Another small fun tidbit: at the end of the Belmont mode of the game, Soma will angrily shout the name of the character you are playing as at the moment ("BELMONT!" "BELNADES" or "ALUCARD"). They left that line in Japanese though, so he shouts the Romaji version of that instead ("BERUMUNDO" "BERUNANDESU" or "ARUKADO")

Gotta say that Gergoth was one of my favorite boss fights in the game. The backstory of the poor thing, fighting it while falling through countless floors and the boss theme made it very enjoyable.

Oh man, this was the first Castlevania game I ever played; I didn't even know it was a sequel at the time. I still love it.
That said, there is actually a difference between the Soul systems of Aria and Dawn. Souls in Dawn often start out with a power of 1/9 or 1/3, which would increase by 1 for every 1 or 3 souls you collect, respectively, whereas in Aria, all Souls just have 1 power level. Aria introduced the soul mechanic, which added a fair bit of variety to any given run of the game, but Aria also suffered from a very weak story, comparable to titles like Ecclesia, Portrait, and even Harmony of Dissonance. I mean, the final leg of the game is basically about 'defusing' the tension of an encounter with Dracula, by fighting a nameless faceless entity in what is effectively Zelda's Second Quest version of the Aria castle cut down to size. It feels like you're wrong-warping through everything you'd done up to that point, to fight an ass-pull monster.
Like, the 'idea' of Aria is very cool, 'being' Dracula and having to escape that legacy--but I feel like the story could be re-done with more TLC--perhaps illustrating how Dracula gradually asserts control over Soma, Prince of Persia The Two Thrones style, and maybe instead of fighting Chaos at the end, Dracula can actually split off and manifest as Soma's evil-side that Soma has to face off against, the way Dawn of Sorrow pitted Julius and co. against him.
Alas, given the current state of Konami I'd not hold my breath, but I suppose there's always Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to carry on the tactical soul system Aria introduced...

It's worth noting there is actually another patch out there that completely removes the seals in the main game so they function just like in Julius mode (As in, you don't need to do them AT ALL). It also makes the touchscreen breakable iceblocks also breakable by normal weapons. It essentially makes it so you don't need to use the touchscreen at all. Much better for emulated play.

Yo Pikasprey, huge fan. This video was great. It gave me a reason to revisit Dawn of Sorrow, which I stupidly thought I had beaten last week. It was just the bad ending.
Out of curiosity, how long does a video like this take you to make?

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I loved the GBA and DS castlevanias, and was heartbroken when Order of Ecclesia was the last metroidvania in the series. I'm excited for when you get to OOE, it was really interesting and had probably my favorite gameplay setup of any of the games, even if the exploration elements weren't as strong.
(Also Gergoth was such a royal pain my first time through! On replays I realized how his attacks were telegraphed and avoidable, but it took some hard learning)

I got the bad ending with Dario so many times before knowing there were more things you were supposed to do against him. But man, it was such a memorable journey to keep going back into the game until finding the right way of doing things, it felt like discovering a whole new world.

That video was great, thanks for making it! I loved your Castlevania playthroughs, and really look forward to you continuing with more!
I'll admit, it was an "Unused Content" video for Pokemon that was first recommended to me on youtube that got me to your channel, but since then I've watched nearly everything you've put out on both Blue and Yellow. You're my favourite let's player! Please just keep being you, no matter what garbage annoying people toss at you~

    Amazing video Pikasprey :)
One of the most important changes in the "soul" system, was the hability to improve your very souls!
In AoS, it didn't matter how many souls of each kind you had, but in this game, your souls become stronger as you get more of them.
For example, having 9 Ghost Dancer souls gives you the best luck boost (not that it matters much, luck is kinda broken in this game).
This also helps at leveling up your familiars, pretty fun

I discovered your channel through your Pokemon videos. But I am also a huge Castlevania fan, and Aria of Sorrow is one of my favorite GBA games as well. I was actually pleasantly surprised when I saw that you did a video on that game. I didn't comment on that video, but you did a great review. The same with this review.
I appreciate that you have more diversity in video game taste then simply Pokemon stuff. Would love to see you do more stuff about either Castlevania or other franchises that are not Pokemon!

Another reason for the vastly different artstyle in Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin was that Ayami Kojima was busy making the artwork for Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, which was the next big home console release for the series, and Igarashi didn't want to distract her from working on that.

Just a heads up when using Persephone's soul (the vacuum cleaner). It can be used on Death as well as MANY other enemies to vacuum up their projectiles. Actually, it makes a lot of enemies and bosses cheaply easy lmao. If you're struggling on Death for example when he sweeps with his scythe in his second phase, this is THE way to go to get his tiny sickles out of the way and focus on his scythe. You can also get kind of tricky by timing a special axe attack for invincibility frames etc. That actually works really well in phase one when he breaks his scythe apart into tiny pieces.

The one major complaint I had about Yoko's shop was that a lot of the best weapons required boss souls, which means you have to replay the game multiple times if you want to collect all items and get 100% souls. It's a pain in the ass tbh.

  • @casuallavaring

3:13 The change in art style was done because Ayami Kojima, who usually draws the artwork for Castlevania, was busy working on Curse of Darkness for the PS2, which was considered to be the bigger-budget console release at the time (2005) while Dawn of Sorrow was seen as more of a side-project.

I really liked that review video on Castlevania aria of sorrow, and I liked this one just as much! Good on you for sticking to what you like to make content of, verses popular stuff just for views. It's easy to go for views, but the really great channels make whatever they love most and thrive on it for years to come. At least, that's what I believe.
In any case, great video as always!
