    I've owned both before, and what I will say is simple:
    If you're looking for straight line speed and ultimate grip on imperfect terrain, get the 4wd version!
    If you're looking for more of a challenge on any terrain, even asphalt, get the 2wd version!
    Both are fun in their own ways, you can't go wrong!

    2 wheel drive is certainly more fun and it also teaches you that the throttle isn't an on off switch.
    4 wheel drive has much better braking. 2wd brakes are bad which in turn again makes you (eventually) into a better driver.

    • @charliemaybe

      well i agree on the 2wd is better for learning control, i have a 2wd 2 stroke rc car and it is a blast trying to exit a corner and not spinning out while the clutch engages, but 4wd has much better braking and is easier to drive which can also make it super fun to just send it in and out of corners.

      My $80 2wd monster truck with super soft suspensions drifts so easily it's so much fun. Especially on wet pavement, or even simply cold pavement at sunset or those in the shade. I'm actually going to go against reason and equip hard compound tires on it for the winter for even less grip in the snow and turn a monster truck into a drift car. No 3s lipo required. Just a ton of brushes and a 7.4 lith ion and play it like Gran Turismo.

    4wd is going to perform objectively better and kick butt on most surfaces, but if you want more subjective fun and challenge, 2wd is the way to go IMO. I absolutely love sliding the tail out on a 2wd on loose surfaces, counter steering and modulating throttle to "find grip." When you run a fast clean lap, you really feel like you earned it.

      @Ethan Walker i have a 4x4 stampede and i had my drive shaft out before and its a blast in 2wd. Being that the motor and drive components are in the middle of the chassis on the 4wd model, it handles better than a factory 2wd with the motor behind the rear end. Id imagine the slash 4x4 would handle better than my stampede on the pavement. Also, i packed my rear differential with 20 million weight fluid, so it acts like a heavy limited slip. That helps. 4:22 - 6:38 Was pure gold. I've been pimping 2WD for a long time for exactly the reasons you listed during this span. I don't mind working on my trucks. I know it's part of the hobby. That being said, if I don't have to and can save some money by having to buy less parts, I'm all about it. So it's 2WD for me on bashers for sure. Plus I think 2WD makes you learn to be a better driver developing that trigger finger control vs 4WD which is largely point & shoot.

    • @AMain_Hobbies

      You must not be abusing those trucks then. 2WD slash will get stuck on 5 inches of grass, 4x4 doesn't. You aren't 'pimping' your trucks, you're just dealing with them.

    • @sudsrc8261
      @sudsrc8261 2 года назад

      @@BlueOvals24 I mean to each their own. I still like 2WD. I have 2 rigs that are 4WD. They're nice too. If you're all about 4WD, cool. But the things I stated at the time in a post that's now 2 years ago are still true. There is less in the car. There are less things in it to break. They are easier to work & wrench on. That being said. Nobody would deny what you said. Everybody knows that a 4WD can perform better in various terrains & overall handles better. Best part is you get to choose what you like. If it's 4WD. Cool. Do your thing.

    • @BlueOvals24
      @BlueOvals24 2 года назад +1

      @@sudsrc8261 My main thing against 2WD like I said is how on the slash it gets hung up on just slightly tall grass. Yes they're lighter, cheaper, easier to work on but imo the best part about this hobby is the driving and so far my experience with 2WD hasn't been good. That being said I am still considering 2WD for my next one. I currently only have a TRX4 and want to get something I can rip at a park or take to an indoor track in the summer. Do you have any recommendations both 2WD and 4WD? Because right now I'm considering a 4WD Stampede or maybe 2WD slash because there's a kit to make it a monster truck, I'm sure it won't get hung up on grass if it were taller. I'm sorry if my first comment came off as aggressive, like you said each to their own, I just think it's a bit strange to praise 2WD.

    • @thefriendlyteenager726
      @thefriendlyteenager726 2 года назад

      Well in my experience the center differential makes the car handle better at high speeds, it also makes it much more controllable over all

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 6 месяцев назад +1

      Center diff mainly gives better adjustability. A looser center diff will give you more off-power steering and traction at the expense of on-power steering and acceleration. A tighter one will give better on-power steering and acceleration but will reduce off-power steering and reduce rear traction on power. On a high-bite surface a tight center diff won't feel any different from a center spool (no diff), while a loose one will make the car better able to turn when coasting but less able to turn while accelerating. On a low bite surface, a loose center diff will make the car significantly more controllable. Differential tuning makes DRASTIC differences in how your car handles so if you want to start tuning how your car handles you'll want to start with the diffs to get the car in the ballpark of your preferred settings and then adjust the suspension to fine-tune it and get it fully dialed in.

    @168grhp 4 года назад +31

    This is good info for general differences between 2wd and 4x4 RC cars. When you're talking specifically about the Traxxas Slash though, the QUALITY difference between the two is substantial. The two-wheel drive is good for the price, but it uses an unsealed diff with tiny brass planetary gears that I've broken when running on brushless power. Four-wheel drive uses heavy-duty sealed diffs with quality steel gears that are much larger and stronger. The 4wd is just as easy to work on as the 2wd, the only difference being that you have two differentials to maintain. But considering the four-wheel drive version has much higher quality diffs, you will be doing less maintenance on them than for the two-wheel drive. regardless of which one you get, they're both a lot of fun. For racing at the track, definitely consider the 4wd/2wd LCG chassis for better handling.

    2wd vxl with TSM takes 2wd to another level of course still not a 4x4, but it has the capability to keep going when at times it just would not be able to without TSM , I was not a believer in the system, the hole principle behind it was totally against 2wd but once I decided to upgrade I can honestly say I have no regrets, I do have a stock slash for company and all I can say is wow

      IMO it's a pretty dated platform. You could do better. If you're getting 2wd? For the same price you can get the Losi 22S SCT. Better chassis. 4WD? You could get the Arrma Senton 3S for about $100 less.

    For the Slash platform especially, 4x4 is the only option unless you only drive on pavement or really compact and hard dirt or really short grass. I had a 2WD and got stuck on 5 inches of grass, and since I spend part of the year just bashing in parks, the traction is so much better. And even on pavement the 4x4 prevails because of breaking. Saving a few bucks is always something to consider, but you sacrifice too much by not picking the 4x4.

    • @AMain_Hobbies
      @AMain_Hobbies  5 лет назад +8

      Hi Daryl! If all was equal (ESC, Motor & LiPo), the 2WD would have the weight and drivetrain drag advantage, possibly allowing a taller gearing without overheating. In a drag race where surface traction isn't an issue, and you can keep the 2WD front wheels down, the 2WD should win every time. Consider this; the new'er Traxxas VXL 2WD models (Rustler, Bandit, etc.) are rated for 70MPH! Traxxas has no 1/10 4X4 models that can match those speeds.
