Hello, I am an Orthodontist myself, I usually ask my patients to avoid hard and sticky foods just like you. If the patient wants to have an apple, it can be cut into small bite size pieces and chewed from the molar teeth. If the patient wants to have chicken they can have boneless chicken so that tearing the flesh from the bone with their incisors can be avoided. I usually ask all my patients to have soft food for at least a week e.g rice so that they are habitual with braces and later move on to normal food stuffs. ( i hope this helps sorry for my bad english it is not my first language)
My orthodontist never told me all these kinds of information which i get it from your videos... I am so grateful and will always look up for your new updates .... Love from 🇮🇳
I don’t understand why and how people would eat a corn in the cob it’s so painful and it’s so scary eating them because it feels like you’re purposely trying to break you brackets
I binge watched all of your videos. I’m 21 and I’ll be getting braces either next week or in two weeks. This channel is a life saver lol
@@steviewastakenwastaken I've accidentally broken several brackets from popcorn. Simple snacks like "munchies, and crunch & munch" to name a couple has literally popped out my wire and I end up spitting out the kernel with the bracket. I can't wait to get these things out lol.

I was told to avoid popcorn, because of the unpopped/partly popped kernels and because pieces of popped kernel can get stuck between teeth and be hard to remove with brackets and wires in place.

Aww I'm sorry!! It's only temporary if that helps =] Congrats on getting your braces! You've got to keep us posted on your progress. && Thank you for the kind words!
I was eating a celery stick and a big crunch noise happened and it felt like my tooth broke. But it was one of the brackets that became loose, so I had to get it glued again
Helps a bit but definitely still stains somewhat. I was guilty of the same thing when I was in braces. Luckily for us there is whitening you can do after! Check out my video on whitening after braces =]
In my own experience (can’t speak for everyone) I was drinking tea and coffee during treatment (I work as a pharm tech I need caffeine 😳) my teeth weren’t stained but I believe because i was very diligent with brushing my teeth. I’d floss, brush, waterpik, and mouthwash for orthodontic treatment twice a day.. my advice, take care of your teeth! It’s so worth it when the braces come off!! 😁😁
All of my friends from school never follow these rules but their braces are completely fine! I don’t understand. Im getting braces, and even though nothing may happen, I’ll take care of them.
Follow the rules please! I got braces when I was in 8th grade and had them for two years. Didnnt follow the doctors rules and when I got them off- they were straight but my teeth were stained horribly, also I didn’t wear the retainer long enough and shifted my teeth back.

Thank you for the content Doc! Proud to say I'm 8 months into my treatment and I've been able to stay away from the foods you mentioned :D I was also advised to deter from "hard" chips (cheetos, doritos) and cut back on soda(when i do drink soda I try to use a straw or wash my teeth right after); I liked chewing gum prior to getting my braces and logically thinking that's a sticky mess so I've avoided it but I've heard "sugar-free" gum is safe(?) what's your input Dr. Greg?
I usually say avoid it if you can because, like you said, it can be a mess. If it is soft enough to not bend the wire, yet hard enough to not get jammed into all the mechanics, it may be ok if it is sugar free but I would say just stay clear of it if you can!
I have braces and I was chewing gum in class. And let’s just say I understand why you are not supposed to chew gum with braces,it got stuck in my wires 🤦🏾♀️
I can’t wait until I can have corn on the cob again omg. My last few gaps need to quit being stubborn and go ahead and close. Hoping to stay on schedule and get my braces off in a year or less 🤞🏻
My orthodontist gave me a list with foods to avoid. One of them was lemons and that really confused me. Why lemons? My friend had braces and her orthodontist didn't say anything about it. I like biting lemons and I admit that I have bitten into some with braces. Same for an apple because I was hungry and my mom packed me a full apple for lunch and I think caramel. It was Halloween and I was sad I couldn't eat some of my candy, so I gave some to my sister. I had a 100 grand bar and didn't know what it was. I bit into it, and there was some really thick caramel in it. I continued chewing because it was so good, but didn't eat the whole thing. Lastly, I was eating a gram cracker and my brace fell off. I thought gram crackers were ok!
I've had my braces going on two weeks now 😒 and I can't eat really to much of anything besides MacnCheese , brownies , baked potatoes , sweet potatoes , oatmeal 😭 I'm a gym rat what else can I eat to keep my weight up !!???
