Making leather earrings with the Cricut Maker. So cute and inexpensive!

  • In this video, I show you how to cut basic leather earrings with the Cricut Maker. I also compare leather earrings that have been cut with the smooth side up and the smooth side down. You can even emboss your earrings and I show you how. These earrings are so inexpensive to make! In a future video, I will cut more intricate designs and will find ways to embellish the earrings to add interest. Also, in the video, I use a Cricut Strong Grip cutting mat with Strong Grip transfer tape for the first cut. My next cut was done without the transfer tape. However, as I have continued to cut more earrings, I have found that the leather can slip around as the mat becomes less sticky. So, I will be using the transfer tape each time I cut leather.

    Great video! You inspired me to try this today and it is amazing! I had no idea I could cut leather so easily. I have a question though - what is the other method for removing all those little fraying bits on the edges of the leather after it is cut? I did some with shapes cut out of the inside and am not sure how to get rid of them. You had a warning in the video that the burn off method was not official or recommended or some such thing. What is the alternative to burning? I have tried to google an answer but can't find a thing about getting rid of all those bits. You are the only one to mention them which I appreciate. Thanks!!

    • @MakingwithMarilyn
      @MakingwithMarilyn  4 года назад

      Thank you soooo much! I did this video shortly after I started doing videos, so I was still learning a lot. I still am:) Two other methods that I have used is to cut the frays off very carefully (but that would be really difficult on inside cut) or use a burnishing agent such as gum tragacanth, tokonole or toko pro. I just started doing this within the last couple of months and I have only used toko pro. I really like it. The consistency of it is similar to regular school glue:) You rub it along the edges of the leather where the frays are and it basically sticks them down to the side of the leather. I HATE frays. Thanks again!!!

After I wasted money and supplies, I said maybe I should do a little research. I just didn’t want someone’s perspective or designs to cloud my inspiration. I would not want anyone to say that I stole their idea. I am sure I have so much to learn, but I currently work at a hospital and before that I designed a parts catalog for a marine warehouse. I use both Cricut Transfer Tape and Contact Paper, depending on what I am cutting. What I have found is that when I am cutting something that cuts fairly easily (isn't too thick or dense), Contact paper works fine. When working with a tougher leather, I tend to use Cricut Strong Grip transfer tape. I use the basic Contact Brand Contact Paper that you can get at Walmart. It is very economical to use - much more so than Cricut Transfer Tape. I like to buy clear so that I can use it under cuts, as well as as true transfer tape (such as when transferring vinyl designs).
