The style is neither old or new but how its dance in Angola. If you dont know who this man is i suggest you do some research. I know he not main stream but believe me he is the truth. He knows his music and dance. Dont assume because you dont see 1000 tricks he isnt a top of the line instructor or dancer.
Totally agree. There's a lot skills that are being shown here. In fact, he and she are able to play even within the rudimentary steps. A tasks that is absolutely difficult for the most renowned dancers. Understanding the basics to a mastery is a true challenge. And if you want tricks he's got them all. But what makes him stand out is that his finesse is unmatched even for the top of the pop instructors.
It is not old kizomba, it is kizomba. What people are calling new kizomba is a fusion of dances. Many dance teachers will say they teach kizomba when in fact they include a lot of tango steps or things from other dances they previously taught prior to teaching kizomba. To make matters worse people are thinking this is semba because their teachers are teaching incorrectly both about the dance and the music of kizomba. Probably because they did not take the time to learn and do not know themselves. Then to justify they say this is the style new kizomba when it is not even kizomba. This video is actual kizomba.
Otis! Thank you for posting this...wish I had noticed it FOUR months ago when you posted it. I am thinking you are right...and my feeling is we are being spoon fed some garbage...BUT most of us don't have the authority/knowledge to call BS on those teachers. I found it hilarious when taking a "semba" workshop form Isabelle & Felicienne and they "preluded" the class with a "warning" that this is "their" version of Semba and that it might be different from "other's version". Yeah I get that we all put our own little spin and style to it...but come on! Mind you, I think Isabelle and Felicienne do dance good but...authentic, pro'lly not. Most likely not.
I don't actually have a problem with people dancing or teaching whatever they want. What I find silly is when I hear people say old kizomba when it is just kizomba. The couple you mentioned I do not know them but I respect that they have said to their students that this is their interpretation and they have probably included other stuff. That is the right thing to do. If other things are to be included that is fine as long as they point out what that is. If someone is going to change kizomba to the point of it being indistinguishable from the dance they are selling, then they should not say that what people are still dancing today and learning, is the old style. The respectful thing to say is this is their version with it's own name, with kizomba in the title or not and not say this is the new kizomba and what you are doing is old. Because that is just rude.
I like it but I think there should be a distinction. They should call one dance kizomba and call the one I am learning Ghetto zouk. I do like both but these folks are dancing to happy music. You ever looked at the faces of anyone dancing New kizomba??? They don't look happy.
I was saying the same thing the other day. These new styles of dance, people look serious. And I guess it's suppose to be their game face or something. I believe there is a clear distinction. The rhythm, the tempo of the dancers from what we're seeing in certain top of the pop dancers are not the same as these two. Especially, when we're talking about footwork. Clearly there's a difference between seeing ppl take steps and then showing footwork. Here, I see more footwork than just steps being taken. Here there is more of a bop and hip movement by both the lead & follow. Similar to what Otis Spencer said, I do see a lot of tango steps being taken by the top of the pops. Moves that were borrowed to make the dance kizomba more mainstream & easy to learn for the masses.
Shah Dinero I'd hardly think that Tango dance moves are for the masses. Tango dancing is not easy, I think kizomba and even semba is easier. But you're right...there's steps and stepping and there's dancing with "swagger" and "pep".
Hum Rod, thanks for keeping the conversation going. Yes, I agree. Tango isn't easy. I've taken classes & it's not a simply dance to learn. But, what I do believe is that tango has more acceptable showmanship. Some of the tricky moves and the rhythm of the steps seem to be borrowed from tango. Tango and/or milonga seem to be more circular than the kizomba that has been sprayed throughout Europe. However the rudimentary box step may contradict my statement in some facet nevertheless is less in-line dancing than this kizomba we've been seeing in Europe.
Interesting...so is this Kizomba or is it Semba? I like it but I am curious to know exactly what it is. Or is it "old school" kizomba? His posture looks a little hunched at times; one of those big "no nos" we are taught.
This all gets confusing. What we think, and are taught, and sold to as semba is really old kizomba. Again, I am talking about the dancing, not the music.
Hum Rod It can be confusing. Very much so. But this is Kizomba. But, I think it takes a bit of investigation. Do a search for Kizomba by dancers from Angola. You'll see the style is what the couple is doing above in the video. People in the PALOP countries dance to Kizomba this way. And calling it "old" is an injustice. Old tends to have negative connotations. The dance has evolved quite a bit. Just like the way Hip Hop ppl used to dance a different way versus the more contemporary dances that go by today. Same thing with Reggae and Dancehall. They're not the same as the originals. And people in their respected homelands dance differently to all before-mentioned genres. The dance itself is how PALOP people dance to it. I would go even further to say as to the authentic way the dance is done.
Shah Dinero Hi Shah, thanks for the comments. I don't mean it in an insulting way when I say old. Just a way to distinguish it from what we here are being "sold/taught" as kizomba. There's the kizomba from the, say 80s, vs. the kizomba from now a days...which some would say is "kizomba RnB" perhaps? Some girls I dance "old" kizombas with make that comment...just sounds so old. No different than the original bachatas when they first started coming out vs. the current ones of Don Omar or Cosculluela. Definitely a difference. So personally I wouldn't meant it or take it as an offense...when it comes to bachatas I am actually seeking out the "old" stuff...just seems better and more rhythmic to me.

It is kizomba, old school ;)
It's the original kizomba. The one done in Angola. The Kizomba you're familiar with is mixed with ghetto zouk and tarraxhina.
This all gets confusing. What we think, and are taught, and sold to as semba is really old kizomba. Again, I am talking about the dancing, not the music.

Shazam pulls up "Mancebo" by Tabanka DJaz.
