Hi John! Marugame Castle is one of "Nihon 100 Meijo" or Japan's 100 finest castles. Also one of 12 castles with the original "tenshu" or castle tower. There are only 12 original castle towers still existing in Japan, and Marugame Castle is one of them. So it is pretty cool you filmed it.
So lovely, a castle stay! I am intending to do a Shikoku drive from Osaka next year in October. I also want to attend the Niihama Taiko Matsuri in Ehime. So excited 😊
400 years old... so it was built at the end of Sengoku Jidai (the period of civil war). I never got to see many castles when I lived there. Hopefully when I move back, I'll get to see many of the famous castles and some of the more obscure ones such as this one.
They say that a man's home is his Castle, and given how small the square meter's of the place is, that seems to be true too. This can't be all of the interiors of the castle is it?
Marugame Udon restaurants have nothing to do with the original Marugame udon. Taste is different and people from Marugame dislike them for stealing the name. As far as I know there is no franchise restaurant in Marugame. (Used to have one but closed it down because of lack of customer)
"You can smell it, it does smell like Wharton Hall at Ohio State, like the old 18th-century building...a little musty...." I totally can relate to our dorms on the north campus, like Morton Hall. The floors are wooden, smell old and musty and the dorm is haunted! 👻I bet this castle is haunted and if the walls could speak, oh! the tales they would tell.
You really think so? Compared to where? Tokyo is maybe 3x cheaper than New York. Business hotels start at $30 / night. You can camp almost for free if you have a tent. Manga Cafes are like ¥1200 or $8 a night. Not sure where you’re getting info.

Hotels in Japan are just ridiculously priced
