- Buying cigarettes in the UK is to become illegal for anyone born after 2009 - for their whole life. Lawmakers have approved a government plan to create a smoke-free generation. The law will make the sale of tobacco products, but not the act of smoking, illegal. Tobacco use is the UK's single biggest preventable cause of death, killing 80,000 people every year.

I love this BBC English. The way it is presented
The decision to ban the purchasing of cigarettes has received backlash from people who think it is nuts. Those people will try to derail the smoking ban.
It is about us losing democracy and the right to choose being taken away from people by them in power. They will expand the ban age upwards when it is in, then what is next for a ban ? Alcohol, meat, sugar, chocolate, coffee etc ? The politicians are taking peoples rights way everywhere, they are going over the top with dictating things.

I openly promote black market tobacco, thankfully these new laws will increase the piracy and smuggling effort. Britain sells tobacco dirt cheap to Europe, do you think they'll stop selling to the rest of the world, while its own citizens are treated like twats?
You should definitely invite Neil to your karaoke birthday party! Neil loves singing! He sang in at least two episodes of The English We Speak and in a Facebook story!
So, if you were born after 2009, you've officially been banned from picking up a smoking habit - looks like the future is smoke-free and full of clean lungs!
Just like how when they banned drugs, drugs went away, definitely no black markets or anything, out definitely was not easier for me to obtain cannabis than alcohol when I was a teenager, the way on drugs has been so effective that you never hear of anyone using cocaine or heroin anymore, can barely even remember what those are. Lol
It’s an act of violence on freedom of choice. Everyone has a right to choose whether they wanna smoke or not. Plus, anyonw who’s elder can buy you cigarettes if you ask them outside the store. Simple, just like teens do it.
Backlash, derail, nuts
Best channel to learn vocabulary! Love you guys! ☺ 😘
Happy birthday, Beth🎉
I confess by the context you might understand some words. Anwyays I am learning lots of words by watching this channel. Keep up the nice work, BBC.
Happy birthday, Beth! However, you should invite Neil, otherwise he might be upset!
Very interesting always
I appreciate it.❤
Interesting topic and news about the habit of smoking.Julio retired teacher. Dolores.Argentina
I like the chemistry between you guys
Thank you so much.
It's nuts not to invite Neil to your birthday party, Beth! You need to invite him now! You should also invite George, Sian, Feifei, Tim, Tom, Rob, Georgie, Dylan, Jiaying, and Phil! Also, could you invite me too?🥺🥰
Thanks. The word 'Derail' reminds me of the phrase 'back on track.' . Also you said 'nuts' is not used in front of nouns.. But 'nutcase'.. is it an exception?
thank you 🎉
As always informative lesson, thank you ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice lesson ❤
Can you add synonyms which you offering as an alternative such as sabotage for derail at the end of the headlines
VERY GOOD JOB GUYS. LOVE YOU SO MUCH. I'M A UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR. AND I LOVE YOU SO MUCH
Shouldn't you be more worried about drugs than cigarettes?
No, drugs make U stupid and easier to control how you vote
Why worry about either when alcohol is so dangerous and so widely accepted.
It is hilarious how Neil keeps mentioning the idea of him not being invited to the party throughout the video. 😂😂
Beth, do invite him, or else it can cause some backlash.😂
In all seriousness, the video is awesome. Thank you for this lesson. I really appreciate it.
and thank you for your lovely comment :)
Absolutely great idea, well done Rishi
Could anyone say full name of interviewers, please ?
Cómo va aprender uno así sin explicación es😢 solo los que ya tienen idea aprenderan
Outstanding
Hi from Nepal 🇳🇵
Welcome I have a friend from there
와 진짜 좋은 영어 교육 영상이네요.
Wish I never smoked a cigarette in my life
Thats good me either 😊😊😊
❤❤
Absolutely love it. That helps me so much to get what the news means. Really appreciate it 🥰
Sunak actually has reasonable ideas, others don't care about the nation's health, they care only about the money(. The presenters of this podcast are great!
lol. Neil is so humorous that he makes me laugh. Plz! Invite him to your party, Beth! It seems like he gonna cry❤
Remember the prohibition. What of those who lost their preffered amuse? They would ultimately find a way to assuage their compulsion. But that would be a bit violent adventure for smokers to step in.
You should invite Neil for your party 😂😂
Is it ok to write: “ My deadly illness has derailed my plan to visit Asia.” ? Thank you 🙏
Brilliant! I think that all countries should undertake this law everywhere around the world. Non only for those who were born later than 2008 or 2009. Also for all young people who were born in twenty first century! The next step is to forbid the whole industry producings cigarettes!❤
Yeah. Because unlimited government control over someone's freedom is always a good thing. You are nuts
I can't agree with you more.
Well they be as effective on preventing people gaining access to tobacco as they currently are at preventing drug distribution😂😂😂
@@5688gamble Shh, don't tell them, you're about to get a new car from a second revenue stream!
I just noticed that English cricketer Jonny Bairstow and Neil have a similar look. @Neil, do you play cricket?
Great explanation of the latest news related to tobacco ban.
Thanks!
Any one who was born after 2009, can not smoke, it was banned by uk government, despite its incredible decision its got a backlash from some people.
Secondary smoking in London public places and bus stops is causing more damage to public health. Public smoking should also be banned. It is so hard to stand up on bus stops in London and breath fresh air without secondary smoking.
Smoking at bus stops is already banned, there are signs up and everything. It is just impossible to enforce, just like drug laws don't work- I could but any drug I wanted, they are everywhere. It is a stupid idea, do you not think the people who are allowed to purchase cigarettes won't sell them to younger smokers? How will the police enforce this? Will they ignore as many adults as they do in pursuit of cannabis smokers too do it? It is bonkers, and I don't like smoking.
Vocabulary from this learning English -
Backlash -strong rejection of an idea
Derail -stop a plan
Nuts-crazy
Come on Neil 😂 Looks a real situation that you're upset not being invited by Beth hahahahaha
Excellent vocabulary! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Some Alternatives:
Sabotage
Scupper
Wreck
Outcry
I wasn't invited either!
People trying banning this smoking already before, but unsuccessfully.
Under no circumstances would it be legal nor democratic to have, one day, a 30-years-old British citizen or a UK resident able to buy a product and at the very same time a 29-years-old citizen unable legally to buy tobacco. It's an absolute madness!
😂 thanks so much 👏👏👏👍
Coming from Seinfeld: "... They are nuts with temperature"
Not watching this channel every week, which is nuts.
Ha! Maybe it's time to start?
Let smokers chew tobacco instead, chewing tobacco produces zero secondhand smoke and users chew entirely at their own risks similar to betel nuts.
Not only that. American federal study, Fisher et al 2019, shows that smokeless tobacco use noticeably lowers mortality among men.
So it’s actually a healthy habit.
Save your lungs, rock the gums ❤️ snus helped me quit smoking after 15 years. Much love to Sweden!
7:15 Berth, pls invite Neil to your party
Trying to derail the government's plant to evacuate people in the flooded areas is nuts for sure
Nuts, bananas and crackers is a good idea for a casual meal, I think. Or is it nuts, bananas and crackers?

