  • The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been fully redesigned for the first time in 40 years. But don’t be fooled. This ultra-luxe SUV still feels like it was carved from a single block of steel-and it drives like it, too.

Few cars are as luxurious or as capable as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, and virtually none manage to be both. Originally built as a military-purpose trucklet, the G-Class has evolved to a swanky status symbol. With an interior draped in leather and exterior sparkling with chrome, this might very well be the most distinctive Mercedes on sale today.
And boy, oh boy, is it fast. The G550 (like our test car) comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 good for 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Buy an AMG G63, and Mercedes bumps those numbers up to 577 hp and 627 lb-ft. This means the G-Class will embarrass low-slung sports cars in a straight line. Just don’t take any turns at high speed, as the G-Class is almost certain to roll over in those situations.
Mercedes employs its Comand infotainment system in the G-Class, rather than the newer MBUX system you’ll find in cars like the A-Class. There are plenty of tech features integrated with the Comand system, but the G-Class still retains some old-school charm. The door handles, for instance, use push-button lock cylinders, meaning you won’t find keyless entry on the options list.
Pricing starts at extravagant and climbs from there. Base MSRP sits at $124,500 (plus a $995 destination charge) and the G63 starts at $147,500, cresting $175,000 with all options. For more information on the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, read Cliff’s full review on CarGurus: cargur.us/vdsHW

This is the new S class. Built to last. Even if no one takes it off-roading, it is old school luxury. Bravo.

Great review except you CAN get 360 camera on the G550, just don't get the brush guard.
