- This is fromSept. 27, 1969 episode of The Johnny Cash Show. Johnny Cash did a awesome job singing The Battle Hymn Of The Republic. What a great and powerful song. We need more songs like this that talk about the love for God and Country.

I was in Basic training when one morning my Drill Sergeant walked in and said " Privates i dont know if any of you know who this is or if any of you care but Jonny Cash passed away last night." Most of the platoon paid no mind however i was crushed! Jonny Cash was truly one of the greatest and there will never be another like him! Hearing him sing the Battle Hymn of the Republic always brings a tear to my eye.
He was revered by those who knew him.
Some folk here in Ireland were crushed by his death
He was a great man
I was deployed to Ecuador when I heard the news. Made sure I went out and had a few drinks for him and made sure the bar owner only played Johnny that night. I had just landed in Turkey when the enroute guys had told me Waylon had died. Funny how the great music you grew up with means so much to you and others around have no clue how great they were.
That's because you have honor. A rare thing nowadays.
I appreciate that he sang it straight, without the inflections and trills that some artists add to classic standards to "improve" them. He demonstrates his talent without ego.
What a humble Christ follower!
Johnny Cash sings this like he really believes it; that's what gives this version such power...
it's beautiful, isn't it?
Johnny really has seen the Glory of the LORD.
Johnny Cash originally wanted to be a gospel singer. There were too many gospel singers at the time for the record companies to want him to do gospel albums so he made his fame on other stuff but deep down inside he'd have chosen to be a moderately well known gospel singer over being a superstar.
I LOVE JOHNNY CASH AND HE SINGS THIS GREAT SONG.IM AM A TRUE PATRIOT PERSON.R.I.P.
John Sanford , not only does he feels the inter vibes of this song but, June surely gave him faith.
Johnny Cash closed his show with a gospel song .a promise he made to his mother. Im glad he did because gospel gave us so many talented singers
Amen
"His truth is marching on"
"He is the same yesterday,today&forever....."
Unimaginable power in music.
Jesus commands to any person who has faith in Him To die To self to be set free. The civil wars and any war between supposed christians just show that men have failed God's commandments through the mouth of Jesus His begotten Son. Jesus said: Matthew 16:25 "For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it".

An American song by an American patriot, Johnny Cash.
He was one of the last true American patriots. He held no hate in his heart for any of his fellow Americans. Can’t say that about a lot of people who call themselves “patriots” today.
A patriot and a liberal.
@P1 Styles And a commie by the far right Republicans. He would be a man without a country by todsys standards.
@P1 Styles, that shows the dumb point of view, that "Democrats" prove today.
I think, that actually real patriots get offended that way by people, who have no knowledge about nationalsocialism, moreover they form their opinions based on political left-sided way of reporting .
I am not from USA, but from Austria, but we have right (!!!) the same problem here!
@P1 Styles As a leftist, this is not true. I disagree with liberals on most everything-- but Johnny Cash cannot be considered right-wing by any sense of the word. Johnny Cash was a leftist.
I am an proud Australian, but! I have always loved this song, never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
I was crying playing this at 4:36 eastern time today, In stellarium the child came through the womb of the woman. revelation 12. Satan has been kicked out of heaven forever! We are going home!
Well, darling, you can apply it to Australia, no? We won't stop you.

He was a great man in person
According to a historian, this song was the most favorite military song of late President Abraham Lincoln who loved it so much that he made repeated requests for the band to play.
Classical music 74 I think it might be Dixie that is the favorite song. Regardless it’s a classic.
i think that he had this and dixie played at his second innauguration

@Funny Valentine have you listened to Elvis (the pelvis) Presley’s rendition?
Ive been playing it for nearly three days straight
Little poor boy from Dyersburg, Arkansas went on to become a national treasure.Beautiful.
There is no such place as Dyersburg Arkansas. Johnny Cash is from Kingsland Arkansas, but for a time lived in Dyess
John R. CASH was born in Kingsland (AR) and raised in Dyess
(AR). His family moved to Dyess when he was 3 years old in 1935. /CD
My late aunt's family (Duncans) were neighbors of the Cash family in Dyess. It was a government project which provided housing and land to Arkansas residents to enable them to become self-sufficient.
Arkansas, we are the original 1 percenters
Was from Kingsland. And its Dyer Arkansas. Take it from a local been to both towns
My great grandfather was one of the lucky ones who came home after the Civil War..George W. Eads. Union musician from Iowa.
My great grandfather John Medium Nixon from the Indiana 42nd, and he, too, lived through the Civil War. He mustered in in 1861 and was discharged in 1865. He was in it the entire length of the war and somehow lived through it. He was in the infantry. He lived through 16 major battles and numerous skirmishes. He was a sharp shooter for General Sherman. Thank the Lord that he was able to came home and father our clan.
Similar here. Great grand dad James and his dad Jesse went south together. They lived but the elder's health was broken. Jim studied medicine later and practiced some with a younger brother. Another was Union cavalry. They left the war where they found it. What a difference a President makes.
3rd Great Grandfather served in the 32nd Missouri Line Infantry for the Union with his brother. His brother (my 4th great uncle) was shot and killed at a battle leading up to Vicksburg. My grandfather was injured and sent home. For Union and for liberty!
Amen! Salute!!

