The thing that stands out most about S1 to me is the comedic tone. They really tried to balance the comedy, drama, and violence where as later seasons tone the comedy down significantly. It was almost like they wanted to ease people into this role when everyone knew Cranston from Malcolm in the Middle.
Breaking Bad is my favorite show along with The Sopranos and Better Call Saul. Each season gets better than the last because of how things are setup each season.
Completely agree with you about this season ending so abruptly due to the writer's strike. I've always thought that S2E2, "Grilled," feels like the real finale to Season 1, and is the episode where the show officially became a great series.
That’s actually about right - Season 1 was supposed to be 9 episodes but got cut short due to the 2007-08 writers strike. So if the end of Season 1 feels a bit abrupt and incomplete thats cos it is.
Breaking bad is probably the best series of tv I’ve watched. Season 1 starts off relatively slow compared to the rest but my god are the final few seasons next level. And season 1 is still great I didn’t actually start watching it until it had completely finished and binged it in like 2 weeks and probably watched it about 5 times in full since. Somehow I didn’t get anything spoiled before hand

Thank you for all of these season reviews. It's uncanny how many of the things you point out (inconsistencies, etc.) are the things that I have the same problem with. And you're pointing out some other things I haven't noticed. Basically I haven't heard you say anything that I don't agree with.
here's my personal ranking of the season 1 episodes 7 - Gray Matter decent episode, the scenes with gretchen and elliot are kinda interesting but i don't care about much else 6 - A No-Rough-Stuff-Type Deal definitely the least good of the season finales. i like the stuff with walter, jesse, and tuco but i don't care about the subplot 5 - Cancer Man solid family drama episode, but not much that stands out to me as much as others 4 - The Cat's in the Bag.. i don't have much to say, i just love how dark this episode is for being the 2nd episode 3 - Pilot i love the dynamic that walter and jesse have in the pilot episode, and it's just a good introduction in general 2 - Crazy Handful of Nothin' i'm pretty sure this tends to be everyone's favorite season 1 episode. i can see why, it's great. the beginning and ending are definitely my favorite parts 1 - ..and the Bag's in the River i love the tone of this episode. the flashback scenes with walter, the scenes with krazy-8, especially his death is just so effective honestly i wish this season did get a bit more appreciation. i get a little bit sad whenever someone is like ''oh the beginning of the show is not very interesting'' cause i think the first 3 episodes and episode 6 are great..
S1 episodes ranked 7) Grey matter kinda boring but still some great moments 8/10 6) Cancer man kinda gives off an average episode vibe but the ending is my second favorite moment in the season 8.5/10 5) Cats in the bag kinda slow some funny moments fells like the 1st half of a two parter which is a recurring felling for some episodes 9/10 4) pilot if this is low for how good it is you know this is a good show although I'd say there are some with even better moments 9/10 3) A no rough stuff type deal the ending is insane and even though it's the weakest final episode it's still really good 9.5/10 2) And the bags in the river the episode that sold me on the show I thought it couldn't be topped but this show keeps raising the bar of how good TV is scince it is the 2nd half of a two parter it's all the climatic stuff with a chilling end . 10/10 1) crazy handful of nothing walt finally goes full heisingberg tuco has the best villan introduction the best scene in season 1 is here and generally was my favorite episode till one in season 3 that I'll cover later . 10.1/10
I think the pilot season argument makes all the more sense when u consider that they were actually going to kill Jesse if they had gotten more episodes in season 1.
I didn't really notice how they tuned down the grossness until you pointed that out. I knew there was a progressively more likeable vibe about Jesse, but I hadn't pinpointed that. That's why I like watching clever dudes like you!!

