When we sold my grandma's house, which had absolutely been a hub for our family for my entire life, I had to stop by and drop off a key that I found a week after closing. The last couple of years, the house had been so empty and quiet, which just felt wrong because there were ALWAYS people there. When I stopped in to drop off the key, there were a dozen people laughing in the kitchen, making dinner and playing games. It made me feel sooooo much better about losing touch with that house, because now I know that the house is full of joy and love again.

I had a very similar experience after selling my grandmothers home that had been where my aunts/uncles/mom grew up and congregated. When it was sold, my grandfather was in his 80's and needed someplace smaller and closer to family. A newlywed couple bought it. I was very pleased a year or so after it sold to drive by and see that there was a little swing set outside and a grill and that the garden was taken care of and the house looked lovely. It made me so happy to know it was housing another growing family. Once you get over seeing the house empty of your things, it's healing to see the house full of new life and being cared for.

We can feel sad or even guilty about renovating and selling a home that has been in the family for decades while simultaneously being excited and happy for new beginnings. I’d so hoped to purchase my grandma’s home when she moved in the 80’s, but the timing wasn’t right. When my family went back to visit Lincoln, NE for the last time we drove past the house and the new owners were kind enough to let us see the remodeling they’d done. One of the most wonderful days of my life because I was with my mother (who’s now been gone for fifteen years) and the owners had done such a beautiful job of updating but keeping the character - just like you did, Rachel ! The best way I can explain how it feels to me is that I’m a hobbit and I’m leaving my hole in the ground to experience all that I can. My grandma's farmhouse is over a hundred years old and she has lived in it since she was 19 (she's now 84). I have told my family members that help her run the house/land that before they sell it I want a chance to buy it. I of course hope my grandma is comfy there for at least a few more years, but I cannot think of ever parting with that house. It has seen four generations of our family and I have a dream of renovating it so that I can hand it down to my kids or someone else in my family to treasure. Oh Rachel, I'm so relieved to hear you share your complex feelings on moving. My mother sold my childhood home 4 years ago (which my grandparents had built and my dad grew up in) and I thought I would never be upset (she has hoarding problems and the house was a huge issue of resentment and chaos), but I cried like a baby when I realised I would never step foot inside it again. I get the excitement about the new house, but I'm glad you're taking the time to process those mixed emotions. Incidentally, on my most recent visit to my family, we drove past our old house and seeing someone outside, we stopped by. They let us come in and showed us around and they seemed really happy there, so it helped me lay some of my unresolved feelings to rest. Thanks for the house tour, you've done such a great job on the house and I'm sure you'll make your new home even more spectacular.

Had to pause the video and make a cup of tea, but I totally understand why you haven’t made a home tour video until now. As a RUclipsr and influencer you already have so much of yourself and your life in the open for anybody to see or possibly judge. And I’m sure you’d want something as intimate as your home for
yourself and not for the whole world to view.
But I’m super excited to finish watching the video and probably get some decor inspirations. Congratulations on the new house!!! I hope it brings nothing but happiness ❤️
Update : your house is freakin adorable!!!!!!!!! I love it!

I had same thoughts. I remember that one live Q & A video a while ago when sooooo many people on live chat requested house tour and I remember feeling really bad for Rachel to feel this awkward obligation to do this, and I am so relieved that she is only doing this now when they are soon moving. Personally I think it is really awkward to ask a youtuber for house tour, I feel like it's pushing boundaries of privacy way too far. After all we are strangers to Rachel, you don't come up to a stranger on the street asking them to show you their house. Also, she is just a person, I don't think some of viewers really understands it that even when someone is having 1kk subscribers in they daily life they feel like a regular person, not a celebrity, so viewers should not ask for more that they are given.

Man, I wouldn't do a house tour on social media if I were an influencer. I've heard some horror stories of people being able to find out addresses just from glimpses out of windows. People are insane. I hope Rachel doesn't put too much of her new place online, actually.

