Happy collecting!
I just found this video and can't thank you enough for sharing this! I am new to the comic CPR world and found this incredibly helpful! I greatly appreciate your humble and conservative approach to investing and collecting. Thank you again for this video!!!
You're welcome, and thanks!
Lol, you are WAY too modest! As far as I’m concerned, you’re already one of the best out there as far as cleaning and pressing!
That's very nice of you to say, comments like this keep me going :)
Finally sat down with your grading tool with a few books and dug info to it like how spreadsheet is built. Good system, conservative but I think that keeps you honest and drives to keep your pressing process at a high standard. Thanks and your comment section is filled with great insight and minimal trolls. Refreshing 👍🏾
Cool, thanks!
I cannot stress enough how much I am inspired by your videos. This is exactly what I hope to start doing with the hobby.
Thanks, Jason. I really appreciate the feedback.. it keeps me going!
Can’t wait to see the fix videos on those books.
Thanks! I just cracked my first batch last night and am starting work on them today
I’ve been hoping you’d start this kind of video series. It’s the perfect balance for your talents.
Thanks! It's gonna be fun (for me at least!) :)
Looking forward to some education. Getting a lot out of these videos as well as keeping it fun !
Really enjoying your videos. As a beginner retailer, your videos have been very helpful in terms of the buying process and in helping me to think about getting some books graded in the future. Great information!!
Great to hear! Thanks!
Your strategy is impressive I had been buying some lower graded books with a similar idea but I do not press books. Look forward to seeing the results you get.
At least as far as I have seen, your track record has proven that you have a good eye for comic upgrade candidates, following the mantra that your father taught you. And that's smart intuition coupled with your excellent rehab skills usually seems to pay off dividends. 👍
Thanks, David.. of course I think I have overpaid a couple times recently.. gotta watch that
Great video Jim. I watched it in its entirety. I love the Star Wars shirt. You know I always catch the references albeit obvious in this video. LOL. I was almost 6 and a half when Star Wars A New Hope came out in theaters. My parents took me to watch it. I remember we also saw Empire Strikes Back together. I still to this day remember my mom falling asleep during one of the Storm Troopers scenes. When I saw Return of the Jedi in theaters I was in 5th grade, and my friend's mom took us. I have sense owned all of the movies and even saw the original three when they came back to movie theaters years later. What a great time. I loved all of the books you featured in this video. Great grading tool and ebay tutorial. I will definitely zoom to 175% from now on. Just like when a good song comes on the radio. We don't turn the volume to 10. We turn it to 11.
Thanks so much for the story. That sounds very similar to mine. The first movie I ever went to was a new hope in 1978 at a drive in theatre... I was 4. I am not sure I remember it, I think I used to.. but I know it started a lifelong love in both the franchise and all things imaginative. I do remember going to Empire and Return.
I still have all my Star Wars figures (that I didn't lose) from then. That transitioned to me getting into Transformers, and my first comic was an early Transformers. Then I found Spider-Man just a couple of years before the Mcfarlane run.
You are right that it was pretty much the best time in history to be a kid. I wish we could do it again.. but we get to take ourselves back to that time anytime we crack a comic, thumb through a long box, or go to an LCS. Only the people that watch this channel and channels similar to mine get it. Thanks for being one of those people!
@@ImproveCollectingComics Awesome story as well. My Star Wars figures are still at my parent's house. I need to dig them out some time. I've got several GI Joe vehicles and figures as well. You're totally right. Such a great time to be a kid, and comics and all of the nostalgia take me back.
You have a Berry good bit of knowledge sir! Ty fer sharing toe skills abs collection.
In the future, can you show two books you reviewed before purchasing? Like the last two it came down to before you made your purchase. If you explained why you made the final choice, that would be a great help. As I have said before and will continue to say, I really think you will, officially, be one of the most trusted voices in your corner of Comic Book RUclips by the end of 2023. Thanks for all you do!!
Sure thing! I'll make sure to do a detailed video on the entire process.. likely when I buy my next "big" book.
Thanks so much for the kind words, it really means a lot!
@@ImproveCollectingComics I can't wait. And, hey man, I only speak the truth! Life is too short for lies. :)
I cannot wait to see how the ASM 129 comes out. The walk through from around 14 minutes on was very helpful. Thank you.
Cool, thanks for letting me know!
