  • Spent the long weekend hiking a figure 8 loop around the Pemigewasset Wilderness in New Hampshire. I hit Owl's Head, South Twin, and Galehead Mountains along the way. I hiked over the span of 3 days ending in a total of around 31 miles and about 7200ft of elevation.
    I headed in through the Lincoln Woods Trail, then jumped onto Black Pond Trail and followed the bushwhack from the pond to meet with the Lincoln Brook Trail. I followed the brook trail up to the Owls Head Path and up to Owl's Head. Back tracked back down to the Lincoln Brook Trail and stayed at 13 Falls Tentsite.
    Day 2 I left my tenting stuff at the tentsite and went up the Franconia Brook Trail to the Garfield Ridge Trail (AT) toward Galehead Hut / Frost Trail. Decided to make a trip up to South Twin Mountain up Twin Way (AT) Then back tracked to the Frost Trail to Galehead Mountain and down to Twin Brook Trail back to 13 Falls Tentsite
    Day 3 I left the 13 Falls Tentsite down the Franconia Brook Trail, then hit the Franconia Falls Trail off the Lincoln Woods Trail on my way back to the car. Following the Lincoln Woods Trail the rest of the way back to the Lincoln Woods Trailhead.

    During the pandemic I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding on the trail, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video.If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone.
    If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: ruclips.net/video/dhd7E4rGIwA/видео.html
    Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0

      Do you feel this has improved since the pandemic? I hike up in the Whites as well and have noticed a drop-off in crowds, but I cannot tell if I'm just getting lucky. I have still noticed some trash on the side of trails, mostly wet wipes. Regardless, I do think its getting a little better. Happy trails, Chris! BTW I also have noticed we stop at the same Heav'nly Donuts in Windham off 93 hahaha

    South Twin views = WOW!!! That's a lot of hiking and climbing of the 4K's. Speaking of a salty shirt, my first hike this year was in April and it was so hot that my black shirt turned white in many spots and my hair actually stuck together from all the salty sweat that dried up. Oh oh, I HATE black flies! Very nice video. Thank you! John (OSAT) from MI

      Haha it is a weekend I believe I historically do not venture up. Surprisingly there were a good amount of people at the tentsite but crowd wise even while I was on the summits, AT, and at the Galehead hut area seemed like pretty low crowds. I also shockingly hit almost nothing for traffic on the way home. Very bizarre in all regards for a warm weather, perfect sunny holiday weekend

    Love this video. Watching it on tv before i go to work; looks great on the big screen. It's too bad it's becoming harder to find "zen" in the Whites. I don't do any social media(even FB), and we hike to see majestic beauty and enjoy these surroundings. So many hikers just post to instagram and don't respect nature. When i find trash or dog poop left in plastic bags, my blood pressure rises. Love your "off the beaten path" hikes. Is it bad if i ask instagrammers to find another hobby?

    This was a great journey Chris! Thanks so much for bringing us along. That’s so cool that you were able to keep camp set up at 13 falls without any weirdies messin with your stuff. On the the traffic, ive found that some rando Sundays during the summer and fall months returning from trips tend to be worse than memorial day. Not sure why. Maybe its everyone thinking everyone is out there on the road so people schedule their trips for random weekends.
    Hey i was wondering if you have ever seen anyone ever using a solo stove lite at an amc backcountry site. It would be the ideal woodstove to use at a managed amc site as its the most subtle with little smoke and smell.
    Hey thanks again Chris and looking forward to your next one. Take care. NQU

    I was in that area last mid September wanting to do the Pemi loop but very thick clouds predicted for a few days so just hiked the valley. I saw one of the best looking out houses I had ever seen at the Franconia Brooke tentsite. I was also surprised and pleased it seemed like the summer crowds had left. Interesting weather included last two nights around freezing but for my last day did the Franconia Ridge loop and it was mostly clear. Had been there for the first time late June to celebrate my 60 th birthday and did the Presidentials using the huts since the terrain and weather changes were new to me. Debate coming back for the Pemi

    @ChrisGoesOutdoors Hey Chris, question I have maybe you can answer please. I've camped a number of times in the WMNF both solo and with a group. I'm planning to stay at Thirteen Falls solo and know they've pretty much always have had bear issues. My question is, as you are mostly solo also and having stayed at TF, do you ever carry bear spray when camping solo or feel it's needed at all when camping in such an active bear spot such as TF? Specifically when solo I mean. I'm curious your opinion on the matter as I respect your opinion. Thank you.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  11 месяцев назад +1

      I've had multiple encounters over my 3000 or so miles of trail with black bears. They have never been problematic. I do not carry bear spray at all, and was not concerned at all at this site especially with the bear lockers. Only time I would carry it is in grizzly country. But if you feel better with it you should bring it. Nothing wrong with being prepared