Coming from someone who's moved about eight times before the age of twenty, I understand the strange mixture of gut-wrenching heartbreak from the prospect of leaving a home you've loved for so long, and the excitment and anticipation that comes from entering a new chapter with a new one. Topped with the fact that you and your family have a lot of sentimental attachments to the place, I can't even begin to imagine the sadness you're feeling. This video is really an amazing display of your bravery even in times of adversity and your big heart! I hope both you and Nick really enjoy your last days there and the days to come in your beautiful new home! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I had the really crummy thing of having my Grandpa's funeral this week.
He spent his entire life in the same place (until last year where he was too sick and got moved into a bungalow in town).
We had the lovely thing of being able to reminisce of the farmhouse where we all grew up on and the memories we all cherish. I find it hard being near there anymore as the new owners have demolished the garden to put a road in etc.
Change can be a good thing but also hard to confront. 💛

I raise a cup in solidarity with you, Rachel. I am currently cleaning out my grandmother’s home - who recently moved to an elderly facility - and while it’s exciting to see how much better the house looks cleaned up and knowing a new family gets to live there, it’s all a sad nostalgic feeling. Knowing I will never see the house of my grandma anymore, the house that was part of my childhood and the home of my grandma for 40 years.

We sold my grandmother's house several years ago, but we stopped by with her recently to look back on old times. Damn, do I miss going there, even though it was for family gatherings I never particularly wanted to be social at. There was a stone staircase leading up from the basement to the back garden, which I thought was a shadowy, scary but also intriguing sort of magic.

As a born and raised Floridian- the idea of a basement just blows my mind still. Like. We have attics but most aren’t really…. Useable or practical. Like, you CAN shove a few boxes up into one if you’re willing to go through the effort but it’s mostly just a hot, humid, crawl space with insulation and wooden beams with rusty nails sticking out. But a BASEMENT? You have a WHOLE OTHER FLOOR of space that you can walk around and utilize. And then some (all? No clue) have that cool but creepy looking outdoor entrance???
    Just, totally mind boggling. XD

I guess it's silly to think of a house deserving something, but it just felt right. Your new house gets to be there to hold your new memories, but it doesn't mean that the old memories are gone! The layout is almost the same, it was built around 1960, it belonged to my partner’s grandmother, and it was a 70s nightmare of paneling and questionable carpet before we started redecorating. We’re even somewhat nearby down in RI. Same architect mayhaps???

I definitely feel this. My grandparents lived in their house my entire life. A couple years ago I moved abroad and my grandpa died, so my family ended up selling the house last year. We moved quite a bit when I was a kid so my grandparents' house is what always felt like home. Since I was living abroad I didn't get the chance to take pictures or videos before everything got emptied out and sold off (and my grandparents' house was a treasure trove--it was featured in magazines a few times, it was very Norman Rockwell holiday vibes). I definitely get the value of capturing/collecting 'moments', you'll be so glad you have them in a few years. Best of luck with the rest of your move! I bet your grandma would be so thrilled to see you move into a place that really suits you.

I get so sad in the first night or two in the new place, and it's much easier knowing to expect that and just let yourself feel it. And then inevitably things get better and the sadness dissipates and you can remember the old place fondly. i'm also feeling the 'i don't know' blahs. i bought land in 2016 because i couldn't afford an actual house lol. it was my escape from the city, i turned the place into an absolute garden of eden (pond was already there, but i added streams, bridges, an orchard, gardens galore, a picket fence with a bee garden). last week we learned that we cannot build our dream cottage (the cost of building right now is more than what the actual house will be worth in the end, so it doesn't make financial sense unless we were like millionaires or we were told we could wait 5ish years for the volatile market to stabilize). but we can afford to buy a house, and there's some lovely farmhouses for sale that i'm excited for, and a log house for sale i'm actually going to see tomorrow, but I also feel like i'm betraying my lovely garden land. i don't know.
thank you for reading whatever non-sense, heart-pouring that was above.