Its been 5 days since i started wearing braces plus bite turbos and im literally starving now becuz i cant chew anything and the food i eat now dont fill me up ;-; i hope i will be able to chew after at least 2 weeks
I agree with what was mentioned, but I also dare to say, that it's OK in moderate amount, and of course you should brush your teeth properly. As for the staining foods/drinks... Yes, they do stain LIKE HELL. One of the reasons why I go to my dental hygienist every three months or so. Airflow works magic on these!
You have some pretty clear and good info. I've been in orthodontics for about 20 months (I had a jaw surgery that was delayed for 6 months), but now I'm about 7 weeks post op and I have (from what I've read on the internet) a Posterior open bite and only my front teeth touch. I have box pattern elastics for 3,4,29,30; 13,14,19,120 also class 3 elastics AANNNDD triangle elastics for 5,6,7,26; 10,11,12, 23...I said all that to say, can you explain how Posterior open bites are corrected and also Class 3 bites/elastics. Thanks
I suffer from jaw pain so my ortho also recommended not chewing gum a lot (of course), but besides the damage that chewing gum can do to the jaws, I found out that it also moves my wires (even when the gum is not that sticky)! BTW my braces were removed 3 days ago after more than 2 years yay! :D I found support in your videos through the treatment somehow haha thank you!
Braces Explained yes I’m doing very well because of these kinds of videos that you upload, even the orthodontist was shocked that i knew this much info haha
I just got braces a few days ago and my front teeth are killing me! My orthodontist is separating my front teeth to make room for an expander then surgery
My orthodontist didn't tell me any foods to avoid, but I already figured that I shouldn't chew ice (hard one) and no biting into an apple or raw carrots. I thought I would have to avoid chewing gum, but I discovered that I could chew it no problem. I had had friends with braces say they couldn't have popcorn, but one of my other friends here was eating popcorn with me, so I figured I could eat that no problem as well. I only have 10 brackets on the top, and might be getting bottom braces, but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe the orthodontist wasn't comfortable talking with me as much because of a language barrier. I'm working in Brazil, and I have ok Portuguese, but this is stretching my vocabulary, since it's a new situation.
My brother and i got it a few months A go and i got my bottom, Rings New colors and it hurted for a few months And when they put the rings on and had small Teeth and then they gave me new rings and i had to bite on a stick and was painless But i am so happy that you put did this video so thank you! :) So that's my story :)
Dr. Greg, i dont think i could give up my lattes :( Will using a straw when drinking coffee help prevent staining my front teeth at all? Thank you so much. Love your videos!
I was told to avoid sugary food and sticky stuff, but they said sugar free gum was okay... I was suprised by that. I don't get my braces till Tuesday but I had my consultation already.
There are usually a number of factors that go into making the decision as to why extractions are necessary - I will try to cover this in a future video but its pretty broad
Hey! I should make one that clarifies this but check out my video on NiTi wires as well as colors/ligatures - those two videos should be good to clarify it a bit until I make a video on this =]!
Also crunchy foods should be avoided too. Pork rinds, crunchy bread, fried corn, nuts. The force you put on breaking these foods in smaller pieces with your teeth can make your brackets fall off. I like bread but now I eat it in one-bite size and smeared for example in the juices of the food I eat.
Same! I was told not to eat pizza crusts, and now I feel like a 3 year old leaving them on the side of my plate!!! I was also told not to eat crusty bread - which is the only tolerable part of school dinners :/
I have had my braces since the past three and a half months now and TBH I feel quiet comfortable and I can keep them stuck onto my teeth for the rest of my life also (not trying to sound rude, sorry if I do) and the foods that should be avoided, I'm sorry braces but I eat them all😂😂 and I brush my teeth only once a day ( I brush them twice very rarely) and I think you're a good orthodontist! You give a good explanation in some time only! I mean such types of videos about braces are not less than 10 minutes long and I find you very intelligent so Thank you and you earned a subscriber! (I Might unsubscribe after I get my braces off ; well not actually😂😂 I'm joking!) Thank you❤
Somebody has probably brought a bag of coffee beans, opens it up, smells them and then closes the bag. “Ok, I’ve just sniffed my morning cappuccino and I’m ready for the day.”
