- Yep. That's actually the character art they used. Today, we're taking a look at the most bizarre game trilogy to ever be on the GBA!

The best part about making this video, is knowing that I never have to play these again.
Do you know of Kaijudo? The Reboot that Also died 2 years later.
NOOOOOOOO
I have two of these games.
It is as bad as you say. Even as a 5 year old I hated them tbh :P
Pikasprey Yellow do Pokémon quartz
What if people want you to do a lets play of one of the games?
They didn't even finish one of the jokes:
What did the Buddhist monk (BM) say to the hot dog vendor (HDV)?
BM - "Make me one with everything."
HDV - "That'll be $3"
BM pays with a $5 bill.
HDV takes it without another word.
BM - "What about my change?"
HDV - "True change comes from within."
HaydenX Oh, ha, ha, ha! Soooo funny! XD
/s
You make great dad one day.
The monk laughs before saying, "You can keep it. I see a man who needs change more," before turning and walking away.
-A friend after reading this joke
Well, that joke was a mess.
I love it
That was unironically really funny.
I am in physical tears at the fact that half the dialogue in the 2nd game is just jokes. It's like the devs were painfully self aware of how bad it was and decided to just troll anyone who bought it.
If you think the art here looks bad, wait till you play the PS2 game. The textures during duels are extremely low-res, and the pre-rendered cutscenes are done in Flash. I am not making this up.
Now Pikasprey has to play the PS2 game.
Gannon Benson I agree that Flash gets a lot of undeserved hate. The Wakfu animated series was animated in Flash, and not only does it look absolutely gorgeous, but it's my favorite Western animated series.
The problem is that when people use Flash badly, it's very noticeably bad. At least bad CG or bad hand-drawn animation are usually Narm-y (aka "so bad, it's good"), but bad Flash animation just looks like it was made by either a high school student who was bored one day, or a soulless corporate entity.
StarShine480 - The game I only beat because I used the easy-to-find-by-accident cheat code that lets you automatically win every match. :D
Flash was always getting flak, since the days of newgrounds at least, it's not a new thing.
I just looked up footage of it and holy shit it’s so bad lmao
Did you know that Shadow of the Code has a quest that you can't finish because one of the the dialog boxes of the needed NPCs is misprogrammed and crashes the game every time? And that after you get a quest, you can't cancel it or switch for another one ever?
And if I remember right, there's a certain point in the story where after it, every story character's dialog has a frequent verbal tic of ending sentences with ", kid". And I don't mean one character, I mean multiple characters develop it like an infection, completely out of nowhere. It's like someone quit work for the week and said "hey George, I'm leaving, could you finish putting in the story dialog" and George was like "sure thing, kid"
Hey wait I beat Shadow of the Code, what are you talking about
nothing personal, kid
@@Ephraim225 I guess you didn't get the broken quest.
Yeah I beat it too. What is this bugged quest?
"Dear CANCER..."
So fitting, isn't it?
I think the art style can be best described as "every anime fanart from the 2000s ever".
its the nutshack but all the characters are replaced with the portraits from the gba duel masters game
And nobody would bat an eye
The Nutshack? **takes long pull of cigarette** been a while since I heard that name....
Drawing style is almost identical
I have no idea what the nutshack is but I'd watch it.
6:03 I like how the detective is nearly as tall as the arena.
The beginning of that first game is so amazing! A guy breaks into your house, takes of his mask, takes a SELFIE and then leaves the picture behind.
I mean you can't get much more amazing than that
The first two games look like crappy romhacks of a better game and the last one looks like a newgrounds fangame of the series.
"As if Sonic had a son with Wario" Don't give Deviantart more creepy ideas.

Shadow The Thief Empress it didn't exist back then.

SarissaEG didn't these come out in the 80s?
Connor Schultz I HOPE YOU'RE JOKIN', BUDDY. 80's? Really? I would've been fine if you said late 90s or something, but..80s? As said in the above comment, 2004 was the release year..

