      Keep Calm and Carry-on Only is my motto for travel. Travel is stressful. It is a one-off, usually, pricey investment , some people travel occasionally, procedures change, and there is limited recourse if you mess up. I would suggest tips to reduce stress. You may already have done this in a video I missed.
      Before you leave home review the map of the airport and what is in your terminal (check-in, TSA, bathrooms, food), know your trip locator number, scan all documents on to your phone in one easy to reach location, arrive early then plan how you will spend the extra time (read about where you are going, browse the shops, have a coffee, call ahead to next location if you need something at that end, check map of arrival airport.)
      Check weather in arrival area to anticipate delays. As you do, I carry a compression bag and add a thin nightgown in my under-seat bag.
      Try not to take the last flight from an airport to your final destination. Take earlier flights giving you more daylight hours to reach final destination.
      Smile, be nice to all airport personnel. Do not be afraid to ask for help there might be more experienced travellers around to help. Carry a few light snacks in small packets. You may not need them but some else might. Be helpful to others if you can.
      You could add many more to this.

      Laurie, out of topic, I have consumed all your channel almost in just a couple of weeks hahaha 😂
      I'm a coach in Uruguay (South America) and I'm traveling with 2 other adults (every decision is on me though), with 8 kids 7 to 13 years old to compete in gymnastics in Perú also South America.
      We are trying to minimize luggage, I do plan in take a couple full size 23 kg. Because Teens are a lost battle 😂. But mostly gymnastics related staff that they need to have on the plane because it CAN'T get lost and I gets bulky. Also our first aid kit have to go on the belly. 8 kids is a nightmare doing international, minor papers and not lose one single paper (or child 😅). Or carry on. So I learn the hard way: no liquids, I put a shampoo and a conditioner on the big luggage and we share the entire week. And everything they manage to spend their money on!!! Imagine running through, "hunny put your backpack, shoes, bla bla bla and your zip jacket from the gym and your empty water bottle" and also made them open the backpack for liquids nooooo... 8 timesssss hahaha and never fails someone take the perfume no matter how many times you said before the travel... others didn't listen when you said it was time to empty the water bottles and check in... is an adventure! Have fun with that! And pray for me 😂 I love it.
      I have a question, the backpacks that have the measurements correct as personal item, don't have wheels, but inside you can open them as a small "carry on" like a lot of pockets but also a compartment just like a common carry on. Count as a personal item for under the seat as they sell it to the people no? I trust more in you hahaha
      Thank tou

    • @TravelTipsbyLaurie
      @TravelTipsbyLaurie  8 месяцев назад

      Hi, so carry-on can be several items; it's the size that makes it a carry-on bag. Personal item can be several things as well, but it's the size that qualifies it as a personal item. Just google your airline + personal item or carry on to find the measurements.@@agusguti

    I’ve had Global Entry for several years and used it 3 or 4 times coming back into the US. But on my last trip, I used a tip from a youtube viewer comment I saw. I downloaded the Mobile Passport app and completed the form prior to my flight. Upon entry to the US airport, I compared the lines for Global Entry and Mobile Passport, and used the much shorter Mobile Passport line in stead of Global Entry. Easy peasy, in and out in no time. Much faster than the Global Entry line.

    I just did my Global Entry Interview at DFW (my home airport) this past Thursday - March 7th, 2024 and it was a piece of cake! I waited maybe 10 minutes and went in and out in about 2 mins. I feel like it's not even an interview, they had me hand them my passport, I had my water bill as proof of residency, but they never asked for it, they filled out stuff on their computer then they had me rest both my hands on a thumb print machine, took my picture, then he told me I"d get an email with my member number and my ID card will be sent within the month and I signed the form and that was it! I went in at 9:00 and was out of there by 9:15! I did all the preliminary stuff online including precheck, I think it's well worth it just to keep from waiting in line! Laurie I just found you and enjoy your channel so much and I love that we're both in Texas! ;) You rock and I appreciate all your advice!

I think it just depends on where you live and how busy they are. Check your Dashboard and see if it shows "conditional approval." Hope you get your interview and member card soon!

    We recently renewed our Global Entry for another 5 years. It makes re-entry into the US SO quick and easy! The first time we used it, we were the only ones from our flight who went through the Global Entry line, while the rest off the plane were crowded into the regular lines. We travel internationally at least 2 or 3 times a year so it was a no-brainer for us. We did our first-time interview at Philadelphia airport before we did any flights. The renewal was done completely on-line, so easy.

    I can't imagine why people think it is necessary to make rude comments! I may not agree 100%, but it is easy enough to say "here is my experience" or "here's another take."
    Global entry is on my radar. We don't travel internationally often, but last time going through immigration/customs in JFK was a mess! Our TSAprecheck is almost up, so its a good time.
    I will say, getting off the cruise ship in a US port has gotten pretty easy. They have face scanners and once they scan you, off you go. I don't even think I saw an agent on my last cruise!