I just wanted to say, Rachel's sentiments at the end of the video really touched my heart. For me it was so hard to say goodbye to my family's 100 year old farm house. It was a place that felt safe & warm, and was wrapped in so many fond memories of get-togethers, holidays, and more. After the loss of my grandfather in 2010, I think the idea of leaving a place he and other members of the family, built from the ground up really stung. Though our circumstances weren't exactly the same, I think the feelings still apply. With that being said, I think watching Rachel talk about the feelings her and Nick were experiencing really hit home for me. Thank you for being so open and vulnerable. Sending so much love and kindness your way as you move. Oh, and one last thing, I think that your grandmother would be so happy for you both as you take such a big leap into your future! Love from the Midwest! ❤️

My grandparents moved out of the house my mom and her sisters grew up in not long before the youngest got married. I’m the oldest grandchild, so I still remember so many details about how it was laid out. My mom and aunts got SUPER emotional when they moved out.
Their “new” house is huge in comparison, but Grandpa died in 2007, and Grandma is nearly 95-still living there on her own! Whenever we have to give up that house, I think all of us are going to be a mess, even if none of us grandkids are in a position to take it over. We’re all between 27 and 43 now, most of us paired off, and almost at the point where the great-grandkids outnumber my generation.
    So…I feel you. ❤️

I think it's awesome that you did this home tour because you can look back on it. Every time my parents left a place they lived they would either take a bunch of pictures or a video of the place. Now they show us pics of places like their first apartment and I show my little siblings videos of the houses I lived in when I was little before they were born! It's fun because when my parents tell stories of when they lived in a place I can imagine it. And looking back at old pics brings back memories for them to tell! It's fun that you also have a lot of footage of you crafting and sewing and doing what you do in your house from your videos :)

As someone who moved around a lot as a child, I never got incredibly attached to one house. But the thing that always helped me when moving, is that the new house presents an opportunity; you get to keep your memories of your old house, but you also get a whole new house, with new comfy spots to create and inhabit, and you have so much opportunity to make it your own, for your own desires and needs. It's ok to be upset and grieve a loss, even if it's just the loss of a building, but you were right, this house no longer suits your needs, and it's time to continue onwards.

A video in my recommended list, simply titled, A home tour (finally). I am so glad (or am I?) that I clicked to watch. I can so relate to what you are feeling right now on a couple of fronts! First, though I wasn’t living in it at the time, we had to sell my parents home, which if you can believe, was even smaller than your darling home (love, love that sunroom). My parents solved the one bathroom issue by turning one of the bedrooms into another bathroom, turning their tiny garage into their master and then building a detached 2-car garage (they had a large yard as well). Second and most of all, as I saw the emotion you were struggling with, I relate to leaving a home you love so much. I am the grandma in my case...we moved from our home we lived in since 1970 that I complained about most of that time. Little did I know that I didn’t know what I didn’t know!! I didn’t know how I would hate the layout of the new home we built, hate the over-sized “garden tub” that I finally gave up on using all together, hate the clay soil (we built raised beds and bought top soil from the area we moved from just to be able to have a place to grow stuff!), hate the way the 12 foot ceilings makes it hard to hear each other in the next room, I even hate the placement of the light switches! Nothing makes sense the way they built this house! The move just about did me in and 3 years later, I am still in mourning! I just re-read this, what a downer!! But you guys are smart to have found a farmhouse you know you’re going to love and fill with your own children and create new memories! We just waited way too long and I found I had fallen head over heels in love with our little starter home (we had 2 BR and 1 bath upstairs and the same downstairs, so we had room for our 4 kids and later our daughter’s 4 kids that were also raised there). Anyway, I shed a few tears with you...you are a darling girl and I look forward to seeing your videos going forward, hopefully? Needless to say, I am subscribed!

I think it should be also mentioned that sauna is originally a Finnish word, not just a funny way how Finnish say sauna. I was weirdly shocked how perfectly pronounced sauna just dropped there out of nowhere 😅

