    I haven’t submitted any books for grading but I’ve watched a ton of CGC unboxings. Content creators love giving CGC free advertising and I also suspect some creators aren’t very creative with their content. But you by far have made the best unboxings vids because you show every aspect of the grade reveals AND you balance it out with your great excel chart. That really brings it home for me.
    As far as your grades I give up on trying to figure out how CGC grades anything. There doesn’t seem to be any consistency and honestly we’ll never know because their grading standards are a secret. Take the win man.
    Maybe submitting 10 comics is the key. Many people submit 25 at a time and it’s always hit or miss.

    • @ImproveCollectingComics
      @ImproveCollectingComics  2 года назад +5

      Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it! And I suspect you are probably right.. it's hit or miss. You nailed, it by the way.. I decided going forward to spread out my risk among small samples of books.. It takes like 3-4 weeks to prepare 10 books for sending off, so it gives me 1 unboxing a month on average.. which I think is about the sweet spot for me. I have about 120 books waiting in boxes to be cleaned/pressed and submitted.. so I should get a lot of practice over the next 6 months to a year!

    That Star Wars 81 has a worse ding than my SIKCT 1 with its two tiny spine ticks.
    Your grader must have had a good night before work 😂

    • @ImproveCollectingComics
      @ImproveCollectingComics  2 года назад +1

      Indeed... I did look at my notes and apparently a 1/16th color breaking crease is allowed on a 9.6.. maybe since it was the only defect, they just categorized the spine ding as a crease or whatever. We'll never know, since there are never seem to be any grader's notes below a 9.4

    How 'liquid' are graded books?
    Do slabs normally sell quickly for the FMV, or is it a situation where you might have to wait a while before finding the 'right' buyer wiling to pay the asking price?

    • @ImproveCollectingComics
      @ImproveCollectingComics  Год назад

      It can be quickly or take some time... it depends on how aggressively someone prices the books or is willing to negotiate. Of course, slabbed books can be moved quickly at 80%-110% FMV via an auction... but the fees suck.

    Solid, man. Congrats. My first batch, that I mentioned in another video, had a number of 9.8s that I was convinced 9.6 at best but banking on 9.4, surprised me as well given what I spent on them. There were all New era books so I figured graders would be harsh. I took those 9.8s and ran. I still had a few disappointments, but the 9.8s I got scrubbed that sets very quickly.

    • @ImproveCollectingComics
      @ImproveCollectingComics  2 года назад

      Thanks! And I agree, always grade harshly like you expect from CGC, and usually you shouldn't often be dissapointed. Unfortunately, my next couple of unboxings won't be this happy.. I used to use a presser (with a stellar reputation) who did a shoddy job and actually made some of the books worse than when they arrived. The first of those unboxing videos will come out next Sunday.

    Nice haul!
    That copy of ASM #361 really helps to validate my growing opinion on CGC grading:
    - Sellers can sell the numerical grade.
    - Buyers must always buy the book.
    I've got stacks of questionable 9.8's.
    Likewise, I've got boxes of pristine 9.0's through 9.6.
    Your videos always make me laugh.
    You and I could swap collections, and it would take a few hours to recognize the narrow differences.
    In terms of valuing your collection, it always pays to be overly critical of your books.
    It's often best to wait for your submissions to come back from a newly hired grader who has been plied with copious amounts of sweetened iced coffee!
    Thanks again for sharing...

      I used to think newsstands were somehow inferior due to the lack of art in that little box.. but then, once I discovered the rarity of ultra high-grade newsstands I changed my tune. There's something about finding a nearly perfect book that was intended for the mass audiences versus the comic book collector that gets my blood boiling.. these were books that were generally not bought to be collected, but to be read (and often discarded)

    Yo they had to switch the labels , something is off . I've watched a couple of Minthunters videos , where they've switched books obviously and actually sent him 2 of the same book with the same serial number . He only submitted one ... Theres no way that SW 81 is a 9.6 . ABsolutely Ridiculous. CGC is on the downhill

      Yeah you might be right, I saw those videos as well. Unless that top spine is somehow consider bindery???? highly unlikely
      But the book is perfect otherwise, if they just call that top "crunch" a crease, then it would only be allowed to be 1/16".. I have no idea how to measure that though
      Personally, I would never grade it above 9.2 on a good day

      @@ImproveCollectingComics no way in my book .. that’s a 9.2 at best .. I mean what’s the point of grading through CGC if that’s a 9.6 .. I had an FF 48 that they gave me and my Dad a 9.2 about 6 years ago that I’m still salty about . They “said “ it had some rub on the back of the spine . There was no rub . We got robbed . That book was a 9.4 + all day . What really hurt was it was my dads .. you know what I mean ? But then to see that book get a 9.6 ? With that corner ? I’m sorry but without basic consistency they might as well be Olympic figure skating judges . This isn’t Olympic figure skating ..
      i mean hey I’m happy for you man , the other ones were a shade generous , but again you probably did a better job than you thought , and you may have under estimated ! Kudos to you man , but that corner is smashed . That one ain’t right imo

    I don’t think All Star Squadron #47 is Todd McFarlane’s first cover... I think it’s Coyote #13.

    • @ImproveCollectingComics

      Yeah I got it wrong, I think it's his first story.. the first cover is 100% coyote 13 and infinity inc 14, which were published the same month

    I bet you if you cracked open that last spawn book and resent it it would come back A 9.6

      I recently looked it over again and looked at other 9.8's out there, I've seen some much worse 9.8's than mine.. maybe they are more lenient on this book for some reason, like maybe there was widespread distribution flaws or printer errors originally?

      I definitely understand collecting raw only.. I've seriously wrestled with going that route, since it's a much purer way to collect IMO. However, I am doing it for a side profit, and it's kinda imperative to get books slabbed on that front. I get you though, that's also what's great about the hobby.. we can each carve our own path on how we enjoy our books