“Believe me it will not take long until you get sick of being asked if you want to run to your mommy”
What would you do if you were lost in a city that the only thing that people say it's children jokes...
Run home to my mommy?
if that' your solution, you really are in a *MOMumental* trouble!
hahaha.... kill me.....
Pikasprey Yellow Wait don't your parents not care if you live or die?
Simple. I would go the way of Kurt Kobain and shoot myself with a shotgun I named "Kurt Kobain's Microphone".
Fire may be the only real solution there.
Duel Masters isn't really a Yu-Gi-Oh knockoff so much as a spinoff of Magic: The Gathering tuned for JApanese audiences. It was - and still is - ludicrously successful over there too. That's how it got a show and everything. They relaunched the card game in the US as Kaijudo a few years back, along with a new show (that wasn't nearly as weird as the old one - it was actually really good imo) and it was all doing well until the Hub imploded, taking the show with it, which caused sales of the card game to tail off and saw it die a second death :(
Keiya Bachhuber sad!
I thought that system looked familiar! Me and my friends were super into card games in high school and I knew several kids who played Kaijudo.
Wait...
"Duel masters:Kaijudo Showdown"
"Duel masters was relaunched as Kaijudo"
Hmm...
I remember when it relaunched as Kaijudo. I just finished watching the Cardfight!! Vanguard anime and was looking for something new to watch, and didn't realize Kaijudo was a Duel Masters reboot until all the same monsters and the exact same card art showed up and I was like "...oh."
Should of pur on cartoon network or Disney xd
I remember the anime for this having a weird dub that basically just recut and rewrote stuff to be constantly meta and fourth wall instead of a straight translation. It was kind of like a precursor to abridged series in a way, though I remember even as a teen not finding what I saw of it funny.
Speaking of that, did the anime come out before Ghost Stories? It is still something of an affectionate parody though.
Behonkiss I loved that dub! Some of those lines were pretty funny, especially the first season
Nelisez Pasce Ahh, Ghost Stories is still good..
Ranen Chancelor Half of it is. The other half is references to celebrities who were big at the time and have since faded into obscurity
Behonkiss Like most abridged series.
The Duel Masters video games really weren't very good (I owned Kaijudo Showdown) but the actual TCG is up there in my top 5 TCG's. The game might have been made to try and bank on the popularity of Yugioh or Magic, but it still had it's fair share of originality.
Shields instead of Life Points made it easier to keep track, and unlike the prizes of Pokemon which continued to boost up the player who was winning, the shield that is destroyed is put into your hand and could be a card that saves you, especially if it has a Shield Trigger on it.
Then there was the mana system, which unlike Magic (or Pokemon) where you had to slot about half your deck into mana (or energy) cards, any card in Duel Masters could become mana. It made you choose, do you keep your 7 mana monster for later and put down 7 small cards for the mana you need, or do you sacrifice your big card for an early game monster that can get some fast damage in on your enemies shields?
The monsters were also pretty solidly designed, and even some of the flavor text was pretty funny, although you have to see the cards to get the jokes.
Just because you didn't like the video games, which is very, very understandable, you should still check out the actual card game, if you like card games. It's actually my number 3 game in my top 5, in case you were wondering, Magic is #4, Pokemon is #5, Yugioh is #2 and Infinity Wars at #1.
Pyrithe yeah the game is actually excellent
i remember having some duel masters cards as a kid... i remember this death smoke card (i think that was the name but im probably wrong) and there was a version where the art was a different color which was weird and neat... and now for the one flavor text i remember: "i think i need an umbrellaaaaa!"
I agree. I guess this just shows the power that having good supplementary material has. If duel masters had a better anime and video games, do you think it would've done better in the west? Would it have still been going? It's not the second most popular card game in Japan for nothing, so I guess so.
"The game might have been made to bank off the popularity of YuGiOh or Magic'
The game is made by the same people behind Magic, Wizards of the Coast. It was an attempt to get Magic (or something similar like Duel Masters) to appeal to a Japanese audience.
Obviously you don't need the most bleeding-edge graphics available to make a game good, but good lord, these games are just inexcusably ugly. Pair that with one-note gameplay and practically nonexistent story, and you've got a recipe for disaster.
You know what the really weird thing about Duel Masters is? I was honestly kind of shocked to learn this - it's made by Wizards of the Coast. If that doesn't mean anything to you, Wizards of the Coast are most famous for Magic: The Gathering, a card game that Yu-Gi-Oh's author was a big fan of. Such a big fan, in fact, that he created a version of Magic for his manga, albeit one with highly simplified rules. So Duel Masters isn't just a cheap knock-off - it's a knock off of a knock off made by the same people as the genuine article.
he briefly mentioned this
The version he created for the manga is duel masters. It's the 2nd most popular card game in japan.
I'd say it's more accurately a knockoff of a parody, made by the same people as the genuine article. That said, it also has an official crossover with the genuine article - both Jace Beleren and Nicol Bolas have cards in Duel Masters, both of whom even have effects based on activated abilities they have in Magic (Jace has two effects based on abilities from Jace, the Mind Sculptor, while Bolas has an effect based on one of Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker's abilities)
The story goes that after seeing the success of the Yu-Gi-Oh manga and its tie-in TCG, Wizards licensed out the MtG IP to a manga author, who made the Duel Masters manga. Wizards wasn't satisfied with the manga's focus on people playing the game, rather than being set within the universe of the game, and was reluctant to let the manga get an anime adaptation, so Wizards and the manga's author came up with an original, fictional TCG for the anime adaptation. In turn, after the anime proved a success, Wizards made an actual TCG out of the fictional one they made for the anime.
So on top of being a knock off of a parody made by the people who made a genuine article, it's an adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation, made by the same people as the original source material.
It's a double Ouroboros of recursive adaptation. Shit's fuckin weird.
Duel Masters can also be titled as "Baby's First MTG Game"
No he mentioned that duel masters what a knock off of yugioh, basically acting like yugioh did everything first