It definitely wasn't disappointing or underwhelming. I actually teared up a bit when you said you think your grandma would appreciate what you've done with the house, because I think she would too! Of course I didn't know her.. But I don't think that the renovations were for nothing. You created something beautiful as you always do and will continue to do always. :,) so yeah and I'm glad you feel like it's easier and you're not going through it alone by having your youtube audience because I also just appreciate being able to come along and see how you're doing in life. I totally understand the feelings you're going through. It's definitely grief, definitely hard. But yeah. The documenting little journal snippets of enjoying being there is a nice idea. You two really did a wonderful job on the house so I feel like it wasn't for nothing. You'll have the memories of the wonderful times spent there, the memories of turning it into the beautiful place you created. And knowing your grandma would have been proud of you, and would be proud of you wherever you go. Proud of all your creations. So that's enough from me now lol :) grief really is just hard. But I think your grandma will be around still somehow, that's how family is. Whatever you believe in.. letting go is the hard part.
And yes like other commenters i also feel like you sharing your feelings helped me process my own stuff so thank you ^v^

I’m going to vent a bit. Ignore me if need be!
My family was selling my granny’s house, who had past away 6 months prior, around the time we were searching for and buying our first house, and it literally KILLED me to not buy it. Sooo many memories. My grandparents bought it in the 40s, so my dad and his siblings were born and grew up there. I spent my whole life going there all the time. So many days and nights and holidays spent! I said goodbye to my Papa there many years ago. It’s such a cool house and I would have loved to fix it up and live there! …It’s just two hours away in my home town. Our lives and jobs are here now :( it couldn’t have worked. It seriously hurt so bad! It was within our budget too. I watched the listing like a hawk! BUT.. I am thankful every day for the house we ended up in. It’s perfect for us.
So I am EXCITED to see your new place 😁😁 I know it’s gotta be great to leave all that behind ☺️❣️

    Three things.
    1. My daughter wants to say, “You got this. We moved last year and it was hard but remember you’re awesome. If you need advice you can call me.”
    2. She requests to watch the Epic Adventures of Rachel Maksy. No shame she straight up renamed your channel.
    3. I now get a look of deep disappointment if I watch new episodes with out her. Seriously.

You ever watch You’ve Got Mail, when Meg Ryan’s character is leaving her and her mom’s life-long business behind. Kicks me in the feels so hard. Your home is so adorable. I’m awful at decorating the home. Would love some videos on this subject in your new home ❤️

My grandpa built my grandparents house himself. Well, both sets of grandparents did! But my mom's dad did an amazing job, my grandma had a wonderful vegetable garden in the back, and it was so hard for the family to sell their home. The family that purchased the home was really nice and promised to not tear up Papa's hand laid hardwood floors or do any major changes to what he built. My parents and I live across the country but the rest of the family are fairly close by. My aunt used to drive by and look at the house occasionally. Besides putting up an ugly chain link fence in the back for their dog they did keep with the feel of the house from the outside, so that was reassuring.
It can be hard to move on, but you're sharing your love of that place with another family who will care for it in your place.

About a year ago our extended family sold the farm that had been in our family for so many years. They auctioned it off to a young couple and our grandparents still live next to it so we see it often but it was definitely a surreal moment. Since it was such a tight nit community a ton of people came to the auction; to see so many cars and buggies there was very strange. I’ll never forget that farm and honestly I’m just so grateful for the happy childhood memories that thrived there. It’s sad, but it’s exciting to think of that couple growing old there and in fifty years maybe there will be another child roaming around the fields and getting that so familiar feeling of wonder that nature brings. I understand that feeling and I’m excited to see the new house and explore it with Rachel

Rachel, you need to help us! My partner and I have become totally obsessed with that cabinet you're showing off at 8:00! We've been bickering over it's construction for the last half hour. We don't think it's a humidor or an ice chest but we're pretty determined to find out. Could you post some pictures of the piece, especially the back?

I live in a part of Texas where the ground shifts so much that nobody has a basement. I am simultaneously jealous of everyone else having this entire free room in their house and terrified of the dark horrors they contain

It is hard... way back when my kids were little munchkins, we moved into the house that my husband and his siblings grew up in. We raised those little munchkins into adults and when they went off to be adults, realized that we had too much house, too much land, too far away from anything, in a place with harsh weather we no longer wanted to deal with. So we decided to jump on a dream that started off with 'wouldn't it be cool if...' Even looking forward to a move that gave us so many things, leaving the house behind was bittersweet, occasionally more bitter than sweet.
