HUGE shoutout to SOLO Guitars for helping me make this DIY guitar project happen: www.solomusicgear.com/
hello
@@bardanmusic4910 hi
sir i love your giutar playing style
i am also a small singer and i have made a new channel named Bardan Music
i have covered circles by post malone and i learned the giutar playing by you only
Hi marty don't feel bad or anything, Mr. Leo Fender never knew how to play guitar when he was making fender strats and teles, so one of the most famous brand of guitars the owner really never knew yow you play guitar so its ok yo not know how to put a guitar together, Hope you have a amazing time plaing with that guitar and seeing it in more future videos thank you for everything you do for us
Lol Marty looks like us when we're trying to follow him on guitar
"Smells Like Guitar Spirit" Nice job Marty, build me one.
Yes e too. Not like your working just jamming all day😂. Lol (sarcasm!)
Kit guitars are like drugs. Now you have one, you need two. Eventually you will want to make your own.
Yeah 😆
The addiction is real!
but drugs cost less
The sniff test...always important...wether it be a guitar build or questionable sox...
If that sock ain’t flexing I ain’t sniffing it
Marty, we electrical engineers have a saying: the very best electrical connection you can make is a good soldering joint, and the very worst electrical connection you can make is a bad soldering joint. Soldering is definitely a skill, if not a bit of an art.
Sorry but The very best connection is a gold plated crimp connection as there is a large amount of tin in solder adding resistance. And yes I am a qualified electrical engineer.
@@voodooo69 Hold on, sir.
😎 How do you define "good"? Strictly resistance? Longevity/maintainability? Gold may be better long-term, but silver can definitely surpass gold in the short-term. Also, just messing with you.
If you're new to soldering, you need to learn that the soldered joint must never be moved when the liquified solder is solidifying, or otherwise blown on in an attempt to speed cooling of the joint, otherwise an inferior joint known as a "cold" solder joint will result and it's easily identified with a dull, gray appearance rather than a shiny, chrome-like appearance which is a good solder joint.
This is the best way to learn how to build and fix a guitar. The experience of building a guitar from a kit , making mistakes and learning how to fix them is worth it. Plus you get a unique guitar.
I tried to make one and threw the whole thing in the trash. I gave up. The directions that the kit I got came with didn't help me at all. And the finish I applied made it hideous. Good chunk of money wasted
@@Madchris8828 Everyone has different skills, and I'm not trying to be mean to you. Just honest. You chose not to learn by quitting instead of fixing it. When you make mistakes and fix them you learn from that experience. Giving up is the easy way out.
@@The-11 it was actually partially because of space (running out of) and I get what you mean to an extent. I wish I had kept it. And tried again. I'll try my next kit from Solo probably. The soldering is what really confused me badly, as I've got very little experience with working with those kind of electronics
@@Madchris8828 Definitely try again, the way I learned to solder is by doing and making mistakes/ burning myself. Lol Then you get it right.
It is so strange to see you uncomfortable with anything guitar related. It is the wiring and soldering that intimidates me the most. Good to have someone with experience to walk you through it.
Soldering scared me most as first too! Now done two kit guitars and about to begin my third and the soldering is actually one of my favourite parts!! You can check out my build progress shots of all mine on instagram if you like. instagram.com/lundy1987
I took my Strat to where I bought it to get the buzz out and after $150 bucks the buzz was just more quiet!!
The owner says,
“It’s a Strat, it’s SUPPOSED to buzz a little.”
(Fret Buzz NOT 60 Cycle Hum...)
I decided THAT moment NO one is touching my guitars again!
Using RUclips I learned how to Solder, level the frets all the way to wiring and rebuilding.
Now I build my OWN guitars to MY taste!
Go for it Bro, there’s nothing you CAN do that can’t be fixed!
I tried superglue. It works. But don't tell anyone.
Marty I built a guitar with my grandpa it was the best time of my life I learn soldering and how to use a router Hope you had a great time and rock on
So awesome to see something like this! Learning to modify or build a guitar sounds so fun and satisfying!
The marty hendrix telecaster?
"Butterscotch tele, ok?"
I died.
Good job Marty! I just did my own upgrade and soldered for the first time too. I added a Seymour JB humbucker to my Strat bridge with the Seymour quarter pound SSL in the neck. Now it growls. It’s so easy you’ll wanna customize all your axes.
