This intel lineup is a mixed bag imo. We’re are collectively dunking on this new lineup (rightfully so). But let’s take a minute to reconsider what Intel did here. Their main talking point for this lineup was “efficiency” which is great, but the problem is, they cherry picked their data to say it’s rather the same performance or better with previous gens with their efficiency. They tried to market it as a gaming cpu which isn’t the case at all. Most don’t know, but this lineup was most likely a response to the new snapdragon ARM architecture lineup that’s starting to appear in computers. There’s a market dispute between x86 and ARM CPUs now. Which is threatening intels market share. This is why they advertised efficiency more than performance. ARM based CPUs are leagues ahead in efficiency than the 13th-14th gen series. But there’s an Achilles heel with ARM. The architecture is too new and therefor does not support most applications because almost every application out there is x86 based, not ARM based. This is why the new lineup sold out very quickly, it wasn’t bought by gamers, but studio devs and rendering teams. This lineup performs pretty well for rendering/Studio work with all the efficiency. And it’s x86 based so it works with all apps. Basically it’s a no brainer for those kind of people. Intel focused its attention on the efficiency race too much this gen which left AMD with a HUGGEEE lead in raw gaming performance this year.

Compare the 285k to the 9950x, its actual competitor. Also, when doing benchmarks outside of gaming, the 285k and 9800x3D would literally do a body swap. It's like comparing a pickup truck to a sports car and complaining that the pickup truck isn't as fast, though ignoring that it can haul more cargo.
"Compare the 285k to the 9950x" Sure! 9950x is about 10% faster than intel in Cycles renderer in Blender. It also scores better in quite a lot of geekbench benchmarks, which are oriented specifically on production workflow. I think the only categories where intel wins consistently would be 7zip compression where it's better by like 2.5-3% (it absolutely eats rocks when it comes to decompressing tho, lmao), and a few others like premier, where it's again better by about 5% (hilariously enough, Photoshop performance on the other hand is dominated by AMD completely).
