have 3 guys of your caliber at any given time I'd have no concerns starting my own shop
Yet another brilliant work around brought to you by Eric O. - im feeling like if the bottom of that harness block had been potted, it might not have rotted-!!
I see now, you gotta turn off the camera and then you snap off plastic tabs...got it👍 🤣 I always wondered how to remove those properly...classic!!! Again...loved this video...thanks Eric for putting this together for us!!!
I really appreciate the detailed video. Im actually having the exact same issue with my 2011 compass. I didn't realize til I watched your video I replaced the wrong relay. I narrowed it down to my asd relay but I replaced the low speed fan relay. I'll get back at it tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks
Another excellent diagnosis Eric. As far as soldering wires together for repairs, that's the only way to do it IMHO. I did notice your little jig to hold the wires together while you soldered. Great idea... I will have to copy it.
Wish you lived here in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada! If I could remember or see clearly, I may stand a chance..lol but, not so. Thank you for the upload! Trying to find someone who can.
Know your a busy man. I'm a retired flat rater. Love the videos and the fact you take the time to explain your logic. Customers rarely appreciate the artistry even when you explain that you just saved them 500 bucks. Great.....what are powers and grounds?
Love the third-hand alligator clip setup for holding the wires in place for soldering. I've always used a thin piece of hardwood and clothes pins. However, this makes getting to the back side of the joint another step. As commented on another of your electrical issue videos, I always dab the soldered joint with liquid insulation prior to moving the heat shrink tubing in place -- anything to guaranty the green creeping monster is kept away. This might have been useful for the unnecessary relay block wire shortened and terminated. Moisture can still get up that thin opening in the heat shrink tubing. Of course, taking the extra time to do these steps is something I can afford during DIY repairs.
Wish you were closer. My compass is acting up, blew a bearing in my alternator, got it fixed, then my catalytic converter replaced on a recall, then she started throwing battery light, got a new battery, worked for about a week, then battery light came back, daughter drove it to a soccer game, got stranded down the street, she will turn, but dies when you put her in gear, now trying to get her fixed, but haven't had the funds for 6 months. Everyone says just change the ECM, I can do some car repair, but not what you just did.
Awesome! I was near Avoca the other day and the reason I didn't stop in to say Hi was illustrated in this video. Busy is good. Thanks for continuing to take valuable time to make these vids for us.
hi Eric, that was a good video on showing the right way to fix a relay. Most home mechanics ,if they would take the time to watch your videos , i believe they would learn a tremendous amount of knowledge. It's not really about learning how to fix a jeep relay specifically ,but more about how to research and come up with a PLAN on a viable solution to any problem. You a actually a viable teacher figure.thanks for what you do.
So many design flaws lead to failures . Seems like someone at Jeep could have predicted the electrical issues that could occur in a 4 wheel drive with controls in the underside, Great solution and money saved for the customer.
Eric you reminded me with my old 1991 dodge caravan which i cant count the times left me down on the road for this stupid wiring problems in fact i started watching repair videos and found you because of it , oddly enough i sold it and bought another caravan 2017 one same color which i already regretted after seeing Chrysler have the same problems . love your videos and keep up the good work
Great video thanks...it's awesome and clear...I just wished you mentioned the pin numbers transfer from factory to aftermarket relays and also color code wiring transfer. Other than this....great video. Thanks again 😁👍
IMHO you did a wonderful soldering job on those wires. I find using the ready made heat-shrinks with solder ring and glue works fine for me and is easier to handle with my rheumatic hands. Both methods do the important jobs: a secure connection and a protective sealing.
Adding the external relay is the definitive fix. I remember doing that in the late 90's-00s on GM trucks whose f/p relays melted in the relay center after the pump drew too many amps. You could buy the relay center, but why? In this case, FCA is really giving you no choice. I also prefer the bigger relay you used with the common connector. Just makes life easier!
"Just remember, If I can do it, you can do it" Well, not really, BUT, the more I watch, the better I get: thanks much.
A quarter million in tools and test equipment helps too.....
@@pyralux01 Yep, I need to look at getting a test light. I might have one buried somewhere. Also need a diag putter now I'm working on newer cars.

Wish you lived here in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada! If I could remember or see clearly, I may stand a chance..lol but, not so. Thank you for the upload! Trying to find someone who can.
Know your a busy man. I'm a retired flat rater. Love the videos and the fact you take the time
to explain your logic. Customers rarely appreciate the artistry even when you explain that
you just saved them 500 bucks. Great.....what are powers and grounds?
Sounds like our boy Josh is back.
You owe Sheba a ice-cream 😉.
Nice cost effective repair, good professional diagnosis and solution.
Thanks for sharing and best regards from the UK.
I have watched and learned alot from your compass videos. Wish you were a little further upstate so i could have you work on our 16 compass.
Just wanted to say thank you. This was the exact problem I had. All fixed and trouble free thanks to your video
Eric you reminded me with my old 1991 dodge caravan which i cant count the times left me down on the road for this stupid wiring problems in fact i started watching repair videos and found you because of it , oddly enough i sold it and bought another caravan 2017 one same color which i already regretted after seeing Chrysler have the same problems . love your videos and keep up the good work
Great job bud! You're the best in my book!
Great video thanks...it's awesome and clear...I just wished you mentioned the pin numbers transfer from factory to aftermarket relays and also color code wiring transfer. Other than this....great video. Thanks again 😁👍
Its good to have Josh covering your flanks.
Another top quality SMA production.
I miss the lunch time clips and the banter with Mrs O and the hound dog.
IMHO you did a wonderful soldering job on those wires.
I find using the ready made heat-shrinks with solder ring and glue works fine for me and is easier to handle with my rheumatic hands.
Both methods do the important jobs: a secure connection and a protective sealing.
Great video Eric Nice diag and repair
Nicely done again Eric
Thank you for the "third hand" idea
Adding the external relay is the definitive fix. I remember doing that in the late 90's-00s on GM trucks whose f/p relays melted in the relay center after the pump drew too many amps. You could buy the relay center, but why? In this case, FCA is really giving you no choice. I also prefer the bigger relay you used with the common connector. Just makes life easier!
Good job well done it's soooo refreshing seeing a fellow mechanic doing the right thing for the customer and not being a hack👍
