Striding edge is one of Britains best known ridge walks and it is on many hill walkers list. But do you wonder if you have the skills to tackle it?
In this video Fellmandave takes you through some key skills to help build your ability and confidence to tackle this famous Grade 1 Scramble.
Fellmandave as well as being an experienced mountain walker, also has decades of experience working in Gait Analysis, the science that treats peoples walking and movement issues.
Here are the tips:
1. You don’t have to be SUPER HIKER
2. Just make each step a good one
3. Practice slow precise gait (dog joining in optional)
4. 30% tummy /core/ pelvis tuck- Put some air in the tires
5. Practice on easy but narrow terrain
6. Practice on other rocky walks that is not a graded scramble
7. Maintain good posture-up and down
8. Start early!
9. Plan your route and options including weather
10. Practice good trekking pole technique- including quick stowage
11. Tread quietly
12. Read the accident reports in Mountain rescue and learn from them
13. Let the rock come to you
14. Polished rock is slippery when wet
15. Face in to descend, lean out on good holds (check for looseness first)
16. Edges, ledges and wedges
17. The last bit looks worse than it is - like most scrambles!
18. Enjoy with like minded companions
19. Check weather and equipment before setting out
20. Take someone experienced or book a professional

I am raising funds to buy an emergency beacon to help keep myself and the youngsters including Scouts I take out safe. Thanks! www.buymeacoffee.com/fellmandave

Excellent stuff mate ... donated ... may I suggest you do a separate video for it? ... I'm sure you'll raise it quickly 😉 ... Mick Fitzpatrick
@@mickfitzvalleyandhill thanks Mick. Good suggestion , will have a think about it.
I did it for the first time and I'm pretty scared of heights. I found it less scary being high up close to the rocks as opposed to being more exposed on the path. There was always a lot to grab onto so I always felt relatively safe. I would definitely recommend it.
well done Josh!
Great advice Dave. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video, you've definitely alleviated some of the fears I had toward doing this for the first time.
excellent!
I've never seen anyone break down scrambling so well, and I myself have a ML so have met a lot of instructors, well done. Subscribed.
Cheers!
Great video, thanks. Helvellyn via Striding Edge for the first time in two days.
Going doing this tomorrow and this has alleviated a lot of worries I had about it
Great stuff, Matthew. Come back and tell me how it was!
Just got home from it. Did it all across the top, climbing down the sides at times and ended up going down swirral edge. Went off route a couple of times as confidence grew and was INSANE!!!
@@matthewstant9945 ACE!
What a wonderful teaching video. Thank you.
Too kind once more Imran. Thanks for your support.🤩
This is a really good upload Dave ,preparing people both physically and mentally for this -very sound advise.
Thanks Jon, that's appreciated.
Great video, Dave. Lots of really helpful advice👍
Cheers Benny. Thanks for commenting. Glad you found it useful.
Excellent video and some well considered teaching points with regards to safety. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I made my first trip to the Lake District this summer with a friend, wow!!!! Fantastic!!! I will climb Scarfell and complete the Striding Edge next year! Can't wait! Love & respect brother! 🙏
Glad you 'got it' with the lakes. Enjoy, my friend.
It’s the most beautiful part of England and that is saying something been there 4 or 5 times just came back in October. Not done anything as strenuous as Striding Edge. Did go on a few hikes to waterfalls including a six mile round hike to Stanley Ghyll absolutely (stunning place) in typical Lakes weather strong winds, rain and thick mist.
Since coming back home to Kent I have been totally bitten by the hiking bug and been out and about finding what you could call practice hikes for when I get back to The Lakes.
I love these videos and yours is certainly among the most informative cheers
Another great video Dave. I just watched it and enjoyed being reminded. I have clients booked on this over the summer so you just reminded me of everything !!!
Thanks Nicola, I am jealous you having clients. If I am over there and you want an extra pair if hands let me know. It would be great to have the experience of dealing with live clients and not just Scouts and family.
I'm doing striding edge with my 10yr old son and my wife for the 1st time on Saturday, a little nervous/excited of what to expect, we have scrambled before (devils kitchen) but its not as exposed as striding edge, fantastic video 👌
Let us know how you get on Andy. Long term forecast looks good!
How did it go andy?
@@liamsnurse8261 It's likely we will never know 😂
Probably!
Thank you ❤ for the great advice I’ll be doing this ridge this summer fingers crossed nice video
Enjoy!
Great video and nice to see those Scarpa Ribelles get a workout. I don't live in the UK so I've only done this route once and I think your video will be very helpful for those thinking of having a go at Striding Edge.
