You might check out his compositions in Z-Machines and the related album. He's a mad genius. It's written for machines that are hooked up to guitars/drums/etc. Really crazy good...all for a Zima commercial 🤣🤣 ruclips.net/video/VkUq4sO4LQM/видео.htmlsi=O6bRWldJ_piXl_wT
I remember having the pleasure of sharing a vehicle with bass extraordinaire Gary Willis. He let me hear the first Triphasic album before it was released. I remarked that some of it had a "Squarepusher" vibe. He grinned from ear to ear and said, "That's awesome! I love Squarepusher, that guy's amazing." This is like Miles Davis saying I dig your horn playing. Tom is an absolute monster!
@Michael Vultoo Just a Souvenir is solo Tom but in the liner notes he describes his vision of a full band playing this kind of music. The first proper Shoebaleader One album with the full band was d'Demonstrator, which honestly doesn't sound like something Tom could have done solo, but prepped for the band tour and live album release "Elektrac," complete with art that clearly inspired certain costume designs on Squid Game ;)
Wow. Two in credible musicians here. In certain sections Squarepusher has made the bass sound like percussion instrument and Alex has made the drums sound melodic. Both working in perfect synch with one another
Dan Lo Fat The story I heard was he got into electronic music because it was really hard for him to find human musicians that could keep up with him and create the kind of music he wanted to make. Pretty amazing
yeah, hes pretty much perfected double thumping, its nuts. I've never ever seen or heard anyone that does double thumping as cleanly as him and the way it defines his sound is awesome, you can instantly listen to any bass playing and know its him on bass because of the way he plays. If you know how to play any of his tracks you can go and play them normally and then play them without thumping and it doesn't sound the same at all
yeah he really is, and is someone who (in my experience) often gets overlooked when people talk about the best bass players.. probably doesn't help being in a more nich or obscure genre that isn't really associated with great musicianship (as opposed to, say, jazz, or prog, or something)
Squarepusher is a titan among gods. A god among men. A man among mice. A mouse among amoeba. Dude pushes the envelope of electronic music for decades as a producer and then in like some kind of weird midlife crisis, he decides to reveal that he’s a world class bass player and starts touring with a live band and absolutely shredding.
@@reunionproductions yeah I don't think it was any secret, stuff like the Swifty and Squarepusher Theme was pretty obvious the guy knew his way around a bass guitar
Talking about his band, someone pointed out to me that although the real names of his 4 bandmates on their first album aren't known...there's only 4 names in the "special thanks to" list!
Amazing stuff. Britain really does produce some talent. I'm also loving other various UK electronica based acts like Autechre, Four Tet, Burial, Unkle, Leftfield, Massive Attack, Forest Swords, Allflaws
me either, it had been YEARS. And I only just heard about Shobaleader One, which is awesome especially if you like this (i.e. live drums). Elektric or Elektra or whatever (i.e. Shobaleader One's most recent album) is much better than their first album, and has live versions of a few of Squarepusher's all-time best songs (Swifty, Squarepusher Theme, Iambic 5 Poetry, Don't Go Plastic) which are pretty fantastic, esp for classic SP fans
Crazy seeing another furry here. And same, I love his playing! Was so crazy to find out he also played bass, and a six-string too! I myself started playing six-string about two years ago and I loved seeing his usage of it in his music and everything. Pretty solid technique! You gotta be positive and you'll get there!
This earlier SQUAREPUSHER style is 1 of my favorite things to attempt at beatboxing... obviously i'm a bit limited with only 1 set of lungs, vocal chords & mouth, but it's still fun & comes through sounding decent
Yeah seriously... you remember hearing this on HARD NORMAL DADDY & Burningn'n Tree & Feed Me Weird Things & big Loada & everything else from around those years & like you said, he still kicks major ass!
Been a Squarepusher fan since the 90’s... but I am LEGIT impressed by his bass playing. Most pushbutton IDM/electronic musicians aren’t the best musicians and rely on sequencing/DAW/Ableton Live to get impressive layering... but this guy here is a pro.
He sounds exactly like Frank Lampard, almost uncanny. Great music as well obviously, Feed me Weird Things is timeless. The first time I listened I was sure it was a session bassist or samples from a fusion record, always loved that he showed off his chops in an unconventional setting
Anybody know if this track ever came out? It's a bit Phish sounding to my ears, but still funky, and a properly recorded version would be nice to hear. Nothing on his solo bass album seemed this funky.
I actually like more the way this drummee plays the breaks. Jojo's playing while being technically flawless somehow doesn't flow seamless when he's playing these tempos.
If you’re referring to technique and overall playing he totally could. If you mean writing something that makes you feel this particular way, that’s completely subjective.
His bass playing kind of reminds me of Colin Hodgkinson, the legendary bassist from Back Door in the 70's. In fact this tune reminds me a lot of Back Door.
wow good call, longtime Crimson fan and have even listened to some of Bill's solo/side stuff, but had never heard that one til I read your comment- great song, and a definite similarity!
It would be the other way around. Zach Hill directly mentions Squarepusher, Animal Collective, etc. inspiring his solo albums (which were produced by Andy) in written interviews.
Say what you will, this technically IS drum & bass.
PikaSka This comment made me laugh for a minute straight. 10/10
I really hope Photek read that and considered doing Modus Operandi 2
....with Squarepusha !!
It is jungle in every way.
Yes it reminds me of EZ rollers,, their old jazzy stuff!!
why does noone talk about this guy as one of the best bass players? weird. clearly very good, even though its technical its still sounds nice
Flea from the Chili Peppers talks about him. He actually considers him one of the best in the whole world.
Because we need more vids like this one

A classic Bill Bailey and Steve Merchant duo if I ever saw one - Groovy boys!

Its a silly argument, most of the electronic music guys I’ve met play at least keys and often drums as well.

that dynamic control between the pair of them is just something else omg

Andrew Suzuki, no his tunings are standard 6-string bass tunings:
B - E - A - D - G - C
No, it is not. It's tinged like a guitar, only an octave lower. True
a guitar is tuned EADGBE, six string bass CAN be tuned like that but the STANDARD for six string bass is BEADGC
Yep, that's the standard for 6 string basses but Mike from Zoot (who made his bass) said Tom wanted it tuned like a guitar EADGBE.
