- In today’s video, we’re doing an in-depth tour of BMW’s newest infotainment software, iDrive 8.5! iDrive 8.5 is set to replace iDrive 8 across the BMW lineup, and can be found in all of the following models which were produced in or after July of 2023: X5, X6, X7, iX, i4, XM, 7 Series. iDrive 8.5 introduces a number of different aesthetic and functionality improvements which will be detailed in this video! While iDrive 8.5 is still in its launch phase, iDrive 9 will come in 2024 X1 models.

I bought BMW G05 LCI x40d with system iDrive 8.5 of December 2023 with every single package included.
There isn’t carring car - Relax and Vitalize. I’m sure that this option is on the models before the facelift.
Is that right or am I just not able to find it?
This is definitely more than I want to deal with. I own a 2011 328ix, manual, leather, 53,000 miles, original owner. I love this car, but have been considering a trade up. I'm 80 y.o.. Your video has shown me that maintaining my present vehicle is what I should do. I'm computer literate, to a degree, but certainly do not want to deal with all the new stuff in BMW's present models!! Plus it's mostly that dreadful Sensatec now. Don't care about Harman Kardon or remote start. Just give me the good old basics. And who's going to help when you're stranded because of computer issues?
Fair enough. Sounds like you've got a very nice car on your hands, and I won't try to dissuade you from your decision to hang on to it! That said, one of the beautiful things about all this new tech, is that you can use it as much or as little as you want. If you don't want to take advantage of all that it's capable of, you can just use the basics, which are still relatively simple to work with, and leave the other stuff alone.
I’m with you. I own a 2011 328i xDrive 6 speed manual sport wagon.. single hump! I hate new BMWs, the ultimate tech machine, not the ultimate driving machine. I’m keeping mine as long as I can, then I’ll buy a Porsche.. I’m done with BMW, those screens are so ugly!
If you plugged in a usb media stick in usb a.would an icon appear in the media part next to sirius fm radio etc section?thanks for video
As long as the files are compatible, I believe so, yes.
Hi. Nice job. Finally, someone shows us how to manage the larger space on the main screen - and that the map can be replaced with media or a few other apps. Also, it was good to see how it would look with the default map in place and the media tile on the left side. Fwiw, you forgot to mention the shortcut - next to the driver temp control - that leads to seat and steering wheel ventilation/heating controls. But, again, nice job. I think I’m now looking forward to the OTA upgrade. 😊

Your car will be automatically updated over the air, you don't have to do anything but wait ⏳. When it's ready your car will update.
Shouldn't be far off, my ETA delivery date is 3 weeks and it's listed to come with 8.5 before delivered.

How do we get a split-screen navigation in iDrive 8 or 8.5??? I want the screen split like in previous versions to show “North Always Up” on the right screen and “Heading Up” on the main left screen.
I see that you have a second map in a small box, but that is kinda annoying and not the same. I want the same split screen as previous BMW navigation programs.
Unfortunately split screen does not exist in the traditional sense, as it used to. There are various options involving the customization of the home screen, but no traditional split screen like on older iDrive versions.
Have you had any experience using the you tube and a personal esim on the 2024 x5
Not personally, but it is available as long as you have your eSIM hooked up!
Is this also in the 340i?

I do not believe this feature has made it to the i4 yet.
With 8.5 on X5 2024, how do you get the split screen with media/phone, etc on left stay on? When I turm engine off the left split screen disappears and only see map.
That part of the screen should be permanent as long as you are on the home screen.
Hi thanks for your video 🎉! I got the new 2024 model x5 just a few weeks ago. Not sure why it has id 8 in it. Just wondering any ideas when I can get it updated to 8.5. Do I have to take it back to the dealer to get the upgrade? Thanks
You're welcome! If you have an X5 with ID8 it will get an OTA update to go to 8.5.

Really enjoy your videos on the Idrive systems...could you test if you can play video on a usb flash drive as you could on I drive 7 but not 8...Also does the artwork from the radio or built in Spotify still fill the screen. Thanks again.

Nothing beats physical controls and buttons. 😔 Touchscreens are not for vehicles where someone can be distracted while driving & killed, searching through menus to change a basic function that a button controlled once upon a time. Sad. 🥺💔
Thanks! That's why BMW highly recommends using both shortcuts, and voice control which can control all essential functions while driving (nav, radio, climate, phone etc.)
@@bmwofmorristown9038I don’t want to have to talk to the stupid car just to do basic functions. Drove a loaner with idrive 8.5 and it was just garbage. Drove it for a week, still hated it. Not being able to switch driving modes is ridiculous.