To sum my thoughts up in a nutshell, all of breaking bad seasons range from good to GREAT. I was hooked on the first season and couldn’t stop binging. I stayed up until 2 in the morning because of my desire to finish some of the seasons. The season where gus dies.
Love that from the beginning this shows that this is one of the best shows of all time from the first season. Walt is one of the best character's in TV History and Vince, The Writers, And Bryan brings him to life. Crazy Handful Of Nothing is one of the best episodes of the show. Tuco with just a few episodes is one of the show's best villains hope he comes back for Better Call Saul in the last few episodes. Loving Better Call Saul and is a example of a prequel done right. Hope to see in the last few episodes Skylar, Walt Jr, Emilio, Gale.
Wow, what a coincidence! I've been busting my butt most of the day to get a review of Better Call Saul Season One out, which you can check out down below. No sooner had I posted the video on RUclips than I saw THIS video! And yes, I will be covering BB and even El Camino in the coming weeks/months, after I get my BCS reviews out. Breaking Bad is not perfect, but it's still my favorite show of all time (and I love many shows!). BCS is shaping up to be just as good as it, even though nothing will top the original simply because BCS assumes that you've seen THIS show coming in. So what do I think? First, the good about this season: in just under an hour, Vince Gilligan and Co. create this pilot that just hooks you, and effectively shows us his life, albeit from his POV (we learn in S2 that Gretchen and Elliott are actually nice people whom HE left because of his pride and ego). In fact, so much of what he does is out of pride but also because he feels inferior as a man. He can't even get sex on his birthday because his wife is distracted with an auction online, yet it's telling that Heisenberg feels invigorated after killing and cooking meth (it's obviously a Jekyll/Hyde situation). His students disrespect him, Hank (who is honestly one of the worst until he becomes more heroic towards the end) is a macho, bullish, racist guy who openly puts down Walt in front of his own son, who sees Hank as a father (like Chuck, Hank is ultimately responsible for Heisenberg, even though Walt made his own choices). The problem is that once you reach episode four, it suddenly gets quite dull, and there is that obnoxious shoplifting subplot that honestly should've been cut. Even though I knew there was a WGA strike before watching, it definitely shows, and I agree that it should've ended a few episodes into S2, like after Tuco's death. But while I don't HATE Skyler, she is kind of a nag and can be annoying. His son actually is right to call Walt out and tell him to just die if he's giving up and refusing treatment. Marie is borderline useless and constantly annoying and narcissistic (until the last few episodes where she tries to protect the kids from their horrible parents). Definitely a season of TV that is clearly figuring itself out, and doesn't completely pull it off, but the intrigue and the chemistry between Walt and Jesse keep it afloat. Side note: regarding the nudity and sexual content in this show, it's important to understand that the pilot was written with HBO in mind, but AMC not only bought it (obviously), but censored any nudity in the show (she's wearing a bra in the TV format). And perhaps the most egregious instance of nudity isn't in the pilot; it's in a lengthy opening scene in S3, where Jesse and his pals spend the night at a strip club, getting lap dances from nude women (if you watch it on TV, again the nudity is replaced by revealing clothes, but most people watch the uncensored version of the show). Sean did you heard about Animal Kingdom? It’s a smaller crime show. Still running and down to it’s last season. It became my favourite TV show of all time
I just started watching this first time ever (just finished 1st season). I heard about it back when it first came out, everyone said how good it was, but back then I was too busy watching lost to bother with it. This is a great show, really enjoying it, really interesting ideas they are playing around with.
Malcolm in the Middle was the only reason I checked out the pilot. The poster definitely leaned into his Hal side (well, minus the gun). For some reason the popularity really shot up between seasons 4 and 5. Still one of my favorite shows and BCS will be my all time favorite unless they really miss the mark with the ending. Though season 5 of BB is my favorite season of both shows.
To me Breaking Bad is one of the greatest series ever made. How the show created suspense, riveting stories and intriguing characters was incredible. Also, how they made you love/hate/love the characters again and again was fantastic. Of course, the acting was top notch as well. All that being said, I don't think I could ever rewatch it. It's such a suspenseful ride I'm not sure I'd ever want to go over that again.
I disagree with your take on the Marie subplot the point of it is to show how skylar reacts to a member of her family committing a small crime to show that she’s a very by the books follow the rules kind of person..she freaks out about Marie shoplifting so imagine what she’ll think about her husband selling drugs..it does go somewhere..when Ted asks skylar to commit a crime she does it because she has a soft spot for him and it kind of softens the blow for when she figures out that Walter is selling drugs
A word you didn't use in the "Walter White" section is "narcissist." So much of his frustrating behavior can be explained through that lens. Looking at the flashback scene in 313 Full Measure, he pushes around Skyler when they're house hunting and acts cocky and just won't listen to what she says. He might have been mild-mannered for most of his adult life, but he was always selfish and arrogant.
Season 1 is great, and all of your critiques are valid. The supporting cast is way more one-dimensional early on in BB when you compare it to BCS. Hank, Skylar, and Marie (to a lesser extent) become more fleshed out as the show progresses, but in season 1 they feel more like plot devices. Also, season 1’s tone is a bit inconsistent. Sometimes it feels more like a comedy than a drama. BCS and the later seasons of BB are certainly funny, but there are scenes is Season 1 and 2 that feel more like comedy scenes. Granted, this matches the plot of the overall show, since Walt & Jesse begin to experience darker things as the show progresses. It’s just a bit jarring on a rewatch.
Maybe some day if there's a context where it makes sense. Shows are tough. Especially if there isn't something current to cause people to go explore them

