I am one of those grateful people who watches the entire walk along the edge because I know it is the ONLY way I will ever experience it as I have an extremely healthy terror of heights and sheer drops. I love fell walking, I love the exhilaration of getting to the top and being rewarded with views for days. But only on nice paths that don’t offer instant death on either side.
Incredibly useful for those of us hesitating to try Striding Edge for the first time - thank you so much. 🙂 And no need at all to apologise for the breathing and grunting. It’s hard work up there! 😂
Hi , the filming is so crisp and clear , done Striding edge several times now. Always great fun , my photo here is top of Helvellyn looking to Striding Edge doing coast to coast in 2016.
That section just down from the summit and the standpoint is a mind-blowingly breathtaking view to behold just before you climb down to Striding Edge it's all breathtaking for words. Absolutely incredible camera work and Nrration, you captured this beautifully. I commend you, sir. Thank you so much. Love this channel with a passion and dealy look forward to every newly uploaded video. Words cant express how much I absolutely love and adore the lake district and my obsession with the mountains... 👍👍👍
For anyone planning a first trip along the edges that should be essential viewing. The loose rock bit reminded me (as if I could forget) of grabbing a rock on Sharp Edge which promptly came away in my hand. At least Birkhouse Moor has a good view. I suspect we won't hear the 'gorgeous' word when you get to Mungrisdale Common! Seriously though your work is not just instructional it is elevated to brilliant by your engaging and friendly disposition.
Those pictures are breathtaking. As someone with a healthy fear of falling, this had me on edge; however, the pictures and experience are worthwhile. Thank you for sharing.
Well Glen, you are the first person to mention the memorial on Striding Edge, I only knew about it from Wainwrights Eastern fell book.. so glad you mentioned it.. great walk by the way.. ive walked it several times.. thx for the memories.. ATB from Ontario Canada TC 👍🙏
Hello Glenn. I've been enjoying a couple of your videos. You've done a fantastic job. The video quality is excellent, audio too. I'm assuming that's the GoPro 10 and Rode mic? I just got the 11 and I'm thinking about the media mod. May I offer a bit of advice? I've a hairstyle like your own! :D Always, always, ALWAYS wear a cap, even when it's overcast. I have actinic keratosis. Not the end of the world but caused decades ago through not having my head covered.
All respect for you for being able to walk this. I doubt I'd ever be able myself because of my fear of heights. Where I walk in the Shropshire Hills isn't too bad but does have its moments where I've been wobbly. The one hill called the Lawley is ' only ' 300 ' mtrs but is a Ridge I'm kinda fearful off, but it's on my list of hikes to do
You have to be the modern day equivelent to AW. I cant get to the fells as much as i want so a video will do. There nicely made and easy to watch. Do the BBC know what your upto. 💥👍
Hi, sorry I'm a little late to your channel but wanted to say what an amazing set of vlogs! I have done some of the smaller hikes in the past on holidays but these have made me want to go back and do some of the larger ones! All the best Patrick.
Isn't the summit of Birkhouse Moor halfway along the ridge by the wall at 718m? The cairn you showed at the end of the ridge, known as the North Top, is only 700m, hence why it's seldom visited.
I loved your comment about the 3rd arm, lol. I live in Western South Dakota, USA, which is cowboy country. I'm a pretty self sufficient woman and was installing new wiper blades on my van on a snowy day, when a cowboy came up to me, shoved me out of the way and installed the blades for me. Later, I was telling my sister about "the stupid cowboy" and then commented about why we don't have 4 arms and she said "its so we learn to accept help from stupid cowboys". Lol. What a burn.
My partner an I (59F, 62M) 'ummed and ahhed' about whether we should attempt Striding Edge and/or Swirral, but decided instead to assend Helvelyn via Dolly Wagon Pike and descend via White Side and Glenridding Common (we were staying in Patterfdale) - that is a 14mile route but a lot safer! Too old for risk now!
If you enjoy scrambling you should really check out Sinister and Dexter Gully on Glyder Fawr Snowdonia. You get to do the awesome scramble that is tryfan north ridge and down the south side and then up glyder fawr via Sinister and Dexter Gully. Ridiculous exposure, a grade 3 scramble with no escape routes but not too difficult. Look it up brilliant scramble routes. I've been up and and it's amazing. One for a future vlog or just a trip to treat yourself to something different. Great vlog 👍🏼 as ever and a great route. Was good to see it in reverse
For some reason I couldn't get this to open when it first posted, hence the late comment. Superb section on the Edge itself, I lacked that final bit of courage to do that instead of the path. I'm not going to challenge your opinion on Birkhouse Moor but it was on its summit, and then all the way to Catstycam that I chatted to this elderly walker. something he said on Catstycam made me wonder and I got confirmation from his next Guardian Country Diary, that I'd been talking to Harry Griffin. Miss his Country Diary so much.
