I didn't realise watching these episodes when they were originally broadcast just what great actors were in the street, Bet and Alec especially, Thanks so so much for these x
It's basically an extremely posh woman (in real life).. attempting to do a common, northern sounding voice.. (the only time she reverts to posh is when she does a crying scene lol).
The 80s were unbeatable, but I forgot just how good the 90s were as well. But this is the month were I realise just how much Curly has aged, he's been on the street for ages! And Ivy is really starting to look a bit rough. Bet and Alec are still the absolute best.
Poor Des, the symbolic unburdening himself of her presence in his life was very sad. He deserved far better than Steph, who was extremely irritating so I'm glad she's gone. Sorry Des ; )
Until her ludicrous 'trout pout' I thought ivy was looking her best around this time. She used to be a right old boiler in the late 70s, early 80s. For a tiny woman, she has a huge attitude on her though.
In all the people i know got married even the one's who lived together not one of the potential brides expected her groom home on the same night as their stag do and be back at their home for the wedding, not one.
Agree,,at 56 10 she said marriage is for life.......can't help but remember 'our' Brian's last weeks in corrie..... utter hypocrisy from Gail the wail.
Ivy was being such a cow over Gail and Martin getting married. She didn’t like that Gail’s surname was gonna be changed from Tilsley to Platt (even tho Brian had been dead for 2 years already). 1:57:17 She was pissed about surnames. And she kept annoying Don over what Gail did with the ring Brain gave her at his wedding. 4:30:08 and here Ivy corrects Nick for calling Martin ‘Dad’ and tells him that he isn’t his dad, Nick just got a new dad in his life and isn’t a big deal if he calls Martin dad, Ivy doesn’t like that Nick called Martin Dad. 4:32:40 She hated that Martin called Nick and Sarah his own kids. 4:35:12 And here she didn’t like that her grandkids were being looked after by other people than her. And then she was trying to convince Don that Martin’s mum was turning her grandkids against her.
The beginning of the final downfall of Ivy. I’m a bit sad actually because I like Ivy as a character even though she does and says things that are stupid. The hatred of Ivy, I think, forgets the pain of her losing her only son in particular. People really struggle to get over that. In that sense, this was quite a real aspect of Ivy and I think lots of people (such as Don) would be far more sympathetic, even on the point of changing the surname. If your only son had died, I think most people would still want your grandkids to have some connection to your late son. It’s totally unrealistic that no one would share Ivy’s point of view. Ivy also knows that Gail cheated on Bryan, he took her back then she suddenly decided she didn’t love him anymore again just before he died. Gail then made money off Bryan’s business and was the Merry Widow almost immediately. Gail also was totally selfish in not letting Bryan be buried with his dad (despite claiming to not love Bryan). I also think Martin is a smarmy prick and I can understand Ivy not liking him.
Bryan Mosley (the actor) had a real life heart attack during that storyline where Audrey had left him.. so the whole thing was shelved - who knows how it might have panned out otherwise! He doesn't return until November '91.
Look at the change in society re this issue. The men are always screamed at, "under the thumb" in the 60s and 70s episodes. But the marriages, relationships last and generally the couple's are at least content. As the 80s rolls on and women are starting to get more freedoms, the men are being ever more emasculated and frustrated. The women with all their freedoms are becoming just as frustrated and more unhappy. I was born in 1982 but even I can see society's shift has made women and men more unhappy and childish.
I agree with Ivy's feelings about the 2 kids not changing their surname. Although if she had mentioned "r Brian" since his death in more than just casual passing here and there it would be more understandable. It's also ludicrous to hear Nick calling Martin "dad" so soon after losing his actual father.
If it wasn't for Bet I would not be watching any further, she stepped in just in the nick of. If the storyline changes and Liz does go through with it then I'm finished. Gail was back in form shouting her nasty little mouth off again but Martin is obviously still tone deaf to those (even louder) bells for whomever they toll and if she splurts out more little water heads, Martin may find out they toll for him, I'm guessing of course. Mike disappeared at the most interesting part of his storyline and hasn't been seen since, pity it looked promising to watch him go through paying the price for his bastardness, but Abortion and the will they marry or not shite seemed to have topped the list. The woman playing Martin's mum was last seen in 1977 (as the bitter vengeance fueled wife of Mike's business friend) who had a run in with the one and only Elsie Tanner for taking her husband away... remember the showdown in Mike's office?
Tbf she is the reason I persevere with some of these dreadfully dull amplified drama-esque storylines.. well hence why I chose her as my profile picture!

Something I’ve noticed…if Betty says yes about something the answer is absolutely no. If Betty can’t believe something, you can bet it’s 100% true. She is always wrong and has an attitude while being completely wrong. It’s really been bothering me for a while. I don’t like her
@MarcoNegrisEye OMG...do you also find it tiresome dealing with people who lack have a sense of humour?? 🤦♀️...they're about as much fun to have a conversation with as a bottle of lemonade on a warm day with all the fizz shaken out!
Watching these episodes again, it's so obvious now that Ivy's religious rantings and fanatical obsession with the Tilsley name and bloodline spelled the end of her marriage to Don, and that Gail and Martin's wedding was the beginning of that end. Don clearly lost every ounce of respect for her, and I don't blame him. But this was the start of everything going wrong for him, too. The bitter man he turned into started here.
