Question. How are biological women able to compete against her in sports when she has so many characteristics the majority of women will never have? And I'm not being mean as I ask this.
I empathize with her struggle to want to compete; however, stating that testosterone levels are not relevant is inaccurate. Training methods will of course enhance your performance but muscular development will physically provide an advantage. That is why doping is banned in international competition.
Um, every man and woman has different testosterone levels, period. I competed in a number of sports, including one in college. If another competitor naturally had higher testosterone than I did, though didn't have my other natural genetic traits or train the way I did, they would lose to me and/or other competitors. She is a she and that's it. There are a few other top female sprinters from Africa who don't have her condition, though their natural testosterone is high. The two women are sprinters and they've participated with all the testing protocols and organizations. The test results proved the women are drug free, yet have naturally elevated T. They've been banned as well. That's a genetic trait, so taking drugs to lower their T levels could wreak havoc to all their hormones. Then what?
I think the dividing line is the chromosome…do they have the female XX chromosome or the male XY chromosome? Traditionally from a biological stance XX is female and XY is male. Maybe this designation should be changed? The only issue I have is that Caster claimed that she learned via the news that she did not have ovaries or fallopian tubes..yet she never experienced menstruation. What mother does not thoroughly check out her daughter if she never has a period, especially if she is an athlete.
@@denicebracey8720 That's a great question and excellent points. I don't know enough about her culture to answer that, though I imagine they always knew she was different.

1:14 This photo is very telling. Even the leanest and most flat-chested of the female competitors, or those with the straightest hips, lack the v-shape of Semenya's torso, the broader shoulders and wide neck. Men's necks are on average about a third wider than women's, which gives them a distinct breathing advantage for quicker re-oxygenation of muscles. (Their hearts and lungs are larger too, and their muscles, tendons, and ligaments tighter and thus stronger -- more advantages. Not to mention their narrower hips, which absolutely convey advantage in running and cycling.) Semenya's DSD definitely makes him quite unique, but still male.
@KH-aug You made a fair argument filled with facts. Instead of making a counterargument, the commenter just threw out a thoughtless ignorant claim. Keep standing up for biology and women's athletics! Thank you.
@@kpat3052She has 5-alpha-reductase deficiency. People with this condition have testes, a normal male level of testosterone and functional androgen receptors, meaning that in a sporting context, her body effectively performs the same as that of a regular male. Even her brain is much closer to that of a man than that of the average woman, since people with this condition tend to identify as either men or extremely masculine women, and in both cases they themselves are usually attracted to women (just like typical straight males).

In the 1980s, when Jarmila Kratochvilova was competing, sex testing was mandatory. And no, it was never proven that Semenya was a "biological woman". Do you understand why Usain Bolt was banned from the women’s 100 meter event? It’s his favourite distance after all, and his testosterone levels are natural. Let me know if you can figure out the reason.
Semenya has testicles which produce male levels of testosterone, so she has the physique of a man. However, she lacks an enzyme that supercharges testosterone within specific tissues (such as the skin or the genitals), so she cannot grow a beard, and she looked like a girl when she was born (and so she was raised as one).