Does anyone know how to turn BC off once youve scrolled through the relevant fuel menus. In previous beemers ive had i think it went away on it's own but in my new car (3 series m340d) once ive pressed the BC button it overrides maps and just sits there. the only way ive found to kill the thing is to press the 3 lines on the right hand side cluster and then go up one to the black scroll wheel and scroll down to maps - seems a lot of faff though - any help appreciated
As far as I am aware, the method you've noted to dismiss that menu is the only one.

hey buddy do you know if there is a way to customise the way the tiles look, i have seen video clips where they smaller than just boxes.
The tiles in the menu/apps screen? They can be moved around, but not customized in any way beyond that.

How do you access the video AR in x5?
You have to navigate to it in the gauge cluster menu. Press the steering wheel button on the left with three dots and three lines on it to access that menu.
I downloaded the update last night and since then my engine light stays on, bottom right in yellow, when the engine is running and then goes away when the engine is turned off. My car app states All is Good and there is no notifications or warnings? The car is an X5 LCI delivered in Aug
Unfortunately there aren't any fixes available that I can offer for that. I would recommend seeing your service center if you have a check engine light on.
Has anyone found a way yet to customize the action tile layouts? Would love to have weather and media but can’t figure out how to change them or if it is possible.
Besides the preset options that are available, I do not believe that is currently possible. However, I wouldn't be surprised if that was something made available in a future update.
Plus you can always say Hello BMW, and then ask it to open the weather app, etc. too ✌🏼
I have purchased the X1 2023. It has the idrive8 for now. Will there be an OTA update to idrive 8.5 ?
The most recent X1s have iDrive 9. So if it is going to update to anything, I'd imagine it will be that.

No, Different hardware on ID 8.5. BMW will not push an update. Will be included in LCI M3

X1 will be getting iDrive 9 for it's next operating system. It will start coming in 2024 models.

With 8.5 on X5 2024, how do you program seat/steering wheel heating?
Tap on the small seat/steering wheel picture on the screen next to where it displays the climate temperature.
How do I make seat/wheel heating automatic so that turns on based on my setting? Previous X5 had auto setting based on ambient temperature.@@bmwofmorristown9038

I've never had that issue, and we've delivered hundreds of these ID8.5 cars by now. Have you tried a 70 second reset?

Depends on the needs of the OS. They're just sent as needed.
Could you help me out. I have a brand new 2024 x6 x40i and i am having trouble updating my idrive software from 8.0 to 8.5. Could you help me out by sending me an update file of 8.5 if possible that i could use a usb to update my infotainment. I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks
I cannot send that for you unfortunately. I would contact your local dealer to see if they can do the update in the shop.
Google maps on centre and drivers screens . . .Does anyone know part 2 . . . in my car I have the maps that came with the M340d, Apple maps and Google maps. with the first 2 (bmw and apple) I can see the mapping on both the centre console and also the drivers screen but try as i might I cant do this with Google. It operates fine on the big screen but there is no map or route guidance on the drivers screen. So . . .my ask is whether anyone knows how to have Google maps on both screens
Nope, what you're experiencing is the intended operation. Apple and iDrive maps will show in gauge cluster screen, but not google maps or Waze.

Minor but it’s crazy to remove functionality in an update. Heated steering wheel had 3 levels before the 8.5 update and now it’s either off or on.
They probably did that because they discovered a hardware limitation that they were worried might've caused an issue.

No, not right away at least. I assume the 3er will get it eventually, but not with an RSU like X5 and others will.
Will the current X1’s be able to upgrade? I know they not on your list, but for South Africa it’s so hard to get this info.

Or does it skip ID8.5 and will be abel to upgrade to ID9, or am I stuck on ID8 for the lifespan of my car? I do have the version with the Augmented reailty package.
From what I understand X1's built with ID8 will stick with ID8, not update to 8.5 or 9. It may be different in different markets, and that info is not from BMW directly, so I don't like saying it with confidence. But that is my understanding thus far. Hope that helps!
@@bmwofmorristown9038 Damn! That’s sad…so buy a beautiful digital system marketed as being OTA updatable and then you end up stuck with the original OS for the life of the car. How did they emss that up so bad? They no joke for a company, they huge. Having a system that can be upgraded but actively now won’t becasue they pivot on something is so dissapointing!
Can you explain why not every car with iDrive 8 will be getting this update?
8.5 runs only with the new hardware (MGU22).
It's a hardware thing I believe. Only certain cars were produced with new enough hardware to complete the upgrade.
@@bmwofmorristown9038 Which is absolutely insane. A $75k m440i drive gets stuck on i8 but x1 gets a roll out to8.5, actually the x1 is getting 9 as well.