Likewise for myself also, brother. My father was a WWII Veteran of Europe and North Africa. This song choked me up to tears thinking of the hell of war he and others went thru for our freedom.
Eagle-eyed fans will recognize The Statler Brothers backing JC. What an abundance of riches on one stage. The world will never see the likes of these great men again.
I thought there were more backup singers than needed, but maybe it was a package deal.
Thank you dear God for allowing Johnny Cash to be amongst here on earth.
Which 'god' might that be? There are over 3000 gods and goddesses worshipped (equally vehemently and passionately) across Planet earth every single day. The one that any particular person believes in is primarily driven by (i) Geography and (ii) What their parents told them prior to the age of 12yrs.
Hmmh... Let me guess... You speak English, but aren't British? You seem to favour a brand of music favoured by Americans?...So...err.. Cameron Lyon typical atheist bullshit. He's gotta be an asshole to anyone who has even a modicum of faith.
Whichever one allowed us to have a Johnny Cash of course. LoL
Oh great. There's always got to be one of THESE types. Look, if someone wants to thank God for something, who the bloody hell are you to tell them what they can and can't believe? Why do you even leave these comments anyway? You think this is an argument that nobody has ever heard and you're shedding light into the darkness here? You're actually parroting commonly repeated statements that have already been refuted if you take a moment to do a Google search. If you're an atheist in this day in age.... it's because you're being LAZY

This brings tears to my eyes. Song by a Great Johnny Cash who turned his life around after problems in his youth. A great man indeed!
When Johnny Cash first started recording, there were a few Civil War veterans still alive.
There was just very few probably less than 3 the last one died in 1956 and the last one who saw combat died 1953 they were both in the union. Cash’s career started in 1954.

One was a confederate I believe died in the 50’s sometime then
@@curiousentertainment3008 crazy to think how the war was started in 1861, the war ended in 1865, and the last one died in 1956. the last survivor was at least 95 years old, and that's if they were 1 years old when they started. you had to be about 16 to fight in the war, and 95+16 is 111. The last survivor was around a hundred and eleven years old. what a fighter!

It's very sad what has been happening to America, and a shame what's being taught to the youth of this country. I know this statement has been uttered for eternity, but how much more can it (America) take?
My father was a 1972 U.S. Army veteran who served his country in Germany. He is my greatest hero. As I watched this video, I had a vision that brought tears to my eyes. I can see myself at his burial service, standing by his casket while the band plays this song, and I give my father a thank you salute for not only being my hero, but also being a wonderful father to me and my four siblings, and being a wonderful husband to my mother.
68corvette08 and a thank you for him for his service from me sincerely Dillon
Thank you, Dillon. My father is my best friend, and I cherish every day that I spend with him.
SALUTE.
Big thanks to your dad, though I'm sorry about his passing. He's a hero! Whereabout in Germany did he serve? My mother was born on a U.S. Army Base in Frankfurt, Germany, in the 1950's while my grandfather was serving.
68corvette08 excuse me;but what exactly are you pointing at. It's what you do not know , do you think USA got in the second world war because of justice? ??? You are wrong. You have no understanding of history. Omg. Please wake up
Only thing wrong is before the song started. This was a union song. Both sides did not sing this
My father served in the U.S. military for almost 30 years. I heard this song a few times growing up. This is my favorite rendition and it probably always will be.
Did anyone recognize the male quartet? Those are the Statler Brothers. This a thoroughly awesome rendition of this song.
Those are my hometown boys singing there. Of course I recognize them. :)
Factoid, Johnny Cash is the first person in the West to hear of Joseph Stalin's death. He was working as a radio operator in the Air Force when he monitored the first radio intercepts from the then Soviet Union. God had his hand on Johnny Cash in many different ways.
I want the goodness of America, like this, back; old patriotism where performers spoke freely and proudly of God and America. 💕🇺🇸💕
Me, too!
What makes you think there's less patriotism now?
Maybe it's less fervent now because our young are not being subjected to the draft.
I truly dislike the notion that back then was better than now.
Sure, it was better in my 20s since I didn't have this 😈osteoarthritis.😈
No current performers have the guts to perform this song or express these beliefs.
As an Australian this is one of the greatest songs ever, and unfortunately in both America and Australia the mob are taking over.
@@dropbear6740 don't give up hope. God isn't done with our respective nations just yet, friend. The enemy and his agents will NOT have their way but will have a GIANT bill to pay back starting next year for the ground they illegally stole.
That is a BS comment. Almost all do. You just may not agree with them. lol. Oh.. I get it - it has to be a Christian belief... It irritates me when people grandstand their beliefs with this attitude. To me, Christianity is between you and your Lord, and mine is not between you and my Lord and me. In the end we are all judged - hoping he looks on us both favorably though.
@@dropbear6740 What are we talking about ... the mob on Wall Street? In the richest country in the world - 35% of the wealth is concentrated in about 1% of the people and the bottom 50% have about 1.5% of the wealth...10.6% experience food insecurity, as in they don't know where their next meal is coming from and that number grows to 13.6% when there are kids in the home.... I could go on and on but you wonder why there are mobs forming? There are homeless everywhere while people are arguing about who has the biggest house and buying glamour houses at an ever increasing rate... If you are wondering why mobs are forming Look to the 1% that were in France in 1781 if you have any questions. The mob is right - organized legal crime is what it is.
My father William P. Smith absolutely loved Johnny Cash. He served in WW2 in the pacific on LSD301. He was the radio operator and machine gunner when unloading troops and equipment on the beaches.
He would go see Johnny live any time he could when I was kid.