Cheers buddy, it's appreciated you tak8ng the time to comment. The Ribelles are itching for another trip out!
Excellent conditions Dave. Some interesting technical info too. 🙂
Cheers Chris, thanks for watching!
Thank you!
You are most welcome!
Great video. Really helpful advice.
Thanks!
@@Fellmandave1 this is how to be mindful.
I work as a mental health nurse; I will recommend the quite walking to people who find being in public spaces anxiety provoking.
Useful introduction also for people new to Lakeland walking.
Nice little Video Dave. Good to meet you. I’ll make sure to add a coffee to my bill. Thanks 👍🏻
Hey Paul. You absolutely flew over the ridge. I take it that it was all good? Thanks for appearing!
Great great video, thanks. Going to do this for the first time in august. I've done Crib Goch and loved it. Although I just held on the whole time. So im a little bit more scared of this one where there is just walking
this will be a breeze compared to Crib Goch Rory, enjoy!
Nice informative video and nice expletive on the way down from the last tower 😂
well spotted Neil. I think was when I realised I had missed a shot/ angle and would have to go back up again to film for the third time!
Excellent Dave👍
Cheers buddy. Any new watches?
@@Fellmandave1
Strangely enough, I've sold three !!
Was that the sound of you collapsing on the floor shock 😂😂
@@CityBoy5705 cant be true! Hahahha, buying 5 more to replace no doubt
Good advice David! I've done this scramble in all weathers and observed lots of people poorly equiped/prepared.
You are never poorly prepared in orange boots and blue trousers David.
Great advice ... nice one 👌 ... Mick Fitzpatrick
Cheers Mick!
I did this for the first time in 1964 from Patterdale Hall and my goal is to do it again in September 2023 wish me luck ,
Good luck Mark and enjoy!
Loved it… but did find the shoulder up to the top a little tricky with the wind picking up out of no where 😂
Nice one!
Lots of great advice, but still a little too close to the edge for me...my legs are shaking just watching! lol Some pretty amazing views though! Thanks for sharing the adventure...Bruce and Otis
Hi Bruce! Good to hear from you. The wide angle makes it look worse than it is. But dogs frequently get stuck in the chimney at the end so maybe not for Otis.
Some good advice I've done it a few times mostly with my wild camping kit so more weight.ive spoke to lots of people who are doing Helvellyn for the 1st time they are all nervous.the biggest thing is the weather conditions if it's not suitable don't do it I say to them either take the bypass just off the ridge or leave the ridges and go via Whiteside but that's if your goal is to just do the summit
Excellent advice Craig. Its the wind eh?
Thanks for your contribution once more. F
@@Fellmandave1 yes the wind is the main thing especially with a bigger pack also the wet on the well used rock makes it slippy but in good conditions it's ok as long as they take there time like you say 1 good step after another
Thanks for the video! It was super informative, and the views were breathing. I was on Mount Hellvelyn last month, but turned around right before Striding Edge because I started the hike too late in the day. I plan on hiking Striding Edge next month. What kind of equipment did you use for the video. I would like to video my hike and post it on RUclips.
Glad you enjoyed it! i use a go pro hero 8 black
Some really useful hints and tips Dave, nice one ☺️
Ps.......sell me the Kuiu 😂
Thanks Buddy. Ps.........no
@@Fellmandave1 🤣🤣
Very informative video, Thanks Dave. Btw, what did you bring for breakfast? 😊
Thanks Mark. You know mate, I really can't remember! Possibly trail mix, banana or an extra sandwich. Thanks for commenting.
Hi Dave, nice informative video. I really want to do the striding edge but lack confidence. I am worried about freezing with fear and not moving forward or returning.... I like the idea of doing other easier scramblers. bty what shoes are you wearing? They look good. I am looking for a good pair of hiking shoes.
Hi PoE. Thank you for your support. The boots are Scarpa ribelle lite HD. Excellent though not for cold weather imo. See my other video on them.
I'm doing it for the first time sometime this year.
Nervous already!
My video supposed to be soothing all those jitters away! I mean if I can do it........
Where did you get the chase bag you have from? And does it connect to your Montane Trailblazer back pack?
Chest bag? Yes it would . Helikon I think is mine. Bought off a mate.
ah yes, sorry for the typo @@Fellmandave1. Thanks for the reply, I will have a look at getting one
Did this yesterday with my 15 yo son. The biggest problem for him was the slog up from Glenridding. The scrambling was fine. Swirral Edge also fun.
Were your knees hurting at 14:53 ? 😂
