As a longtime viewer who works near some of these shops and went to uni near the others, this is a very wild crossover episode and I love it sm!! These exact charity shops were a huge part of my secondhand fashion journey, as was this channel, so this is a lovely little full circle moment 💜

Living in the UK, charity shopping is one of the most hit or miss activities. Like you get to learn which ones the good ones are but there’s absolutely no logic to it 😅

You should see if there’s a kilo sale next time you come to the UK - they’re more warehouse/bigger space vibes and you pay like £15 for a KILO of clothes… they’re great and usually have loads of vintage pieces

Hi! I’m italian, but i’m in england very often, and i love charity shops but the best are in small towns or cities, not in london.. in London charity shops are more expensive and chaotic, i found gems in the smaller ones, i’m in love with london of course ❤

    • @micaaacs

Assolutamente d'accordo! Peccato che invece in Italia i negozi vintage/usato siano così costosi. Si compra bene solo nei mercati.

Oh my gosh! I’m from London + used to live in Cambridge and literally know all of the places you went to! North and central London is super expensive for thrifting, but next time you should go to south London places like Lewisham and Peckham car boot. I would happily be a tour guide! Love your finds ❤

I LOVE charity shops. I personally find it nicer to have the smaller sized stores as I tend to find the big thrift shops too overwhelming. When I lived in Oxford I loved popping in and finding the best pieces for a few pounds!! And indeed when you go to smaller towns you will find lower prices.

I’d love to see you style these pieces! Also the collared t shirt is from Mango. I’m not sure if you have Mango in the US but it’s in the same family as H&M and Monki, but higher prices and higher quality, aimed at a more mature audience (ie late 20s+), kind of like Zara’s workwear!

Also yeah in the uk we have a difference between charity shops and retro and vintage shops. They are just expensive charity shops thou 🤣 the best ones are I small towns around the outside of London the beds, bucks and shires, also some good student areas. I shop kilo retro warehouses sometimes but rarely shop the small boutique vintage shops as its overpriced. Because rich students can now afford it and the the whole y2k want to wear tracksuits that make them look a little chavy 🤣

I’ve never been second hand shopping in the uk because I moved when I was little and I always wondered what it was like and it seems pretty much the same as in New Zealand. It’s mostly small second hand shops like that here and they’re almost exclusively donated to by middle age and older women. All the stuff is like older lady clothes or it’s really damaged. And no vintage stuff, it’s all like modern middle aged women clothing. I think most people here will have hand me downs if the item is still in good condition to younger siblings or younger cousins. Also, in general I think we have less cute clothes. Like Target in America has genuinely cute trendy clothes, our closest equivalent (The Warehouse) never has cute clothes. It’s always like 2 years behind in trends and also the clothes feel like they’re mostly for older women. So it seems like it’s pretty similar in the UK. Maybe a bit better because regular clothing stores tend to have more trendy clothing in the UK than in New Zealand.
I went second hand shopping at 4 charity shops here with my mum and grandma and out of all the stores I only found one skirt that I liked lol. Luckily it fit me so I got it. That was the only item I found out of everything that I liked. My mum and grandma found stuff though because it was all their style.

Yesterday I went second hand shopping in New Zealand with my mum and damn the shops here suck. Most second hand shops here are the small charity shops in the video but they basically only have clothes for older women. There are a couple big second hand stores in my city similar to American ones (they are in old factory workshop buildings I think) so we went to one of them because they tend to have a bit more trendy clothes and they actually have more than 4 pairs of shoes. Well, it turns out they are super expensive now. Almost all the items were nearly full price. I found some cute stuff but I just couldn’t afford it. And the stuff that was nearly full price wasn’t even in necessarily good condition, some of them were definitely worn and close to breaking. I found a cute cropped chunky cardigan from I think Cotton On but it was like $20. That’s tons for a second hand cardigan. The pricing was pretty inconsistent because there was some stuff that was reasonably priced so I guess there’s like two pricers in the back competing to price things reasonably or overpriced. Like I found a nice sweater vest that I did get (it was literally the only sweater vest in the whole store) which was like pastel rainbow, from Cotton On too and it was basically brand new condition and it cost $8. They also changed their changing rooms and made them super small, like it would of been physically impossible for 4 people to stand in there, 3 people would barely fit if you were squeezed in, so you can imagine how much space you have to move around. I don’t usually feel claustrophobic but I did then and it genuinely felt a bit hard to breathe. And they also changed from 6 items at a time to 3 items which was a pain because I had a bunch of items and I had to get dressed again after 3 items to go get more and then you had to wait in line again, you weren’t allowed to keep a changing room to yourself. And despite being the size of American thrift stores, there are no shopping carts. Never seen one at a second hand store here. I had like 12 items including a big coat and they were killing my hand. I am now just realising that the bruising I noticed on my hand last night is from holding those clothes. Also, at second hand stores here the racks are always packed super tight which makes it really hard to go through all the items and look at them properly. Sorry for the rant, I doubt anyone will read the whole thing. I’m just sick of our terrible thrift stores here and I want to go thrifting in America so bad.

We have the big thrift stores here like Goodwill but we also have a lot of small (often vintage) thrift stores too. They look like the shops in this video... The ones here often favor stuff from the 20s to the 70s / 80s but you can find all sorts of stuff in them. Higher prices of course too.
