19-year-old Naomi Osaka defeats defending champion Angelique Kerber | US Open 2017 Round One

- Some matches become more meaningful with time. The Naomi Osaka-Angelique Kerber opening-round meeting at the 2017 US Open is certainly one of those such encounters.
Not quite a changing of the guard, it nonetheless brought together the defending champion, Kerber, and the following year's champ, Osaka. The unseeded challenger, 19 years of age at the time, ended the German's title defense in clinical fashion in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
It was Osaka's first career Top-10 win, and provided a glimpse into the world-beating talent of the Japanese-talent that would soon see her crowned queen in New York, and within 17 months, claim the world No. 1 ranking, after she followed up her 2018 US Open triumph with another trophy at the 2019 Australian Open.
Kerber, meanwhile, recovered beautifully from her first-round stumble and an overall down year in 2017, which saw the former world No. 1 drop to No. 19 by year's end. At the first three majors of 2018, she reached the Australian Open semifinals and the French Open quarters, before winning her third career Slam at Wimbledon.

These opening round matches at the US Tennis Center are great. The crowd are real tennis fans, respectful and knowledgeable. The vibe is so relaxed. Then by the final the crowd is all 1%ers from Long Island, and celebrities, and rude crazies.
I really like the commentary here from the australian announcer. She gives actual strategy and tennis insights. Like how she compared two of Naomi's coach's other students Alicia Molik and Sam Stousr would work patterns to set up their powerful forehands and how Naomi should set up cross courts in order to get an opening to go up the line as both her forehand AND backhand are weapons. It's insights like this that make announcers worth their salt.
Totally agree. No bias just constructive deliberate commentary based on court management. Excellent analysis.
This was the match that really made me take notice of Naomi. While she did make some noise at the AO a year prior, this was her message to the field IMO. To totally dismantle the defending champ Angie like that was incredible.
And the following year, she wins it. Quite remarkable rise!
And now she surpassed kerber in slams tally.
@@StefanChemist
But she is now crazy. Naomi is perhaps the most talented player since Serena.
@@benthekeeshond545 couldve won 8 slams by now if shr cared