Great footage of the ridge itself. Excellent. As an aside, I'm not sure that cairn there is the true summit of Birkhouse Moor. I think it's some distance before in the direction you'd come from. As you say though, a great view, and be why Wainwright included it.
I’ve done it a lot of times but I always go the opposite direction. It’s nice on a dry day in a pair of sticky approach shoes rather than heavy old boots. You definitely need a head for heights.
Hope you don’t mind me saying Glenn that you’re looking fit and in a great place. Really good you see you buzzing on these films; there’s a load of doom and gloom out there atm so films like these are a wonderful distraction.
As per mate loved it. Really liked how you gave the VR view for others. I fell in love with the H (like that 😂) on a snow covered spring morning, got some great pics. Can’t wait to get the little fella up here and along the edges but he’s a few years off yet. Looking forward to the next ones. Stay blessed mate.
Great video again, glen i strugle up there. But its a great place to be. Love these videos and commentry. Rave on .looking forward to next one with finn
always liked Birkhouse Moor, as i first climbed it to do the Helvellyn horseshoe. The views climbing up to it of Ullswater are to die for. Climbed directly up from Glenriding.
Top one that brilliant. I make regular trips to the Lakes only living about 1.50 hours away but it’s the only one of the big peaks I have yet to do. When in the venture scouts many moons ago we had to turn back due to bad weather and I have not returned to this area since. I must do so.
Great way to film the Helvellyn edges, if anyone hasn't done them before they should definitely watch this video first 👌 top class stuff, very informative. Not done it anti-clockwise yet either so will definitely be giving that a go
Well done on your new series on walking the wainwright's, great information and very enjoyable. These will be go to videos for many people hiking in the lakes.
Great, really enjoying this Wainwright series and this was the best film I've seen of what is involved in tackling The Edges. Also very much enjoyed seeing the still at the end, great pics. One thought. I suspect many people watching this Wainright's series, like me know about the Wainright's, but don't necessarily know all 214, so a quick tick off at the start or the end of what you've done would help viewers keep track as you progress, either on that particular walk or as a running total.
Wainwright picked Birkhouse moor as one of his 214 due to the view of helvellyn from there, most of ones he picked was for the views from them, that’s why there is a few strange ones in it. Brilliant video love the edge 👌
I really thought you were a gonner! Fabulous way you are doing these vids!! This is the most realistic footage i have seen of Striding Edge! Shows it for what it is. Well done!
Another fantastic episode and doing it in two parts definitely did both ridges justice. I did the edges for the first time at Christmas on a crisp winters day it was to date the best days hike I’ve been on. It took me so long to get across Striding edge due to the amount of photos I ended up taking 😃 absolutely loved it. I’m going to show this to my eldest because you capture it perfectly and I think it would convince her to come across with me. Also the floopy feet I can relate too, I had them last week coming down Ben Nevis, I got almost down to the bottom and went over on my ankle on the smallest of steps, just goes to show what fatigue can do to you. Looking forward to the next instalment. 👌🏼
Really helpful to see the whole route across both edges - something I've not seen on a video before, so thanks for including that. I've not yet plucked up courage to do either, although I've been fellwalking for 30 years. I think the climb down the chimney at the end of Striding Edge would defeat me but might be able to manage 'up', so it was especially good to see you film it that way round. Great channel and superb idea to do the Wainwrights. I've still got about 20 to go.
Thanks very much 😊 you could always walk along Striding Edge until the chimney and turn back. Nothing wrong with that and you get more time on the edge 👌
Both videos are excellent. The route you took upto Catsycam looked really great. Even though i have been over the edges a few times your video was so interesting. Thanks! Look forward to the next one.
Great to see you survived the cliffhanger ending of part 1 Glenn. Really enjoyed part 2. Cannot believe how incredibly busy it was on the edge...dont think I have been across before and not seen anyone, even when it was snowing once! Thanks again for another enjoyable video.
Loved it Glenn but you should have stayed on the higher ground after leaving High Spying How until you get back to Hole-in-the- Wall rather than use the path, it's more interesting and you get better views IMHO.
Looks excellent weather, when I’ve done it it’s always blowing a gale, great you’ve got it to yourself i normally do it very early. As you say your video shows a true reflection of what it’s like, thank you 👍👍🏔
Thanks very much 😊 it was surprising to not bump into a single person. But it was late in the day so most people are at least 2 pints deep at that point 😊🍻
Great Vid, how many wainwrights can you do on the route? 3 (Birkhouse Moore, Hellvellyn & Castycam) ? or do you know if there is an option to fit another one if you change your route slightly without going too far. Thanks
I think Helvellyn is probably the greatest mountain to take on in the lakes..that's just my opinion 🤷 but going over striding edge is terrific 👌 I didn't know wether you would start the vlog from the a&e 😆but fortunately you were still in 1 piece 😀 really enjoy the vlog..keep em coming please 🙏
Thank you 😊 I just like going the opposite way to all the traffic. There was none that day but normally you're surrounded by people. The most problematic section is on Striding Edge called the chimney but it's very easy if you just take your time.
