Solo Overnight Hiking Mt Field - Mt Avalon - Zeacliff - Mt Hale - Hiking the White Mountains

- This weekends hike brought me to the Zealand Trailhead. The plan was to go over and hike to Mt Field, Mt Avalon, and possibly Mt Tom, across the A-Z Trail and Mt Avalon Trail. Then to backtrack and camp somewhere along the A-Z Trail or the Ethan Pond Trail and head up to Zeacliff via the Zeacliff Trail the next morning. After Zeacliff, then over the Lend-a-Hand Trail to Mt Hale. Down the Hale Brook Trail and back to my car after a road walk.
The whole trip worked out well, besides skipping Mt Tom from lack of water and running low on time. No biggie to me as I considered it optional from the start. The view from Zeacliff was pretty exceptional and glad to have finally seen it 6 years after passing it up on my AT thru hike in 2017 due to illness.
The hike was about 20 miles total with about 6500ft of gain / descent

As much as I love money, I would highly suggest giving yourself at least 48 hours before any purchase decision and asking yourself “Do I really need this?”. I hope more times than not, you find yourself saying “I Definitely do NOT need this”. If you find yourself still in need, shop around and find the best deal for your money.
Please note that I am not recommending any of the gear seen in any of my videos. The gear I use is what I have found works best for me at the time period I am using it. I have come to these gear choices through vast levels of trial, error, and experimenting with gear out on trail.
Gear, clothing, footwear, etc. are not one style works for all. Do as much research as you can, try out things in person if able, and make the best informed purchase decision for YOU. Do not buy gear just because it worked for, was showcased by, or recommended by someone on RUclips
Zeacliff really is an amazing spot. that whole Zealand valley is beautiful. thanks for the video.
It really is, this was a great time
I enjoyed your AT series also this video!
Thank you Chris, as always, for hiking sections of this twice for the camera. Been loving the awesome content this summer!! Take care and be safe. NQU
Thanks! been nice to be out this summer. Except all the rain...and heat... and humidity.... and bugs.... and ...... elevation ... lol
@@ChrisGoesOutdoors 🤣👍🏼
Been enjoying your uploads. Your AT and CT vids are awesome too and I still watch them from
Time to time 👍🏻
I appreciate that!
Thanks for sharing the trip with us. That slimmer, trimmer you seems to have no problems with mileage and steepness of the trail. As always, looking forward to your next vlog, but please just "don't die" we'll really miss the ya. LOL!
haha thanks roger, if I ever do die on trail. Please explain to people I broke rule #1
It looked amazing
Great video. It was great running into you on trail. Thanks for stopping to chat with us!!
Same to you, both times! haha
Chris it was awesome to meet you at the top of zeacliff trail (I was trail running to Guyout), keep up the awesome videos!
Hey Nice bumping into you up there, hope the run went well!
Chris, I love this type of trip. You are exploring the trails and sharing them with us. I have done the hike from Ethan Pond to Zeacliff, it’s no joke. The views were awesome. The flat trail from The Zealand Trail head was courtesy the Zealand Valley Railroad. You could the shelf they carved for the railbed nicely see from Zeacliff. Take care.
I remember seeing the elevation profile for that section on the AT and thinking it would be a lie how flat that railroad section was but oooooo how nice it was haha
Absolutely stunning upload bud, you elaborated this so nicely! Simply enjoyable content! 👏👏
Great views!
Crushed it Chris. Nice work. Looking fit, great vid as always.
Thanks!
I hiked up Avalon from the train station at Crawford Notch 2 years ago on an absolutely perfect mid-October day. Didn't really realize how steep that climb up to the summit was but those views were well worth the effort. I got up there early enough to have the summit all to myself for a little over an hour. Hiked backed down and rewarded myself with lunch, a beer, and gorgeous views from the AMC Highland Center. Great memories. Thanks again for your videos of this absolutely gorgeous part of the world!!!
That sounds amazing! The first time we went up it in the winter we climbed from the same spot after hitting Mt Willard too. We didnt get down until it was dark. I remember the final little trail in the snow was quite difficult to get up to the actual summit but we ended up making it. I think we were only up there maybe like 5 minutes from how brutally cold it was
I was right across the way doing the Jackson-Webster!
As always, very nice ! I gotta get back up there after canoe camping this season, I really miss the Whites ! Cheers
nothing wrong with some canoe camping either, enjoy!
glad you made it back
great spot in the fall also.
Great trip, Chris! I'm heading out locally tomorrow. Will probably hike Mt. Kearsarge via Lincoln Trail.
Glad you are making regular videos again. I always look forward to them as there are few white mountain vloggers. Noticed you have a Durston XMid Pro. How do yoga like it compared to Altapex. Looking forward to more videos from you!
I picked up just the regular xmid 1p, wish it was the pro though haha. Its ok. Going to use it a little more. I actually think I would like the pro better. The DCF shelters have really spoiled me
Glad it wasn’t as humid as last time out
Great video Chris, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Zeacliff's one of the best! Good view of a part of the Pemi wilderness that you don't often get to see from other viewpoints. Also cool that the only manmade structures you can see from that viewpoint are the Mt. Washington tower and the Ethan Pond trail.
Also the tower on Carrigain!
I've missed the views on Mt Carrigain 2.5 times. 1st was in winter and it was snowing at the top, 2nd was rain and fog, and then I walked by it on a multiday trip and was going to go up but it was again fogged in.... One day....
Agreed it was pretty amazing. Felt like a very unique viewpoint!
@@michaelrousseau8851 You have to be trying real hard to see that (or have binoculars)
Chris, what's up? Those are some boulders. What caused all that? Like your channel. Some stunning views
Awesome video! I love your cynical embracing of type 2 fun! I can only imagine the emotions you must have been feeling on Zeacliff, after skipping it on your AT thru!
Had actual chills, was smiling hard. It really was worth the trip back!
Do you ever see the sun and a beautiful blue sky?
Good intro but I force myself to skip it so I can be surprised throughout the video. 😆
Very acceptable Rachel!
Two of my favorite RUclips channels, you are both inspiring.
Chris, best of luck with your "Red-lining" (sp)? I was wondering if you have chosen your final trail yet, so it won't be a " Mt. Hale" type finish 😉.
Rachelle, you are killing it out there this season- hope you are enjoying it as much as you seem to be!!
@@marknadow5860 I havent, I've just been totally winging it. At this route it will probably be something in the Northern Presidential area or wester Presidential area. Or just some random .01 trail in the middle of nowhere that I somehow passed over by accident haha
Rachel-love your videos. I'm going to subscribe to your channel. Chris, I love how you get emotional at the beauty of the Whites. I feel the same.
Hey how do you like the forester, I have been looking into them
So far so good, I've had it since the end of January. I do miss the van and being able to have essentially a mobile sleeping quarters but the forester works for that too, just not as ideal. The real testing will come once snow comes again this winter
So, you did the AT?
I did indeed ruclips.net/video/dOii552othk/видео.html