I think a couple of things 1) Shipping is part of the book cost, and 2) Some sellers (like Mile High) use stock photos, and only list the estimated grade in the actual text description. Mile High likewise will use images of direct editions for newsstand editions and vice versa. So if it looks like a 9.8 but it’s listed as VF, etc. Believe the listing :)
Yes, I should have been clearer on that. My philosophy is to make the seller pay shipping. By that, I mean that if we are willing to pay $40 for a book and the shipping is $7, we bid no higher than about $30, to account for shipping and taxes. Sure, we don't get many books.. but we do get books.. and the extra margin pays off over the long run.
Thank you for posting this video. I’m a lot wiser now for when I do my next purchase to invest. The graph is so helpful and know that took a while to complete. Til next video
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment!
Great video! Can't wait for the series! I'm about to buy a press and start this process myself, thank you for all of the information that you share!
Thanks and you're welcome!
I am working on a video now on getting rid of poly creases... those bends along the entire center of the back of books that have been in poly bags for years. Like Spider-Man 1. I'm trying to fix 6 books for the video..going well so far, but we'll see!
Great Video! 👍
Great stuff. Love seeing MSHSW8 as a “centrepiece” on the wall!
Thanks! That's a great book.. my copy looks almost like a 9.9.. I wish :)
@@ImproveCollectingComics I have my CPV from when I originally bought it way back when. At best a 9.0 but still super happy with it! Great video again, really like the insights.
Great advice. I do like to hunt for raw 9.8 candidates of books (especially 80s) that are like $150 plus in 9.8 but not terribly pricey raw.
It's a lot of fun to find hidden gems, for sure. There's also decent amount of money in it. If you can break even at 9.4, make a small amount at 9.6, and make a big return at 9.8.... that seems to be the sweet spot.
Love some of those raw books! :) Excited for the giveaway - fingers crossed!
GL!
I really enjoyed this video. Very informative. Thanks.
You're welcome and thanks!
And that's how it's done! Thank you so much for the informative detailed buying process. Looking forward to utilizing the grading tool in the future. Keep up the great content.
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks Jim! You spoiled us with a mid-week video. I can't wait to see how you make out on your books. That's what I'll be doing after I'm done pressing my own and gain more experience. I'm starting to surprise myself with some of my results though, and soon I will try some of my more valuable ones. Thanks for helping me get back into the hobby!
Great to hear! Keep rocking it!
Great selection of books to work on cant wait to see the results.
Thank you! Me too!
Very good video!
Nice comics.
Wow simply amazing.
Thank you! Cheers!
I actually want to try this.
Nice, you should! It's a lot of fun
One of if not your best video to date. Hits exactly what I was looking for. My question is when you start searching, do you have a list of specific issues you look for, like a go to list? I ask this because when I look I feel like I don’t reach outside books I am familiar with.
I basically ballpark the grade by looking at key areas of the book. The biggest tell-tale signs of a book's grade is the corners and the spine. If the corners are sharp and the spine isn't beat up with color breaking tics, I then look for obvious deal-breaker issues.. like tears, creases, etc.
Of course, if you are looking for mid grade or lower books, it's the same process.. you just loosen your requirements.
@@ImproveCollectingComics thanks that’s a good system. But I really meant what books. Like do you have go to books that you always fall back on when you start searching.
Good stuff!
Thanks!
Excellent videos sir! I learn a great deal watching your videos. Much appreciated. I have a number of books I think are 9.8 with press and clean. I am inspired by your efforts but not currently in a situation to start doing the work myself so I was thinking I would send them to CGC and ask for their service. Do you think they will do tack iron type work and any significant cleaning or are they just lightly dusting the book and putting it in a press? Some of the books have a few spine tics to clean up, others have creases on a white spine, etc. Just trying to understand if your effort to rejuvenate a book is typical of 'clean and press' or atypical. Thanks!
I am not sure how CCS operates.. I have heard they don't mess with tack iron work but I actually have no idea. Maybe someone on here can comment if they know. I recommend trying KKL comics and pressing, you can find him on Instagram. A lot of people recommend his work.
That Hulk 271 would be the type of book you could do all that work to and by the time you complete the work and get it back from the grader, it might drop 40% - 50% in market price - not worth it.