In case you missed part 1: ruclips.net/video/9l3_u9XncJw/видео.html
I am one of those grateful people who watches the entire walk along the edge because I know it is the ONLY way I will ever experience it as I have an extremely healthy terror of heights and sheer drops. I love fell walking, I love the exhilaration of getting to the top and being rewarded with views for days. But only on nice paths that don’t offer instant death on either side.
Great video 👏 and I'm glad you said it! Some Wainwrights I'm like "Why?! What is the point of this... This is so uninteresting!" 😂
Unfortunately, I am getting too old for those kind of hikes which I miss terribly. Thank you for having me along on your hike vicariously.
Glenn, 24.37 was Mother Nature reminding you, she is not "boring" in her designs *smiles* Part 1 and Part 2, absolutely beautiful. Thank you.
😂 You're absolutely right.... Instant karma! Thank you very much 😊
Incredibly useful for those of us hesitating to try Striding Edge for the first time - thank you so much. 🙂 And no need at all to apologise for the breathing and grunting. It’s hard work up there! 😂
Been up and after a short bit bailed out on to the lower path, poor sense of balance and a huge desire to remain above the grass ! 👍😀
Just binged 1-5 the last two evenings. Love the vlogs, love the scenery, love all the info. In a nutshell just love it 👌👍🙌👏
Why would we want to mute you mate your oratory is a massive part of the black crag experience trust me.Keep it going please.Fandabbydozy.
This is the best crossing of the edges I have seen, most graphic most detailed I could have been there….again.
Thanks very much, glad you liked it 😊
I was absolutely bricking it just watching this! Stunning views. Thanks for this - it was great!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 😊

All I can say is you’ve got a lot better head for heights/exposure than I do. Great filming Glenn 👍🏻
Another great VLOG. At my age you won't get me going near that ridge :)
Those pictures are breathtaking. As someone with a healthy fear of falling, this had me on edge; however, the pictures and experience are worthwhile. Thank you for sharing.
Great video, I could never be as brave as you though
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 😊
My friend (who has done this 2-3 times) wants me to join in doing this. It looks terrifying! haha
Enjoyed Helvellyn and the Edges, both parts. I guess I will watch more in the future. Good luck with the series.
Thank you 😊
I love striding edge, we did it many times over the years. It was fantastic doing it again with you. Thank you.
Who knew that England had such impressive peaks. Love it.
Like I said, if you're ever over this way I'd love to have you along on a video, take you to some amazing places 👍
@@BlackCrag One day mate. one day.
Imagine if Striding edge was wet. Mt Washington in New Hampshire have steeps like this but no cliffs on both sides. Nice hike.
Awesome trek glenn thank you for sharing it 👌🏻
This is so fricking scary. I dunno how much more I can watch 😬
I’ve got my syrup and blueberry’s ready for the waffle! I’m here for it

NO NO NO! YES YES YES to the video and this series 🤣👍 part of that I actually got sick in my mouth 🤢 looking forward to a whole more. Sithee!
Haha 😂 next time, you're coming with, young man! Thanks mate 😊
@@BlackCrag slip sent my head, but I thought if you’d of died I can’t be watching the video lol. Love these Glen! And no I won’t be doing it lol 😂

Loved the walk Glen, loved your enthusiasm, but most of all loved how you manage to capture the essence of the fells with your photography. Thanks
Thank you so much, really appreciate that 😊 🙏
Thank you, I now know, as I long suspected, I will never be able to do Striding Edge so I can stop dreaming ;-)
All respect for you for being able to walk this. I doubt I'd ever be able myself because of my fear of heights. just NO WAY!!! on that downward ridge, just NOOOOO WAY😬😬😬
Enjoyable to watch but made me feel a bit queasy! Stunning scenery.
Fabulous channel. I’m really enjoying watching your adventures.
Great to have an ending to that cliff hanger! Brilliant video as usual👍
One of the better Helvellyn videos. 👍
Thank you, appreciate it 😊

😂 Thanks very much 🙌 The BBC don't give a rat's ass 😂
Excellent mini-series Glenn. Giving the walk 2 parts really allowed the breathing space it deserved! Time though, for those shoes to be binned!
Thanks very much 😊 you're probably right.... But I think they've got 1 more walk left in them 😂
