    This method is also called “dusting.” It should always be done with dry hair, not wet or partially wet. I do not know about greasy hair, but it might still work. Another tip that I have gotten is to cut the ends while holding the scissors at a 45 degree angle to prevent the hair from splitting again. It is much like how barbers cut at an angle with hair shears or razors. The different types of split ends also have so many names. There are tapers, tree-splits, multi-tree-splits, off-shoots, knots, squiggles, and beads. You are also correct about the dark and light backgrounds. It is easier to see splits when you have both in front of you.
    It might also be useful to have a sticky lint roller because tiny hairs are annoying to clean up. I cut them on a hardware floor to sweep up after I am done.
    Another tip for split ends might be to use keratin shampoo to wash your hair as it kind of reinforces the ends with the protein and makes hair smoother and silkier, but I do not know how long those effects last.
    I have a lot of split ends, so doing this is very tedious for me, but I still do it because I just have brittle hair that splits easily due to an endocrine disease. I wonder if I should really just get a haircut, but I am nervous. I have never been to a hairdresser before. All of my “homemade” haircuts given to me by relatives were terrible.
    Either way, cutting split ends is good for healthy hair because it helps it grow uninterrupted and may help to reduce tangles because there are fewer uneven flaky parts for shafts to rub against.

    I do this anytime I get bored ... I just start playing with my hair and notice split ends, grab some scissors and start snipping away at individual ends. I didn't even know there was an actual term for this method! I kind of thought I was the only one who did this since friends and family always looked at me funny!

    I always search and destroy because I despise split ends and I see no point in growing my hair if I'm not borderline obsessive. My hair is just above my butt, blond and fine but there is a lot of it! I love your advice, the conch bun is the best!

    I've been doing this for years but I've never heard of it talked about as an actual trimming method before and thus never heard of it referred to as the "search and destroy." I'm so tickled rn by how badass that sounds haha.

    I use the trick where you fold a chunk over your finger and look for the pop up hairs. I also find my damaged ends easier to see on a dark surface, but I've got blondette-ish hair that just blends in with lighter colors. :) I've been able to avoid trimming for almost a year because of this!
    Fantastic explanation as per the usual. :)

    This is interesting. I actually do it. And I've never heard about it before I watched this video.
    It was three years since I cut my hair. I usually wash it with just water. It works great!
    I search and destroy while sitting outside in the sun. Its really easy to see the splits then. And its nice to just sit outside in the sun. I usually listen to an audio book at the same time. Relaxing =)

    See now, I thought I was being weird, Good to know I'm not alone. I Do all that you have mentioned. My hair is only 28 inches long but I also have to keep it there due to the fact of neglect on my part. (Lesson learned). Now I trim once a month. By keeping it at that length for awhile I hope will fix what I haven't done.

    So are you saying that "tapered" looking ends are also damage? I always thought the hair grew that way naturally so I often left those particular hairs alone. Whoops?

    • @desimisner7440
      @desimisner7440 5 лет назад

      Yes. Because ultimately your hair has been cut throughout your lifetime so your hair should have a flat tip. Baby hair that has never been cut will taper evenly to a point butt after that it should always have a blunt tip. If it's tapered, (try to visualize a typical hair split) it's because one of the "arms" has essentially broken off and you're left with one "arm" being the shaft. Now try to imagine a stick of string cheese...then peeling off a chunk of cheese from the stick... You know how the texture on the side had now changed where you tore the piece off and it's no longer smooth? That's what that strand of hair now looks like. Unhealthy and ripped on one side so it's tapered. Hope that helps. Its always best to just go in for trims or micro trims if you want healthy hair because your strands can be damaged at the hemline and you can't see it till it splits. Especially if you want it to grow, otherwise all the conditioner and oils and creams in the world aren't going to save your hair back to healthy. It just gives the false assistance of smooth hair. If you want it healthy and not just smooth, shell out a few bucks for regular trims. I promise girl, your hair will thank you and you'll thank yourself after a few months of looking in the mirror at it! Xo

    Before, my hair's really healthy, but now it's stiff, sticky, has split ends, has those white stuffs which I'm not sure if those are dandruffs because it seems infinite (I can see it when I use flashlight on my hair), and it has a weird smell. I think my hair's dry, and it's because I used shampoo everyday for a long time. Is that really the case? Can it still be repaired? How can I make it better?? I already had it cut, but I'm having a very hard time taking a bath since it's so sticky.

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  8 лет назад +1

      +Nicka Tan Did you change your shampoo or conditioner lately? Product buildup can make it very sticky. Some types of artisanal shampoos aren't meant to be combined with conditioner (once I tried a shampoo bar and followed up with conditioner, and I was barely able to brush through it, it was so sticky!). Try a clarifying shampoo to get all the product out, and then test your hair to see if it needs protein, moisture, or both. The Long Hair Community has a link to the hair test. Splits can't be repaired once they start, but you can prevent more from happening.

    My hair was very dark brown/black when I lived in New York. I moved to Florida I noticed my ends started to turn lighter than the rest of my hair. Does that mean my hair is damaged? I have bought a shower filter because the water is harder than new york. I condition all the time and apply oil (coconut or olive) to mid shaft of my hair to the ends.
    Thanks :)

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  10 лет назад

      UV rays can have a bleaching effect, so your hair might be lightening due to more exposure to the sun since you moved closer to the equator. Hair lightening could mean UV damage, or the formation of splits (usually you can tell if you look at each hair closely). Coconut and olive oils are great because they have a natural SPF of around 7-8, but obviously won't protect completely against everyday damage from the elements.

    • @gueyshart5476
      @gueyshart5476 10 лет назад

      Thank you for answering my question! I do use coconut oil a lot. I really don't want to chop off my hair since it took 2.5 years for me to grow if from shoulder length to middle of my back. I notice the bleaching affect when I observe my hair closely and its more toward the ends (maybe 1-2 from ends). I have to be more careful when stepping into the sun since I am not used to the weather here.
      I know you haven't made a hair video in a while but do you have any tips and precautions you normally take while out in the sun?
      I'm such a noob when it comes to long hair haha.
      Thanks!

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  8 лет назад +1

      +Brooke Bathory This hasn't been my experience. I've been doing this method for several years now and my split has never returned as long as I cut just above the visible split. There's no cut-and-dry rule that a split invisibly starts 1.5 inches above the actual damage.

    • @xcrunkxcorex
      @xcrunkxcorex 8 лет назад

      I guess it depends on how bad the damage is. My hair is 44 inches long and I trim well above the damage but I seem to have a never ending amount of split ends regardless lol

    • @desimisner7440
      @desimisner7440 5 лет назад

      Lucy's Corsetry you said that hasn't ever been your experience and that a split has never returned. How can you even verify that? There's absolutely no way for you to be able to say that with any certainty. All it takes is one swipe of the hair with your hand and that single strand is mixed back in to the rest of your hair, so you can never know if you're looking at that same strand later on to say that it hasn't splayed or split. Lol that was purely argumentative at the op.