"YOUR QUEST ENDS HERE."
wtf
What would Dr.Eggman want with an old card?

oh i remember the duel masters game for ps2 being actually being pretty good, i hadn't heard of any GBA games before this and now i see why
The PS2 game was pretty good from a gameplay standpoint. But the visuals certainly leave much to be desired
The art style reminds me of those how to draw manga books in those Scholastic flyers my elementary school had in the early 2000s
That art reminds me of that Home Alone game Jontron reviewed (the one where he recreated the house in seconds).
I was very surprised when they announced the sequel to The Nutshack would not only be created two years BEFORE the original, but be titled "Duel Masters: the Video Game." Bold. Very Bold.
Fun fact, Mega Man Battle Network actually had a crossover with Duel Masters, not only did they Cross promote their own movies together and had the other series cameo in them.
In MMBN5 there are Giga Chip in each version that are based on the Eternal Phoenix and Death Phoenix respectively and a promotional Card of Bass called "Forte, Brave Fear Lord" was released with 2 different artworks on it. Keep in mind the Movies and Card are Japanese exclusive, the Giga Chips are still part of the game.
Holy shit. I remember downloading this rom back when the game came out. I also remember thinking how bad the show was, so maybe the game is fun? That game looks like it's art is based off those early to mid 2000s "How to draw anime." books.
But why does the thief sneak in, takes his masks off, and poses for a picture (I know he doesn’t actually pose but still).
That was never mentioned. 😂😂
just fyi, YuGiOh is still going strong. it started its 6th anime series recently and the card game is still popular enough to have tournaments on cons! okay, it has more of a cult following than a widespread fandom by now, but the fandom is still growing, surprisingly enough.
LuckyKoneko same with duel masters
Nutshack Masters: Senpai Unnoticed.
Fun Fact: *MegaMan NT Warrior (The anime adaptation of the GBA game, Megaman Battle Network) has a movie crossover with Duel Masters.*
MEGA MAN?!?
Escusme what
2 of the Giga Chips from MMBN5 (Eternal Phoenix and Death Phoenix) were also referencing that crossover
Duel Masters had a movie crossover with Beyblade Metal Fusion as well.
If I recall what I read on Wikipedia many moons ago when I was briefly nostalgia tripping for Duel Masters, which lasted about an afternoon as this video acknowledges it was only ever the flavor of the month at best here, this isn’t true and is more of an internet hoax or misconception. Each franchise had a “movie” released on the same day and billed simultaneously in Japan. This is actually more common than you might think, or at least it used to be. Anime would have non feature length movies, standard episode length with higher production value, 45 minutes, 1 hour, and build their way towards feature length films if they ever achieved those heights. Even the first One Piece “films” were not feature length, and weren’t for a while. Double (or more considering the length) billing is also more common among anime films released to theaters in Japan even in general, or at least it used to be. Fun fact: Grave of The Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro were originally released to theaters on the same bill/ticket. I’m not kidding. A Duel Masters and Megaman NT Warrior film were released and screened together and a poster was made which prominently featured both main characters in a dramatic background which didn’t segregate them into exclusive sections to their own films. This lead to the internet rumors and misconceptions but as far as I know the characters never appear together or interact with each other. I’d also like to add that I may be wrong just in case, as I don’t feel a need to revisit Duel Masters which I only ever had a brief passing interest in, and was only barely aware of and never “into” Megaman NT Warrior.
