Shucked or Kimberly Akimbo and I’ll be happy. Only one I’d be surprised about is New York, New York because that book was a disaster and none of the songs other than the title song stuck for me.
I have seen 4 out of the 5 so far They are all very different and great in their own way so hard to choose but I think Some Like it Hot may take it - but it’s really anyone’s game - I’m hoping to see & Juliet ASAP
If we go by the trend of the past 26 years, only Some Like It Hot, Kimberly, and Shucked have a shot at winning because they were the only ones nominated for Best Direction of A Musical. No show since Titanic in 1997 has won Best Musical without at least nomination for Direction, and & Juliet and NYNY both missed out.
I really hope Shucked or Some Like It Hot wins. I like Kimberly Akimbo, but it didn't really standout as a groundbreaking or year defining show. & Juliet is a great watch, but it's more for entertainment value. NYNY looks and sounds like the definition of tony bait: hitting all the cliches for a cash grab (not to say the performers are terrible, just the book is).
Having seen all of these but Shucked: 1. Whoever nominated New York, New York clearly hadn't seen it. That was genuinely the worst musical I've ever seen, the book being the primary problem (the singing and acting and dancing were good, but there was no written throughline, the story was tissue thin and contrived, and the overall structure was nonexistence). 2. Kimberly Akimbo was aggressively fine. It was incredibly middle of the road to make it as inoffensive as possible, and ultimately was... fine. I do not understand the overwhelming praise it has received. 3. &Juliet is just plain fun, but is a pretty simplistic, popcorn-movie-equivalent of a musical. I think it's a great show to see, and am glad it was nominated, though I do not think it should win because... 4. Some Like It Hot was the best show I've seen all year by far. The climactic dance sequence at the end of Act II alone should be enough for this to get best musical, but that's ignoring the rest of it which was well-written, well-designed, and well-performed. This is the deserved winner (unless Shucked is truly amazing, I still want to see that one!)
Haven’t seen Shucked either but from what I’ve heard Alex Newell has been getting standing ovations every night. I think even if Shucked doesn’t win best musical which it probably won’t, Alex has a solid chance at winning best actor.
@@islandeatssand684 I disagree! As someone who has seen shucked, I really think it has it in the bag. It's so funny, and every single song is a hit. I was SHOCKED Caroline Innerbichler was not nominated for best actress, because she was outstanding. I've seen the majority of the nominees, and confidently, I can say shucked deserves it the most. I do think Akimbo has a shot... which I disagree with because I was not a fan when I saw it.
having seen none of the shows but just this video...I feel like musicals have slipped back into cliche's. The best musicals these days are one that are far outside the mold: Hamilton, Book of Mormon, Come From Away, etc. I always feel like there are musicals that are "just musicals" -- every song sounding roughly the same. They are entertaining, and a lot of fun, but not really exciting, interesting nor original. Then there are musicals that offer something new and fresh to the scene. In every instance, I prefer these.
Well, I'm pulling for &Juliet or Shucked, I suppose. I have to admit, I have fully thrown my lot in with one of the revivals, which is definitely a first for me!
It's probably between that and Kimberly Akimbo for best musical. It'll be interesting to see how the awards are split; sort of a Fun Home-American in Paris dynamic
Is it really fair to count &Juliet as an original musical since it uses pre-existing compositions? Shouldn't there be a separate category like "Best Jukebox Musical"....
I haven't seen any of these, but I'm hoping to see And Juliet sometime in the next month. I've heard the soundtrack to it, and that on it's own should be enough to win.
Some Like It Hot was just wonderful! However, either Shucked or Kimberly Akimbo will win. NYNY received almost unanimosly bad reviews. I'm surprised it was nominated...unless it is out of tribute to John Kander.
Unanimous only if you ignore the positive reviews at WSJ, Variety, The New Yorker, Entertainment Weekly, and more? Its a delightful show and tons of people enjoy it immensely! A show doesn't get 9 Tony Nominations without merit, if you haven't seen it I would 100% recommend you do!
Yup Let's Be Bad was written for smash but they have the same song writing team on some like it hot, maybe that's why they rewrote it to fit the musical
Forcing myself to listen to all of these before June 11th so I can best judge which one deserves to win (won't be listening to & juliet im sorry but i have a burning hatred for jukebox musicals. I assume its good!)
It wont feel right for & juliet to win as it is a jukebox musical therefore making 70% of it unoriginal. Like, I get if the story is amazing but winning best **musical** with unoriginal music just doesn't feel right.
My vote is for Some Like It Hot. Such a fun and fantastic show. Was smiling the entire time. 😍
I hope the corn musical wins

I agree. All the others seem too self-referential or empty spectacle. Give me a good, solid book musical any day.

Come back and let us know what you think of shucked. I did get to see Some Like it Hot and thought it was amazing
Kimberly Akimbo should win.
akimbo for the win!!!!!!
Ah yes, Shucked: Alex Newell
Yes! I only know Alex from Glee, so I had to look it up to make sure, but it's so cool to see them (? pronouns) working on Broadway.

there aren’t enough jukebox musicals in a year to make a separate category
Jazz, New York, agricultural corn stories, we really in the new 20s of Broadway.
Kimberley Akimbo is def gonna win but I do hope Shucked and Some like it hot takes some other awards cause they’re great too

After the awards some show will immediately announce their closing dates. Some of the winners will become unaffordable and unavailable.
They already announced that the revival of Bob Fosse's Dancin' is closing mid-May. Zero Tony nominations for that show 😕
That’s so sad.