I think she wants to win but could not fully commit to tennis. After winning her 1st 2 GSs, she departed with her coach who helped her ascend to the top of tennis. She did that in a disrespectful and ungrateful way due to over-confidence and completely overestimated herself. Credit her, she rebounded and won her 3rd and 4th GSs Afterward, associated herself with the wrong people. Those people are at the border of being normal/criminals. I am sure if she associated herself with that kind of people when growing up, she would not even become a professional tennis player.
@@deepakmahajan170 and how do you know she doesn’t
The beginnings of a superstar in the making. I believe a lot of tennis fans knew that Naomi was going to make a huge splash and become the next dominator. She's now back at #3 in the WTA rankings and just won her 2nd U.S. Open title with a total of 3 grand slammers in the bag and she's still only 21. WOW!
And now she's got four and back up to #2 in the rankings.
@@tomsawyer9403 she was #3 before the Aussie and now she's only #2? She should've shot back up to #1? Did Ashley have that many more points than she did?
@@KnowTrentTimoy Barty now has 9186 to Osaka's 7835.
@@tomsawyer9403 Wait, that doesn't sound right. Iga Swiatek is the defending French winner (2020) and Barty chose Not to defend her title from 2019. So, how can Ashley have that many more points? Is the WTA letting Ashley keep her French slam winning points due to the pandemic reasons?
She wields that racket like a sword dealing one deadly blow after another..tiring and out maneuvering her opponent. Her ancient heritage and the power it carries for a 1000 generations coursing through her veins. She defeats her opponent and though she is happy she shows humility and respects her opponent in the traditional way of a slight nod to acknowledge her efforts. Behold Naomi Osaka..a tennis samurai
naomi osaka is a victim crying hypocrite
while your narrative is a bit florid, I, too, appreciate how Naomi plays the game and I love her blended heritage. She's also a hoot at press conferences; her bashful, yet candid, demeanor makes her seem like such a regular person, while the astute observer knows she's a Superhero Wearing Mondrian Attire. (They BOTH are wearing the same seasonal line from their primary sponsor, and it ROCKS.)
@@mehdiarif364 woke, whatever that means
I'm not a fans of Osaka but we need to give her big respect how shes trying to be the Next GOAT 👍👍 she's so powerful 💪💪💪💪
And now she's unbeatable ☺
I can almost say , a flawless performance by Naomi, very very talented indeed...and true enough the next year she proved it...
Please upload Naomi Vs Keys (2018 US Open SF)
Osaka bombs inside out forehand to the corner. Kerber flips hand at it, like there have been too many of them to even clap the racquet in appreciation. Story of the match, Naomi was 100% Fire!
She's a phenomenon. Respect nao
She's just too overwhelming pure talent
Osaka was on FIRE>>>>>
Great young Osaka!
Loved this!
Naomi played so well here
Again,Little Princess Osaka.Congratulations.
Naomi ,tan joven y talentosa, desde esos momentos comenzaste a ser una numero 1,grandiosa,saludos desde argentina
Osaka vs. Serena 2018 Final PLEASE!
lol
And she's won US Open 2020!!!
And 2018...
É MUITO bela. É tem um carisma.
These commentators are making too much noise. This match and year was the beginning of Osaka's top confidence. I was so happy for her.
and now she has more majors than kerber!
Osaka is hands down better than Kerber , but Wimbledon is the highest you can achieve in tennis.
Lol Kerber has won clay and grass titles I’ll wait until Osaka achieves that ...
@@Nycku007 i dont think that that is true all majors are equal
@@notis6107 I agree. Otherwise, winning Wimbledon should get you more points than other slams. Which we all know is not the case
Pusher Kerber simply got owned.
Whooooooo, that Kerber attitude is HORRIBLE when she is losing. Waving off shots, frowned all up, looking less and less interested. If she had her head in the game as much as she did in 2016, she'd be on fire. She looked like a whole different person in 2018, especially Wimbledon. She should look at that as inspiration and confidence boosting.
dont say that. her dog was raped several times that year.
Kerber went through a period when she felt like quitting Tennis, i think her early career attitude reduced her GS winning capabilities when we eventually look back at her career
She is such a sour loser. Hate her attitude.
She was done before the game even started
@@dariak1221 Yeah man, Almost in the same league as Serena when it comes to poor sportsmanship.
Queen Osaka is 🔥👑
she really sky rocked up to the top quick but hopefully she gets herself together again, she kinda hit a brick wall for a while now.
she just won US open. so, she's just fine.
She just won her 4th slam.
今(2020年9月)だからわかる。
2017年にしてケルバー相手にこの勝ち方は凄かったね!
So nice to watch a match without the grunting, screaming and howling like a caged hyena.
did you play any sport ?
I dislike silent matches like robot
She's so cute in that outfit 😍
Seriously. Very cute.
What happened to Osaka’s form mid way through 2019? She’s so good for the tour I hope she picks up once things get going again.
Yes so she’s really hit her stride again.
She started to hate the sport the sport, and the pressure of number 1 got to her. Sadly.
She won the AO again
That outside noise is very distracting. Is it raining that day?
Pretty girls also,if she doesn't succeed in sport, she could try modelling👛
I love looking into the crowd and seeing folks with their arms folding instead of cheering when Osaka makes a point....oh well.
Love Naomi's outfit... Pharrell did a great job designing the Adidas outfits for that year.
Even though this isn't really much of an exciting match, it shows where Naomi was at a year before winning the title a year later.
A player very much in development who was already dangerous to play against.
In many ways, in 2017 Angie was having the year that Naomi had in 2019 - both were a bit lost in the wilderness, feeling the pressure of having such a great previous year.
And.2018 she won the 1st USOpen and 2020 The 2nd USOpen ..2021 AO ..
Yes
I love Naomi Osaka ❤❤❤❤ I really do 😊