...edgy dark protagonist from the second game reminds me of a bad emo version of Manjoume (Chazz) from YuGiOh GX.
LuckyKoneko Isn't he already emo?
@@riukasoulripper8252 not really
In fact he isn't

To those asking about hidden content videos in the comments: he's not going to make them if you keep bugging him about it. I love them as much as anyone, but if we keep annoying him about it he might do a rushed product to keep us quiet. So might as well comment something relevant to the video, since we want him to stay inspired and creative so we don't end up with a product looking horrible and keep getting good videos from him. The creators of the game in this video were probably making it because it could sell, and look at it's quality. Isn't this in itself a lesson to not rush him?
Or share interesting hidden content that they managed to find in a game that hasn't been covered? It'd be a greater way to get the ball rolling, and get the fans to focus on something productive!
Xd
These games literally look like they were created in something like scratch. (That terrible coding thing for kids)
It actually is a l ittle more advance then you think. (Only if your trying to make a full on game)
Dude scratch isn't even half as bad as this. I've seen much better graphics and gameplay there
Duel Masters was Wizards of the Coasts attempt to get new players into Magic the Gathering (yes it's was/still being made by WotC) soooo...the game was actually quite good (get some images of cards and play it)
and YEAH the video games look TERRIBLE but the games itself (the gameplay) where true adaptations, still with a strange... "playfield" So you didn't see the full field like in the yugioh games, they wanted to go more for a "cinematic look" i suppose....but looking at the video of the first game... i'm glad that i started with the second game and yeah the final one IS better (but i actually didn't speak with the random NPCs soooo... i didn't know about the "good" jokes
Duel Masters actually started off as a Magic: The Gathering Manga, but ended up with it's own game after a while. It is STILL going on in Japan but died off in America because of things like this and because WOTC tried to use it as a gateway drug to Magic. Which is honestly kind of creepy. I just wish they would have let this game grow here.
I loved this when I was a kid. Looking back it was because the simplicity of it. I think the art was fine for children. It’s always hard viewing something that you really enjoyed as a child when you’re older. Really takes off the nostalgia goggles though.
I blacked out for a few minutes from sheer laughter when you showed the lame jokes section of the 2nd game. Not even trying to make a joke. I literally laughed till I suffocated and when I woke up the video was done. This trilogy is gonna go up in the Hall of Shame forever now XD
Okay, you really had us fooled. It must have taken a lot of time and effort to make character designs look that bad, even in Microsoft Paint, but at least you took the trouble of making these as bad as possible.
...Wait. What? These were actually released commercially? You mean this isn’t an April Fool’s joke? I DON’T WANT TO LIVE ON THIS PLANET ANYMORE.
I don't remember it looking so horrible..
It's because of the tiny screen of the GBA, the games looked way more crisp on it than on modern monitors.

