    To all the haters:
    1. He's a really good rythm guitarist. Yes he plays a lot of open E string... so what? That's characteristic of the thrash metal genre as as whole. 95% Of all thrash songs ever writen revolve either around the open E or A string.
    2. Jeff did write a lot of iconic songs but Kerry did a few cool too : Piece By Piece, Expendable Youth, Skeleton Of Society, Temptation, Evil Has No Boundaries...
    3. His soli are random but they fit the songs. Have you ever tried to jam over anything from Reign In Blood? It's fucking hard. The riffs don't make any "theoretical" sense, it's all chromatic and/or diminished scales. You can't play something melodic and beautiful over that mess. In that context his soli work well.
    4. I don't like him as a person, but that doesn't mean I can't recognize his abilities as a musician. You can be an asshole and write good music (also see : Dave Mustaine).

    • @GusFogle
      @GusFogle 9 лет назад +50

      I doubt if Kerry King knows the notes of the diminished scale. I think the word you are looking for there describe his solos is "atonal".

      and what are the intervals of the dimished scale?

    • @GusFogle
      @GusFogle 9 лет назад +43

      *****
      It is one of the easiest scale patterns: it simply alternates "whole step, half step, whole step, half step" all the way up the scale. For example, the F diminished scale would consist of the notes F, G, Ab, Bb, Cb, Db, Ebb, and Fb.
      You can go ahead and quiz me of my music theory big boy, I'm classically trained as a pianist.

    I figured I'd tune one of my hardtails down & maybe look into some Slayer. Aside from lots of open E- which is still awesome-, I noticed something else. After I would watch him play a riff and pause it to try for myself, I realized that some of my favorites are all played roughly in between the 7th to 10th frets, up & down bottom strings & yet sound so different. They really did come up with some great, iconic riffs. Some people say it's so easy and maybe those parts are easy enough to learn but then there's the crazy down-picking, with speed and precision, I love it. I can't do it yet, but I love it.

      Unfortunately that is the majority of fans of the genre (speed freaks, showoffs etc) needless to say, its easy to play fast and sound like shit, what kerry is doing may look easy, but once you slap on that distortion and start trem picking away those strings you soon realise just how tight your technique needs to be to stop all the unwanted noise creeping through the amp. Most people here may be able to play a song or 2 and feel good about themselves, but could they play an entire setlist of this music and not wear themselves out? I would safely say 99% of the comment whores cannot. The other 1% who can keep it to themselves, those who brag about it, are normally liars and wannabes. As for creativity, if they dont like the sound of a particular scale, or style, what in the almighty fuck are they doing watching thrash metal riffing videos for, im sure there are plenty of surf rock and pop riffs floating about on the internet nowadays.

      I agree. I've played guitar for 40 years; started with KISS and still play blues, death metal, and thrash. But, I especially remember hearing Slayer for the first time. I love the strong vocals, primal screams, and strong bass-playing of Tom Araya. The chaos during the tremolo-picked harmonics passages evokes images of a brutal, terrifying hell. The tension in the very unmelodic, atonal melodies. And, the overall dark nature of their music.

    Seasons in the abyss is one of my all time favorite albums. you need to understand where I came from, I hated heavy shit like this, I didn't even like Metallica, I was a Zeppelin, Aerosmith fan. then in 1991 I went to a show in Portland Maine (Clash of the titans) MegaDeath, Anthrax, Alice in Chains and...Slayer. I instantly became a fan. to be honest, Layne Staley made more of an impression on me than anything else ive never seen any like him till this day. that guys voice sent chills up my spine. but Slayer is a great live band. they are Hard Rock on Fucken 11. Slayer could have gone the commercially successful route Metallica took, but no way, they decided to stay true to their roots. when I hear slayer, the similarities are there to Hatfield's voice. but the music is the hardest part of what you would hear in Metallica. just balls to the wall.

    Although a few people just HAD TO SAY all of it is just an open e string, I still say slayer is one of, if not, the greatest bands to ever walk the earth.... They are just the epitome of thrash, no question about it. On top of this, without Jeff Hannerman and Kerry King's music we wouldn't have ANY of the bands we have today (a7x, bullet, volbeat, etc)... Too bad it had to evolve into metalcore haha ;)

      I used the words "pretty much" indicating that it was all close enough to the same that the "differences" were negligible. You said "all the same" "exactly the same." While I would tend to agree with your words, I disagree with your attempted characterization of my words, which in fact contained no absolutes in my description.