Reminds me of Burls Art. He makes his own guitars out of crazy things and they look way cool
I've been watching your videos since early high school. Been playing since 2010 and your were there every step of the way. Thank you Marty and everything you do. Music is the next greatest gift to life.
Amazing that was you’re first time soldering!! I still can’t solder well and I’ve been doing it for years good job buddy
Solo! Nice choice Marty! Made in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada not too far from where I live! I made one of their Gretch white falcon type kits a few years ago. Super fun a cool experience. Hope you enjoy it Marty!
Awesome job Marty. Thank you for helping me play lead after just playing chords after almost 50 years. Btw, I like doing the sniff test myself.
Great video! Yeah, that artwork is phenomenal ! Great job Jay...and Marty! Very cool!
Great job Marty live your choice of design
Love your guitar you did. Really like the paint job and design job on it. Have been thinking about making my own guitar and have a few pictures on the front of it of my blood brother and I when we used to play together in memory of him I think that would be neat. You inspired me to do it thank you for your video
Thank you!!
This was great! Entertaining, inspiring and informative. Thanks Marty!
I built a T style kit from stewmac. It turned out really good I play it every day. One note. After buying all the finishing stuff the real fender hardware pickups ect. I could have bought a fender. I could not go with the hardware that came with the kit. The guitar is excellent though
have fun Marty.
kit builds are great for learning new skills, and how to set up, and maintain your own guitars.
Great job! I just finish my Tele kit from Solo. Will do it again!
This is really cool. Normally, we go to you as the expert to learn new things, but it was kind of fun to see you looking a little puzzled and asking questions. You did great. Thanks for sharing that with us.
That Guitar looks sick af!!
Them sniffs though XD
Thanks !
@@jayalders You sir have a lot of talent :)
Cheers!
This is a really cool video, I've always wanted to build my own!
Very cool Marty! Really enjoyed this video :)
It seemed like you had a lot of fun with it :D
Nice job Marty!! That's some sick artwork on there as well 👍
Love the down to earth attitude you have. I think I might try to do a tele or strat in a camo paint scheme.. thanks Marty.
Marty, thanks for taking on this challenge of building your own guitar and for sharing it with your viewers!
Looks like you spent a lot of time and effort on this video really cool keep them coming Marty!
MARTY! BROO!! This is super cool man!! I'm a pretty consistent watcher of your RUclips guitar lessons and you've taught me a ton of great blues stuff. In the spirit of not taking without giving i will most likely be dropping some money on the website for a lessons package as well. But i am also an avid DIY woodworking guy and It's super cool that i run into you yet again as I'm lookin up stuff on building my own guitar as this is my next project! Rock on man i appreciate what you're doing Marty Music is seriously the bomb. Thank you for everything you're doing it's super clutch man especially during the pandemic!!
Zack
Just as long as you don’t over-tighten anything it’ll turn out great 🤙
Good luck in your endeavor Marty!
ur the best to ever do it marty. thank u for teaching me everything i know
Marty, you inspire me to do a lot of great things but now you're inspiring me to spend more of my money.... I want to make a guitar now. I also think I'm going to buy one of your coffee mugs for my uncle. He's the one who showed me your stuff. Keep up the great work man.
Nice guitar man
You are the best teacher i have ever got thank you marty
Awesome guitar and video. I love the comment “ it’s like Lego” Rock on Marty 👊
I literally wrote "build a DIY kit with 0 experience" and this came out.
Greetings from Paraguay!!
I love that guitar design, super badass
Thanks!!!
Nice video to show the electronics soldering isn't as bad as some would seem, but it may be the simplicity of the telecaster. You like me hire out any work you are not crazy about doing yourself especially to the experienced you have faith in. Great video. I am thinking on a guitar project myself and need to ponder on the refinishing. I could do a camo guitar and have confidence in myself or go pre finished. However after researching Solo seems to be the place to go for a DIY guitar kit.
LOVE THE BUILD AND SNIFF TEST, really love the paint , I have 2 solo projects giong for x-mas gifts
Jay Alders is going to make that DIY Guitar a piece of art that will hang on your wall! Awesome Marty! Also, thanks for all the lessons! You rule.
Thank you!!
Paint job is absolutely sic! awesome
Thank you!!
How satisfying it must be to build it yourself, then rock on it! Awesome!!