Hi can you make a video of what colour braces to choose from, like which will make your teeth whiter. Which ones you like? Would be really helpful. I get braces on 15 May and really stuck on baby blue or silver.
Braces life hack until I get mines on. Day 1: 💖🌻 When you eat ice make sure it’s crushed ice as if these you can suck on em they get soft and turn bite sized🌻💖
Fizzy drinks are an addiction for me, like I really struggle if I don't have a can for about 6 hours. When I first got my braces I lasted 4 weeks without any fizzy drinks. And for a good while, I only had a can of Coke or 7UP a week. And as the months went by I became really slack and drank fizzy drinks every day WITHOUT a straw. I know right? D: I always brush my teeth daily cuz I'm a very hygienic person but what I wanna know is if I'll have those little squares on my teeth? (Pretty sure I most likely will do) And can an orthodontist refuse to give you a retainer once they take your braces off? Some people have said yes and some people have said no. I tried Googling it and honestly got no answer. Some help, please.
IF YOU HAVE CLEAR BRACES: Please quit coffee NOW. They turn yellow from coffee no matter if you brush well. I wish my orthodontist told me that. :( I’m stuck with stained clear brackets it’s gross.
I just got braces on today and your videos are giving me life. I am in panic that I'll break the bracketts off just by breathing hahah. What do I have to do to break them off? I mean... will brushing too hard or sucking too hard on a straw break them? I know it probably sounds dumb, but I'm terrified of them and they've only been in my mouth for 12 hours
You're going to do awesome =] They're stuck on your teeth quite well but that doesnt mean they are indestructible. By using the rationale from this video and avoiding such foods/drinks, you'll b ok!
How to floss with braces !! : ruclips.net/video/QA85iW2NmXE/видео.html

Ann Francisco you can have whitening but not advanced whitening. advanced whitening will cause spots on your teeth when you get your braces removed

And what about popcorn? Popcorn hulls can get stuck deep in the gums sometimes.
Usually its because the unpopped kernels are hard and can break the brackets / bend the wire
Been waiting for this video
Sweeeet! Hope you're doing well Sheen .. and hope you enjoy it!
Braces Explained yes I’m doing very well because of these kinds of videos that you upload, even the orthodontist was shocked that i knew this much info haha
I just got braces a few days ago and my front teeth are killing me! My orthodontist is separating my front teeth to make room for an expander then surgery
Ariel The Beauty Foodie eat ice cream 😊 soothes the tightness some
Ahh sorry you're in discomfort! Alexis is right, check out my video on managing pain, there should be some good tips for you there!
Gum candy that has like juice in side of it
My orthodontist didn't tell me any foods to avoid, but I already figured that I shouldn't chew ice (hard one) and no biting into an apple or raw carrots.
Cesaro is that you?
Nutella and peanut butter
Why do some orthodontists say that you can't have any gum, while others say you can only have sugarless?
Gum can get stuck it the braces and make it hard to clean. Gum with sugar is the worst because it can get stuck around the brackets and cause decay!
no i cannot ever give up coffee and tea even for a few years =((
Getting mine next week. I’m watching all the videos I can to know what not to do.
Dr. Greg, i dont think i could give up my lattes :( Will using a straw when drinking coffee help prevent staining my front teeth at all? Thank you so much. Love your videos!
It wont necessarily prevent it but it will decrease the amount of stain. Thank you so much! I love making them for ya'll!
Watching for recommendations of what to eat this week since I'm getting braces on Friday 😅
i found that i can eat popcorn with braces if i eat one of them at the same time
i havent broken a bracket and its been almost 1 year and a half.
I was told to avoid sugary food and sticky stuff, but they said sugar free gum was okay... I was suprised by that. I don't get my braces till Tuesday but I had my consultation already.
that's exciting! You got them 2 days ago!
Could you do a video of why extractions are necessary?
There are usually a number of factors that go into making the decision as to why extractions are necessary - I will try to cover this in a future video but its pretty broad
Hi Dr Greg can you explain how braces are tighten when you visit your orthodontist
Michelle Harris-Smith YESSS THIS I WHY I CAME TO HIS PAGE TO SEE IF HE UPLOADED THAT!😭 I want that video tooo!
