In Ancient times, Japanese really are into Plum Blossom viewing. It’s only recently that they switch to Cherry Blossom (I believe it’s during the propagation of the White Sakura Yoshino variety in the early 20th century.)
I used to be the person who thought all the blossoms were Cherry blossoms but thanks to you, John, I know about the Ume blossoms now. Spring is on its way! 🌸💮🌷🌼🐝
John, thank you. The atmosphere of the Kairakuen Garden reminds me very much of the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Ironically, it does not have any cherry trees, but is an All Canadian take on the Japanese Garden theme. Particularly beautiful in spring, around May or so, when the apple blossoms emerge. I plan to make the pilgrimage yet again this year. Again, thank you!😊
I didn't learn about Momo (peach) or Ume (plum) blossom seasons in Japan until I visited for Sakura (cherry) blossom season 😅. A resident told me I should visit for the peach blossoms because they are more vibrant and its less crowded during the other seasons.
Massive storms now in NorCal, but we still have daffodils & “cup & saucer” magnolias already. Dark & stormy, yet spring is springing. Love the first signs of spring. (Okay nope, once again I didn’t prune in time, ah well…)
I'm going to Kairakuen on March 30. Do you think I'll be too late for the plum blossoms? 😐 Then, with the Hokuriku Arch Pass, I'll go to Kenrokuen. That'll complete the big three. I went to Korakuen last October. I can't wait!

Two different tree. Ume = Plum blossom; Sakura = Cherry Blossom // there are many kinds of Ume and Sakura trees too! Yes, it is 100% confusing and you have to study it to really appreciate the depth of this nature - or get some drinks and yakisoba and sit under them on a nice day and simply admire the tree and weather 😂 that’s what I usually do.
A lot of people only think of cherry blossoms but forget the plum blossoms come out first and can be very beautiful too.
Me too🌸

Right, the sakura get all the love because they’re everywhere and quite nice, come out with the warmer weather and longer days in March.
Puxwaney Phil predicted an early spring.I like that US and Japan share similar winters since they are both in Northern hemisphere ❤.
Ume and Kawazu Sakura are usually blooming in the same month of Feb. You can enjoy the pretty duo at the same time.
Yes, they’re out too in Tokyo. Seen a few, so nice to see!! Spring fever!