Man that's so cool 🤘I'd love to build one some day I think a classic gretsch style hollow body would be sweet or 335 kind of style
About three years ago I built a replica Fender Stratocaster custom. I made it individual parts I had purchased from Fender over time. I'm a wood worker as well as an electrician. So I had an advantage throughout. I took my time and built all over three months. That includes the time I used to airbrush clear-coat lacquer on the body and back of the neck. I had like maybe 25 coats of clear lacquer on top of a natural wood grain finish. After a good buffing and polishing It looked as beautiful as it played. I took it to a nearby Guitar Center to let them verify everything was correct with all the settings. They added a .010" shim under the nut. There were several people wanting to know if Fender was selling those now. Some offered to buy mine from me.
Building a guitar is very addictive but a little more cost is involved now. It's a great hobby for someone that is retired/disabled. I'm itching to build another one while I'm able to physically get around. I'd like to build a Les Paul Custom next.
The interesting thing is that I really don't know how to play a guitar. I'm working self learning at this time.
Oh wow 🤩
Looks fab Marty...and an artist at hand, you lucky guy you!
Good on ya...looks 😎 pretty cool🎶🎸 👏 Well done 😜👍
WOW!
That paint job is WILD!!!!
I have this exact build on one of mine. I love aging on it as I built it to suit me
Hey Marty! I actually bought one of these kits and I would recommend getting some fender pickups and tuners. The one that I got didn't have very good tuners or pickups
Maybe in the future you can modify that same guitar by soldering in new pots, or pickups, or maybe one of those killswitch buttons that Tom Morello uses alot. Im doing that to my Telecaster right now, just waiting for the button in the mail. Its the easiest mod you could possibly do.
The reason I started playing guitar about 30 years ago was because I was the dude who would repair and maintain them for friends and ended up getting free lessons,
Saw the paint job on your giveaway vid, so I came looking for this video to hear it. It sounds as good as it looks!
Nicely done Marty... Got interested in Tellie's.
Wouldn’t mind more content like this👍
Nice build. I have built 2. A Tele and an SG with P90s. Gonna donate one though to my local DAV(Disabled American Veterans). Found out that they take donations of music instruments, gear or kits for the music therapy program which provides music lessons, musical instruments, and gear to veteran that can nor afford them. They even have workshops sometimes where you can build your own guitar(those usually fill up really quick and only happen a few times a year). As a disabled vet and music lover I know that these programs really help vets that have a wide variety of disabilities from their time in service. It would be nice to see more people donate music gear and instruments for their programs. Anyways sorry about the rant lol. Take care and stay safe!!!
Love the art work it very much resembles the wheels of fire album cover
I've been dying to do this too. I have most of a plan, but I've a little nervous about taking the plunge.
I want one of their Firebird kits ( but they are sold out). I learned to solder when I was a Slot Car Racer, LOL. Solder sometimes splatters so cover the body with an old towel.
Love your vids Marty and and I enjoy your lessons
Sweet guitar. Thank you for sharing Marty! BA
Wow. Those stock p’ups are pretty tight actually. Great vid Marty! If someone needs a good vid to learn how to solder, this vid is the one. Nice job bro!
Right on
Great stuff and excellent choice of model. The straight line and alignment of the strings all the way from the tuners all the way to the bridge ensures tuning stability. The more twist and turns the strings do the more sensitive the tuning will be. Which makes at least the Epiphone SG a shitty guitar all the way from the factory. I made some guitars from scrapwood. Shaping wood with angle grinder is just awesome. And if routing seems complicated u can buy a Forstner bit and put it on a cordless 18V drill. So that works for control cavities. U get a brutal guitar with loads of "battlescares". But that is a proper guitar made from scrapwood in my opinion. Thx for the video!
it will definetely be my Christmas present for me by me
I am new to electric guitars, but I am diving right in to modifying rather than building from scratch. Having recently purchased a used Squier Affinity Strat, I am building up a new pickguard assembly with all new parts. I am using the Freeway 10-way switch to allow for more combinations of the three single pickups, and I am replacing the volume pot with a concentric pot so that I can have a separate tone control for the bridge pickup. This necessitates ditching the typical strat knobs in exchange for knurled metal knobs. I am using inexpensive Alnico pickups and not messing with the trem right now due to budget constraints. I have also ordered a custom 44mm nut width neck, as the stock 42 is just too tight for my fat fingers. I have locking Gotoh tuners ready to install on the new neck. In the future I might do a T-style build from scratch, once I have the scratch to do it, at which point I will try my hand at finishing guitars.
