I remember back in the 90's, trying to introduce Squarepusher to people in my town and they all thought I was crazy. "how do you listen to this noise" would be a common response. I always saw it as genius, captivating, art that couldn't be duplicated. I often wonder if both Squarepusher and Aphex Twin have mild or major cases of Autism? Whatever the case, it wasn't long after that both of them blew up and people started giving it a chance. My favorite of the two was always Squarepusher, as I thought he had a perfect blend of electronic and acoustic - along with his incredible bass playing. I couldn't get enough of his Jazz influenced sounds.
Same here, most of my friends from high school exclusively listened to hard rock, heavy metal and a bit of blend dance music. When I occasionally put on my kind of sound (Squarepusher, Autechre, BoC , Aphex Twin, Plaid , Wagon Christ and so forth) they simply labeled it as “music for loonies “ . Didn’t bother me as I always knew these talented people made crazy good music and I still listen to all this stuff as often as I can .. ;-}
In 2019, there's no doubt Squarepusher and other electronic innovators won't be remembered in the next century. He's like the Satie to Aphex Twin's Debussy.
I like the Satie-Debussy comparison. They're both pals and Richard is obviously more popular, but I still believe that both will withstand the test of time as their contributions are too significant. The mythology of Aphex Twin has just been much more effective (it's funny that he used to say he doesn't care about identity, but boy he's the genius of that). What also helps is lots of popular artists mentioning Aphex Twin every once in a while in order to come across as edgy.
6:20 that track is on one of his albums that came out way past this interview. *edit I think it’s the track ‘Metting Excuske v1.2’ of the Go Plastic album. *edit2 hmm good be ‘Curve 1’ of Music is rotted one note too I guess.
Does anybody know what record he is referring to when he talks about a thing called “songs for the children”? Just before he plays the noise track he made..
@@BXLrules he's only jealous because the guy is talented AND humble. Knowing how to convey your genius in a relatable and beautiful way is a fantastic thing. The man is a gleaming soul, his connection to rhythm is ultimate
Every legendary electronic music interview has Dutch subtitles
Lolololol
VPRO interviewed them I think.
In the 70’s 80’s 90’s there were many many great music journalists from the Netherlands .

Aphex has said he thinks he's mildly autistic. But then he is a massive liar!
Bro, once I had put on Chiastic Slide and the people I was riding with thought it was something wrong with the car…

You will be remembered for 111000 years time
you will not be forgotten
definitely not
6:54 "Because, at the end of the day; all that matters that i've done, is the sound that you hear: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
8:31 Tom thought he could just let that fart out unnoticed.
And yet some musicians let out entire albums that are farts, hoping nobody will notice...
@@point-xn4tu and some get away with entire discographies!
hahaha
LOL

he's simply a lowkey genius, maybe not even lowkey. such an intelligent guy
Maybe he's simply a highkey genie ?
@@ratchetboo haha yoy know what? He's probably an all-key genius. Haha 😝

Thanks for digging this out! You're a god.
He is very unique and amazing! 🙌🏽
Still 100 years ahead of his time.
A thin line separated genius from madness....
4:41 Me hearing squarepusher for the first time
He's wearing an Anthrax T :)
Good man. Wonderful to see an interview with someone like this.
Love You!! , Bass Jesus ::: ))))
That tape manipulation track sounds suspiciously like Steinvord
Truly a pity neither him nor Richard did that bjork album back then.
What album?
That would have been an epic collaboration. I still have hope...but its a very remote possibility
Such a legend.
I will never forget you, Dude.
4:30 he's so cute
Thank you uploader.
Squarepusher……transcending facts since time began
Awesome. I always loved watching the interviews from this space.
His bass playing is like punk and slap jazz. Shit is very unique.
I wish they showed more of the SH-101 track at 4:29 it's so sick
he really mastered that “drum kit falling down the stairs” sound
haven't seen this one before. interesting stuff, thank you for sharing.

The Hardware hacker big boss!
Sound of the Turfu.
BINGO!
This is my chance to make the big time,I better not mess this up
He is the alexander the great of electronic music.
Ahh the times when Dutch television was still broadcasting artists and musicians that actually had talent and creativity :)
inspiring.
He melts my brain
Peak Tom
Anthrax shirt lol - bro got taste in metal
It would be so cool to make a why we bleep with him ! What are you waiting for ! ^^'
Squarepusher is much more honest when telling how his music is made... AFX Twin almost hides everything concerning how his music is made
A really great little interview, thanks :)
Well, its time!

anthrax t shirt ❤
was that piece shown at 4:30 ever released?
Not like that, but is has bits of blueprint for Fat Controller [G7000] mix on Vic Acid E.P.
At least
What is that track at 7:00? Really into that one
Chin Happy from his album Hard Normal Daddy
4:02 any idea what “machine randomness” is making the the noise on the tape he is playing?
He don't half look like Thijs Van Leer on stage
bant
what is the footage at 8:39? what a jam!
2:30
My GOD, what track is he playing at 8:35?
Coopers World
Germans want to replicate. Always have.
Does anybody know what record he is referring to when he talks about a thing called “songs for the children”? Just before he plays the noise track he made..
karlheinz stockhausen, specifically Gesang der Jünglinge
joe schmo ah thanks! I only heard a few pieces by him, didn’t know that one. Need to go listen to it right now.
This record is not that great to me. I like more his first album and others songs but he is undoubtly a beast of music and hardwork man. I like him.
The guitar is too low geez
6:11
1:29 Song name?
Nux Vomica
Was he using computers in ‘98 after all?
Maybe for organizing/editing his tracks but not for sound generation/processing?
I might be wrong but SP definitely had a ThinkPad in the late '90s and used software stuff around the turn of the millennium.
What's the first track?
E8 Boogie from hard normal daddy
Rush made a song that encapsulates what he said about how his music is made & what it's made with. It's called The Spirit of Radio.
breh who else thought dude was drooling in the thumbnail
This guy is too pushy for me
He sounds stoned
Yes, he is.
