I had an Echoplex and this sounds about right, the echoes would usually be distorted the older the tape got! haha!!!!
The early albums by Brian May, Van Halen and Randy Rhoads used these also.

Yes the programming team needs to repurpose the marketing team to go outside and wax the programming team's cars. By hand, with paste wax.

It sound great, i know for sure, i use the Fulltone TTE but they are very similar more top end on the hardware and open distortion (less muddy when doing specials FX´s), bravo for the idea at the end of the mix it can work very well

Nigel Godrich and Radiohead are all over the Echoplex. Nice emulation.

Thanks very much for your detailed response. I am mixed up about these machines. I thought that the EP-34 Tape Echo plug-in was a machine like the echo-plex. It looks more like it's something you download from the computer, instead. Is that right, or is it actually a machine like the echo plex? Regarding the delay that I mentioned, I just want to be able to say a word, alone, like "Danger" and "Stranger", and be able to hear that one word repeated like an echo, repeating it as it fades out.

I bought this recently and was disappointed that it didn't have a stereo mode, I know I can run two of them panned to both sides but still. Hugely missed opportunity to have a stereo mode.

How do you think this unit compares with the Line 6's EP-1 and EP-3 emulation. They both sound great to me.

Hi. Maybe you can help me? I am not on top of the plug ins,as I'm a percussionist/drummer ( I am trying to learn as much about them though) and wanted to ask someone who might know about them. I need a long delay so that I can belt out a word like, e.g. "STRANGER" and hear the whole word repeated in echo form. Do any of the plug ins or pedals feature long delay that would do this? I'm desperate. Thanks so much.

I'm floored that UA does not offer MIDI control of plugin parameters. (Sarcasm alert): I can't wait to buy a UA system and this plugin, then perform spacey regeneration effects in front of an audience by leaning over my computer and manipulating the mouse or trackpad. Who needs those silly expression pedals so many musicians use? Sad that they put all of the R&D into creating the only accurate Echoplex emulator in existence (especially regarding the behavior of the sliding record head), then left it impossible to control in real time via MIDI. Same for plugins like the Moog filters. Why grab a knob on your keyboard controller to easily adjust a resonant filter center frequency, when you can manipulate a f%cking mouse? Mindblowing. Absolutely mindblowing. Even freeware plugins from other companies offer MIDI control. UA seriously dropped the ball when they blew off MIDI.

Pretty remarkable emulation all things considered.

Like the plugin, but the wow and flutter are excessive for certain applications. I really wish the amount was user-adjustable. Having a shorter delay time than the original would be great as well, along with a single band parametric eq in the feedback loop.

(Cont.) If you will type in Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Karn Evil 9 (3rd Impression) and at 2:15 into the song, you will hear the word "Stranger"! spoken through a ring modulator and an echoplex, and this is what I am looking to do. Thanks ever so much.

I'm just a noob. I wanted to buy the plug-in but not interested in having to buy another piece of hardware (UAD-2). Anyone know of a tape echo plug-in by another company that doesn't require hardware?

Galaxy Tape Echo is available natively and doesn't require hardware: www.uaudio.com/uad-plugins/delay-modulation/galaxy-tape-echo.html

You can recreate this in Ableton by using a delay plugin (right click reset to repitch) change delay to time (ms) or keep default to sync to tempo. Press link to go thru left and right. unlink to choose the echo to pan left or right. Add an EQ Three (Hi, Mid, Low) to control to Hi and Low tones. Play with the ms time, and there you go. Free makeshift Tape Echo Delay that you can run thru a send. If you want the distortion/warmth that comes with the tape aging, add a saturator plugin and turn up the drive a little bit.

I wonder how good many of these plug-ins would "sound" if it was just a white screen with black numbers you'd have to input. No graphics to fool you.

Why can’t this be controlled with midi? Ridiculous

It can, in any DAW that supports MIDI mapping.

When you said, "This is best listened to on headphones," I decided not buy it. I really hate vacant jive marketing. I am surprised UAD would allow some hype jive instead of engineering content. It is shameful and you just took the industry down a notch. Please go sell soap or do some kind of other marketing because you really have no clue about pro audio. I thought the UAD plugins + $1000. processing card was strictly for pro market. Personally I will not stand the dilution and marketing demonstrated in this video presentation. Yes I have $30,000. monitors so some half wit who could care less about pro audio to tell me to use headphones.