Very good point. If doing this strictly for profit, it's probably best to stick to books that don't have huge fluctuations
Just wondering your opinion on a comic I have it's the Amazing Spider-Man 2 I think cause it's not in front of me lol but definitely the first appearance of the Lizard...The big problem is it has three binder holes through it almost like it was put in one back then and someone brought it to school that way...Sorry for the two long comments
Usually the max grade is about 2.5. But sometimes recently I've seen them give a green label to hole punched books with high grades. So if it is an 9.4 or whatever without the holes, they might give it a qualified 8.0 green label. This is just a big guess, though... please let us know what happens if you submit.
I'm subscribed can't believe the comic your giving out for award. I need that one too. I think this about 8th video I watch. Just found you couple days ago. Do you sell comics too ??
That's so cool, glad you are enjoying the channel! I feel humbled. I do sell some of the comics I work on at ShortBoxed. The link should be in the descriptions of my videos.
That comic looks familiar. Def going to get a grade bump.
Yeah, I heard it was a key.. but not sure. I need to check Gooble to find out
@@ImproveCollectingComics ya.. I come across those all the time in 99 cent books along with DarkHawks
I have cracked and pressed a few books they always come out looking a lot better every single time I've gotten exact same grade back or lower so I don't think I'll be trying it anymore I don't understand I make a huge Improvement in the book and it comes back a lower grade so frustrating
Dang, sorry to hear that. Don't give up though!
Very cool information and look into your thought process. Did you end up buying any of those?
That was awhile back but I do remember picking up a couple
Thank you for the videos you share! They really help! (Hope I did this right for the comic book giveaway

Thanks I have been wondering if I should get some of my childhood collection graded. Also I have an asm 311 signed by Stan Lee and todd McFarlane I got it signed at San Diego con in the 90s how will this get graded? I don’t have any certifications but I have a picture with me and Stan with the book.
If you go CGC they will just write "Stan Lee and Todd Mcfarlane written on the cover" or something like that... they won't certify it.
However, CBCS will... so that's like your best option if you want it slabbed.
Excellent, informative video as always. Have you ever had to deal with residue from a price tag? Have The Amazing Spider-man 252 - looks in near-mint condition otherwise and wonder if it could be worked on. Followed and liked.
Some people recommend goo-be-gone or whatever. I did try it once, but it didn't seem to work well. However, a heat overlay press did the trick. It will take off just about any substance it seems (boogers included lol) KaptainMyke's book gives details on how to do it
@@ImproveCollectingComics Thank you very much. That's very kind of you to respond, and to do it so quickly! Kind regards from a UK follower.
Im curious as too what do you do with the cases after you crack open them? Can they be re-used? Are they recyclable or do they go in the trash?
I actually have no idea.. I just throw them away. If anyone knows if they can be recycled, please let me know.
How can I get your grading tool you demonstrated? Thanks
A link is in the description, let me know if you like it!
That dark cover is difficult to get in a high grade
Indeed
Just received your confirmation email on the newsletter...found it quite hilarious. My parents retired to Sun City in Fort Mill South Carolina.
Does anyone have a cleaner/presser they recommend? Wish Jim would do it!
I would use the guy @MintHunterComics uses.. I forget who it is, but maybe someone can post it.
I wish Jim would do mind too! I'll just keep hounding him till he gives in, lol.
Where do you get your pressing and cleaning from ?
I do it myself. I use KaptainMyke's methods. My website is improvecollecting.com if you want to see the products I use to clean/press.
If you don't mind me asking what state are you from?I'm in CT and just subscribed yesterday but for some reason you look familiar and I didn't want to look like some weirdo asking you but I said screw it that's why I'm asking lol
Stalker!!! J/K. I live near Charlotte, NC
@@ImproveCollectingComics Lmfao🤣🤣...I have family in a little place called Bessemer City NC....Small world
Packing peanuts a terrible use something else they get everywhere when you unpackaged a package and they frustrate buyers
I dislike peanuts as well, but a few in the bottom aren't that big of a bother. It's when the entire thing is full of them and they stick to everything.
Please stop calling comics Holy because they are not.
Sorry, didn't mean to offend. But it is common to use that word with collectibles. It's a term people use in any hobby to refer to something that gives something of a religious experience when obtained.. it's something uplifting in their lives, so I have nothing against using it. Regardless, I'll try to just use "Grail" from now on.. but no promises, I am human. :)