Great looking guitar!!! Mahalo for the video!
Thanks!
Just WOW !!! Such an amazing design !!! I love it ;-)
Thank you very much!
Cool paint job man
Nice job, Marty. The body will let you put on a humbucking or a P90 for the neck pickup in the future. She’s good looking, too. Should’ve dropped the backdrop so you were working on the basement.
Great guitar build! Would be great seeing you use this in some of your tutorials!haha
Looks and Sounds Awesome! 🤘🔥
That guitar look’s sick !! 🤘🤘
Thanks!!
Hi Marty, just a suggestion. Put something protective under the piece your soldering to protect the guitar especially if your not used to soldering, also tin the wire ends will make better solder connections.
For Christmas, I want an open G-tuned, 5-string, telecaster-style, a-la-Keef guitar. I think I now know where I'll buy it from!
Hi Marty this is so awesome of an idea
Nice Job!
One little thing it's usually the bass string that does the buzzing if the action isn't right so you have the tool to check the string height go with whatever the bass string is and make sure that all the strings are at the same height just so you know your fingers don't get hung up on one that's too high or something like that and it should be golden as far as the radius goes you don't need one of those radius gauges all you need to do is make sure the strings are at the right Heights and there's your radius
Cool video Marty! How about thunderstruck solo???
This was so interresting! Well done to Mr.Scwartz and Mr. Alders
Thank you!!
Beautiful guitar!
Fantastic fun, I've just completed a Tele kit myself, it taught me so much about setup. Shame you dodged the best (and most difficult and time consuming) part, finishing the guitar!
Supper cool one off paint job
Thanks!
Hard to believe you never tried to build a guitar in 20 years. Nice job!
I won't mention the name of the kit guitar (it was NOT a Solo kit) I just finished but it was truly a POS but I ultimately proved you CAN make a silk purse out of a pigs ear. I won't knock guitar kits in general but I've always wondered if these companies send custom picked necks and bodies for those building them on RUclips compared to one that's bought by Joe Blow. I now am learning to build my own from scratch and it's quite the learning curve. Loved the video, as usual, and kudo's to the guy who painted it for you.
Ok, from one who has built a guitar, I think you mean you are assembling a guitar. I have done two.
The first is an SG with humbuckers and a strat style tremo from mahogany lumber stock. I cut it all out. It sounds great, sustain is off the charts. Necks are hard. I took the first neck to Mike Lull (RIP) and he said the neck was hopeless. I made another one. This one might be salvageable, the 12th and 14 frets are high, lots of buzz. I will never make another neck again without investing in equipment. I might convert this to a gibson conversion bolt on.
The second one is a Doug Fir Jazzmaster body with strat-style HSS pickups, Jazzmaster tremo and a Musikraft neck. It sounds really great and plays really good. I cut out the body, assembled, and wired, finished, etc. I hesitate to say I "built" that guitar as I did not make the neck. And I don't even play guitar, my son does. He designed/selected the pickups, bridge, tremo.
Sorry to be pedantic, and very congrats on your custom guitar assembly and finishing!
Good vid as usual marty ❤❤
I LOVE the SNIFF TEST best ever
Good stuff Marty
fun fact: the first guitar i built was a partstele with a p90 in the neck. such a killer riff machine. neck is a bit too big chungus for shredding.
I want it bad! Thx Marty
Sounds nice!
Holy Crap!!! When I first saw the guitar, it made me think of Bradley Nowell's dragon tattoo...then you go and mention Jay and Stoopid. SO AWESOME!!!
I've been lucky enough to hang out with Kyle, Miles, OG, Paul, and a few of the guys from Stoopid a couple times. Who is your "friend"?
That looks sweet🎸🤘
cool.. im thinking of building my own strat.. body from just a plank.. might order a neck depends how hard it is to build.
Wow marty we are all so proud of you
thanks ,I need one now
I like that you chose to build a tele style kit.
Sick dude
Damn 14 minutes for a heart that is a personal record
Great job Marty. How ironic can it be that I got a Tele kit as well. I'm planning on customizing it. Too bad we cant attach pictures here to the comments. I'm also make another guitar as well from a slab kit with my own design shape.