It does have AM, just wasn't shown there. It's in the infotainment menu.
If you have any idea when the 2025s will roll out next year, please let me know. Last year, the order bank for the 2024s opened up early. Have a 2024 on order, but Im willing to wait till early to mid 2024 for the 2025. X7, by the way.....
2024 opened early because it was the LCI. 2025's will come along late summer/fall of 2024
They aren’t putting this on the current iD8 models like the 2024 3-series. Kind of sucks.
8.5 completely shredded my cars Bluetooth.... Have to reboot systém several times a day to be able to use apple carplay
Can you define shredded? I'm not be sarcastic. I had a really bad bluetooth cell phone issues with a 330
We've heard of some issues with CarPlay specifically and ID 8.5. I've had success rebooting both ID and iPhone then reconnecting. We're told to expect an update soon to fix this though.

@@craighermle7727 it's like before i walked to car and it opened up immediatly within the close range which is 6m, now I sometimes stand next to the car for 10s before it opens.. Most funny when it's raining.
Then I start the car and carplay is on right away, turn the car off, start it again and it say Bluetooth failed. Only solution is system reboot which on it's own wouldn't be that bad if it was once a week but doing it X times per day is not what I expected from a 100k € car.
@xTeWai Imenen though the phone that I was using, an android, should have worked Moto and BMW Bluetooth didn't work well together. The phone/would work for a couple of days, and then the incoming voice would get garbled. I'd have to totally reload the phone and apps. I did that at least 6 times. The problem was somehow Motorola related. I changed to Samsung and never had another problem.
Hey BMW here's an idea.... why don't you use the same os and hardware on all of the damn fleet and then just stub out code depending on what model. BMW has been working on this system for over 15 years, and it's still a work in progress. This isn't rocket science, but BMW is trying to make it seem like it is.
Everything is always a work in progress, otherwise we aren't developing or advancing. They don't put the newest software in everything because certain cars don't have the hardware to acommodate it.

@@bmwofmorristown9038I can understand that for certain features like the Home Screen but putting the quick links or updated climate controls should realistically not be a problem. Apple and Google limit features to older hardware but don’t block all the updates.
And still no way to deactivate the annoying auto start/stop? What's wrong with BMW...
That is very unlikely to come back. I wouldn't be waiting for or expecting it.
ID8.5 isn't much of an improvement. And it's pretty much obsolete already.
When you are actually spending more time configuring it than using it. Reminds me of emacs.
Once you configure it once, you're all set!
Dealership: hey, you AC vents don't open properly.....well we will have to replace the whole $5000 system which controls the vent....sorry....you should have thought before buying the car with ridiculous screens.
I don't like this trend of having a giant screens replacing physical controls at-least for simple functions like HVAC and volume controls. I have not seen any video of any car reviewer where anyone actually appreciated it
Idrive 8 sucks. The speedometer display looklike it was designed by Atari in 1990.

Thought this with the LCI G20 but after seeing the size of the screens in person I now prefer the large tacked on screen over the small "integrated" screens
Loved 8, hate 8.5. It looks awful and went backwards on customization.
Interesting, you're the first person I've heard say they preferred 8 to 8.5. I like both, but I do think that 8.5 is a big improvement.
@@bmwofmorristown9038 the bottom row is an improvement but the rest is a step backwards. Overall appearance, phone connectivity issues, moved the widgets to the left, loss of customization, loss of layout capabilities, the new speed fonts, and more.
The BMW user interface is really terrible compared to MB and Lexus. Big time fail. Climate controls should have a dedicated space or better real controls.
They do have a dedicated space. Climate menu and temperature adjustment are static on the screen. Set it to auto, adjust temp as needed, and enjoy.
MB might have the worst UX of all time. IMHO
idrive 8 is utter garbage and dangerous and always will be, bmw need to bring back buttons for basic functions. Other manufacturers are going back, bmw should too.
I haven’t heard of any manufacturers going back to physical buttons? I agree that the lack of buttons is definitely a step back, but let’s not act like bmw alone is removing buttons
But you can talk to the car and access most functions.
I though I would miss the buttons but have got used to the new system.

It is just absolute garbage. Simple functions require you to go through a bunch of menus or talk to the stupid car, that can’t understand you half the time. The only logic behind all this, is to cut costs on production. Don’t have to manufacture buttons and more tech that needs to be fixed at bmw, sounds like a scam to me.

Yes, the update will be available for your iX. When it becomes available you will be notified.