Kerber! Princesa alemã.
She is so gud she may just win the US open 😉
And she did. Congratulations for calling it!
You could tell kerber would lose from the first game. She looked mad and didn't care her shots were only going halfway up the net and hitting it.
Interesting match, You're a champ, even if some selfish, mind controlling people fail to admit. The world🌎 is lacking in love❤️, making it a sick world🌎. Well, more wins🏆.
oh man...osaka would clobber kerber now 6-0, 6-0
Long life to the tennis

SPOILER - - Defending champion Angelique Kerber was knocked out in round one of US Open 2017 by Japanese teenager Naomi Osaka.

OSAKA LA GUERRERA DE JAPON ¡¡ CAMPEONA!!
How come they look like they work at Hotdog on a Stick kiosk?
hahahaha
2017 was such a tough time for Angie. The german press was all over her. She did have no rest between 16 and 17.
And? What's your point though?
lol wtf. this just means kerber won 2017 title just because of pure luck.
You mean 2016.
You did win a slam on luck, you must be talented and lucky.
Could we have Serena vs Roberta soon. Great match that was.
naomi osaka is 19??!?!? i feel like a complete failure in comparison to her
Kerber looks least interested
The problem with Kerber is that her fundamentals are breaking down. That why you need to get back to basics and make sure your foot work and swing is sound. Kerber need to work on her game. That why golfers have swing coaches. When you get to the top what happens your footwork and swing starts to break down.

Go go king Kong go
I'm here for kerber's legs
Naomi should stay a citizen of Japan. She can be a moral supporter of BLM in order to please her father. Among the ten or so past Grand Slam tournament younger champions, three newer women stand out and appear to be near unstoppable: Iga Swiatek,Sofia Kenin and Naomi Osaka. Simone Halep may have won Grand Slams before, but with her irritably gentle style of play, these three powerful and accurate players will likely stop Simone in her tracks in an earlier round of Grand Slams... ** So ,in my opinion, the Big Three of tennis have burst into the limelight of Grand Slams. Within months and years of having a new boyfriend,a few women like Simone (or Naomi) end up having enlarged and heavy chests. This impedes her tennis playing abilities. Simone's 40 year old boyfriend should pay for her recent breast reduction surgery. Despite Simone's wins, her style of play is too gentle and too boring. She could be part of the BIG FOUR of Women's tennis, along with the three other women mentioned above.. Angel Kerber and Muguruza and Caroline Wozniaski and Victoria Azarenka or someone else could be part of the Fig Four , depending on which four women win more Grand Slams more often, and stand out as being near unstoppable in womens tennis tournaments. When ladies tennis players suffer in playing abilities because of chest enlargement, the boyfriend should be fined, such as 42 year old boyfriend of Halep, a much married man.
Wow when is your book signing coming?
I have never understood how Kerber won anything. She has no strengths to her game. Very average.
No point in watch this I've just read the result thanks.
Yes they should not reveal the results..
The outfits were such eyesores
I still do not understand why are you posting match which is not even interesting
I guess cause it was kinda like Osaka's breakthrough win
@@wonderlandian8465 yes, that is Osaka's breakthrough. But I have to agree with the original comment, Kerber got smoked in the second set - it wasn't that competitive. There are still high quality matches from last US Open they haven't uploaded, disappointing that they chose to put this one instead considering they don't post everyday
@@deusexmachina9776 I *think* they want to highlight Naomi without having to post the final against Serena.
@@daria.morgendorffer they could have posted the match against Sabalenka, I hear it was very good and it was the year she won the title
@@deusexmachina9776 Yep, it was a great match.
They also talk so much about how Naomi lost it against Madison in 2016 - it would be great if they uploaded that match and then the match they played in 2018 where Naomi fought off 13 break points.
These outfits were so ugly
Maaf ya allah hamba liat ini.