I do disagree that season 1's finale feels rushed or incomplete. I think the writer's strike is probably the best thing that ever happened to this show. Some of the ideas that they had planned for a longer season 1 sound like a trainwreck, so the writer's strike let them recalibrate things. But I also agree with you that BB season 2 is the weakest of the bunch -- they really found their footing after that though.
But the writers not being able to go through with bad ideas doesn’t mean it doesn’t end abruptly. I don’t like what they were going to do either. But the season still kind of ends. The end of the previous episode with the deal with tucco or an episode or two into season 2 final like a more satisfying conclusion or compelling cliffhanger. The actual ending just happens
I watched all five seasons of breaking bad when my school shut down during the pandemic. Absolutely loved it! Graduated now, but i loved it so much so that i had to ask myself why i hadn’t watched it before. Unfortunate circumstancss can sometimes lead to something beautiful, because after watching this show i found a passion in the writing process and how characters are developed. And i look up to people like you Sean who voice their opinions on the things that they love and don’t love. It’s the beauty of different experiences!!! Keep it up, proud to be a subscriber for over 2 and a 1/2 years!!

A word you didn't use in the "Walter White" section is "narcissist." So much of his frustrating behavior can be explained through that lens. Looking at the flashback scene in 313 Full Measure, he pushes around Skyler when they're house hunting and acts cocky and just won't listen to what she says. He might have been mild-mannered for most of his adult life, but he was always selfish and arrogant.

I remember laughing out loud when the acid and liquidated body fell through the tub and ceiling in Jesse's house. Comedy done to perfection 🥰
Season 1 is great, and all of your critiques are valid. The supporting cast is way more one-dimensional early on in BB when you compare it to BCS. Hank, Skylar, and Marie (to a lesser extent) become more fleshed out as the show progresses, but in season 1 they feel more like plot devices.
Also, season 1’s tone is a bit inconsistent. Sometimes it feels more like a comedy than a drama. BCS and the later seasons of BB are certainly funny, but there are scenes is Season 1 and 2 that feel more like comedy scenes. Granted, this matches the plot of the overall show, since Walt & Jesse begin to experience darker things as the show progresses. It’s just a bit jarring on a rewatch.
Breaking Bad, The Wire and The Sopranos is the king of great TV series. Fight me.

The abrupt ending is definitely the weakest thing about the first season
I do disagree that season 1's finale feels rushed or incomplete. I think the writer's strike is probably the best thing that ever happened to this show. Some of the ideas that they had planned for a longer season 1 sound like a trainwreck, so the writer's strike let them recalibrate things. But I also agree with you that BB season 2 is the weakest of the bunch -- they really found their footing after that though.
But the writers not being able to go through with bad ideas doesn’t mean it doesn’t end abruptly. I don’t like what they were going to do either. But the season still kind of ends. The end of the previous episode with the deal with tucco or an episode or two into season 2 final like a more satisfying conclusion or compelling cliffhanger. The actual ending just happens
I watched all five seasons of breaking bad when my school shut down during the pandemic. Absolutely loved it! Graduated now, but i loved it so much so that i had to ask myself why i hadn’t watched it before. Unfortunate circumstancss can sometimes lead to something beautiful, because after watching this show i found a passion in the writing process and how characters are developed. And i look up to people like you Sean who voice their opinions on the things that they love and don’t love. It’s the beauty of different experiences!!! Keep it up, proud to be a subscriber for over 2 and a 1/2 years!!
This show actually led me to my major in college as well, Creative Writing. Very grateful for the experience i had with it
