  • Aquila’s 36 Sport Power Catamaran offers the space and accommodations that only a cat can deliver on. Her wide 14’7” (4.45 m) beam allows for adding many features that don’t cramp on available space. With the ability to add a Hydro Glide Foil System™, as on our test boat, Aquila says that efficiency is improved by up to 30%.

    • @battlehymn6389
      @battlehymn6389 3 года назад +3

      you could probably get electric ... this boat is designed for outboards though and the largest electric outboards I am aware of equate to about 50HP. Putting two 50HP motors in place of two 300's comes with an obvious decrease in performance, and while the motors themselves are inexpensive the battery bank you will need is not. You'd also be wise to add a generator for cloudy days. The initial coast of going electric will be much higher, how long it takes to recoop that cost really depends on how much boating you do. One thing that many of the companies selling electrics try to say is "no maintenance" this is patently false, do not believe it.

    Why can't you go the hydrofoil with the more powerful engines?

    • @BoatTEST
      @BoatTEST  3 года назад +13

      with larger engines the foil will create too much lift and induce porpoising. The foil is designed up to a maximum speed and the 300’s puts the boat and foil within acceptable tolerances of maximizing lift and efficiency. Going up in engine size to 400’s will push the limit to the edge and actually wants to make the boat start lifting up too high so the foil will lift and then pop out of the water and back in the water and repeat.

      At the speeds the foils lift more of the hull out of the water, the fuel efficiency goes up because the foils in the water have less resistance than the part of the hull lifted out of the water. You also get higher speeds at the same throttle setting for the same reasons. At lower speeds, more of the hull in the water plus the foils is more resistance than the hulls alone, so at lower speeds you get a loss of performance. It's a tradeoff, but worth it up to a point.

    Liked the video. But why do you compare the speed with the consumption of fuel in Gal/Hr? If you drive with faster speeds you obviously get more miles per hour. Which means you shouldn't compare the Gal/Hr but the miles per gallon or am I wrong? In your comparison it looks like the fuel consumption is better without the foils, when in realty you get 1.257 miles per galllon with the foils and only 0.987 miles per gallon without the foils while also going with more speed.

    • @Cybawalla
      @Cybawalla 3 года назад +1

      You make a valid point, in my opinion. It seems that the two key comparison factors at a given rpm (between foiled and non-foiled hulls) are speed and fuel consumption. Gal/hr would be valid for displacement hulls, but for planing hulls, it would seem that fuel burned per unit of distance covered, would be more relevant for comparison. For instance knots for speed and gallons per nautical mile for fuel efficiency. If I re-crunched the numbers based on that, then at WOT (5700 rpm) foils are 16.66% faster (38.3 knots vs 32.8) and fuel efficiency on foils is 11.25% better (1.25 gal/nm vs 1.41). Based on 4500 rpm, foils are 38.4% faster (27.5 knots vs 19.9) and fuel burn with foils is 22.02% more efficient (0.92 gal/nm vs 1.18).
      Which means that, foils make sense on the basis of the performance data. But of course, that is only part of the equation. Additional costs have to be factored in, as do issues such as longer term impact hull integrity (given that this is an add-on to the original design by the hull naval architects). And lifestyle/use of the boat owner....e.g coastal cruising and sand-bank partying vs moderate distance passage making at speed.

      Thought the same thing at first, but looking into it they increase draft the boat’s overall draft, risk of damage from running aground, damage from hitting debris, general concerns about their long term structural integrity, lower fuel efficiency at lower speed. They seem to be only great while running high speeds

    I'm a big fan of the foil assist, like the layout just not ever going to buy a "Made in China" boat. My family deserves better quality on the open ocean.

    Horrible looking lump of white plastic. But great use of space and interior design. Needs teak decks at least to soften design.

      I agree. The exterior looks are definitely the downside of this boat.