@@misaelmarquez7 I'm hoping he replies too
I was told to avoid soda and fruit juice or to have them with a straw. I was also told to avoid hard pizza crust.😬
Same! I was told not to eat pizza crusts, and now I feel like a 3 year old leaving them on the side of my plate!!! I was also told not to eat crusty bread - which is the only tolerable part of school dinners :/
I was told to avoid hard foods in general. But frankly, it's nearly impossible to chew on anything hard. It's just so uncomfortable!
All of those sound correct! Hope you guys understand the reasoning for these requests too =]
We do now thanks to you. 😊
(I Might unsubscribe after I get my braces off ; well not actually😂😂 I'm joking!) Thank you❤
I've only had my braces on for 4 days can I eat sandwiches with braces? Will I be allowed to chew sugar free gum ?
Somebody has probably brought a bag of coffee beans, opens it up, smells them and then closes the bag. “Ok, I’ve just sniffed my morning cappuccino and I’m ready for the day.”
Hi can you make a video of what colour braces to choose from, like which will make your teeth whiter. Which ones you like? Would be really helpful. I get braces on 15 May and really stuck on baby blue or silver.
Go for it!! I usually recommend darker colors so that your teeth look whiter in contrast =] Definitely pick colors that you like early on though!!
Thanks for your information sir....iam from India
Hello !
Could you recommend me a rinse I can wash my mouth out with when I’m on the go?
So is it okay to drink juices or smoothies ? As long as we brush or rinse afterwards ?
Braces life hack until I get mines on.
Day 1:
💖🌻 When you eat ice make sure it’s crushed ice as if these you can suck on em they get soft and turn bite sized🌻💖
Ive been eating starbursts and sticky foods with braces on but I didnt chew them I sucked on them.
Please make an “effects off an untreated impacted canine”(upper jaw) video.
Can I use crest white strips with a permanent retainer? Will it weaken the glue? Thanks in advance :)
Fantastic question. Yes you can!
Some help, please.
i eat all of these and have never broken a bracket
Getting braces a week after thanksgiving… 2 hears… I’m indulging in thanksgiving. Thanks for the informative videos!
IF YOU HAVE CLEAR BRACES:
Please quit coffee NOW. They turn yellow from coffee no matter if you brush well. I wish my orthodontist told me that. :( I’m stuck with stained clear brackets it’s gross.
The material we use to hold the bracket also stains!
Please do a video about an open bite, every thing you need to know, how you fix it,... Itd.
There is a looooot about open bites but I will try and explore that information soon
How about peanut butter. It's sticky, but there are also no sugar added
wait your telling me i shouldn't have popcorn. what about crushed ice?
What if I used a straw to drink my tea? Is that okay?
Kiara Anderson lol straw for tea
@@danarasul96Louisiana iced sweet tea. :)
Okay 😁
Yupp! Sweet / sugary drinks that also stain should be drank through a straw to minimize exposure to teeth =]
Is it OK to have church wine (communion) with braces?
Well I drink coffee, juices with straw so That it won't stain the part behind the bracket.
Sugar Free gum is the best with braces. It doesn’t get stuck in my braces and i eat it so my mouth gets used to chewing things.
I love your videos so much! Thank you!!!
Ahh you are too kind !! Thank YOU for checking them out =]
I'm getting braces soon so this is helpful
Can you do a video on how braces are applied? I've been binge watching ur videos cause I'm getting mine next week lol
Same what day??? Mines is on the 12 I am nervous 😬
Yeah I want to make one on that soon!! Hang tight
Princess Franklin I’m getting mine the 12th too
Once I had pop rocks with gum in it but I thought it was just bubble gum flavored
i’m wondering if you can eat crepes & strawberries because i usually have that for my breakfast, or should i eat cereal?
I just got braces on today and your videos are giving me life. I am in panic that I'll break the bracketts off just by breathing hahah. What do I have to do to break them off? I mean... will brushing too hard or sucking too hard on a straw break them? I know it probably sounds dumb, but I'm terrified of them and they've only been in my mouth for 12 hours
You're going to do awesome =] They're stuck on your teeth quite well but that doesnt mean they are indestructible. By using the rationale from this video and avoiding such foods/drinks, you'll b ok!