So much for freedom and choice. More control
Good 👍
😂😂😂😂why Beth didn’t invited Neil to her birthday ?
It’s pretty easy to grow tobacco
It’s not surprising that the party didn’t support and derail that proposal (project) about smoking. It’s absolutely undemocratic to resolve the problem this way.
Went out( of) the window.Gone to the dogs.
💐💐💐
Certainly, smoking is a serious for health wether its consuming by young person or adult. I am recommending to increase the age of banning upto eighteen.
This nice channel is about learning English but I see so many soap opera aficionados here that derail towards "wow! personification" syndrome.
Can't concentrate on key phrases because the nut-propaganda around smoking is causing me some gastritis.
When I was young all the centenarians were smokers. And they often used to smoke genuine tobacco rolled inside whatever paper (sometimes plasticized one).
Years ago I was talking to an American pulmonologist that was trying to sell me the same story about the smoking incidence. I do not care if it sounds presumptions, but I am immune to demagogy much more than to tobacco effects. I told her that she should show me a statistics based on just tobacco effects, taking out the drunkards, toxics, those that smoke more than 40 cigarettes, those that live in a highly polluted areas, etc. I simply knew they were putting everything inside, while the rightly interpreted statistics showed that the incidence had to do with other agents, especially other kinds of air pollution.
I remember a scandal, that went gigantic or microscopic depending on the country's media, about PM (not the Prime Minister) putting ammoniac and chocolate inside tobacco to make people smoke more (because bronchial airways automatically close in case of difficulty, while ammoniac and chocolate opens them).
Meantime, before the scandal broke out, they were doing the same anti-tobacco propaganda, but were failing short when it comes to checking what they put into tobacco of cigarettes.
This last one? I'll repeat the one that I made-up during the covid times : It's all hocus-pocus for the sake of shifting focus.
In my culture and research, tobacco is a sacrament and medicine, therefore forcing Me to quit using it in any way is a persecution.
Thanks bbc !!
Unless it is banned for everyone of any age it won’t work
backlash= out cry = objection= disapprove= discouragement= a strong rejection of idea ,,, nuts=crazy
All iniciatives are welcome but prohibition is not the way. Smoking is a personal decision. Now smokers have to hide. Banned smoking in public places is ridiculous. Maybe thinking in regulating the spaces where is allowed or not sound better
good decision
❤❤❤💕
Who says tobacco is more dangerous than alcohol? Why bans tobacco but no alcohol? Even more why not ban others type of drugs? Films from Hollywood show us teenagers drinking alcohol and consuming drugs happily "without consequences" for their health, but tobacco is the enemy. We are living in a hypocrite society.
The problem is dissatisfaction people have about reality, and drugs, alcohol, etc are means to escape it. The problem is more profound than banning tobacco.
Hopefully it will follow that alcohol will be banned too.
I just watched amy Winehouse film in cinema and she died from alcohol.
My mum and brother are alcoholics. And their physical and mental health is really being negatively impacted.
@@HumbleBee123I could become a moonshiner! Or the next Al Capone! Great idea, more markets for criminals to dominate! Or streets are awash with drugs. Alcohol is extremely easy to make, tobacco is as easy to grow as cannabis, without all of the odour associated with cannabis. Tobacco will still be easy to obtain for anyone born before 2009. Smoking rates are in decline, prohibition is unnecessary. Improving people's lives with better services and infrastructure would do a lot more good to bring down the rates of substance misuse than nana and more money wasted on policing something that you can never make a dent in! Honest health campaigns do more than prohibition.
What an educating program, I like it.
people are going to do illogical stupid and undermining behaviors.. that much is factual and documented. among them, is smoking, addictive drugs, alcohol, violence and crime.. you would like to ban all of those, smoking, drugs, alcohol, stupid behavior and crime... but are you really being realistic ?
A valuable lesson as always 😊
Imran Khan faced backlash from establishment when he wanted to eradicate corruption. The establishment wanted to derail his plans and they are still trying to do so . The establishment's policy is nuts
I think it's an excellent idea to ban smoking for young people cuz smoking is very dangerous for health. I would really like to be copied that idea, and that idea was applied in Argetnine law
Iam smoker
there was a huge backlash from aspiring migrants when the immigration authorities tried to derail the current immigration systems as some people claim it's nuts to change the system after many people paid money to get this level
i like both of youuu... super neil and beth ❤
Nuts isn't nuts. I like nuts