    My husband and I just had our interviews this past Tuesday. We were lucky to get an interview the week after we signed up online. Due to high demand, they were having special events and the Miami office held an event in Jacksonville, which is a 3-hour drive for us but was well worth it. We arrived an hour before our scheduled interview but they took us straight in and we were done in less than 10 minutes. My husband received an email saying he was approved before we even got home (maybe because he is retired military) and I got my email the next day. I found the scheduling process the hardest part. For anyone trying to get an appointment, just keep checking and good luck!

    we got our global entry last year. We drove 7+ hours to Houston for our interview-- it was the only place listed with appointments available for us back in May 2023. We couldn't do the interview after our international flight arrived in Atlanta because it was scheduled to arrive after the offices had closed. We are so glad we got our Global entry!!!!- only took about 7 minutes to clear customs in Atlanta. Our flight was 1:10 hours late in leaving Amsterdam, and another international flight landed before ours. There was only 1 agent on duty for regular customs that night and one agent for global entry. Delta was sending me a voucher for free hotel and info about getting on another flight home the next day because of the plane's late arrival.. Global Entry is so worth it -- no stress!!

I would add that your viewers should check all the benefits of their credit cards; my airline-branded credit card gave me a statement credit for the GE fee once my application had been accepted so I basically paid nothing. And I still got miles!

  • @adamleer1
    @adamleer1 8 месяцев назад +7

    One nice tip is look at your credit cards as some will pay this $100 fee. My Amex does and one of my airline cc does too! You charge with that card and it reimburses. Just check your CC benefits! My beloved son in law kept procrastinating for his kids and on an international trip coming home we were in line for 2 hours as each person has to have their own Global Entry. Renewals are easy as you just fill out online form - no interview on renewal and approved quickly. Plus Global Entry number gets you precheck line for domestic flights too so no need to pay twice!

    I had an almost miraculous experience applying for global entry, so much so that my interviewer at the appointment commented on it. My passport expired last year so I had to renew it. I just sent it in through USPS with a check for normal processing in mid-Nov. I thought it would take 6-8 weeks to get back, the USPS worker warned me of the same, but I got my new passport about a week later! The card took a little while longer, but I wasn't urgently waiting for it. The day I got my passport, applied and was conditionally approved within a few hours, and I looked to see where the global entry office near me was and when the available interview would be. As luck would have it, I was checking on a Friday, and there was one slot available the next Tuesday. The entire rest of the month of December, and probably going into Jan, was full! The building where the interview would take place? A place just 5 minutes walk from my office in the city! I went out for half an hour and got back so quickly my coworkers were confused.

    I have had Global Entry for 2 years. It is wonderful. I applied in March, and first available interview was September, when I was going to be out of the country. I saw the option to interview upon my return, but I am usually so exhausted that I doubted I would be lucid enough to be a good interviewee, so ... I called the Border Patrol and was told to keep checking back because there are often slots that open up. I kept doing that and was able to schedule for July. Then I checked again on a Friday in April, and there was a slot available for first thing that next Monday morning. It took about a week for me to receive my Global Entry ID card. Yes, they will take your picture during the interview.

    Finally got my global entry in month and a half ago. I went to Cozumel and came back through Houston hobby. I still had to stand in the regular line and then when I got to the officer let her know that I wanted to do my interview. She then said go sit over there with the rest of the group. Tried to tell me it would take over an hour to get it done but she was not correct. Well we were waiting. One of the officers came over and gave us all together the rules and regulations. I had all my backup information showing address etc and they was never asked for any of that. Within 5 minutes I was on my way to my connecting flight to Denver! I was so glad somebody had told me to do that and not wait for the interview. Speaking of the interview... The interview that I did have scheduled for March was automatically canceled just like the officer said it would. So once you get an interview you don't have to worry about going back in and canceling an interview that you've made for future. I can hardly wait to use my global entry for the first time when I go to Aruba in June!

This past December we renewed our passports and it was easy to log into our CBP account to update the new passport numbers. Yesterday we cleared customs in CLT on the way home from Jamaica. The Global Entry line was very quick. We had our photo taken at the machine and then advanced to the agent who looked at our passport, asked if we had anything to declare, gave a yellow GE card, and said thank you. A Tip for those heading to your interview. Stay calm and breath. The Border Patrol agents come across threatening and imposing because that's their training. My agent was super nice and at the end told me to loosen up. He said that being stiff and panicky will make you look like you are hiding something. Just be polite and calmly answer the questions so everything can run smoothly.

    I’ve had global entry a couple years now, and I did my interview in Ireland! Dublin Airport has US pre-clearance facilities, so you are clearing US immigration and customs before you even leave on your flight home. This includes being able to do the in person interview for global entry. On both ends of Irish travel from Boston the lines are often horrendous. It’s a very busy route. Believe me, I thank my lucky stars every time I zip past that line!

