- Vintage Tape Delay - Jon Burton, who is slightly obsessed with delay units, happily dismantles his lovely Roland RE-301 Chorus Echo to shows us the wonderful magnetic tape insides. For those of you who were born in the digital age, check this out! Jon even has to set the tempo by ear rather than entering a number into DAW software. You can really play with it creatively and have a bit of a laugh at the same time... He demonstrates using it on drums, guitar and vocals using music from Serbian band, Rakila. Hours of fun to be had from this machine... And as you would expect from Jon, he also has some big speakers!

I used to have a 301 back in the 80’s
It is an amazing machine/instrument
Very nice, comprehensive review. Thanks.
“There’s a lot to be said for moving a knob“. Words to live by.
pan left and right that you cant even hear in this video? cool awesome
beautiful!!!
Awesome 😎
Thanks so much, great in depth hands on review! I borrowed a RE-201 to mix my bands latest album and now really want to get one... or even better the RE-301 with that sweet chorus sound! and will probably never go back to digital effects! :)
Right, it's a different world. Almost like vinyls compared to cds or even digital formats.
Magical
What a machine
The 301 has chorus! Otherwise they are much the same. The only really different one in the range was the 555 I think which was rack-mountable and had xlr inputs. All work on the same principle. I like the 301 as the chorus feature is nice on guitars and keys.
That is an instrument
How does the chorus oscillation work? Are you limited to the delay controls, or can you set them for different times?
The chorus is I believe the same circuitry as the original chorus pedal so doesn't use the tape at all but a BBD to make a short delay and an a oscillator. The delay time is set using a combination of playback head and tape speed. The slower the motor the longer the delay. The sound quality as always with tape gets worse at slower speeds and more noisy.
I just got one of these at a local thrift store for $15 in mint condition
I don’t believe you lol