You are fit for gorgi
Um Sorry english Natural speakers would say, " its a nutts idea", just tipping you straight ;)
Smoking 🚬 is injurious to health nevertheless let me give a packet of B & H Switch.😂
They allow Marihuana in the same time here but talk about banning tobacco , smoking a joint without filter you got 1000 time more cancer risk.
You can use snuff tobacco e-cigarette chewing-gum Ionos heat device without the blue cancer smoke 90% less toxic
Banning is the cancer by itself and it doesnt stop by the right stuff.
Adult people got the right to decide by them self what they consume and alchohol by the way is more dangerous then tobacco with the new modern sets.
Too many times mentiomed BBS, it is wasting learners time
😸👍👍👌👌👏👏👏
A prohibition for smoking would be useful for everyone, starting IT and Army contractors ... .

I do all my best to listen your video without seeing your speech on the screen, but I find all the time difficult to understand you.
You can turn the subtitles on to help :)!
Lame
UK has made a wise choice, it will have three fallouts : billions of savings in social security because people will live longer and therefore pay more taxes and insurance tuitions. Second, UK will save on health spending, not dealing with the devastating impact of tobacco on human health, three : UK will re allocate the tobacco import fund to another, more constructive thing. I hope that similar laws will target processed foods and sugar added.
👍 Excellent writing! 🤓 We just have one quick correction - we 'make a choice' instead of 'doing a choice', so we would say 'The UK has made a wise choice'.
@@bbclearningenglish thank you for correcting me
I think that it's fair that the government plays a role in minimizing the possibility that the young generation starts smoking.
Those who judge this initiative as nuts and aim to derail it either are smokers or belong to the tobacco lobbies
It is nuts though, and I dislike tobacco! Prohibition doesn't work, have we learned nothing? Alcohol prohibition failed on the US and black markets ran riot, the ear on drugs is a continuing failure and black markets are running riot. How will they enforce this ban? Police can't even show up within an hour if a knife man is trying to kick in your door, let alone to enforce bans on igniting various plant matter and inhaling it. We spend a fortune on nonviolent drug "crime" but drugs are now prevent than ever! They may wish to actually do something about the misery, poverty and inequality that leads into poor mental health and addiction, nope, we will just ask the understaffed, underpaid and overworked police force to take on another burden banning things we don't like.
How Nazi of You.
Very undemocratic way of solving social issues
❤❤
Nice share❤