    I applied for global entry 2 weeks ago on a Friday and was approved by the following business day. I was kinda shocked with how quick it went. Thankfully my home airport opened as a global entry interview location in December and I was able to get an interview for next week. One tip I have, if you don’t plan to travel internationally anytime soon is to use a service like Global entry spotter so help scan for interviews at your preferred locations. I hear new slots open every 9th of the month but sometimes people cancel and that may open a spot up for you.

    I have had global entry for some time and just renewed it. I only take one international trip per year and it was completely worth it to me. There has been at least once when my flight ran late and without global entry I would never have made my connecting flight.
    As to cost, it doesn’t cost that much more than pre check.

    One thing to remember is to always bring your Global Entry card with you when coming back to the USA from an international flight. Always, always. Better have it and not need it than need it and not have it. A few times in the past years my boarding pass didn’t print the TSA Precheck check mark and I would pull out my GE card and show it to the agent so they could print new boarding passes.

  • @wateroffaduck2353
    @wateroffaduck2353 8 месяцев назад

    I had 2 international trips last year, 1 before I got GE & 1 after. It was so worth getting it! Think about it, it only costs $20/yr & includes TSA PreCheck. I got conditionally approved in a couple of days & I made my appt for Black Friday so there was absolutely no traffic going to or from JFK. Interview took 5 min, they asked the same questions Laurie mentioned, digitally fingerprinted me, took a digital photo & told me my card would come in the mail in about a week but that my Traveler ID# was active immediately. So u don't need the card at the airport, just ur passport & of course add ur ID# to ur flight reservations.

    I got nexus (I’m in Canada) for myself and family about ten years ago and it has been a such a game changer and worth every penny. My tip is to make sure you have all your information, data, documents ready whether you are filling out information online as well as when you go in for your interview. Also, when going in your interview, be nice. I saw someone being quite rude to the agent they were dealing with. Why do that. These people see it all and have to deal with all kinds of scenarios. The more prepared you are the quicker and easier it will be. 😊

      I really wish I’d known Global entry and MPC are basically the same thing! I thought global entry helped with foreign customs as you go into other countries, not just the return into the US! We used MPC last year returning from Europe. It was free and had less people in line than global entry, and we found it very easy to use the app on our phone. I would have just saved the $100 I just spent on GE.

    This is the one I've been interested in lately . I didn't know about this program til 3, 4 years ago ! 😅 I think international travelers who know that they travel overseas more than 2 ,3 times within 5 years should get it ,or someone who travel with small kids or elderly should ,or passengers w medical issues . Waiting in a line for hours isn't good for people w any medical issues .

    I got Global Entry several years ago after multiple attempts and lots of frustration. The problem, it turned out, was that I was doing the application online using my IPad. The passport people told me that most of the time when people have difficulty applying it’s because they used their phone or IPad to apply. Use a computer and save yourself major headaches!

    30 minutes plane exit to my car at LAX returning from Istanbul lsat Friday at 5:30 pm. Global entry is the absolute best thing in international travel. If you have trouble getting an interview and live on the West Coast.... schedule it in Las Vegas (plenty of spots available when I did it) on a Friday afternoon and make a weekend out of it. My interview was a little longer than others because I travel to the middle east... but still, it wasn't a big deal.

    When you get conditionally approved for Global Entry, try to find a CBP office that is near you but not in a major airport. Some offices are near smaller international airports or shipping ports. You may get an interview much faster at these locations than going to an airport or waiting for your trip and doing the interview when you arrive back in the US. The CBP TTP website regularly posts open time slots that you can schedule on their website.

    This was an incredibly easy experience. I applied for Global Entry on 5/1/24 at 3:35am. I was conditionally approved on 5/2/24. I immediately looked for an appointment to have the interview and there was an appointment on 5/3/24 at the Global Entry center at Orlando International Airport. But since the walk from the garage was very long, I checked Sanford Airport and they had an appointment on 5/10/24. I arrived early and they took me a few minutes early. My “interview” took 7 minutes. Just confirmed my name, address, place of work and my countries of visit since 2019. My fingerprints were taken and the officer gave me my KTN. By the time I got back my car I got an email and was approved. I was shocked at how easy and fast the entire experience was from beginning to end.

I had to stand on the regular long line and the first time I missed the interview guy by three minutes (the guy pointed to him and said “that’s they guy but you missed him by three minutes”) and so I had to wait until I came back from my next trip and stood on the long line again and then waited probably an hour to have my interview, which took three minutes. But I imagine other airports are nicer than Newark.

    I tried to do my interview at JFK terminal 7, but was told I would have to wait at least 45 mins or more (for the rest of the flight I was the first in line for). Decided that was too long after an 8 hour transatlantic flight. Got it later near my home though. I think the interview on arrival is dependent on the resources they have. Some airports and terminals might be better than others.