When I saw the second game was called "Kaijudo Showdown", I flipped a bit. "Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters" was one of my favorite shows on Hub Network. Apparently it was an attempt to revitalize the Duel Masters franchise.
Funnily enough, these games did have a purpose... In Megaman Battle Network 5. I believe connecting one of these games to MMBN5 got you a special Gigachip. You Either Got Phoenix P, or DethPhoenix D, depending on your version. Don't quote me on that though, I only ever got far in the DS Version of the games, where you can just purchase said Gigachip.
I myself enjoyed Shadow of the Code mostly because I just like Duel Masters and this game does give huge variety of cards to choose from. Although I agree that graphics are just horrible (especially when you think that the same console brought Golden Sun) but as a card game sim, it works alright.
Good job man keep up the great work

I thought "it doesn't look that bad of a game" until 5:00.
I can't really hate the art since the shading looks nice and I can't really draw but I have enough knowledge of art and pixel art that these sprites and character portraits would be impressive to me. I also like it since it has its own charm to it.

This made me nostalgia hard. I used to LOVE Duel Masters as a kid, mainly the trading card game. I did play the first video game though, and man I had completely forgotten about it until I saw this. I don't think I ever realized how bad it was lol.
I really loved the 5 card shield mechanic. Something about it will always be one of my favorite mechanics in a trading card game.
For a series that got featured in Megaman Battle Network 5, I expected a whole lot more... I mean, you kind expect a big deal when two Giga Cards, Phoenix (Team Protoman) and DrkPhnx (Team Colonel), came straight from Duel Masters.
Welp it =was= better, with a set of rather good attacks appearing on BN 4,5 and 6.
It was also a bit intrusive, you could say, as the protag from Boktai, Django, appeared in person on sidequests in 4 and 6. Intrusive, because him, as a human, was in the digital cyberspace AKA the internet. In physical form. Face to face with navis, which are A.I.s. By the power of dontthinktoohardaboutit.
Ah... My first Giga Chip. DethPhnx. I hated it. It was really confusing and despite me OWNING Kaijudo Showdown, I had absolutely ZERO idea that Death Phoenix was a DM reference. There's subtle advertising, and then there's that. It was just an awful chip. To be fair I didn't really like any of the BN5 Giga Chips with the exception of HolyDrem and Bass. Too many GigaChips rely on bugs or DarkSoul, and locks any sensible player out of wanting to use them.
I also love how both Duel Masters Chips were stupid lazy just like their video games too. Eternal Phoenix has it's name cut down to just Phoenix. And the chip itself was named Pheonix. Nice spell checking there. Plus the chip is just Meteors, and then a healing chip. And Death Phoenix is just a recolor of Phoenix with an exact copy of Nebula Grey's attack. EXACT COPY. It even gets stopped by holes like Nebula Grey, and then performs a lazy Navi Recycle effect just like the BN3 White chip.
Who would even look at that series with such abysmal chips? Especially when Django and GunDelSol were WAAAY more useful and way cooler. I may not have played Boktai, but Battle Network, especially Battle Network 4 with the Dracula's Castle scenario, makes me want to. That Solar panel peripheral idea sounds pretty neat.
I enjoyed the hell out of Sempai Legends. I wanna say that I have the cards that came with the game.
You gotta admit, the girls in Shadow of the Code were lookin' fine. ;)
I checked out the ending of the first Game in RUclips