It's "let us DIE to make men free"! Why do they never sing that anymore?
i don't know, but when i sing it, i do say DIE
I hear it sung both ways, but I agree with you, DIE is the correct way, it is what Julia Ward Howe wrote her lyrics - and who would know better!
Well as Patton might have sang it "let them DIE to make men free!"
Thays the only way I know it
My Great-great, great Uncle died in that war. And my Great, Great, Great Grandfather brought his body home after the battle he was killed in. They joined together, served together, & returned home together; tho "Grandpa Reed" had to return again to battle.
Yet people think its racist. But rapping about rape and drugs is so fucking cool.
This should be the US national anthem.
They're both great!
it was the anthem of the north for most the civil war
Thinking about the same thing majority people don't even know the national anthem written by Francis Scott Keyes abroad a brattish ship bombing Ft McHenry during the War of 1812. This songs means more to the Republic and Patriots.

I'm a bit skeptical about the statement that both sides sang this song, at least this version of it. Especially since Julia Ward Howe (the lyricist) was an abolitionist.
It is possible that confederates sung this without knowing its true meaning because the song slaps so hard.

May we all pray for the lives of the brave Hong Kong protestors who protested against tyranny in favor of there god given right to speak freely, elect who they see fit, so future generations of there sons and daughters may be free from communist tyranny

Indeed. Hong Kong is on the front lines in the eternal fight against tyranny. All free peoples must support them in this moment of truth against vanity.
Amen. I just got a Hong Kong flag to proudly fly beneath my US flag. It seems that hope is lost in the times we're living in but His truth will prevail. Unrelated, I just got a puppy and named him Cash, his black and white fur looks like he's wearing a suit so I found it rather fitting. I'm a millennial but Johnny Cash has been a saving grace these past few months of riots, loss of jobs, COVID-19... He helps to restore faith in people, singing about things that matter, that's why I love him.

Stand for freedom....stand with Hong Kong.
Russ S they are all a bunch of hypocrites. “The government/police are completely corrupt and are killing minorities because they are racist fascists” while also claiming there are no reason for guns and the only reason you would need a gun is if you are a psychopath who wants blood while at the same time supporting armed black militias. They set up the chaz/chop claiming it’s a actual free state without any borders/cops/racism while in the meantime they barricade the streets so certain people can’t enter, have there own armed police force, mob rule which leads to innocents being beat, and dictator that propped himself up. Anyone really think he would have given up power if that thing started gaining large amounts of land and power? No he would have become just another communist dictator, to argue against that is just plain dumb. They protest and riot against “fascism” while limiting speech, canceling people who don’t prescribe to there idiotic communist/anarchist agenda, call anyone who disagrees a racist/fascist/sexist blah blah blah. This kind of shit is what leads to genocide, it doesn’t matter what you believe or what you have done if you deny them power or the moral high ground they cancel you, which will develop into street executions and gulags if there influence grows and the democrat party keeps aiding with them and enabling there toxic behavior. They are the real fascists
Say what you like about Johnny Cash being a Christian, at least he had the 'bowels' to sing such Hymns and Gospel songs about Jesus Christ. He did this against the wishes of his producers and publicists, who thought it would harm his popularity. Despite those objections, he did it anyway, even putting out Gospel Albums as did Elvis. When I look on RUclips and see a lot of so called popular singers, such as Justin Bieber or Jay Z who claim to be Christians. I fail to see any fruit of this here. Johnny Cash was by no means a perfect man, but who is but God.
I don't believe in God anymore, but I still enjoy listening to Johnny Cash and Carrie Underwood sing Christian songs. They actually have respect and reverence for the words they are singing, and I think it makes the performance better. I don't like listening to disingenuous pop singers butcher a classic trying to get themselves over.

Preserve what way of life? When the anthem was written, people still owned other human beings as property. Is that the way of life you're wanting preserved? The fuck are you even talking about? We're far better off as a society preserving the well being of said society and it's members than we are glorifying some song.

He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on, His truth is marching
Glory, glory, Hallelujah! Glory, glory, Hallelujah!
Glory, glory, Hallelujah! His truth is marching on
I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps
His day is marching on
Hallelujah, Hallelujah!
In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me
As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free
While God is marching on
Glory, glory, Hallelujah! Glory, glory, Hallelujah!
Glory, glory, Hallelujah! His truth is marching on!
His truth is marching on! And on and on and on and on and on
