@@angusorvid8840My #1 rule when asked to cowrite or brought in to finish a track with someone. I’ll literally place an object on a chair or table that represents the song. It’s a fun way to set the tone that every choice we make is for the song in its current form. The worst experience may have been a guy who paid me to come in three times and vamp on an E7 chord as he tried writing a story about New Orleans.…word by word. I was ready to call in William Shatner to just do poetry over E7. lol
That was great. Thanks for putting up this kind of content, Bret. And thanks so much to Derek - he is obviously a really nice, creative, talented and articulate guy. Could easily watch and listen to him do this stuff all day. "More Derek", is what I say.
Derek Wells Thanks for sharing your thinking about guitar parts as character roles. I’m playing in a new three-piece and it’s a bit daunting to be on the hook for all the guitar parts and almost all the lead vocals (for the first time). You just clarified and developed my thinking on how to mentally separate those jobs. Makes me feel a whole lot more zen-thanks man, I owe you one!
I always try my luck and ask mates if I can sit in during sessions, just to see other players' workflow. This was a great "fly on the wall" sit-in.. and definitely MORE DEREK!
Inspiring, down to earth, succinct and high caliber all round. Thanks for taking the time to do this guys. Makes me realise I am overplaying the hell out of my tracks!!!
I definitely got the same perspective from this video. Really awesome to see how great tracks are built by subtle layers which add to each other rather than crazy licks and riffs fighting for attention.
Hands down the best video on RUclips for session guitar players. Whenever I come across a track and can’t get the right parts I watch this video and it always resets the way I approach coming up with guitar parts.
Glad you liked it Peter! Got tons of vids with all the Nashville session cats. Derek is awesome, great player, and great at breaking things down too! Thanks for watching!
Whomever thumbed down this video needs to change the batteries in their hearing aids. Derek is the real deal and this video is full of gems and solid studio knowledge from an accomplished artist. Thank you for this.
This video was so darn mesmerizing. I had no idea how much goes into this but appreciated the chance to have an incredibly up-close view of the process with Derek's clear explanations of everything and especially his thinking. Super interesting to go through all of the parts. Tremendous respect for the skill, creativity and artistry involved.
As a songwriter and someone who has had demos done in Nashville and I also create my own "pre-demo" demo at home this was incredibly useful. I love just getting a glimpse at how you go about it - letting us be a fly on the wall. Derek, thank you so much.
No doubt, so many factors can change whether you’re in tune or not. Having good ears is the main thing, but it also makes you crazy because you hear every little mistuning........
I just hit on this out of the blue and was mesmerised by the talented player and what goes into sculpting a record kinda like a Tom Petty song. I had to stick around for the whole thing. Wow!
Such a good video.Watching Derek play the simple parts at such a professional level encourages me with my own simple parts. And definitely lots of ideas for how to approach my little band situation.
This was fantastic! Loved this. Very informative. Mr. Wells you are a very talented professional and I thank you for sharing this insight into what you do. Thanks also to papastache for making this video. The tone of that SG (or Les Paul as it may have been) on the solo was sweet. I loved it! Thanks again.
Beginning guitarists who want to be serious players should watch this. Oldtimers like me should watch it too. Cool stuff. This dude is damned good. He listens to the track very carefully and works to compliment it. You can't overpower banjos and mandolins or acoustic tracks. Very different from the L.A. session scene in the 80s where I knew a lot of top cats. Nashville is about country sensibility.
They are monster players but what's sad is the crap they are having to play on these days is just complete trash. Nashville has always had probably the best players in the world with guys like Roy Nichols, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and of course Brent Mason and a lot of those guys have got to play on some truly classic and timeless records but now session players are relegated to playing on what Tom Petty called "bad rock with a fiddle in it". It seems nowadays studios want more rock players than guys with Tele's and b-benders. True chicken pickin' is hard to find on the radio these days.
EXTRAORDINARY!!! I'm really blown away by your candor and straight up attitude, seriously impressive. I will watch ANYTHING that you have the time and willingness to share. Well done sir. Thank you, Seth

This video is a great example of " Less is more" Do not have to be a super shredder . Well placed tasteful riffs in the right places ! It is also what you leave out ! I really enjoyed this video !
This is a great video. What I really like is the way Wells thinks of each part as a different member of a hypothetical band, a different character, rather than just more “me”.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words, Larry. We’ve all got our things that become our work flow. That’s a concept that has always worked for me. Cheers.

I picked up some great tips and ideas I am heading into my home studio now to try them out as well as try to learn slider guitar again between you and Tim Pierce's channel I get more than I can possibly learn and the best info and tips
Love the focus here on the music, feel, and role of each part in the song. Gear is only a tool to help us accomplish the goal of making a great song. Often as guitar players, we end up thinking of it backwards. I don't think I hear him talk about how many amps he owns, or what brand of cables he uses. Fantastic video here, thank you!
Curious about a couple of things. Derek. First, notice your guitar is tuned down the half step to Eb. What do you like about that situation especially? The ring of certain open strings or fingerings? Second, don't you need to hear the vocal and lyrics to get insight into the gestalt of the tune and where to play the fills? Third, I love your "restraint" punctuated by those strong lines. It's easy to overplay. You know how to separate the parts in the tonal spectrum. I like the way you punctuate the rhythm and structure with slides and the like as well. Really gives the song character. Finally, do you play mandolin or other instruments? Hope not too many questions. Kind of sounds like a Keith Urban style tune. Great informative video and especially playing! And you guys really should get some songwriting credits and points, as the arrangement can make the hit. The guitar playing and tasty creativity are crazy good! You must have come out of the womb playing guitar. What separates the men from the boys...
Jay DeLuca thanks for watching... and for the kind words! Two of the guitars I used for this were in Eb. You’re exactly right, I wanted the open strings for the first part and on the slide. There is a vocal to that track, but for copyright purposes, we had it muted for this video. But I was aware of where it fell (had it marked on my chart) so I was still playing around it ;-) cheers!
@@Derwreck12 Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm sure you transpose on the fly with one hand tied behind your back. I figured the copyright thing was important, but I imagine you do hear the vocal tract when you craft those great lines and fills. One last question? Did you get formal training at all? I started on classical guitar at eleven or twelve for a few years lessons, then educated me ear with James Taylor and rock through fusion and jazz. I never attended Berklee or other music school, but it ain't necessary. But you got the goods in spades.
Watch, listen and learn kids! This is what being a session player is.
Exactly. Number one rule: serve the song. The song is king.
