How much does 4 feet (48") of hair weigh? | Lucy's Corsetry

- Possibly the start to a "Rapunzel Labs" mini-series, depending on whether people want to see more simple experiments involving hair.
How much does my hair weigh? Today I determine the mass of my 48" of hair, both wet and dry.
Results? When dry, my hair weighs about 225g (1/2 lb) and when wet, my hair weighs about 350g (3/4 lb). Considering the fact that the human head weighs between 3.5 - 5.5 kg (8-12 lbs), this means that my hair only adds about 5% of the total weight of my head - totally manageable for my neck.

Nice video, Lucy! I recently got a foot of hair trimmed off, and now it sits right above my tailbone. Feels a lot better. On the LiveJournal long hair community, there was a post about a woman who'd had her ankle-length hair cut to a bob for a Locks of Love drive and a big thing everyone said was "oh, now you don't have so much weight on your neck". Her thinner, blonde, ankle-length hair, on a digital scale, didn't even add up to a pound.
I have almost 3 feet of hair and the only time it's heavy is when it's up
My friends weighed my dry hair the other day as 290-350g. I like the scientific approach you took! If I ever decide to do this again I'll be doing it your way, wet and dry and with replicates ^_^ You have gorgeous hair!

+Squeak Code So your hair weighs 10 - 12 ounces? And yet looking at your videos, your hair seems to be slightly below waist length! That just proves, as one would expect, that there's no direct relationship between hair length & weight.
I'm actually quite surprised. My hair is about half the length of yours (but probably thicker), and it gives me headaches when I keep it up for some time.
I think to get an accurate weight, you would have to detach the hair from the body (i.e., cut or shave it off). But I am sure your basic conclusion is true, which is that hair doesn’t weigh enough to make much difference, nor enough to put any strain on your neck.
I used to have long hair, and people said I must feel hot in the summer. I never found this to be true. If anything, the hair shaded my head and neck from the sun. Hair itself doesn’t have any nerves, of course, so I assume the question is about whether or not my head feels hot.
I do! I got it cut shorter only once before. It felt SO short, because I was used to being able to put my hand behind my back and grab the end of my hair. The long hair and vintage hair communities are my favourite. :)

I loved your explanation. The corsets were a plus because I have always liked them. I just wanted to grow my hair to my waist, but after seeing yours, I decided to grow it as long as it will go. My hair is 33 inches right now. I could only dream of having anywhere close to your length. Hair videos are always welcome!

thats seems kinda goofy to think that your hair may be heavy, mabe when you wear a bun it may feel a bit heavy on your head but not your neck to the point of pain that makes no sense to me but i guess it may be valid for some people.

Dang! That's a lot. Why didn't I think of that? 😮. Long hair gets heavy and thick; people claim that heavy hair causes headaches but I do believe that it is just a myth. Because a zillion things cause headaches.
Where were you before? I really want to show this video to some people who tormented me about my hair. They just don't understand that long hair doesn't even weigh a lot. When it's wet, you can feel the weight more, obviously, but it's not like it weighs 10 lbs. Great experiment, btw! :)

I've been growing my hair for 9 years straight. I have naturally thick hair. Its below my butt for reference (I'm a 6ft tall male). I'm planning on donating it but my main reason for wanting to cut it is to get relief from the weight. I'm guessing dry my hair weights 4-6lbs. And when sleeping I literally get my ponytail wrapped around my face and neck bc I twist and turn alot when I sleep. Long hair is a hobby lol.

You're hair's absolutely gorgeous :) I know what you mean about it not weighing much though because, though my hair isn't as long as yours, I have a Rapunzel wig I use for cosplay and everyone is shocked when they find out that's it not that heavy, even if it's over 60 inches long and the braid's probably about as thick as yours when you braid it :3

I just came back from doing a hair donation of 24 inches in length, plus a regular haircut after that. I was surprised when I weighed myself at home and saw that I had lost 6.5 pounds in the last 4 days. It got me wondering how much my hair had weighed and figures not much 😂 I guess I've just been very successful with my dieting (borderline fasting), or maybe the scale is lying.
My hair is around 26 inches long is that short or long many of my family members complain that its short or could it be that their comparing it to when it was 35inches

That was awesome, neat experiment! What is your ponytail circumference? I'm trying to let mine grow out again after shaving it all off but mine is really fine and thin, about 2-2.5" circumference max so I'm worried it won't be able to make it very far without tapering too much.

I weighed my cut-off ponytail, it was 55 grams... My hair was down to midback at the point of cutting it. Some of it ended up on the floor, but I wouldn't say more than may 20 grams. So the length of my hair couldn't have weighed more than a maximum of 75 grams... I can't use conditioner (don't need to, never tangles) or dry shampoo, everything weighs it down :D But my pixie cut now makes my hair look a lot fuller than when I had it long, 'twas a pitiful sight before.

My hair is definitely heavier. Although it's bit shorter than 40 inches (and I've actually had it as long as yours in the past, but it's caused me headaches), it's significantly thicker. I'm glad it's still not as thick as my mum's, as that would be trouble :) (though I assume that it would have been as thick hadn't I kept it long for years)

In order to weigh your hair properly, you need to shave it off completely. :-)))) It would be around 300 g. And when wet, it might reach about 1 lb. :-)
I have not have a haircut for about 20 years, still my hair does not grow that long...I think this is genetics as well. And also, I have curly hair,so obviously, it always seems shorter than it is.

I love Torrin/Heather's videos :D I usually use the Nautilus with a hairstick though XD for work and whatnot. That's a lot trimmed, but I bet it looks a lot nicer on the ends! I recently took off an inch hehe.

blah i want my hair to grow long sooo bad but im afraid i just might not have the genes for it, right now my hair is 25 inches and about every 3 or 4 months i get an inch cut off because of split ends and it doesnt seem like it wants to grow past what it is now =( darn my genetics
hmm, agreed. but as in malaysia, most girls preferred guys with short hair. but as for me, keeping long hair's quite a satisfaction even though sometimes i'm a lil bit annoyed with them because those long hair's are quite messing in my face (as guys are not supposed to wear any hair accessories). any suggestion to keep long hair or bangs out of my face? :)

amazing experience! this had to be done! I just wonder how much of the hair close to head is not in the weight. Many years bak while joking I've told about this method of weighing long hair.: first wight yourself, second shave the hair, third weigh again yourself, then do the subtraction...
Not good in my opinion even for precision, average 200gr on a average 60kg scale is less precise to weigh than for its own only weight. Bets would be weighing the shaved hair, but OMG NO!
